View Full Version : Death Note - L ( Yeah, there's hundreds... )

08-25-2007, 10:44 PM
I'm cosplaying as L from Death Note.
And I know that there are like....a million L cosplayers already, BUT THIS ISN'T FOR A CON.

Actually, me and a buddy of mine want to cosplay L just for the hell of it. XD
For the purpose of confusing people at school the day of Halloween...
For making people at the mall give us weird looks, yes?
That's why we're doing it.

Now, an L cosplay is SUPER EASY.
Big long sleeved white shirt, blue jeans...
That's pretty much it.

But I still have a few questions.

I need to find a good wig.
L's hairstyle can probably be achieved with a wig with a few layers in it, right?
Use gel spray to hold the hair in place....flip strands here and there...It shouldn't be too hard to style it.
But I just need to find a good wig.
Now, I can't cut hair or anything like that...So I'd like to find a nice black wig that has a good style and everything.
Can anyone show me a place that sells good wigs?
Or a place that sells a type of wig that I'm looking for? :[
Or, just give me any tips in finding a wig! :'D
I've heard that human hair wigs are easier to style than synthetic wigs..
But then I've heard that they fade......
I've also heard that synthetic wigs hold their style better...
But I've seen a lot of REALLY BAD LOOKING synthetic wigs...
So can anyone point me in a good direction? :/
Help me out here? I've never bought a wig. XD

I found this, but like I said. I KNOW NOTHING. About wigs. ;3
Please to be helping me? :'D

My second question...
Me and my buddy are both cosplaying L for the hell of it.
Anyways. Even though we're both gonna be L, I thought it'd be cute to chain us together like Light and L... XD
Can anyone show me a place that sells cuffs like that?
They're probably quite easy to find, but I'm too lazy to look.
So any help there? XD

My next quesiton is....about L and the issue of shoes.
I'm all for wearing ratty tennis shoes like L does....
But I'd much rather go barefoot.
That's a problem. There is NO WAY I'm walking around completely barefoot.
I don't mind the fact that people would give me looks..
But it's....the ground is DIRTY.
And I might step on something and hurt myself... XD
So I was wondering, is there anyway to fix this?
I was thinking...
I'm a dancer, and we have to wear these things on the bottom of our feet to protect them, and they help us slide around a bit, yes?
Well, they're pretty much invisible. They go on the bottom of our feet, and connect to our toes (and I've seen some that wrap around your feet like a bandage ) but I've never seen one for the entire foot.
I was thinking I could do something like that?
I was even contemplating on getting the sole of a shoe / a gel sole pad, and bandaging it to my foot, then using make up or something to cover it up a little (like...I forget what it is, but don't some girls who do crosplaying do cosplays where they wear open jackets that reveal bare chests and stuff? I think they use some kind of paint or something to make it look like the color of their skintone? I'd liek to try and use that...).
Do you guys think that'd work? >>
Or do you have any better ideas? :3

And my last and final question.
Makeup. It's not a big deal really, but we'd like to make ourselves look like L as much as possible.
Light foundation, to give us a pale look...
Eyeliner on our lower lids to make it look like we're sleep deprived. XD
But is there anything else we really need to do?
And I already have those (seriously, my aunt called me E.T. when I was first born....photo to prove it? BIG EYES (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/sanara_le/naomiedited.jpg), AND MORE BIG EYES (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/sanara_le/me4.jpg)).
But the other girl who's cosplaying as L with me doesn't have big eyes. Is there any way to make her eyes look bigger and rounder?
I mean, I know you can't make her eyes appear to be HUGE, but I bet there's a way to make her eyes look a little bigger, right? XD
Also.....is there anything we'd really need to do to make us look...more...L-like?
Like, put on makeup to give the effect that we have a slightly different facial shape?
Or should we just go the way we are ( or do I need to show pictures of ourselves to give you an idea on your answer? XD ).

This post is a lot freakin' longer than I originally intended... XD
Thank you in advance to those who help? :3

for the first question, you can get an L wig on ebay pretty cheap (http://search.ebay.com/L-Death-Note-wig_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQ

and for the last, L has no eyebrows. if you can find a good way to do this without shaving them please inform me of it. good luck ^^

Aye, I was going to buy one of those wigs. XD
The wig seems pretty good, and I won't have to cut it any way t oget it in the right style, it seems. :B
Thank you. ^^

And covering your eyebrows is fairly simple. XD
There are a few techniques...
You can use some sort of putty to smooth over your eyebrows in the shape you need, then cover it with foundation to match your skintone. :3
Also, I've seen people use glue / burt's bees lip balm to put over their eyebrows. Then they cover that with liquid latex, and let it dry, then finish it up with foundation.
If you go to the makeup help forum, you'll find topics about eyebrows EVERYWHERE. XD
I'm sure you'l find a technique that works for you. :3
And thank you for informing me about L's eyebrows being.....nonexistant.........

I also overlooked his eyes.
I'm thinking, since L's eyes are....solid black...
I might put contacts in.
But I don't want to put solid black contacts in, or else I'll look like an alien. XD
I might use light gray contacts instead...

KaGhIkX, L does have eyebrows.
Go look at chapter 11.
They're right there.

So, does anyone else who's ever cosplayed as L have any important tips, or do I know everything I pretty much need to know? XD

08-30-2007, 06:59 PM
No, actually, L sometimes has eyebrows, sometime he doesn't.

In the first appearance of L, he has eyebrows. And as the manga goes on, his eyebrows literally disappear. Most people, most accurate people, do L without eyebrows.

You can look through your manga, he has no eyebrows. Sometimes he does though. But either way, give him eyebrows or not. :)

08-30-2007, 07:01 PM
I think it's be best to go without eyebrows, really...
Since my eyebrows are blah. D:
As long as I do a god job at making it seem like my eyebrows aren't there....I should be fine. :'D

09-01-2007, 05:50 PM
Yeah I noticed in the anime/manga his eyebrows come and go :D
I didn't really think about it (for cosplay) till you mentioned it.

I'm also working on the barefoot thing, and was thinking of doing something similar, after talking to my mum who used to be a dancer XD
And I've been looking up black contacts... I was hoping they would also make big eyes =P

As for the cuffs, the chain is rather long, so I dunno about buying them already like that from somewhere... you might just have to buy some and ask someone to extend the chain?

Heres the wig I'm going to buy for cosplaying L:: *click* (http://www.amphigory.com/wigs_fy_razor_sleek.html)

The picture shows blond, but you can get it in black. Its already pre-styled and everything ^^

the only advice I have is regarding the handcuffs. I would buy a pair of regular hand cuffs then go to a hardware store and buy whatever length/thickness of chain you want. Then I'd have someone reassemble the handcuffs with the new chain.

lawl. x3;
my aunt also called me an E.T when I was first born...
= =;
but you know,
my eyes have shrunk over the years, XD
heh. I'm not good at giving advice, but...good luck! :3

And I've been looking up black contacts... I was hoping they would also make big eyes =P

I need to find good perscription contacts. XD
I don't want my eyes to be solid black, though.
Since my eyes are really huge, solid black contacts give me alien-like eyes. XD

09-04-2007, 01:05 AM
well his hair is eay to so unless your hair isn't thatlong

09-04-2007, 07:18 PM
Well, my hair is rather long, and I'm not allowed to dye it black.
Temporary colors are also horrible on me. XD
So I just decided to buy the wig I linked to in the first post. :3
It looks like it's pretty well made.
I just hope it's as good as it looks in real life. XD

just an input, i know i'm kinda late

if you buy ballet slippers, the peach ones, they will look like your real feet from far away and they're comfortable. you could always just wear slippers and take them off for pictures

Well, I already have a pair of ballet slippers.... XD;
But I think I'd be better off with bandaging a gel pad to my feat then painting the bandages to match my skin color.
I don't wanna get my ballet slippers ruined. D:

Third most of the time wen u c people with the handcufs they made them themselves wat u do is by a normal pair and a long chain break the chain on the handcufs and atach it 2 the long chain

and finally the best way 2 look more like L is to hav a sort of hunch thing an put your hands in you pockets
also u can bite your thumb nail he does that alot

Hope this helped ^_^

Ugh I'm at work,so can't post links atm, but for the barefoot thing, I seriously just wear a pair of white flip flops. You kinda have to draw the line between accuracy and real life.

For handcuffs, Party City has a great metal pair back in the costume section, just remove the short chain, then go by Home Depot or Lowe's and get them to cut you a 5 foot chain section.

Also, instead of 2 L's, why not one L and one Beyond Birthday (he's like L's evil twin). Google him, he's awesome.

OK These are the 2 wigs I got (yes I bought 2, I use one for Sebastian sometimes so it's easier to just keep one spiked)

First is from The Five Wits:

Super comfy wig, lots of short layers, but the bangs are longer. This wig comes looking pretty shaggy, but may take a bit of spiking depending on which L look you're going for.Plus it arrived in less than a week. Also this wig can later be used for numerous other cosplays including Sasuke from Naruto or Sebastian from Kuroshitsuji. I <3 this wig so much.

Second is from Fantasy Sheep:

It has longer layers but shorter bangs. Once again it arrives scruffy and just shaking it out a bit will make it scruffier. It took about 10 business days to arrive.

Both wigs are almost identical in quality, they're both plenty thick and easily spike-able. Both may require a bit of trimming of the hair on the bottom back side of the wig. Apparently mullets are still all the rage in wig-land. The Fantasy Sheep wig does have a larger cap,so if you have a bit of a larger head, then this may be the better way to go.

Also using white eyeliner along the water line of the lower lid can help make your eyes appear larger. There's a full tutorial on here if you do a search.

lol that's exactly what I was thinking ^^

As for footwear, could you maybe find a pair of sandals that have clear colored straps on top?
Or the other thing I can think of is wearing dance soles (bear claws, puppy paws.... they got million different names nowadays.)
The only thing with those is that they wouldn't cover the entire bottom of your feet. (plus, I dunno about other dancers, but I really didn't like wearing them XP)

For makeup and making eyes look bigger, you can play around with white eyeliner. :)

L is actually supposed to have eyebrows, but the creators and artists admitted to being lazy about drawing them because if they didn't do it just right, it completely changed his face, so they left them out completely in the anime. If you want to look more iconic, you could use eyebrow wax and all that lovely stuff. I usually don't and go for a more realism look.

Zellers is selling a brand of long-sleeved t-shirts called "Alfred Sung", and are they ever perfect; maybe a bit too thin for some people's tastes. If they stop selling them, look for that brand itself, as it's one of the "they'll make it as long as the brand exists" shirts. They're female style, but don't look feminine at all. The collar is a bit lower like it should be, and is the right body length, too. And usually they're 2 for $20. There's v-neck and boat-neck ones, so careful which you buy, and make sure you get the right size, and look in the mirror when you try them on. I ended up getting one too small, and the next size up was perfect, though didn't realise it at first, so I have to retake a bunch of pictures again.

There's actually a site to order handcuffs like theirs here: http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com/chmox55lochh.html We went with 72 inches because in some shots the length is long, but in some they could be standing side by side and them not touch the ground. We went with more give. Now, these are ACTUAL handcuffs, but at the side, it gives you the option of ordering another key; it comes with two of them, as well as a second locking system so they don't close tighter around your wrist while wearing them. There's different models, but those ones are really good. Caution: they are real metal which = heavy, so you'll want to be careful if people get in between you; if they get pulled, it'll hurt a lot. If you want to have them, but don't have money, refold paperclips so they look like chain links and combine them with some dollar-store metal ones; I've seen some good looking ones like that.

If you want to got bare foot, I'd recommend these: http://www.stickysandals.com/ They come in black and tan as well, so if you search online, you could find them as individuals (someone may sell them on ebay). Since they're made of foam, you could cut them to the shape of your feet, also. I like wearing the half-attempted-to-put-on sneakers; but, yeah, remember not to wear socks with them.

Wig wise, I sewed two together in a way that makes it sit automatically in style, without the need of gels, sprays, and such. It takes a long time, but it is SO worth it! Transportation is a breeze, and you don't have to touch it up ever. Most wigs don't have enough strands for the volume needed, so you end up loosing texture and movement from the styling.

And for contacts, you could go with black-outs, but he actually has a white/grey rim around the black, so go with these: http://exoticlenses.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=57 I can personally vouch for their quality, as I use them. They look great in photos, and it makes it easy to do the stare. My bangs block them slightly, but you can see how it makes your irises pop out: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2936652/ It makes it look like you have bigger eyes than you do because it decreases the size of your pupil a bit, increasing the space between their edge and your eyelids, so when you do the bags under them (as long as you get the shape of them right), it gives that nice stare. (BTW, that is my old wig, my new one is anime black instead of the story art/manga dark brown) And you'd probably be best with using a pure black powder instead of eyeliner, as you can blend the powder and make it look softer, or use a combo of both if having a photos taken, as what looks perfect in real life usually needs to be darkened in photo-editing (it's a pain... but a reality). I definitely agree with the white on the waterline though, and a bit of white powder on the inside of inner water ducts, but on the skin next to them; makes them stick out more.

And L doesn't actually chew his thumb (remember he's a "germaphobic" person and there's a lot of bacteria under your nails); he only slides it over his lips tentatively and such, or just holds it there, and sometimes does it with his index finger, too. Only when he's very stressed does he actually bite. I can remember only 2 or 3 times he does that.
