I hated Trigun's dub. haven't seen RK yet.. and don't intend to.

um.. Kiki's Delivery Service, or Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, or ZOIDS... I suppose.

I really like what I've seen of the Escaflowne dub (only 8 eps) -- in fact, I much prefer Dilandau's English voice to his Japanese. Excel Saga is another good one although a lot of cultural things can't be translated well. Also, I like the Tenchi dubs only because I originally saw it on Cartoon Network. I got so used to the dub voices I don't want to watch it in anything else ^^;;.

Actually...thats the first time I ever heard someone say they dislike the trigun dub o_o

And I do have Escaflowne series on my to-buy list..but wont get to it for a long time ox;..i heard the movie though...they ruined it w/the characters oO

I know I am a dubbie and MKR is my fave anime, but its dub is FANTASTIC. It has been deemed one of the best dubs by many many people- dialogue has not been changed much, voices are very suitable, there is no censoring or cuts, and in the English dub the names were kept the same. Plus I actually like the translations and singing of the OPs and EDs.

Other good ones are- RK, ROLW, Escaflowne (yeppers, Dilandau sounds even more psychotic in English), EVA, GW, and Pokemon ;)

Jibrille

Goldenboy is a rockin DUB! :D
Cowboy Bebops is pretty good too, and Slayers,...hhmmmm...
Irresponsible Captain Tylor is REALLY good for a DUB... uh.. those are the only outstanding ones i can think of at the moment...

^^

why am I posting in this thread??? I really dislike dubs actually. But I do have to second Jibrille's mention of Golden Boy. Doug Smith is too cool for words. The EVA dub is tolerable. Those are the only two series I watch dubbed.

Cowboy Bebop and any of the Hayao Miyazaki dubs were good. Gundam Wing and Angel Sanctuary were *decent*

mmm, I agree with Babbit Chan. I thought Princess Mononoke was an excellent dub. Maybe it had something to do with all those high cost actors....

El Hazard! Fujisawa sensei and Junnai own in that dub.

Goldenboy was damn funny. I think the dub has to be the funniest version.

I agree with the el hazard thing.... its too bad Motoko is so bad though (Im not sure if his name is right)

I heard hellsing is good, but I have yet to see it. there has been much debate in the hellsing LJ group and yahoo group

Edit:Oh yeah, the dragon half dub is awesome! it is so much better dubbed than subbed!

I agree with the previous mentions of Goldenboy and Cowboy Bebop being excellent dubs. In addition, I thought Revolutionary Girl Utena was great in dub form.

Oh, and the Rurouni Kenshin dub is pretty good, I just have a few slight problems with some of the voices.

I think the best dubs are Cowboy Bebop, Shinesman, Ranma 1/2, and Gundam Wing. Slayers was pretty good, as was Tenchi Muyo!, serial experiments lain, Rurouni Kenshin, and Sakura Wars.

I watch subs or dubs: whatever's available. There are very few dubs I dislike, and I probably dislike them because I saw subbed first (Cases: Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, Arc the Lad... I hate the dubs for all of those, but probably because I was already used to the Japanese voices)

And although it seems to be popular here, I must admit that I despise Dilandau's dub voice. ^^;; Maybe it's because I saw the sub first, but I fell in love with his lovely Japanese voice, and the first time I saw the dub it was out of sheer morbid curiosity, which normally ruins things.

I must agree that Rurouni Kenshin is an outstanding dub... but I was truely impressed with Princess Mononoke... that was almost a word for word translation!

Well, for me...I used to hate dubs until I was introduced to the Ranma OVA dubs. I actually found the english translation of the first vol. (Shampoo's Sudden Switch and Tendo Family Christmas Scramble) to be actually funnier than the japanese version and I found myself laughing so hard, I couldn't breathe. After that, I considered the Ranma english cast to be either equal or better than the japanese cast, though I still love both versions to this day...At first, the first season of Ranma kinda sucked, but as the years went on, the cast got better. Now, whenever I get a new anime DVD, I tend to listen to the english dub first, then switch over to the japanese track...

Ranma, I would consider one of the top dubs out there, thanx to Ocean Studios. However, hands down, Cowboy Bebop and Macross Plus I consider the best dubs out there, w/ mentioning Princess Momonoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, Evangelion, Nadesico (funnier than the japanese version), ShinesMan (simialir to Nadesico), GoldenBoy and Lodoss War (both original OAV and TV series)...just to name a few.

ARSLAN SENKI!

I like the dub /so/ much better than the original... probably because the lovelylovely English accents fit with the character's caucasian looks better than Japanese, and because the dialogue was translated in very good classy English.

And boy can the English /act/... I wish more anime was dubbed in Europe, they do a much better job than North Americans. (Well except France, French-dubbed anime /consistantly/ sucks. And, I guess this might be related to anime, because Gargoyles had top-notch all-north-american voice acting.)

*puts on flame-retardant suit*

And, if we're only talking about the quality of the voices, not the way it was heavily cut, I like the first season of Sailor Moon. Seriously. I think the VAs were really good for their characters (Nephrite's voice was /so/ sexy) and I even like Zoisite's voice better in English than Japanese.

I can't listen to Gundam Wing in English, probably because I have seen it /way/ too often since 1995 and I am too used to the Japanese voices. Esca is pretty good in English BUT Van's VA really needs to emote more, as his Japanese counterpart did a much better job of making us understand what Van was feeling.

Seeing how I've been a big Gundam fan for years (yesh, that included G Gundam...^^) ever since seeing Zeta, Double Z and Stardust Memories almost 10 years ago, I was very hesitent and against Bandai for dubbing it when it came over here almost 4 years ago. I can agree that the Japanese version of Gundam W has some of the best seiyuu talent, but after giving the dub the benefit of the doubt, I was actually satisfied that Bandai went to Ocean Studios to do it...my only gripe was that Quatre's voice sounds kinda weird, but passable. Anywayz, I really consider Ocean to be the best when it comes to dubbing anime...though they also have their flaws as well *Cough* CardCaptors *Cough*

So far, what I've seen of who Bandai has hired for their dubs (either Ocean and ZRO Limits/Animaze...) of Gundam...or any of their other titles...I've been quite satisfied. I used to be against any type of dubbing for any anime, but after seeing Ocean's job on Ranma OAV series, I was more open to it and the quality seems to be getting better, w/ Cowboy Bebop and Macross Plus being the spokestitle for really awesome dubbing! ^.^

...I don't know, just adding my 2 cents here. :D

I really think that people when making these threads, should start nameing them with stuff like "In your opinon", because that all this is, and sometimes people seem to forget that.

Although as for my favorite dubs Macross plus and Ranma instantly come to mind. And its a damn good thing they redid ROLW because the old dubbing made my ears bleed, I quite like the new version.

I noticed some people listing esca as a good one but I found the voices to not quite fit the characters, I dunno if seeing it subbed first affected that any. But I thought the Esca movie dub was pretty good (unlike alot of people that seem to judge the esca movie based on the story and such of the series, I thought it was awsome, by far one of my favorite anime movies yet).

I think the "in your opinion" bit goes without saying for threads like this, Foxwolfe! But just in case it doesn't, these are all in my opinion. :p

Dubs I Really Like:
Wings of Honneamise
Evangelion
Star Blazers (Yamato)
GoldenBoy (miles better than the original)
Mononoke (except for Billy Bob Thornton)
Magic User's Club (the episode or two i saw)
Spriggan (not that much acting is really required in this one. i think *i* could have dubbed it acceptably!)
Tenchi Muyo
Valyrie Profile (okay, it's a game, but...!)

Dubs I Think Are Watchable:
Cowboy Bebop (generally okay, but it sounds like they're *trying* to sound cool rather than being cool)
Kare Kano / His&Her Circumstances (I like Miyazawa's voice a lot, along with the others, except for Arima who sounds like he's 30)
Macross Plus
Escaflowne (except for Dilandu's voice which is maybe the most horrible thing ever to fall upon my ears)
Trigun

Lemme see...I watch a lot of dubs instead of subs (I have a 6-month old kid...it's a lot easier to listen to the soundtrack instead of constantly pausing it) so here's my list of good dubs:

Golden Boy
GunSmith Cats :D
Sailor Moon (up until S)
Blue Seed
Ranma 1/2 (up until the 4th season, when boy-type Ranma's voice went to hell)

I'm sure there's more but it's early ;)

I just like to mention stuff like that cause alot of times comments apear like "Well even though subs are better this or that dub is ok" etc etc. I personally like alot of others, perfer to watch certain anime subbed, and certain stuff dubbed.

Ideally, I'd rather watch dubs. I mean, the original directors intended you to listen to the dialogue, not read it. Also, if you don't know Japanese and you're reading the English subs, you don't know which words the Japanese seiyuu are emphasizing.

However, I'm really picky about dub quality- most of the domestic dubs sound like crap to me in terms of acting quality and faithfulness to the original. So, I go with subs 95% of the time.

Also, I tend to read very quickly, so the number one complaint against subs ("I can't follow the action because I'm busy reading subtitles") doesn't apply to me. However, when I do find a dub I like, it is kind of relaxing not to have to read the subtitles. ^_^

(Actually, I almost forgot the REALLY ideal situation - learning Japanese! Then, to heck with the subs/dubs issue!)

I like to listen to dubs a lot when I hand-sew... because listening to the Japanese track takes more concentration (since my Japanese is not nearly as good as my English) and then I tend to make mistakes in my stitches. LOL

For me dubs generally serve as "radio plays" when I need to do something else but want some sort of easy entertainment to keep myself busy. Except for Arslan and the first season of Sailor Moon which I will watch only dubbed. ^____^

Oh, Please Save my Earth French dub was great too, btw. As was "Remi sans famille".

El Hazard was a decent dub. I haven't seen it in a while, but the voices matched and pronunced very well.

Cowboy Bebop was pretty good. I can handle it either way. Trigun was tolerable. Sometimes when there's a character with an American name, it's nice to hear it sound American rather than in Engrish. Shows like a space western like Trigun, I mean. I can handle an Elza Gray engrish pronunciation. ^^;

I liked the Bebop and Trigun dubs myself. I watched both of those series dubbed because that's all my friend had.. it was decent though. ^_^ Yay.

I really abhor the Rurouni Kenshin dub. ._. I haven't watched much of it, but Sano sounds like some 40 year old trucker with a pot belly that eats Campbells Soup for dinner every night in some run down truck stop. >_>; And I haven't seen it with my own eyes (heard with my own ears?), but supposedly they changed all of KEnshin's cool Oro's to lame groaning noises like "AAAEEEEEHHH" and "UUUNNNHHH" or something. -_-;

Well, first, I would like to know WHO actually likes the CCS dub. I mean, it is one of the worst dub version that i have actually SEEN, and the cutting and making up new epsoides... *shudder* Well, i DO like:
Outlaw star (I play the english with the subtitles and found the script pretty close, and i like Jim's english vioce. Not sure if a girl or boy, though)
Tenchi
Slayers
Generator Gawl (the dub version has the characters say the FUNNIEST stuff, i again watched it with the subtitles and the characters said some things totally off topic it was funny)

Things i will only watch in Japanese:
Gensomaden Saiyuki
CCS (Card Captor Sakura)
DBZ (i don't really watch it, but the Japanese version is just SO much better and funnier)
Escflowne (they cut the epsoides and made the characters voices sort of funny sounding compared to the Japanese voices. It's the chopping of the epsoides that really got me)

I'm sure their are more, but I can't think of any. Oh, and, frankly, the series Earthian scares me. One epsoide, and... and... *shudder* it's not the voices.. but the plot and relationships...

Oh oh did I mention how much I /love/ "Anime Three Musketeers" ("Sous le signe des Mousquetaires") in French?

But then, Musketeers were meant to speak French... hearing them or, say, Louis the XIIIth talking in any other language (whether Japanese or English) is just /wrong/.

*twitch* This thread makes me sad. ^^; I'm such a seiyuu junkie... There are few times I find the English better than the Japanese, if ever. I mean... Ranma 1/2 is probably the best dub I have ever seen. They did a great job of the cast. Cowboy Bebop has a well done dub as well.
But overall, I'd rather hear Yamaguchi Kappei as Ranma and Hayashibara Megumi as Faye (and girl Ranma, for that matter). ^_^
Then again... I've also been slowly learning Japanese since 1997, and I don't always need to look at the subtitles -- plus I'm a very quick reader. XD So subtitled anime makes me happy. Raw anime makes me happy. The acting quality tends to be better, in general, seeing as Japan has SCHOOLS for voiceover work.
I do like a few dub actors. Crispin Freeman is a great actor, and a nice guy on the two occasions I've spoken with him (although nothing can beat Koyasu Takehito as Touga... I just thought Crispin had superior acting skills when I got curious watching the DVD..). I don't watch any of Scott McNeil's dub work (just seen him in Beast Wars.. XD) but he's a great guy too, from the.. um.. three times I've met him. ^_^; Yeah.

Ranma Saotome
09-19-2002, 02:58 AM
Michi I agree with you about Ranma 1/2, except that first 5 or 6 eps weren't that good. They switched VAs for Ranma-chan. I love Venus Terzo! :)

Foxwolfe
09-19-2002, 04:35 AM
I would feel the same way but since I dont know any japanese I would rather take in the show as a whole than have to read what they say. I read the subtitles fast as well that isnt a concern of mine, I would just rather not read them at all. Its just not the same when, lets see how can I put this, like if something is being said and part of it has some kind of emotion behind it, but not knowing japanese I might not know which word it is sometimes. I dunno theres also some series that just because of the voice acting I prefer watching it in japanese regardless, like escaflowne.

Duuude...that's just the tip of the iceberg for my autograph collection!! I also got to meet and get autographs/sketches from:

- Megumi Hayashibara - signed my Ranma-chan poster
- Kenichi Sonoda (character designer of BGC (original series) and creator of GunSmith Cats)- got him to do a sketch of Linna Yamazaki, my fave anime character, as well as putting my name in katakana.
- Rumiko Takahashi and Akemi Takada - they both signed my Lum poster.
- Monkey Punch - got 2 sketches of Lupin III
- Akemi Takada also did a rare thing for me...did a color sketch of Madoka's eyes and hair...many times she mostly does black pen for that.
- Chiho Saito - signed my Utena DVD cover
- Some producers from Giant Robo and Sailor Moon autographed my AX'97 program book.
- Ishiguro-san did a sketch of Space Crusier Yamato at AX'97 for me w/out me attending his panel and getting on the lottery ticket system. He just did one for me while I was waiting for my friend, who attended his panel and got a sketch when he won one from the lottery.

...and there are a few more in what elude me right now. All have funny stories to them ^.^

*Puts hand in back of head and smiles*

Well, I'm kinda the ol' skool anime fan...I used to go to alot of local conventions back in the dayz, to meet alot of my favorite VAs, artists, directors, etc. Now, ever since I started cosplaying 6 years ago (going on 7...Halloween is my anniversary date for starting to cosplay) and when I go to cons, it's now all about the cosplay and meeting up w/ good friends and hanging out. Panels usually don't interest me anymore, but it depends if my friends are doing a fan panel or something I'm really looking foward to.

I used to also collect alot of fansubs, but now I don't really watch alot of the newer anime titles in Japan ever since I got a DVD player...I usually now wait until a title is released domestically here. The way anime on DVD is promoted here has been great than when it was introduced back in 1998 or so...

God I can still remember the original dubbing of the RoLW OAVs, so horribly bad that its stuck in my mind forever. I quite enjoy the new dubbing of it though and had to get it right when they put it out even though I could only find it at suncoast at the time which means I had to pay far more for it than at somewhere like best buy.

I still havn't seen an extreme array of Anime, but from what I've seen, I agree with Cowboy Beebob being one of the best Dubs out there. Slayers was pretty good (except Xellos' dubbed voice... ::Gag::), and Magic Users Club too. I think it's cute how sometimes they'll say a little bit of Japanese in there (Like when nanaka smacked sae accross the face and Sae was like "nani?"). They should do that more often.

Two words: KARE KANO! (or known as 'His and Her Circumstances' for the engrish speakers)

AKANE! *glomp* Yes, I told you it was better dubbed! I take it you watched the whole DVD with Juno, yes? I laughed my little butt off once I realized why Arima sounded funny! And then when you two practically purred then drolled over that man's voice!^_^' The voices are just so flat in the original!

I'd also vote for Evangelion. It's just spectacular in the dub. Shinji and Asuka's English VA's alone make the dub just sparkle with expressiveness. Not to mention how friendly Tiffany Grant is! And how much effort was put into that to make the English version of good quality!

Speaking of Eva, I just bought "End of Eva" woohoo, took them long enough.

I also have to credit Macross Plus as one of my favorite dubs, and am pretty sure I read somewhere that theres a set comming out sometime with the OAVs and movie edition. Anyone know if theres a specific date on this?

Best dub is Cowboy Bebop. I feel like I should give some kind of shout-out to the Inuyasha dub for not being extremely annoying, as well. Although they have got me calling Kikyo "Kinkyho" . . . it's just the way they said it, that popped into my head . . .

Rosiel

> Well were there any subtitles in the movie?

Japanese ones, yes.
At least I saw it English subtitled in Japanese.

My friend Webster says:

1 : to add (sound effects or new dialogue) to a film or to a radio or television production -- usually used with in
2 : to provide (a motion-picture film) with a new sound track and especially dialogue in a different language
3 : to make a new recording of (sound or videotape already recorded); also : to mix (recorded sound or videotape from different sources) into a single recording

Hence, no, VHD:B is not technically a dub. ^___^

Yeah I never figured that either Ayaka, but when I found out there was only one audio track and no subtitle options, I started to figure it out. Plus the japanese tv and movie ads in the extras section, all featured english audio with japanese subtitles.

No, no, I hadn't heard that the English audio track was the ONLY one. I don't know, not that I don't believe you guys, but maybe I'll email the Answerman at ANN about that, I want to hear some more info . . . of course I've heard of the movie, lol. I agree, Bloodlust is better than the original; it's less muddled, and I think the advances in animation technology let them portray Amano's designs MUCH better. Ah, makes me think of the Amano D cosplayer . . . *sigh* So lovely. Wish I hadn't lost the site.

Ok, I am not sure if it is my computer here at the office or what, but last week I tried to set the record straight about VHD: Bloodlust. So, now I am going for Record Straight v 2.0

When I lived in Tokyo, I went to the permier in March of 2001 for the new VHD movie as it was taglined. (It was at the very large Bunkamura theater where I went to the Tokyo Fantastic Film Festival as well at the International Film Festival! The place is fabulous!) You see, the original VHD that we know was actually a made for TV and has been since dubbed as the "VHD movie" here in the US (well and other english speaking nations!). However, in Japan VHD is known as the OVA of the VHD series because it is loosely based on one of the VHD books.

Ok, back to Bloodlust. Yes, it was originally in English and had Japanese subtitiles. It is based on the third VHD book, and was taglined as THE VHD movie. Here we called it Bloodlust, there it was just Vampire Hunter D. All of the dubbing was done in LA as well as the musical score which was done by an American Composer (Ambrose I think his name was, but it eludes me at the moment). The idea was to show that anime is no longer just a "japanese thing" but is an international phenomenon.

Therefore, I do not think we can consider VHD:Bloodlust a dub, since the only thing Urban Vision did was replace the closing song, Toku Made, with the opening theme. Even to the fact that the credits were already in english....

Just thought I would put my 20 yen in the pot and try and help clear the air!

Oh, by the way for all the Shinesman people....

Most of Bandai's early dub's were pretty good. Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star. (much credit due to the leading voice actor. Who was the English voice actor for Spike and Gene Starwind?) Yeah, Gundam Wing was good. Ranma 1/2 was pretty good (as much as I hate to admit. Die, Viz, die!!!) Tenchi Muyo was... courageous. They tried to use the raw meaning as much as they could. You have to give them credit for that. Although they did *ehm* change some parts.

List of my favorite dubs.

Cowboy Bebop
Kidou Senshi Gundam Dai 08th MS Shotai
X looks like it's going to own
Kidou Budokai God Gundam kicked ass when it got into gear
Shin Kidou Senki Gundam Wing
Outlaw Star
The Tenchi Movie dubs seem to stand over their other efforts too.
Hand Maid May's dub is a guilty pleasure.
Grave of the Fireflies
His and Her Circumstances

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust may not be a dub, but the voice acting is just too good!

I used to think Ranma 1/2 was a great dub, but after seeing the Japanese version...Sorry.

Vandred is pretty good too.
Kidou Senshi Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory gets an honorable metion, when uncensored.

Cowboy Beebop
Elhazard: The Magnificent world.
Neon Genisis Evangellion.
DBZ since Funimation made the voices good (with Scott McNeil and so on)
I really don't watch a lot of dubs, but I noticed while the Tenchi dubs all suck.. there's one exception. The Dub of Tenchi Muyo! in love (first movie) was good. Yes, the monstrosity that is "Cardcaptors" is one of the most horrible things in the universe. Basically sums up most of my reasons why I dislike anime that needs to be "cut" to get put on TV. Blegh. ._.

I'm surprised to see a lot of people liked the GWing dub.. I for one thought it was awful ^^;; But then again, having seen the Japanese fansubs over and over again, nothing could compare to it! Best dubbed...I'd say Goldenboy and Trigun. Hellsing was done quite well, I might add. Worst dubbed has to be Slayers. I still shudder at the very thought of what David Moo has done to my poor Xelloss. **cries**

Dubbing games: Kingdom Hearts was wonderfully done. I was a little hesitant at hearing that the Sixth Sense Kid was doing the voice of Sora, but I think he fits it quite well. Love the game.

usually i don't watch dubbed anime but there are some that qualified as good dubs! and i do reccomend trying it out :D

Your Under Arrest~! the OAV was definatly the best for me that is :D i thought it was really cute and the voices suited them just great

El Hazard- which one? i suppose the whole Wanderers was halrious :D lots of good jokes and really fun to watch in dub- and i must say the voice for Jinnai is the best :D

Digimon- i think the Japanese version is too serious- the first season is really nice and funny to watch

that's all i can think of but i guess it goes to show not all dubs are bad.

most of the stuff Streamline did was awsome.
VERY high quality acting for the most part.
the AKIRA 1989 dub was pretty damn strong.... alot of it was over-acted... BUT overall it's really good. alot of emotion in it.

but the BEST dubbing I've ever heard was the PRESENCE segment of Robot Carnival. They even put the english language track on the japanese DVD release of it! so now it's not even like a dub really.. it's just dual language.

I MUST agree with the Golden Boy dub. Doug Smith is just plain hilarious!

Another good dub is Hellsing. I think Alucard's english voice sounds much more menacing than the Japanese, which fit the character more in my opinion.

Outlaw Star's dub wasn't too bad either, though I kinda liked Aisha's japanese voice better.

Burn Up Excess was a good one to me, also.

GTO is cool, also. It's just more evidence that David Lucus lurks in almost every anime we watch. IF you haven't heard his voice in your favorite anime yet, then just be patient. 9 times out of 10, he'll be in there somewhere...

For those who don't know, he's the voice of Spike in Cowboy Bebop.
