View Full Version : Another curiosity post: where is everyone staying?

Yeah, just for location sake, what hotels/motels/street corners does everyone have to call home for the weekend.
I'll be staying at... the Tremont Plaza Hotel. We somehow ended up with a suite..O.o for like.. 119 a night. Not that I'm minding or anything (anyone needing a nice place should check it out). Problem is, it's a good ways from the center.
http://www.otakon.com/images_content/location_map.jpg

Number 9 on the map. <.< Oh well. I guess it's not that bad. I mean, I've been to DC and've walked a good 20 blocks, so this is probably nothing. Not to mention I'll be coming back from 3 weeks of camping the night before we leave, so I had better be in shape by then.

So, what about you guys? I say we carpool.

I'm staying in the Days Inn, along with 3 - 6 other people in the same room. It's only one city block from the Convention Center, so there isn't that long of a walk. Which is great for changing costumes.

Heh...well this is my first Otakon so...I hope they have locks...buuuut...if not, I'm fine with keeping my stuff in the car. Ehh...parking is going to be a major problem 'tho. Gah...anyone know of any good spots to park near if not at the convention center?

khamryn

They don't have locker rooms to my knowledge, I've never seen any. ::Blinks.:: But they could be hiding them, why don't you all contact the con staff and ask them? They'd probably know. ^_^ As for parking.. I have no idea. @@ ::Not local, doesn't drive.::

Actually Balitmore can be dangerous ... You have to be really careful. A few blocks in the wrong direction and you're in trouble. And I get enough weird people following me/harassing me in costume as it is. I always try to walk around with at least one of the guys in my group outside of the convention center.

I'll see you all there!

Staying at the Wyndam Hotel, just like last year. We took the 6 hour train there(I think it was 6), so we had quite a ways to walk... I forget how many blocks it was from the station to the hotel...14?@_@ We've got 7 of us in two rooms this year, 1 for the guys and 1 for the girls.(No funny business with us. ;) ) We wanted to go to The Days Inn, but we weren't fast enough in reserving rooms. :(

Last year we were caught in the rain, costumes were soaked through... bummer. BRING UMBRELLAS OR TRASHBAGS JUST IN CASE!!! Just a thoughtful warning! :)

khamryn
04-28-2003, 12:24 PM
Lialia- I've been harassed not even a block from the con center.. dressed male, with my guy friend and girl friend... so I agree with Dark. And if they start talking to you, do NOT encourage them. (@.x the girl with us did, I angled us into a hotel so I could get help if I needed to...) but yeah.. pepper spray might be a good idea. Just in case.

isami

Studmaster: If you could ask at the Otakon boards, that would be wonderful. Thank you so much!

Hmm. I've been around DC and such... but then again, DC is a really good area for the obvious reasons. I dunno.... I"m sure we'll all make due. It's no biggie. Besides, Otaku can be scary people when provoked. *insert evil cackle here*

~Isa

P.S. Don't forget to wear little sticker things on your badge so we can pick out cosplay.com peoples! I just bought a pack, so if anyone needs one there, I'll most likely have. XD Yay!

Stickers huh? That's a good idea...
Anyway, I'm staying at the Wyndham with Hotohori 74 and 8 other people (3 rooms). I wanted to get one at the Day's Inn (big costumes are tough to walk far in) but that was full so I tried the Holiday Inn and that was full so we ended up where we are now. It's a pain to walk but other then that, I can't complain. It seems like a nice hotel. :)

Managed to swing two quads in the Days Inn for my group of 12.

We gave up on the Marriot after two years. The first year, the front desk refused to give us extra sheets for our pull-out bed-couch, they kept telling us that no room in the hotel had a pull-out after they renovated. We had to get a maid to tell them that we weren't making it up, and last year we found a giant hell-bug (3 inch cockroach) wandering our room on that saturday. We ended up capturing it and taking it down to the front desk as a little bit of revenge for all the stupidity we had to deal with them in the past. They didn't even bother doing anything besides giving us extra towels a day later.

DigiKitty
04-28-2003, 08:49 PM
Stickers?? Oooooooh!! Where?! *searches all over for cosplay.com stickers* Gah...gots to get me some stickers...where do you find the stickers, isami? T.T

isami
04-28-2003, 08:58 PM
lol. they're not official cosplay.com stickers. you see... a couple otakon threads back, we were discussing how we can spot other cosplay.com members since ALOT of us are going, and someone suggested using some sort of sticker. We agreed on a bright orange or some other neon color, I believe. I'll have to backtrack and look.
But, now that you mention it, making actual cosplay.com stickers or maybe tags or something would be a good idea. Maybe we can run the idea by admin to sell. It would help pay for the site. They don't have the store up yet, I don't think. At least the link doesn't work. Hmm.

I reserved a room at the Radisson this year....after last year's fiasco, I wanted to make sure I had somewhere to stay this time around.
And yeah...my mom warned me that Baltimore's not exactly safe at night. Nothing bad happened to me, but you just feel unsafe, even when walking with a large group of friends.

Nikol
04-29-2003, 09:00 AM
I got a room for 4 (with five people actually being in it) at the Holiday Inn... last year I ended up staying not that far from the convention center (The Harbor Court Inn) but it was really expensive, even with four people in a room for two. And for some reason I'm getting the Holiday Inn rate for a double not a quad... but I'm not going to complain about a cheeper room.

And yeah I make sure that no one in my group (I'm the oldest and therefore I feel I have the right to act like the "mom" at times) goes out into the Balitamore streets alone. Always have at least two people together outside the hotel and/or con and make sure one of the two has a key to the room...

SailorAndromeda
04-29-2003, 11:07 AM
We're staying at the Days Inn again. I like the staff there, they're nice ^^
And um, yeah, Baltimore isn't exactly safe. I know someone who's boyfriend was attacked by a homeless guy on Sunday at 3 in the afternoon. And I don't think he was that far from the center.
SO! ALWAYS travel with at least one person (preferrably more), even during the day, if possible. Don't egg hecklers on either. And Otakon does have meeting points so if you're alone, you can at least walk with people going to the same hotel or close.

That might work. But I know lots of people change their Av's often, so I guess only for people who keep their's, it' be good.

Stickers, Stickers. Still have to PM Admin about that. Maybe Aeris. XD When and where they'd be bought is up to them. It's semi-short notice... I dunno, we'll see.

But, as I said before, I have little neon colored stickers for now. ^-^

Hey Isami ^_^ Sheyala and I are at the Wyndham (I'm glad it's right next to the Radisson, a lot of me friends are there!)

Last year, late-nite Baltimore really kinda scared me. I don't want to have to take a cab for a block, so maybe we should have some sort of group-walks, and we should get to know each other (who's going where) so that we can walk back together and such for costume changes and breaks. Oh, and we should recruit some beefy male cosplayers...it'd make me feel safer.

That way, whenever I update it, I don't have to constantly add a new post and take up space and bla bla bla. It'll also be easy for people to find it instead of searching through all the pages and stuff. Does that work for you guys?

LadyXenie- The walk from the Wyndham isn't too bad as long as you plan things out so you don't have to go back too many times. (i.e. forgetting things :p ) But always have someone with you. Apparently the streets of Baltimore aren't that friendly... And bring an umbrella. In that short walk you can get absolutely soaked if it's raining. :( I did last year.

hotohori74
05-05-2003, 06:43 PM
Hehehe... are u implying something cyan???? ;)
Yes, take her advise, bring umbrellas or trashbags to cover yourself with. We all got drenched going from Wyndam to the con center. It wasn't fun... later on it was, but not then.

LadyXenie
05-05-2003, 06:52 PM

any word yet on the *changing rooms*?

cyankirby
05-08-2003, 05:19 PM
If anyone at the Wyndham is bored on Thursday, we'll have two gamecubes (SSBM!!!) and a PS2 in our room so if you want to come play, I'm sure that you will be welcome! :D

And the extra space in the room offer is still open if anyone needs a room... :)

Kurenai
05-08-2003, 08:20 PM
Ahaha...changing rooms....you mean the ones at the con, right?. When I went to it last year (middle of the day saturday) it was closed, lights off, totally empty. But it was doable ^^; I think it would be better to have lockers because bathrooms can be changing rooms in a pinch. But that would be the *sensible* way to do it -_-

Cyankirby: sounds like fun! Have no clue what's going w/my group on thurs. though...

isami
05-08-2003, 08:34 PM
Kurenai: I totally agree. I don't want my stuff stolen. <.<

Kurenai
05-08-2003, 09:04 PM
Well, I sent the BCC a rather pointed but polite letter about lockers. How it'll increase their revenue and their patrons will love them more and such. Plus, if people can stash their dealer's room stuff in lockers, think of how much more they'll buy ^_^

Maybe they'll listen, maybe they won't. Was worth a shot ^^; You guys could overhaul their mailboxes with locker letters, that might work too ^_^

cyankirby
05-08-2003, 10:56 PM
I heard that the changing rooms weren't the safest place in the world for people's stuff. It seems safer to go back to your hotel and change there so you can leave your stuff behind. I suppose if people need to leave a few things (if they're not staying at one of the con hotels) that they can change in our room at the Wyndham. It's a walk but if the changing rooms are the only other option...

RealmRPGer
05-08-2003, 11:23 PM
Yes... well... *ahem* The car will probably end up being our "locker" if that's the case... Well, it'll certainly be the changing room! :D

cyankirby
05-08-2003, 11:27 PM
Yup, better to be careful. Some people have gotten their stuff taken in the past (don't know if it was at Otakon though). You'd be surprised what people will take...

Kurenai
05-09-2003, 12:18 PM
I wouldn't be surprised...it probably happens even when you put stuff down for a second.

And the BCC was like "not our problem" except politely. Oh well.

OOoh! You are going to have SSBM? Ooh, ooh! Can I come, Can I come? I love that game. ..I'll be over at the Shereton, but I don't mind walking. I'm hoping there will be a Tournament at Otakon for SSBM so I can join it. x___X

Maxima
05-15-2003, 02:17 AM
I plan on sitting them all down, giving them a soda or two, and tell them flat out what is to be expected.

Of course that will only be if my life was a perfect world, which of course it isn't.

More than likely, I will get the point across though. I don't want a repeat of of Otakon 01, where they took stuff from the minibar and order lewd movies that went on to my card. ^^;;

DigitalCactus
05-15-2003, 12:09 PM

Maxima
05-16-2003, 12:13 AM
They paid me back in full, and then some. Nothing beats barging into rooms (I always have a keycard for each room) and waking them up early in the morning to give me the extra cash.

They were going to pay me for them anyways, but barging and acting rash in early hours is always fun.

Hikaruchan
05-16-2003, 09:54 AM
I had someone order lewd movie at AWA couple years ago on my card since I had rented the room and the guys went there after Pope Hentai room party busted up (after I left Pope's party went to different room since guys were getting drunk). I did get them to pay for it, but didn't care for that stuff to have been ordered on my card.

moonclarinet
05-16-2003, 01:19 PM
wow...puting 3 rooms on your card is definitely trusting ^_^ good luck with that! our one room is on my card, but i don't think there'll be any partying there...i prefer to go elsewhere and not have to worry about getting all my stuff put away to make room!

which brings me to my question...anyone want to maybe get a holiday inn party going sicne a lot of people seem to be staying there? i was thinking a no-alcohol, just clean fun, maybe movies and gabbing about costumes and con purchases and stuff. add in some ramen making and wackiness will ensue! ^_^

edit: that isn't to say i would be totally against a party in our room, if anyone else there is ok with it...i just know i'm a slob and for everyone else's sake it's probably a bad idea ^_^

Since my friend and I decided to go to Otakon two months ago, money was kind of a problem for us. Although we would've prefered a closer hotel, we had to become cheapos and pick the Best Inn Baltimore hotel, which is about a 10 min. drive to the con.
Plus, even though we are preregistering for all three days, we are only going to be there Saturday. (That is, unless we can make it over to the con sometime in the afternoon on Friday when we get there or the morning of Sunday when we have to leave. I doubt it, though.)

Do you think this might cause many problems for us?

No its not bad a very uh.... fancy.... hotel. It just has some..... problems. Yeah.... I've never been in a different hotel and this would be my 4th year in the W, so I have some..... interesting stories to tell ^^. Like how I poked an old lady in the eye in my Legato costume, how a guy caught me on the stairs and asked me how much my "rate" was for one night in my Arakune (the scanky cross dresser from Angel Sanctuary) costume, how the elevator blinks 2,5,3,9,12,4,14,24,5, before it stopped at my floor number 21 and how it disfunctioned and opened with half of it farther up than the door so we all had to jump off it. Yea the W itself is an adventure^^

At the Days Inn. We might actually have space for one more person in our room, if anyone is still looking for a place to crash. Not sure how much it'd be per person, and you'd be rooming with 2 - 3 strangers....

Last year we stayed at the Radisson. It's pretty far to walk (only like 3 blocks, but it feels like forever) and the hotel itself is kinda snooty towards con-goers (or so it felt like last year)

My boyfriend Shaun and I will be staying at the Holiday Inn, along with 4 of my friends. :) Yay for Holiday Inn peoples!

Is the Holiday Inn very bad about having more than 4 people in the room, as long as you don't say anything? We stayed at the Days Inn last time, so this will my first go at the Holiday Inn.
