View Full Version : Help! Mana's Makeup Is Impossible!

05-07-2003, 05:39 PM
Hey everyone..
I'm doing a cosplay of Mana in September, and his makeup thusfar has me baffled. It wants me dead, I swear.

There's the 'look' i'm trying to replicate. Could any of you give me some suggestions on how to do eyeshadow like his, what colors to use, and the like? The things I'm having the most trouble with are eyes and lips. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Someone actually made a webpage on doing Mana's makeup!

I hope that helps!

I saw that before. :D It's really cool, but doesn't help me much as it's made for asians and I'm not asian :/ Thank you, though!

I don't think not being Asian should make any difference in the application of the makeup... if you want to try to make your eyes appear more Asian, you'll just need to experiment with the eyeliner shapes. Makeup is makeup; faces are faces.

I found that site to be very helpful to me to do Mana's make up properly (and I'm not asian).

It gave me ideas on how to create the "crease" that Mana has, change the shape of my eyes (or at least have the apperance that i did) and how to do his lip sitck properly.

If you can wait about 2 weeks, I can probally whip together a page similar to that with me doing the make up at AN. I just wanna make sure that I have permission from the creator of that page first and I really don't have time right now due to the fact that AN is in 9 days I think.

I gues the most important thing to keep in mind is don't try to match the make-up to the contour of your actual eye / lid or mouth...his make-up goes *way* off the perimeter of his actual features. So really exaggerate it. Um, and if you're brave, wax your eyebrows off and start fresh. ^_-

ditto to what Yui said.

Mana's upper lip is EXTREMELY thin and he compensates for it by "coloring outside of the lines" He curves with the slant of the lipstick stick on each side ~ it has that definite shape.

Another important piece of advice: Mana's face is NEVER pure white "clown" kind of face paint/make up. It is always the Geisha kind of matte and appears in a very fine layer. Sure maybe he went a little thicker in the older days of MM - but in more recent times - it is a thin coat and never a harsh, blinding white.

Remember: apply in long, even swipes, never circles! And POWDER it down, baby! Invest in a nice POOF POOF for powdering if you plan to cosplay as Mana a lot. One that won't ruin the face paint in case you do use it.

[btw - not to be a bitch or anything, but that site stole most of her images. I took down my Yu~ki Gallery b/c of her]

Or, if you'd like to keep your eyebrows, you can cover them over with brow sealers, or use soap to smooth them over, rather than having to wax them off.

The key here is just to practice and experiment. Obviously, it isn't impossible, as it does get done, both by Mana and/or his makeup artists and by regular cosplayers. So just take as much time with it as you need and keep practicing.

Erm, but also.. any suggestions for what brands of makeup to use? I'm having trouble finding a nice light blue shade of lipstick.. And also, where can I find good quality wigs that are affordable?

Sephora.com is fantastic for make up - they use to sell a wonderful white base that you still may be able to find on the website. They have 4 stores you can also visit if you're in the area. My biggest BIGGEST must have suggestion for his make up is SPRAY FIXATIVE. They sell it at all theatrical stores, and I think sephora has one you can buy as well. if your lips are anything like mine, keeping blue lipstick on there is hellish. the spray fix seals it, so you can eat, at it won't budge. It's my must have when doing Mana.

Also - for eyes - eyeliner pencils. Mana has very distinct eyeshadow lines. (he usually has one contour going around the eye on the lid, and the lid itself white...) use a a dark matching color of what you're using to draw out his eyeshadow (if it's light blue, a medium dark blue. If it dark blue, go black) then apply the eyeshadow over it. It will hold the shape of the make up, and it makes it much more expressive. then use a white liner to lighten the eyelid itself. Sephora's stuff is again great for this.

Lips - first cover them entirely in the white foundation you'll be using- draw out the contour first - make sure to look at the picture while doing this, and practice upper lip size a few times. you might want to use a white eyeliner first so your mistake can be erased. then go over with a dark blue eyeliner - fill in ALL of your lips that are being covered in blue with this eyeliner, and then apply the lipstick and afterwords fixative. Do it this way, and your lips will hold all day.

I hope this helps. ^^;;

lol well, this is what I do
you have to wash your face (cuz dirty face+makeup=pepperoni pizza face) and pin your hair back.
put lotion on your face and apply an oil-free liquid foundation. This will give you an air-brush kinda look. and I say to apply lotion (even if you have naturally oily skin, because it will suck out all the oil from your skin *cuz it's oil-free* and make it obnoxiously itchy...trust me on this, don't experiment) depending on which look you're doing, you can put baby powder on your face to make it whiter.

the lips in my opinion are the easiest thing to do (past the foundation). choose the lip color you want and make sure you have a lip or eye pencil of that color as well as lipstick (if you're doing black, you'll want liquid eyeliner-sound wierd, but trust me!) prep your lips by putting chapstick on em. now this is where it gets slightly tricky. depending on the size of your lips, you'll need to do different things.
if they're thin, just make a very distinct "v" in the upper lip with the eye/lip pencil. go slightly over your natural curve in your upper lip and slightly lower than the side of your mouth. for your lower lip, draw it as close to your natural lip-line as possible. fill in with lipstick and if it's black, fill in with lipstick and cover with liwuid eyeliner OR just use eyeliner (it makes it smoother)

if you have "kissable lips" as a friend of mine puts it, just follow your natural lip-line, follow as close to your lower lip as you can, and don't forget the "v"

the eyes are a pain for me cuz I can't see and I don't have contacts cuz they're expensive for me Dx but I can tell you what to do ;p
or better yet...
just click "next"

this is a basic thing up until the eye shadow color. choose what you want ;p
