EDIT: Date decided!!

When: May 12th
Where: Rose Tree Park (Media,PA)

Hope to see you there!!

I had such a blast last year. XDD If it's at a time that I can get away from town, I'll try to make it again.

That'd be awesome if I could swing it. I got grounded from cons, so... this sounds like something I could get by with. It mostly depends on the day of the week and if I can get a group to go with me.

Early May would be ideal, seeing how the end of the month is chock full of holidays and summer crowds. Meebe the 5th of May? 'Tis a Saturday. That or the 12th.

Sorahana

Can't do the 5th, running an outdoor festival thingie at school (ShikkariMatsuri). 12th might work.

TheAnarCHris

Fair enough. Shall we say the 12th for now, and watch how many people argue over the date between now and then?

ShibbyOmittchi

To answer your question Gene, yes. I live about 10 minutes from Rosetree park and ive been to Otakon a few times and to AnimeUSA.

Its about 1-2 hour drive depending on traffic. Its also VERY easy to get there if you are taking highways.

Basicly from Baltimore, 95 north till you get to 476 north, 476 to the route 1 exit west (ie away from philadelphia), also, this is the Springfield route 1 exit as there are two exits for route 1 , this is the 2nd one (one for media, one for springfield), you go literally 2-3 miles down the road at most, take the 252 exit north. It will then the be the big park on the right hand side.

Make sense ?

03-23-2007, 01:23 PM
To answer you question about Hotels padgett87, no big ones, its basicly in the burbs. I spent 3 min or so on google and found two hotels in close proximity.

McIntosh Inn of Media:This one looks to be one exit further down route 1 (bout 2 miles away)http://www.travelpost.com/hotels/McIntosh_Inn_of_Media/h55658

Motel Providence: this one is down 252

I'd love to go, but that's the weekend after a trip to Albany and right now I think the distance is just a little too far. Unless we can manage to hitch a ride with someone or my fiance decides he really wants to put the mileage on his car, sadly we'll have to just try for next year.

Just heard about this courtesy of Starwind824...

May 12 *IS* the Staff Wrap Meeting/Executive Staff Elections for Anime Boston, however, another 500-mile round trip to Boston (in less than a month) is probably NOT happening for me. If I can get another one of my staffers to step in for me at the meeting, I might try to check this picnic thing out.

I take it that cosplay is not required, correct? This is good, since cosplaying outside of a convention/photoshoot type situation kind of weirds me out.

It would be cool to see the people who I really didn't get a chance to hang out with at Anime Boston... despite the fact that I can pretty much guarentee that will be the oldest person in attendence. I guess I can act like a 'den mother' for all of you guys-- being the old, decrepit hag that I am. LOL...

Dearest Riza...ah #$% normal talk for this post.

No cosplay is not required. I'm probably gonna show up in costume with Carrie, but it's artbook BLEACH stuff so it's not super nerdy. But my boy John isn't cosplaying, and if Gears comes down (IF) he probably wont be in costume for too long. But yeah, no cosplay is no problem. Although once again, I remind you of that PS we need to do one of these days.

And no, you're not gonna be the oldest one there :P...Probably.

As for ride news, Kaine, you may want to contact the NJACCers about getting a ride, since you and Ebay are both NJers and Riko/Amanda/Gears all showed interest in coming down. I'm riding down from NY w/ John, Cyn and Flippy and picking Carrie up on the way down.

Also, is anyone bringing a grill down? I'm down for buying meats and bbqing...

Silly Hawkeye, in theory you could just drive down with your jacket off.

There is a block or 2 walk to the gasroom bathroom, though. I just prefer jumping in the back on someone's car and changing though.

Note to self-This year, wear something under your pants.

Not to mention when I drove to my photoshoot wit Dave, I had my hair already done, and it kept hitting against the roof of my car. It was a complete pain in the ass. :D

Hawkeye would probably win for the easiest thing to drive in though.
EVERY OTHER costume I currently have completed (and NOT in some state of re-vamping...) has wings. I sh!t you not.

This is pretty damn stupid, but even though its the media, it has NO right to kick us out of the park, and if they, isnt the Ridley Park or something near it?

If they are shredding that, that means its on the asphalt. I work in property management services, i know this stuff. If its done on the grass, its near impossible to clean up paper shreds in grass, unless they do a complete re-landscape of the area. Which would mean lots of money for a large area. If they leave it in the grass, they would be busted for litering, and offense like that against a news agency would be really nasty. They would be conducting the event on the asphalt because of this.

azriell
05-10-2007, 07:17 PM

I just have to ask, next time you want people to pay for Hotdogs and what not, please tell us before hand so we can brign money? I didn't have any money on me..

We weren't anticipating MS having to go buy meat because someone else had said they were bringing it, and we assumed they meant enough for at least 20 people since that was the guesstimate on attendance before we actually got there.

I was really surprised at the amount of baked goods/sugary stuff there was. It's all fine and good, but I can't eat that kind of stuff like I could when I was a teenager. Neither stomach nor skin can take it x_X; Some people were able to make donations back for the cost of the "real" food, so it's all good. No worries. Thanks to those who had money on them and did donate.

We also apparently have to have a permit next time. >_> I dunno if I entirely buy that story but since nobody got in trouble this time around, safer than sorry, and the permit is free.

So, if we can't have it at Rose Tree Park next year, can we move it to Pennypack Park in the Northeast Philadelphia region? I propose the area around Rhawn Avenue.

Rinkun
05-14-2007, 02:20 AM
We suggested that one before and the only problem is that it isn't off a major roadway, minus Roosevelt Blvd. A majority of the people that go to the picnic, are from outside the Philadelphia area, so they may have a little bit more of a problem navigating. Rose Tree Park is right off 476, which feeds right onto I-95 and I-76. The Rhawn St. entrance is even more difficult since it's off on a small street.

As much as I would love to go up the street, you also need to consider where everyone else is coming from.

We can keep it in mind. We have had it other places (Fairmount, etc), but from a general consensus, the current location is ideal.

Also...we have a year. We don't need to worry about location until...next year. XD

I would NEVER do the picnic in Pennypack part, some parts of it aren't so great and Lindsey summed up location issues. We'd probably do it at Rosetree again or go back across the street to Ridley Creek Park (they had real bathrooms lol).

We also apparently have to have a permit next time. >_> I dunno if I entirely buy that story but since nobody got in trouble this time around, safer than sorry, and the permit is free.

Um. Yeah. I was going to add as well that Northeast Philly is NOT an area that I would prefer to be hanging out in. I'll take the train thru it, but other than that, I'd prefer to have the picnic in an area where there is less chance of me actually getting SHOT.

Re: PERMIT.

Near the end of the picnic, some park security guy came up to the pavillion and asked what was going on, and then proceded to tell us that if we are having a gathering of 10 or more people, we apparently need a permit. I think he was just BS-ing us, but whatever. If it's free, I say we contact them about it if we choose to do this in the future.

Re Several things
Regarding the food/money situation- AP pretty much hit the nail on the head with that. We were definetly 20+ at 3/4ish, and we weren't expecting to collect $$$ from ppl. But when someone SINGLE handledly drops 45-50 bucks on a picnic, and doesnt even get a friggin thank you from anyone, someone needs to be said/done. While we did have a barter system set up (food for booze, booze for food, cooking services for both) I think we're ALL at fault for not preparing better.

Oh and apparently drinking's a no-no. OOPS!.

Said permit- There's still some vagueness with that. I think the permit only applies if we wanted to chill in the gazeboo for "X" amount of time. And said permit is free. That and I'm fairly certain if we all went back next year, not in costume, and just hung out on the grass area, little to nothing would be said to us.

Location-Coming from NY/NJ...OH HELL NO. The location is fine and plenty convient for the masses. And allows for heading back to Oshi for gaming fun.

Overall, excellent time, just some suggestions/comments for the future. (Possible FMA shoot there this fall, YES PLZ!)

BTW, with Fairmount Park, any gathering of more than 50 is to be covered by a permit. And it costs mucho moolah for Belmont Plateau ($400 for private, double that for corporate. That from the Greek Week events ages ago with riots et al.) Anywhere else without a pavillion is $30 all over the system.

We already have the place, all you gotta do is mention the TIME.

(Providing I'm not already too busy with Anime Boston and PAC stuffs by that time...)

Um...what? WE'RE NOT MOVING. And we only had over 50 people once or twice before anyway, so yea.

Like I said before, we'll probably stay at Rose Tree, if not we'll move across the street to Ridley Creek Park (its literally across the street lol).

And thanks for telling me what was up with the permit thingie folks, I'll check into that next time (as in call Rose Tree and ask) >_> lol.

Now I'd like feedback on stuff we wanna have next time.

Re: NEXT YEAR.

As long as we have a plan in place for the major things (ie: MEAT) we should be alright. You can usually count on SOMEONE to bring soda, chips, baked goods, but if there is no regular food then situations like this past year can arise.

And if people decide they cannot go to the picnic, we need to cross them off the list and find someone else to take over for what they were going to bring.

This kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME when we try and plan potlucks at my office...

Things to add
In order to get said permit (according to security guy) You have to request one from the Mansion NEXT/In the park. Yay free.

I was thinking mid-to late September for FMA funiness. On a Saturday naturally. And not on Carrie's b-day. How's that looking for ya LH?

So far, can't tell. No meeting dates have been announced for AB, and I'm not sure what my role in PAC will be. *IF* I get an Exec Board position (which seems like an eerie possibility at this point... O.o) I cannot blow off the PAC meetings... I'll know better as the date gets closer.

As far as the trek was for me I really liked the park and this being my first time going would definitly go again. This has just given me a little more pressure to start something like this down by me, haha and then you'll all have to drive.

RE: moving the picnic

Nobody said we needed to move it, and I agree, especially not to Philly. I really liked this park actually, and it is a fair location as far as the distances people need to travel. It was easy to get to and plenty big. Rose Tree should continue to be fine, and Ridley is a reasonable alternative.

A side note:

Ridley has restrooms and charcoal grills on site, but reservations can be made for a fee. "Free" areas to use are on a first-come first-serve basis. :\ Alcohol is prohibited "except at specially designated facilities operated or leased by the Department." I dunno what they mean by that but I suspect it's really saying 'no alcohol in the park' >_>; I think the whole security thing is going to vary considerably since Ridley is a state park and Rose Tree is a county park (ultimately run by the state, but still, probably not as closely policed).

Re: Rose Tree permit

Making that call or visiting that house would be best to find out. I wasn't able to turn up anything on needing a permit for a freakin' picnic, but investigation DID confirm Starwind's OOPS-- no alcohol in Rose Tree. Ohhh well. That gazebo is apparently a hot spot in the park, especially for wedding photos and things, so maybe that guy was trying to allude to that. He did make a point of saying without a permit, anyone could have walked into the picnic and sat down there, but the permit would 'reserve' that space for us. Not sure how badly anyone cares about that.

Re: mid-late sept on FMA shoot, not on Carrie's b-day

Should be fine for me, and since we have the same birthday, I agree. :bigtu:

Ehh regarding my absence: We ended up leaving school at 2:30 because they took so damn long to check me out, so we didn't get back to Philly until about 7:30 x_x

I don't cosplay FMA either but it would be during school for me so it all works out. XD;;

So it looks like we had a pretty good turnout?

Oh, I didn't mean for that to come out rude..x.x I am sorry if it came out that way. Maybe next time just tell people to bring $5 just incase that does happen again?

Didn't think it was rude, was just explaining why it went down the way it did.

As a rule of thumb, it never hurts to have some spare change on you whenever you go anywhere. :) You never know what will happen (or who doesn't accept credit/debit cards, and WTF on those people).
