I'm with Viz - Rumiko Takahashi gets published by Viz u_u

Haha.. um.. Jump Comics.. Flower Comics, Kodansha, Asuka Comics.. ^_^; I don't really buy American stuff. Though I used to buy Mixx a good while back (1998/1999). So I guess TokyoPop? I like Viz, too, since they've brought Shounen Jump here.

Last year I would have said Viz for the same reason Babbit_Chan did - the put out Rumiko Takahashi's stuff. However, despite the quality of their translations (I happen to think they do a pretty good job), it takes them FOREVER to put out the next volume of anything. And I'm just too impatient to wait a year for something. I mean, *how* long have they been printing Ranma? It's been at least a decade, so they're probably averaging 2 vols a year. Not good when compared to Tokyopop, who put out decent translations of lots of really good mangas every month. Okay, so maybe some come out every two months or so, but they come out with so much *other* stuff in the meantime that I have enough to keep me occupied. And it costs less.

So I vote for Tokyopop.

Kana. It's French (well, Belgian as a fact but French and Belgian comic markets are kinda merged).
They've got great titles (currently HunterxHunter and Monster are among my favorites), the paper and printing are good, they respect the japanese format, the translations are good AND they're cheap (HxH is about 5 euros per volume, Monster around 7 because it's a little bigger ; yes they correspond to the Japanese volumes, so around 180 pages ; 1 euro is roughly 1 USD).
Well I don't know much about American editors, but I've got a few Viz graphic novels at home (mainly Takahashi, my boyfriend is a Maison Ikkoku fan and not many works of the lady got translated in French) and I find them VERY expensive. And not very respectful to the original.
Second for me comes Generation Comics, the manga branch of the Italian editor Panini (still French translations though). A little more expensive (roughly from 7 to 10 euros per volume), but some of their titles are great (Eden, Banana Fish).

Tokyo Pop, they have variety and usually don't take forever bringing their manga out.

*smiles merrily* Michi, I'm the same as you. I only read manga in Japanese. ^_^ So my favourite publishers would be Hakusensha (Hana to Yume Comics), Shogakukan (Flower Comics), and Kadokawa (Asuka Comics). I also like Shueisha/Homesha (Eyes Comics), but too bad Eyes magazine died over a year ago. (I miss Alichino).
But, back in the days when I couldn't read Japanese (3 yrs ago or so), I would get Tokyo Pop. ^_^

Why does this sound like a TokyoPop survey I took a while ago? o.O;

I have to say TokyoPop too since they've really stepped up to the plate with the variety of selection and all. And yes.. cheaper is good. Paying double digits for manga=bad.

Viz all the way. Their release schedule sucks, and is always late...

...but Takahashi is a winner.

hm....Shueisha, Shogaku for japanese ones, and Daran for Chinese....English version---I don't care at all about......they're okay...except for tokyopop. i HATE tokyopop because of what they did to Wish. (and i think they hate me too.) They choose some of the best manga...but they do a horrible horrible job of their editing/translating/producing---just look at the paper quality of Angelic Layer!! It's Newsprint! Newsprint is definately not worth ten dollars.

I am so getting flamed for this....>> i rant too much about them runing Wish.

Yeah... I started getting Ranma when I was like 12... um.. helloo??? why am I only on book 21? I don't understand why viz even deals with publishing individual issues of Ranma 1/2

i'm with Dark Horse. though, they take a while to get their novels out, they have rights over some of the most beautiful and interesting titles which they do an amazing job with so it's worth the price they charge.

My favs are the same ones as Michi XD Even though I can't really read enough Japanese I still prefer buying stuff like Asuka, Sho-Comi, Hana to Yume, and Weekly Jump. It would have been more fun if the Japanese companies were included...Although techinically speaking I think I saw somewhere that Viz is like now partners with Shueisha and Shogakukan o.o;;

Anyway I like Tokyopop. Even though I've been reading Viz stuff longer then Tokyopop I've been more of a loyal TP fan becuase I bought Smile and Mixxzine and Tokyopop magazine...

I'm another one of those who generally read comics in Japanese (HanaYume, Asuka, Wings, and a tad of Shounen Sunday... XD) But as far as American companies go, I only buy anything from Tokyo Pop XD They make a lot of good choices in what series to translate. Sometimes their translations are a little whacky... But I think they make a lot more sense then Viz's at least ~_~
I admit I haven't read much Viz lately though, so their policies might have changed, but it was always strange to me how they would translate comics with rampant nudity, but always keep the "bad language" to an minimum ^_^ I really felt like Ranma's character was a lot different once I saw it subtitled. When I saw their translations, it sometimes seemed like Akane was overreacting ^_^ And they would always opt for the "change joke" route, instead of the "explain joke" route, if you know what I mean. Plus, they would charge $15-17 for a book that would eventually just fall apart >_<
Course they've shaped up on the pricing (thanks to competition from Tokyo Pop >:D) so they might have fixed up translations some too. And even though I say all these bad things about them, I wouldn't have started reading manga in the first place if it wasn't for them, so I'm very thankful, I know they're doing what they think is right... ^_^;;
I like Tokyo Pop in that they print the book in a small size (generally still a lil big though T_T), have good book quality, and keep the book layouts similar to the Japanese ones, but still with a low price. I got pretty pissed at them about Initial D (mainly because they edited out stuff and changed names while still writing "100% manga" on it XO), and they also did edit the first volume of Chobits in one part (am I the only one to have noticed? Or maybe I am remembering the Japanese version wrong? ^_^;;)

In any case, I've rambled waaaay too much for someone who only reads 2 comics in English ^_^;;;; (4 when Ghost! and Tokyo Babylon come out XD XD)

Oh yeah, soon you'll have to add Del Rey to the list, I've heard they picked up XXXHOLiC and Tsubasa Resoviour Chronicle! I don't know what to think...... ~o~

Tokyopop has the most titles I've ever seen with a manga company, but they don't have any really well known ones. What Viz lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. I mean, Viz has all the big-hitters like Naruto, Evangelion, Inu Yasha, Ranma, Shaman King, Rurouni Kenshin, and Tenchi Muyo! Go Viz!

For Japanese releases, I have to go with Flower Comics. Yes, I'm a hopeless romantic. The weirder the situation is, the better.

For domestic releases, I have to go with Tokyo Pop.

Hm, all of my English comics are published/translated by TokyoPop/Mixx Entertainment, except for X/1999 (which, by the way, has one of the most horrible translations of any manga; but it's still not as bad as watching the tv series... I was just watching it subtitled, and noticed that they translated some things REALLY weird... and if I notice, then there's gotta be a problem, since my japanese is worse then my latin.) But I like Tokyopop for its titles, not for the particular quality of translating or anything. Tokyopop is really hip about publishing things that its readers want. Good thing, that.
I do like Kodansha and Asuka though, but I don't own much import manga, since its harder to find, obviously. Mrawr.

And yeah, someone mentioned Del rey earlier... I don't know whether to be happy or scared... well, there's nothing really in Tsubasa of xxxHolic that they would even need to consider editing, so... rawr. They probably just offered more money for the titles then tokyopop did...

Its true that Viz pretty much has the monopoly on shounen manga, since they get all of Jump and Sunday. But I think Tokyo Pop has the upper hand on the shoujo manga side, with more of clamp's works plus Peach Girl, Paradise Kiss, plus their shounen ai titles give them an upper hand in that category.

Viz is doing great with the shounen jump stuff. Its cheap as anything, and of course since they can pick the best titles from all the years the magazine's been running, the usa version almost reads as the best of shounen action manga. I'd still rather have the Japanese ones though, price-wise ^-^;

Beware_UY7:
I don't really think they'll have to edit either comic. Though name changing is a possibility, especially if they wanna eliminate links to other companies' comics.... >_< But I think that's the worst case scnerio.

This is so true. I almost never see any real shoujo from VIZ like...ever. They're trying to catch up in that category right now, but I think TP will always rule in that area.

They're doing an okay job. It could be better. Some of the translatoins are so-so, and Naruto is probably the worst translated out of the bunch. Sad really, since it's so popular you think they try to do it right. But they did fix somethings in the first GN of Naruto, like translations errors and they changed some move names too.

Del Rey? Didn't they do Ironfist Chinmi? God, I loved that series. It was my first manga! ^_^ But they stopped publishing it here in the US after vol 2, but I think they still print it in the UK. I thought it was great they kept it in it's orginal format (right to left).

That's sad to hear, but I guess I should have expected it ^_^ I guess I should have actually read their shounen jump comics before I judged them on it! T-T

Oh did they???? XD I don't remember who put that out, and I don't have it with me, but I remember it was an unusual publisher. I loved that!! It reminded me of an old Jackie Chan movie in comic form X3 I was sad they didn't put out anymore either. Actually, were they the first to not reverse manga?
Did you know a Chinmi anime was made?? It was very short running (most likely because it was unpopular) and I don't think it was ever released on VHS or LD. I would love to see it though T-T

Yes it is really sad. Especially when the people who scanlated these titles before VIZ got them did such a better job, and they weren't even paid to do it. Especaily with Naruto. If anyone ever read the scanlations at Toriyama World, you know what I'm talking about. Mostly its just errors when it comes to translating technical stuff like move names and ninja terms. Also, in my opinion anyhow, I felt they didn't translate Naruto's motivation as well as they should have. I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone, but that the best way I can put it in words.

I just checked my bookshelf. It's by a company called Dell. Whether they are related to Del Ray I can't say. Yeah, I saw a VCD at this Chinese bookstore awhile back for the Chinmi tv series or something.

Yeah, Viz has some good shoujo like Ceres and Utena....but Viz EXTREMELY annoys me! Ugh...it takes them forever to publish a goddamn manga.. I mean, well look at Utena...I've been waiting FOREVER for them to finish the volumes..and they're only on volume 3. It seems as though they TOTALLY neglect it and forget that *SOME* people do have an interest in their Utena manga! Same with a couple other mangas. >.> If they don't speed up soon, I'm going to put them through the same misery that they've put me through....SOMEHOW..>0

I like Tokyopop the Best. Viz I can tolerate for some titles but the bulk of what I have/ am going to buy is from TokyoPop. Viz I don't appreciate the whole being really slow thing, higher prices (their getting better though), and their translations. I have a few examples. In InuYasha someone called another person in the room and old woman when in the next panel you can clearly see it is an old MAN. Me and my friend are annoyed at Ranma because they call Ranma's Braid/ponytail a pigtail. That's not that big a deal but it is annoying. And in the 3rd Utena THEY DIDN'T TRANSLATE SOMETHING!! You can see they were in the process because there is a white rectangle partially covering the Japanese characters but there's no english there! And since they flip thier books (which I prefer the right to left format) the characters are backwards and even if I could read them I'd probably have to write them out the proper way so I could understand. And I have a feeling that isn' t the first time I saw that is a Viz book either. I did see something like that in a Tokyopop book, but it was in Card Captor Sakura and it was only one character which was probably a sigh or somthing so that I didn't get annoyed at. But the Utena thing, whatever she said it was a question because there was a backwards question mark there... and it's wasn't the first time I saw a backwards question mark in a manga either.

I like TokyoPop because of their selection, prices, quality, and the speed that the volumes come out with. I also have some ComicsOne manga and might get some Dark horse eventually, maybe even Raijin Comics. But if it isn't TokyoPop it tends to elude me. I have a harder time getting my hands on Viz comics then TokyoPop. The only thing that I like Viz for is Shonen Jump. I wanted the Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga soooo badly.

Sorry for the rant. ^_^;;; But I just dispise Viz...

I live Viz...only because they are translating/publishing a bunch of Shonen Jump comics. but I'm also very pissed at them for doing that, too, because I think they suck in editing and translation :/ (Naruto. *twitch* )
Tokyopop has a ton of good manga that they put out very fast, so I vote for them. some of their editing is annoying though. Not sure about translations.
and...Sheiusha is the publisher of Shonen Jump, yes? so I like them.
and indie comic publishers, whose names I don't know. @_@

I think I've figured out why it takes Viz soooo long to come out with manga. Alot of there stuff is still coming out in magizenes and they can't make the novel befor the magizene now can they? I looked at a discription for Utena for their Animerica Extra (I think...) magizene and it's exactly where the 3rd novel was so they have to wait until enoguh chapters come out in the magizenes before they can make a novel. It's the only thing that makes sense. :/

Whoever said a few pages ago that Tokyopop screwed up Wish, I agree. I read the first volume in Tokyopop format, sighed, and went back to my Japanese editions with the text-only translations. ^^;;

But overall, Tokyopop is my favorite. I like how they've been starting to put in color pages.

Although...ANY COMPANY who acquires the rights to and then publishes Rose of Versailles will earn my undying love, as long as they translate it well. I bought the whole manga series in Japanese and, well, my Japanese is at a basic-self-taught-fangirl level. I can puzzle out the hiragana and katakana, but I only understand about 1 in 5 to 1 in 15 words. XD I'm buying the French version when I go to Paris in the summer. It makes sense to read that manga in French.
