View Full Version : Greed FullMetal Alchemist Costume, Help? Material?

My boyfriend is playing as Greed from FullMetal Alchemist. I need to find him a jacket. Here is the problem: It is July. I don't know about you, but in West Virginia, men's fur-trimmed jackets are not plentiful in stores in the summer. I am a perfectionist, so it needs to be really close to the jacket in the show. I need it by end of August. Does anyone know a brand name or have a link to where I could buy one? EDIT: A friend of mine just agreed to make it for me. Now I just need to decide on a material.

Another thing you could do to help is tell me what material I should be looking for. I am a cotton type person so when it comes to any other material, I am completely lost. What material makes up that jacket?

Also, the shirt, at least to me, looks more than just a plain black shirt. It looks rigid from muscles. Is that just a tight shirt or does it have those bumps embroidered? And, again, what material is that? EDIT: Apparently Under Armor would work fine, as long as I can have those red lines made.

Lastly, as a note, I am playing sloth, and a friend of mine is going to make my costume. Again, being the material-incompetent, I do not know what to tell her to use to make it. She suggested 3 things: Silk, satin, and crushed velvet. I don't think any type of velvet would do well. I want to stay true to the character but I can't figure out what material she is wearing. EDIT: Thank you for your suggestions, and as of now, I think I'm going to go with satin.

(Reference pictures always help.)

Which version of Sloth are you doing? Her in the clothes she wears at HQ, or her Homunculus dress?

homunculus dress. People keep telling me satin, is that accurate?

for some reaon i am thinking spandex on bothe accounts that way you get the skin tight coverageonly probem i see with it though t wont be as shiny as sil or satin(unless they make shiny spandex that i dont know about) i dont know if that really helped at all

Spandex may work well for the shirt, but i don't know about the dress, especially since it flairs out onto the ground, and you don't want that to be stretchy.

Satin is the bane of cosplaying. Never use it for anything, unless somehow it's mentioned (within canon) that the outfit is made out of it.

For Greed's jacket, you may wanna check eBay for it. After all, eBay isn't dictated by seasons. If eBay doesn't work, you can always buy a regular jacket and add the fur trim to it with either faux fur or rabbit fur, whichever you're more comfortable using.

Sloth's dress would look very nice with silk charmeuse. It's the same kind of material that's used to make fancy dresses; it has a simple and appropriate shine to it, but it's not cheap-looking like stretch spandex does.

What my Greed-cosplaying friend did (go visit her cosplay account, DippedInEbony, or my Envy gallery if you want to see pictures) was take a brown leather jacket, cut the sleeves off and sewed trim around the collar. It looked great, and it's much easier than taking loads of time and money to find the omg perfect one. Making the perfect one is much easier. ;D

for greed's shirt i would use spandex and for sloth velvet

Greeds Jacket, i suggest somewhat of a black jean jacket, or maybe a more like a tux jacket, even one of the shinier fabrics, your choice. But you can take a jacket,a nd use faux fur for the collar neh?

Black jean sounds nice for the jacket but I don't want the lines. Tallus, thank you for the suggestion about not going with silk and going with silk charmeuse, but isn't that material really expensive? $40 a yard is the price I'm seeing for it, and unfortuantely I cannot afford that at this time in my life. So not only is it not cheap-looking, but it's not cheap either :D I checked eBay and I could not find a good one, but I'm going to have a friend make it. She just agreed yesterday, all I need now is to decide on a material.
