I have some recommendations for you Quies!

Gauze (1st album)
Macabre (2nd Album)
Kisou (3rd Album, Newest)

Check out their new mini-albums....Six Ugly and Child Prey!
I have been a dedicated fan of their's for about 2 years now...they are awesome!!

Here are the group members names:
Kyo (the short one of the group)
Shinya (the "girl" of the group)
Toshiya (usually has blue hair)
Die (usually has red hair)
Kaoru (the tall scary gothic one)

and you can't forget who their producer is: Yoshiki!
(I think he's the producer...)

Oh yes..I also run a DEG Yahoo group...if your interested you can join at this URL! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kyoandtoshiyaclub/ Have a lovely evening! Bye!

I'm working on a set of DeG costumes right now - after I finished my Toshiya costume I roped 4 friends into doing the rest of the band with me. Hopefully we can get it together for next Otakon, if we can all manage to be in the same place at the same time. Unfortunately, they're not all from the same time period (I gave my friends veto power).

Wahahahaha... I can't resist posting something, even though I'm not supposed to be on the computer! I've got two Dir cosplays running at once. *falls over* One of the groups (what remains of it, argh) is the Yurameki/Akuro on Oka outfits and the other (which only consists of two people!) is just random. I get to be Toshiya the first time though! Yay! And Kyo the second! Yay!

*cough* Anyway, album-wise right this second MACABRE is probably my favorite. Oh and also, Yoshiki isn't their producer anymore. He was for Gauze, but not for the others.

wow ling. that's a lot of info in one post. thanks!
hopefull i'll get around to doing something about it..if i ever have a life with school starting up.

i think that their outfits would be awsome to do, if not a bit involved.

Dir en Grey are a cool group, but I havent been able to get hold of any of their albums... I hate living in England... The only recent album I've got deriving of J-Rock/Pop is Gackt Camui's singles 2 album, and my fave song aint even on it :( ... As for the outfits, I thought that Malice Mizer style dresses looked so incredible, but also incedibly hard to cut, sew and finish without wrecking the material, particularly if you're going for the PVC/Leathery works. Think I'll stick to velvet and denim!

My friend made me listen to some stuff . . . I like some of it, but not all. Mostly, I just saw the . . . err . . . Schwein no Isu (??) video yesterday, and no offense to the fans, but for some reason it really cracked me up . . . :crylaugh: I don't think I'm ever going to be hard core into the visual kei type bands, I'm not nearly goth enough or something . . . lol.

Awwwww. I know! Poor Dir en grey!I loved all of their new stuff... *is listening to Child Prey right now* Especialy "Umbrella", I could listen to that song forever. But anyway...*runs off to sew costumes* (my toshiya costume is feeling neglected!)

Ayaka - they crack me up too, and yet I just love it. ;) The more over the top, the better.. I just can't take it seriously in any way. (Especially when I'm sitting down to try to figure out how I can make those outfits for my group without industrial sewing equipment.)

Ne! I LOVE DeG!!! I hope they come concert in America...But anyway, I'm very new to cosplaying, even though I did have three costumes...I still feel fairly inexperienced so I'm posting here to see if anyone knows exactly what the back of Toshiya's blue kimono looks like?

If anyone wants to download funny clips, PVs, or mp3s, come to: http://www.echoing.org/error/shattered.html
That's my new DeG tribute page! It's far from done but the downloads will be coming up soon!! Jaaaa!!

Oh! I think I have a picture of that! (or at least I can point you to one...) **; I'm sort of a Toshiya...maniac, so I should have one!... Hm. I've got one of the side of it where part of the back is visible. If you'd like it, drop me a line or IM me (yuki-chan@kuririnmail.com, twosadsexually).

(p.s. your page is so cute!)

Koumori

When I did Toshiya's kimono, I had trouble finding much in the way of reference from different angles - a few side views, but mostly from the front. So I basically just made the back similar to the front - the top half solid black, and the "skirt" and sleeves all the same blue with the black criss-crossing vinyl and chiffon trim. Assuming that I'm thinking of the same kimono you are.

No, I don't have any pictures that don't suck. For some reason this dress keeps coming out black in photos.

whee o.o I'm doing a Kaoru costume... at some point... I don't usually set certain costumes for certain cons ^^;; I already have some of the stuff I need to start though. I'm not THE biggest DeG fan in the world or anything, but I do luff the guys and the music. My face is a tad round to be doing Kaoru, but I dun care :B

Koumori

Please. I look nothing like Toshiya. But when I see photos of them out of makeup, I'm reassured that they don't really look like that either, so it's all good.

Sometimes I try to make myself cosplay as people I look like... with anime/manga it's easier, but I don't even try when it comes to real people. ^-^; The bad part is that I was actually wondering to myself the other night "which member of Dir en grey do I look the most like?" (too much free time + over-active imagination)

kitty-chan
09-07-2002, 03:33 PM
Wow...I'm tall and my body (especially my shoulders) are kind guy-ish, so I usually end up playing either Die or Kaoru. One time I tried Gackt just to see if it would work out, but it didn't. ^.^;; And the costume wasn't mine and the colors didn't compliment me at all, so maybe that was it, ne? Kaoru: I really don't like dying my hair temporarily pink, I really don't, because I despise pink to an extent. Die: Making the base of the head-to-toe leather costume was easy, but finding stufs and stuff to put on the costume was hard! In one place I actually bought ALL of the studs they had there! I don't think the cashier was too happy. ^.^;; But recently, when I did my hair like Totchi's hairstyle, e friend of mine told me that I have his eye and eyebrow shape, and that I can do that boyish kind of "I want you" look like Totchi does to the camera. That gave me a real boost of an idea that maybe I can cosplay as Toshiya! So here I am, begging for advice on the blue kimono. I have the stockings, shoes, and hair down pat, but that DERNED KIMONO is just a b*tch to put together!!! I found a kimono pattern and found some suitable cloth with the right color and texture, but the myster of what the back of Toshiya's kimono looks like still keeps me back. Without knowing what to do with the back, I have no idea how to go about sewing the kimono and not avoiding the back. O.o Alas, time to search for pictures....JA!!!

Mmmmmm Diru ^_^ It was cool, at Otakon I met this Kyo cosplayer.. and she was either really really good at acting like Kyo, or had the exact same personality as him XD I got a snapshot of her: http://www20.brinkster.com/jadedeclipse/otakon2k2/019.jpeg XD

Koumori
09-07-2002, 11:42 PM
I've made the blue kimono. I ended up making the pattern from scratch, since it is NOT styled like a traditional kimono - in addition to the asymmetrical hem and bell sleeves, the armscye sits right on the shoulder and the collar is very different. Toshiya's dress also has darts in the front bodice for a very smooth fit, but I skipped those.

I'll be glad to tell you how I did it, but really there's no reason you shouldn't improvise the back based on how the front and the sides look. I made the entire dress with a solid black bodice, blue 'skirt' and sleeves; the join of black to blue fabric on the body of the dress is hidden by the sash. The skirt and sleeves on mine are trimmed with crisscross bands of organza and pleather, with some of the organza strips on the sleeves left to trail at the ends. The sash is based on a two-piece obi I got from Japan, heavily interfaced pleather (to minimize wrinkles); the bow is a separate piece held in place by the blue silk obi-age and some pins.

kitty-chan
09-14-2002, 08:50 AM
Hai, I understand. But does this kimono have the four (or 5?) traditional layers of a regular kimono? or is it just one layer with the obi?

Koumori
09-14-2002, 09:36 AM
Honestly, chuck any notions of a traditional kimono out of your head (there are usually 3 layers on a modern one - kimono, juban and slip). If you take a good close look at Toshiya's outfit, you'll see that it is not a kimono. It's a wrap-style dress with a kimono-style neckline, but it's cut very differently, lies close to the body and is designed to be smooth-fitting in a way that kimono absolutely are not. It's sort of a *riff* on a kimono, but it isn't one. If anything I just think of it as a dress.

With that in mind, it's one layer, plus the sash.

I did a Dir en grey cosplay for A-kon 13. Against my better judgement (maybe people say I'd make a FAR better Die then Kyo), I made Macabre Kyo, non-jacket (Still trying to get off my lazy bum and make the jacket x_x)

Nice site! You make a cute Kyo. I wasn't at Otakon this year, or I definitely would have noticed you. I was going to do the Macabre Kyo myself, but our Kyo's dropped out. I figure if anybody asks, we'll just have to tell people we fired him.

I don't have AIM because I don't trust AOL. I know ICQ is also AOL but somehow I feel better with that. I don't leave it on much, but when I do I seem to get left pretty much alone. Lucky me. :)

Well... as with any costume project, let's start with your sewing skills, experience and the resources of time, equipment and money that are available to you. Do you know how to sew? Do you have a sewing machine? Die's costumes tend to involve a lot of vinyl/pleather, which needs to be approached cautiously as it tends to stick and pull in sewing machines unless you have a Teflon foot or like the waxed paper method. Do you want to deal with specialized materials like that? How many rivets, buckles and grommets do you feel like dealing with?

I can think of one or two of Die's outfits that are less technically involved than others. It all depends on how much you want to take on. And... um, are there any that you particularly LIKE?

I'm with Koumori on the whole sewing skills/vinyl/various studs and grommets thing, but any Die is good Die. He he. I want to cosplay Die sometime, just so I can dye my hair red again!

Tell me about it. I really have an itch to cosplay Macabre Die (you know, vinyl bodysuit, lots of stuff on it, face mask), and I will someday, but it's gonna be a killer! Then again, I've settled for Macabre Toshiya (equally vinyl-y and complicated) for the time being... **; It's going to take tons of work, and probably be my only cosplay for 2003.

I think your best bet is to go with your favorite member from a band you really like.. chose a look that you like within your crafting range.

I really hate it when I see people cosplaying jrock just because they're pretty/elaborate costumes... it shows such disrespect to the artists.. -_-

As for cosplaying Die... if you have limited sewing skills/resources... don't do it. Die's costumes are really elaborate and tricky.

......Even the simple ones.. X_x; -working on kisou- You really need to pay close attention to the detail.

Well... as with any costume project, let's start with your sewing skills, experience and the resources of time, equipment and money that are available to you.

Regarding sewing, I don't know how to sew costumes which I'll need help with. About the actual costume, I'm thinking about the most recent look which is the six Ugly / Child prey blue suit. And yes, that is me in the icon. I used this icon in my Live Journal @ http://www.livejournal/~cypherpunk.

I hope I can get this all together by AX2003. hehe :D

At least if you do the suit you can just get a pattern, ne. And it won't require any sewing of vinyl, which though I do it regularly, is always a joy. As for your icon, I recognized that from the SixUgly BBS, which I used to post at once in a while (as 2sadsexually) before I lost the link (which I now have again). He he ha.

AX2003, I will attack/glomp you if you go. Dressed at Toshiya, of course. ^_^

If it's just the makeup that's troubling you, then you're fine with that.

Suits can be pretty difficult to sew, what with linings and shoulder pads and making sure the jacket hangs right. I'd almost suggest looking around to see if you can find one ready-made that you can work with.

Yes he looked better with long hair! ^^

Eh... cosplay. I'd love to do a Dir en Grey cosplay but I have so much other stuff planned I don't know if I'll get time :X So if I do cosplay I think I'll go as Shinya from "Jessica" or some other simple costume of his. ^^

I'm working on 3 of them. I'd love to know how yours turn out. At the moment I'm just making myself nuts trying to find pleated chiffon for under $20 a yard.

can you pleat the chiffon urself? u can get regular chiffon for less than 10USD a yard (dont know about CAN.) though i guess it takes away about 1/2 of teh amount of material you start out w/ :/

i love the song "UGLY" recently' i've found myself listening to that a lot >_<

Unfortunately, no. It's the nature of chiffon to just not want to hold pleats, and if you starch it or something then it loses all the properties that make it chiffon - it doesn't flow anymore. So it has to be done at the factory with heat and chemicals, hence the ridiculous price. I have a friend in Dallas who thinks she might have found some for me, and she's going to check it out this weekend. *fingers crossed*

My friend found me some pleated chiffon, all right.

Unfortunately, it's mauve. (Before you ask, no, you can't dye polyester at home.) Back to square one.

You think? Frankly if I'm going to spend $25/yard on fabric, I don't want to risk damaging the pleats in any way.. and I'd suspect hair dye might have some awful chemical reaction that would send the whole thing to hell. I'm a wimp that way.
