View Full Version : making pockets?

There never seems to be any place to put things (other than in a bag) when I'm in costume and I know other people have this problem too....
I've decided that on the costume I'm currently making that I'd add side pockets. It has side seams... but the pattern doesn't come with pockets and I can't seem to find any information online about making pockets! Can anybody provide me with some good information on making pockets?

I've never made pockets, to be honest. But, I think the concept is pretty simple; you just need to make a . . . well, semicircle, but longer than that . . . what to call it . . . rectangle with round corners. ^^ Just sew that into the side seam, and you're set. Take out a pair of pants (not jeans, it'd be harder to see on that), and flip the pocket inside out, it should be easy to see how it's made and connected to the pants/shorts.
lol, um, maybe someone else can be more intelligible. But turn some of your pockets inside out, that should help you conceptualize it.

I don't know why I hadn't though of that before my post (I've been looking at pockets in my skirts and such for a awhile since I realized that ^_^;;) I think I've decided to do something akin to built in pockets. The pocket pattern stuff is connected to the fabric and then just sorta folded in so there aren't any obvious seams for pockets. That's kinda what I'm looking for because the uniform doesn't have pockets and I'd like it to look as accurate as I can. ^_^

You can actually buy premade pockets at the store too! LOL the concept of pockets by themselves strikes me as funny for some reason... but anyway, they are actually nice if you don't have a serger because the edges are serged so they don't fray! ^_^
