Does anyone know anything about the dance at Otakon? Or maybe if there even *is* a dance? I'm looking for info as to who's doing the music, and if it'll be anything like the ones at Katsu and Animazement.

As far as I know they still have the "rave" but I don't know if that's what you're thinking of. I didn't like it at all last year though. They didn't play any J-pop!

O_O! I rave with no j-pop!? Maybe I should re-think coming...XD

Well, um, most rave music is TECHNO, and a lot of Jpop is NOT techno, so I wouldn't expect hearing any jpop music and going more for ParaPara songs and Europop, -^ ^;; Just a lil note

Yea, I can't wait for the rave, any rave is good for me, just the one at Katsu was kinda scary, everyone was doing DDR type moves... I mean, is that the only type of dance people at anime cons know? I guess I shouldn't expect much, but still, that's just sad..-x x;; 'Scuse me, I just know a buncha people are gonna get offensed by that, but still! DDR is fun with the game, but looks just stupid without it -^ ^;;;; At least try to Para Para or SOMETHING...achem...yes..->>;;

Not fer nothing, but who goes to a con for a dance, unless i like one of those speciality dances(there's a FF one somewhere not near me, thus the lack of caring)?

I can't wait! I live in a very rural area and don't get to go to raves EVER! It'll be soooo much fun! My friends don't want me going to room parties but i can go to the rave! It's ganna be fun wow! And yes i do notice people try to dance ddr style ^.^; At least they're trying i guess. Well as long as you have fun it's ok to dance however you want.

you're contradicting yourself, the best raves are in rural areas. bored middle class white kids with too much time on their hands= awesome raves.

anyway i heard Baltimore has an awesome nightlife, somebody might want to organize a cosplay.com club night(hopefully at a hip-hop club)

Yeah, I mean, they got all those barns to hold 'em in and such, too. :P Although I'm sure part of the problem would be the lack of techno fans in our area, Miaka, along with the fact that we're complete dorks and even if they existed around here we'd never be able to find out about them. ^.~

But yeah, considering it's an anime con, j-pop would be good... No hip-hop. Gag me. Keep it awaaay.

Hm, a question I just thought of. What do people generally wear to these raves? Does anybody ever come in costume?

UsagiNoSenshi
04-23-2003, 11:56 AM
Lil_Phoenix, I've never heard of someone using a barn for a rave. Dances in barns are usually square dances ^.^; although we could use one of my barns! And when i say rural i mean i have cows in the back yard rural! I live on a farm myself!

loose clothes, just like any other occasion you expect to dance a lot and an undershirt, for the love of god(if you're fat) wear an undershirt. nobody wants to be around sweaty fat people

Lil_Phoenix

You get that at conventions anyway. XD

I like, never go to the con dances (and when I do I don't stay very long because I can't dance worth a crap, and most of the music sucks in my opinion, whee) but people wear just about anything. And people have danced while cosplaying, yes. Although I wouldn't recommend it unless you're wearing a light costume because I'm sure it'll get reaaaallly uncomfortable after a while, getting sweaty and all. Yup.

UsagiNoSenshi

I personally wanted to go to the rave this year, but does it really suck that much, like high school dance suck or what...I couldn't go last year because I didn't know where they held it in the first place.

So what is really the low down on the whole thing?
I really could use something to do friday night this year.

<<Well, um, most rave music is TECHNO, and a lot of Jpop is NOT techno, so I wouldn't expect hearing any jpop music and going more for ParaPara songs and Europop, -^ ^;; Just a lil note>>
To the most part, that is true. Jpop is... well, Pop music. However, there are a couple of Asian electronica artists out there (Korean artists are pretty good). I have a couple of songs from Asian artists off my Kazaa selection :)

<<just the one at Katsu was kinda scary, everyone was doing DDR type moves... I mean, is that the only type of dance people at anime cons know?>>
I don't mean to cut you again or anything but have you noticed that there were a couple of DDR songs being played at the Katsucon rave (Ordinary World, Shooting Star, I think they played Never ending Story...?)? For some reason, I have no doubt that it would also show up at Otakon. Most Otakus are the type of people who normally don't know how to dance, aren't the ones who would show up at a typical school dance either so what's the closest most Otakus do to learn how to dance? By playing DDR. Yea right, most of them tune into MTV2 or BET, the Hell with that (I love BET though)! I'm average at raving.. but I got away w/ the DDR moves at Katsucon because I cosplayed as a DDR char at the rave ;)

<<anyway i heard Baltimore has an awesome nightlife, somebody might want to organize a cosplay.com club night(hopefully at a hip-hop club)>>
We sort of did at Katsu. Eurobeat King set up a little table outside the rave room for all the Cosplay.com people to hang out who either could not dance, wanted something else to do (LIMBO!) or just don't want to go back in the rave room where it was stinky and hot as Hell.

<<Lil_Phoenix, I've never heard of someone using a barn for a rave. Dances in barns are usually square dances ^.^;>>
::bursts out laughing:: Rave at a barn... yehaw! I'm so sorry... I'm a suburban slicker. I go out to Virgina, turn on their radio stations and all I mostly get is Country or Rap. That was very least expecting.

<<I personally wanted to go to the rave this year, but does it really suck that much, like high school dance suck or what...>>
I personally found con dances more enjoyable than a school dance. It all depends on your favorite music genre. If you hate Techno, Trance or electronica then you shouldn't go. Hardly anyone knows you, it's a more respectable crowd so they won't point out and laugh at you when you try to dance and I found the music selection much more better. But sorry, there is no slow dancing.

<<So what is really the low down on the whole thing?
I really could use something to do friday night this year.>>
I heard rumors that Otakon will only have their Rave on Saturday night. For friday, check into seeing an anime viewing or even better... MYSTERY ANIME THEATRE 3000 (where they make fun of old anime) AND MUSIC VIDEOS!! MAT3K was good at the beginning, but then toward the end, it was really lame. According to one of my friends, last year's suck compared to the year before. Just an idea to throw in.

Yeah...Baltimore and DC have the best night life scene...but they do have some high cover charges and tend to be dangerous depending where you go... If you all select a night (those who are interested) DC/Balt Metro-area Cosplayers can organize something.

There are a lot of good clubs in Baltimore, but there are a lot better ones in Washington D.C. Fells Point's got decent places, but then again, there are only so many bars, pubs, and clubs that one can go to before it gets old.

Anou...the dance at Otakon has several rooms, which is kinda cool, since I can only take J-Pop for so long. There is club/Baltimore house music in a separate room, and like...two, three dance floors total? Iono.

Are you talking about One? It has like four floors and each is dedicated to a different element. Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth, I think.

Power Plant Live has a couple of bars in it, plus it's not far from the convention center.

um sorry to burst anyones bubble but baltimore clubs close at 2 am normally (unless this has been changed when i was away at college) and some places (ex. the ottabar) want you to get the f*** out as soon as it hits 2. i've never been there-yet- but i hear sonar's pretty nice. lots of accesible drugs *sarcasm*, they get some of the best djs (missed aphrodite-king of the beats!), and i think their shows last longer. you really don't want to take any form of mass transit at night (everything runs slower and its possible to miss the last bus or water taxi). you can indeed walk to fells point from the harbor. it's a long walk, (possibly 30min) but it's do-able i reccomend chattin up the homeless-ok i'm joking but fells has some cute places. as for the clubs- i'd never go to them (not my scene) but there is orpheus (goth club)...

This'll be my first Otakon, and I really can't wait for Friday night's dance/rave (especially since I actually know DJ Maiku). I usually have much more fun at convention dances than at school dances and such. There's just so many people like you with the same interests, etc, that you feel really comfortable just letting it all go ^^; I plan on making (or buying, lol) a separate outfit for the Friday rave, probaly go pick up something somewhat-gothic at Hot Topic and buy a bunch of glowsticks before I come. Eee, I can't wait!! ^o^

I really hope they play some j-pop at least. I'm ok with techno and trance and all that, but I don't like it when they don't play anything related to Japanese (that's why I love DJ maiku, he actually plays remixes of anime and j-pop songs, as well as Eurobeat, such as DDR). Para Para songs would be awesome too: I know a few routines (wheee, it'd be awesome if they played Deluxe <3 <3 <3)

Isis Ishtar
07-12-2004, 10:42 PM
Um, I'd say around 17-25 or so. I know that most of the people I meet there are much older than me (granted I'm only 15, but still o.O; ). But I still have a lot of fun and if you're younger like me, you get a chance to meet older friends (I know I made a lot of college age friends at the last convention dance I went to)

For those who don't know and want to have fun with glowsticks, please be careful. Last year someone was doing something (boiing), and being very irresponsible, resulting in hitting another person in the face. What did that lead to? Ambulances, paramedics, having the dance floor cleared, a generally un-cool period of time.

Please be careful.

I agree, partially: no crappy hip-hop. None of that stupid mainstream stuff, let's get some RJD2 going since he's "instrumental funk-rock hip-hop". If you haven't heard his stuff, I'd suggest tracking it down, it's awesomely awesome, and I'm going to see if I can't get them to play some at Otakon (my CDs, w00t). It's really, really good stuff. :D

But if you want to find me, look for a fellow wearing this:

I usually wear just jeans and a nice top. Something that is cool and I won't be extra hot in.

Don't forget to reapply your deoderant! Most of it isn't really 24 hours. Well none that I've come across.

Actually, that movie sucked pretty bad. So did the breakers. That was more hiphop than breaking in that movie. Want breakers and real competition? Check out some of the guys and gals on the West coast.

And I never said I was a breaker (lord, no, I'd never aspire to be one). I, however, don't feel that a lot of people there can dance. At all. They just seem to be...flailing...their limbs.

Or their glowsticks.

Dances will be dances, I think it is what you do with the time you have rather then mourning over bad music. Generally I'd stick around a dance with some friends. Meh, so the music is bad. At least I take the time to appreciate meeting old and new people as a good time. If music is bad for me I just go down to the video game room and play some Guilty Gear XX.

Well I know there is a lot of the waving and the flashing and the jumping with the glow sticks that causes the brain damage- But! That's ok, because I look for the circle. Where... you free your mind.

Usually I enjoy the man himself who usually starts the dance circles, last year it was on the rug. Which was sad cause I can't slide on a rug but I did work with it though. There are lots of fun style and still break dancing is eye candy to all. Aerial acrobatics I guess, watching someone spin his head on the floor or do a samursault usually leaves people gasping. I try to keep up with it, but still I have fun. And of course you generally have the fanboy trying to kick a little move and I still cheer them on. What I like to see is cosplayers in costume dancing. Lol, I remember there was a Vash with some raver lights and he did what everyone would do, but it was Vash! So people cheered him on. I wanna try to wear my Robo Ky outfit one night, but it hard to keep the mask from falling.

Everywhere.

Including peoples' faces.

I was being sarcastic, but you have a fair argument regardless. :p I admit defeat now. *lowers head*

We should have like a quick dance class before the dances to at least help us find some sort of rhythum. ^^

you got served...bwahahahahahahahahahaha! oh man what a horrid, stereoypical black film. me and my friend actually paid money to see it just cuz we like bad movies so much. it was good times. the dancing was pretty cool though.
i hate circles sometimes. they take up too much space on the floor and its inevitable that after someone just did something really nice, here comes a group of stupid kids (usually drunk girls) to get in the middle of it and act a fool. how annoying. no one wants to see you try and shake something you don't got and slosh beer all over the floor.

hmm I'll proberly get booed and hissed at this comment, But I think glowsticks should be outlawed!! esp those on a string!! I know the day when one will hit me on the head and when I come too my body will be ontop of the lifeless corpse of the person who threw it with my fingers wrapped around their throats. ^_^ hehe what a cheerful image!!

Yo Archelon you got award winning moves!! ^_^ a la Thriller style! teehehe

I like it very much if they played some J-hip-hop, i've got some that is really good and very nice to dance too! and would really love it if they played some old school hiphop and 80's.

Some people are just too proud of their glowsticks...all though they suck at it. They try to make it look pretty by using strings, but only know like three tricks on it, four out of the three (does that add up?) can kill someone nearby. There are lots of people waving the sticks around...that's a waste of glowsticks. Strings SHOULD be banned...unless you can do it well without killing someone.

I believe that their are restrictions on the length of strings. I believe that their should be some enforcement as to where these strings should be dances. Also I'm sure the same goes for people that dance around people with strings, yeah they should stay a safe distance.

As for glow sticks I can't see whats wrong with them. If someone is bad with them that is your opinion. I always thought dancing was suppose to be a creativity and at least fun.

what's wrong w/ glowsticks? i'll tell ya what's wrong w/ em! those damned sticks of glowing goo re-inforce the pathetic state of being of someone on e or k- thats what. oooo pretty colors and bright things. christ- do you know how lame that is? you dont get dancing, you get idiots waving it stupidly in front of someone's face. i used to have fun w/ glowsticks until i started attracting f*ed up kids who wanted to stare at them for hours and crowd my bustin grooves space.

I think the glowsticks being stupid are just from bad glowstick experiances. I don't really think there is anything wrong it, though I'm sure some of the things people say are true. But the representing of E users is kinda hard to follow. If it were people getting distracted by glow sticks because they were using E, wouldn't that make them bad and not the glowsticks? Unless Glowsticks have an underground use for supporting drugs.

All I think glowsticks are used for are being attractive, lights in a very dark room to help you see and objects that you can create stimulating streams of light from. Yes I understand many people wave them around, but that is their form of dance. Whether bad or good, it still isn't right to judge.

But what do I care, I mean I hardly use glowsticks. Sometimes I think they slow me down and stuff. I don't even know many tricks with them, but I do what I can with what I know. I think Glowsticks and anything related are a form of stimulant that is not created by a drug.

But my question now is who has had previous dance experiance? I've had some swing classes, salsa, tango and Hustle. Sometime I can see a dancer or musician by their rythem and the way they dance. I've met some people that take ballet and even gymnastics.

I feel that's debateable, sir. If their use of glowsticks while dancing endangers anyone else, then it is fair to judge. Albeit, they may not intentionally be trying to hurt anyone, it is a lot of carelessness on that person's part if someone does; they, having the glowsticks, have a responsibility to ensure that they are using them properly, and ensuring that they have sufficient room to do so. Granted, the others have a responsibility, too, it's not uncommon for some poor bystander to get whacked in the *insert body part choice here*. If I was that bystander in question, I'd judge and then have a few choice words.

amen Initial Diesal, those who know a few dance themes are prob better to watch too than any glow sticks(which I happen to like). Accidents happen
with everything, but to make it a "fun" dance must the staff totally get rid of the glowsticks?

I'll be on the stage most of the time Friday night helping DJ Maiku with picture and video-taking for his website, so I probably won't 'dance' much at all, although I kinda want to. I guess I'll see how things go >>;

I think I'm gonna pick up some glowsticks at my local party store or extremeglow.com before I go. I dunno how much they sell them for at the con, or if they even do (it'll be my first Otakon afterall). I'm just gonna hang a bunch on myself and look pretty ^^;;

I'll be going to the dance dressed as a modified Sasuke but I probably won't dance either. I'm not a dancer...but the Shikamaru and Naruto I am going with wanted to go and wanted to dress up..so I kind of get dragged along. It will be fun to just watch though. Shikamaru does that raver dancing and will probably have glowsticks so I'll just stand back and observe all the glowing dancers.

glowsticks do support drug use dammit! that is why they should be banned for they are drug paraphanelia (sp?)!!! i'm just joking. as usual... anywho i don't like this bystander thing. i think that bothers me the most. i've only reached like level 1 of ballet :( i decided it was too difficult to balance art classes and all that jazz with dance classes. i leave the dancing to my sister. but i still toy w/ the idea of getting up to en pointe... i wish :sulk:

1) the rave last year blew ass, I mean seriously. It was like the same song was being played over and over, over and over again.
2)It smelled horrible. I forget that geeks forgo the deodorant sometimes.
3) The glow sticks weren't that bad.. Let the people have glowsticks if they want so I can yoink them and snap them over their costumes.:)
4) I tried to request stuff and they looked at me like I had 3 heads. I hope they accept requests this year without attitude.
5) I'm very picky about my hip-hop but it's better than hours of techno without the Cheat.
6) The rave is there for the 15 year olds who can't go anywhere else so let them have it...it's just not for me..and of course did you really expect anime geeks to be able to dance?

Wow, so it's either look stupid or look stupid looking at how lame the stupid people are trying to dance. Seriously, when I went about the dance thread. I could understand some "last year sucked." But man, the whining doesn't end.
Last time I checked I knew some people knew how to dance. Unless I was hallucinating, I go to the dance because... omg it's like a dance! If friends are there, bam. Got something to do, if people are spreading the circle I give it a shot or two. I wanna hear about someone learning some new break dance moves not glow sticks are lame and fan boys can't dance. I know fan boys can't dance, I've seen this guy try to do some Russian kick dancing and wouldn't get off the circle for like minutes. People will save the jokes for the internet because thats where everyone lets out their cries and whines.

So I'll be at the dance with my friends, catch a few moves with some of the break dancers and old school dancers. Do a few moves and then head out to a party, drink and be merry.
