Hello.

I need some help..

Our only fabric store for a good 50 miles is closing. All fabric is on clearance of course and I want to do a really nice costume before I lose the chance.

The costume itself doesn't look hard..I've wanted to do this forever; I adore Testament. But I can't find any reference pics at all. If someone could help me with this at all I'd be very grateful.

General questions:

1.) our Hancock's doesn't have Pleather...(what I originally wanted to make the outfit out of and the outfit's not quite shiney enough for PVC) They have only really thick vinyl. I've used vinyl before, and I don't know that it would be suitable for Testament's more flowing skirt.. Not to mention it would just be really uncomfortable.. Is there any good substitute for it? I was thinking that shiney-esque material used in formal dresses might work. It's semi-stiff and thick enough to not have to line it, but I definately forgot the name of it..^^; Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

2.) What kind of buckles are on the top and skirt??? (I'm sorry I don't have any refs right now, I realize this is a hard question without them..) But the ones on the top kind of look like the type found on overalls...O_o

3.) binding....um..yeah..It doesn't work well enough with me... :lost: Unfortunately for someone who has yet to actually cosplay a female, I'm too..."gifted" at the top... To get a decent look for tighter tops, I have to lay a lot of hurt on myself with binding. Given the tightness of Testament's shirt, would it work okay if I did just a little binding and darted the top so it fit tight enough? I'd be more of a fem Testament but I'd rather not hurt myself.

Thanks in advance for any help. ^^'

You might want to try and find a silky or slinky fabric, or a very light one (not in color, but in texture and weight).

It will be a bit harder to work with, but it would probably look better, since it would drape nicely.

You can also try hitting up deviantart.com for reference pictures and such... That or google image search...

For the binding, ace bandages usually work prety well and such. Just be sure not to put them on too tight since they will keep constricing throughout the day. Just put them on nice and snug and they will tighten up more. If they get too tight, be sure to take them off and put them back on or you could risk cracking a rib.

I'm not sure what buckles they are, but I was at Walmart today and found some belt buckles for only like, $1...

But yeah, try deviantart.com...

1. Testament's clothes are NOT shiny. They aren't shiny in the portraits or in the sprites. Only in his original GG design did his outfit have any shine to it. I would suggest a nice, THICK black cotton or matte vinyl. As matte as you can get. Whichever is more cost effective. If you use cotton, interface the hell out of the top so it has accuracte stiffness.

2. If you want them 100% accurate, you'll likely have to make them. They do sell similar shaped buckles, but you will have to modify them to make them look accurate.

3. If you're hurting yourself binding, you're not binding correctly. It's not that you "can't" do it because of your size, because I've seen women who are decidedly larger than normal bind well. Given the natured of Testament's top, it will look like you have well developed pectoral muscles, which work to your advantage. Trying to do a feminized Testament will just end up looking bad.

Im also cosplaying Testament!
I could email you all of my reference shots. I have his entire sprite sheet and a ton of art of him.
You can brush on black airbrush paint onto regular thick vinyl by the way and it adds sufficient shine without streaking or danger of pealing (airbrush paint is so thin its like a stain! and it goes on easy with a foam brush).

Also the buckles um...yeah im having to make those. You can do this either by cast molding or sculpting. Im still deciding on what materials to use for it. (bondo? sculpey? fiberglass? hotglue?) but Ill let you know what I find out.
When do you need this cosplay done?

GAH I love you shaowebb. I especially love the back shot. Thanks so very much. ^^ From my little crafting experience I would think you could possibly do it with metal. When it's heated it bends and shapes if you know how to do it. I've seen it done at least. I've never worked with fiberglass so I won't say anything on it.^^; I have until September to finish the costume, but I need my materials within another 8 weeks.

Danzikumaru: Sorry. The character art was the only thing I was able to find considering I don't own the game, and it DID reflect light. Don't believe me look for yourself: http://i11.tinypic.com/48gxws6.jpg Cotton doesn't reflect light like that. And I went ahead and judged by that first because it's in better detail than the game graphics.

Evidently I'm going to have to find a different binding thread on another site, because Ace bandage doesn't work well enough.

I don't know if you've seen all of the GGXX portraits, but they ALL do that, even things we KNOW are cotton or denim, such as Sol's vest. That's just chocked up to Daisuke's inability to draw fabric. He actually identifies the material at matte leather in his character notes in one of the mooks. The sprites, of course, tell a wholly different story, and are the most accurate and consistent artwork you are going to get. Using Daisuke's sprite art is DEFINITELY better than using his portrait work. It's just the whole inconsistency thing.

Also, the binding thread in the crossplay section here has more methods listed than the ace bandage method. Hell, my wife uses a sports bra and duct tape and it does wonders. But, again, like I said, if it doesn't compact completely, the top will give the look of a manly chest, so you don't have to worry TOO much.

Trust me, I'm one of this site's A1 Guilty Gear fanatics. I doubt there's any question I can't answer.

I've been on that thread. The sports bra thing with ace doesn't help enough, and I'm kind of wary of seriously damaging something with the duct tape, like my ribs... I've tried a couple other methods, but not many are useful for such a small top such as Testament's. I'll do what I can though and just practice more. I'll perhaps try to duct tape method in the future if I can find out it's not too hazardous.

Okay. I've seen most of the portraits, but I didn't know anything about the artist so I just assumed they would be more accurate. If it's a matte leather, would regular vinyl work then? Cause God knows I have a ton of it. It's not shiney, it actually has a very convincing leather look to it. I'm just worried about how stiff it is.

The leather-look vinyl would be fine. Testament's clothes really AREN'T shiny...I made mine out of plain cotton. Also...I bind with a sports bra and duct tape and have NEVER hurt myself. The tape doesn't compress and KEEP compressing over the time you're wearing it. The only time I hurt myself was tape stuck to my skin.

Oh yeah, Daisuke can never draw the same thing the same way twice in his portrait work. His sprite work was consistent because, by nature, it HAD to be, so he stuck with a single design a lot more.

And as my wife said, both the matte vinyl (I assume leftovers from an Org. XIII cloak?) and the duct tape method will work just fine! If we steer you wrong, you'll have all the right to hate us later, lol.

Okay then. :3 That's less fabric to buy, yay~. The vinyl's left over from a handful of J-Rock costumes, and an original outfit i made. I WISH I had done an Org XIII cloak..I wanna play Axel or Xemnas but no one in our group wants to do KH with me. ><

And I will try that binding method. I'll trust ya. Thanks for the help guys, time to get to work. ^^ OH and since Testament's top doesn't have any kind of sleeves or straps, what should i use as replacement for a sports bra?

A tight fitting tube top. Or do what I did and wear a sports bra, but tuck the straps into the sides...but that started slipping. I recommend the tube top idea much better.

Okay, cool. :3 I tried the duct tape with a sports bra and it worked pretty well. Will it start to hurt real bad after a while?

It shouldn't. It's never hurt Kim, anyhoo. You'll want to breath from your stomach, though.

Okay, the breathing thing's no problem. I do that anyway; oh the things you learn in karate.

Quick question on binding: would it work best to wrap up or down?

I think I have a cheap way to make your buckles.
This should work and be very accurate and cheap as well as allow you to make multiple exact pieces.
The quality is entirely dependant on how well you can sculpt this though.

"Quick cheap buckle sculpting and casting"
Get some air dry clay and sculpt each piece and allow it to dry.
Then sand these perfectly round when dry.
Now get more airdry clay and cover these scultped pieces with vaseline and tie some fishing line around them.
Press them into the clay to create an indention of them and then pull them out by the lines when the clay is semi hardened.
Once these things harden you will have molds.
Now get a hot glue gun. And I mean one of the HOT ones that use the really dense glue sticks.
Rub vaseline in your molds.
Put some thread in them and hang the ends outside of the mold.(fishing line will melt)
Gun your glue into the molds and allow to harden.
Then pull on the lines to pop your shapes out. Prime with purple primer (used in plumbing found near plumbing at lowes. Itll make rubber and plastics tacky feeling) and Paint as desired.
Clear coat as needed with either polyurethane or Krylon clear glaze sprays.

I made Testament and had alot of the same problems XD The costume itself isnt that hard but, I ended up making my own buckles out of foamie and sculpey, although it looked pretty good.

I used pleather though, Im not sure what other fabrics would be used for it. ><

Good luck with it! I LOVE Testament cosplays *-*
