For halloween this year I want to be Edward Elric from FMA. Seeing as how I am new to cosplay (and not good with making clothes) I decided to buy the clothes portion of my costume from http://www.qqcosplay.com/FMA/fmaedwred02.html . But the next part of the costume is the Automail arm. I found a website that talks about making one, but the tutorial is incomplete http://amethyst-angel.com/armormaking_automail.html . I like the method used for making this automail because it seems pretty durable, and it wouldn't be hard to craft like metal, fiberglass, etc. The only problem, is that seeing as how the tutorial is incomplete (and seeing as how i'm new at this) I don't know exactly how to make the automail. Yes, there are stencils on the website for each part of it, but my main problem is that I don't know how to make the 3D ingravings in it. (For pictures of the completed automail, go here http://www.automail.janchan.com/index.html and click on the "High-Res Cosmode pics" link and download it, Note: it must be extracted using WINRAR) I love this design and I think it would be a great addition to my costume.

So, I would appreciate any help on this project. I would mostly appreciate:
1. Any help in regards of making the automail itself.
2. A tutorial on how to make a durable (but easy made) automail arm.
3. Any information on getting a cheaper clothes portion of the costume.

Thanks in advance,

For the automail thats a hard one. I cosplay Alphonse and his clothes are pretty much the same as Ed's save for minor differences. I was able to make the jacket in about 3 hours from a simple robe pattern. The pants I bought, and the shirt is a shirt I bought at a resale shop and modified. (see my pics).

So the outfit isn't that hard.

I'd say play around with making the automail from the patterns using cardboard until you get the look you want and see how the pieces go together. then use those as your pattern. It's much easier to resize cardboard over and over until you get thing right then it is to use craft foam or metal and screw it up and have to buy the materials all over again.

Thanks for the advice. Now I just got to find some spare cardboard boxes laying around....... lol.

Well you could always use cheap posterboard, to get the sizing right and to make the correct patterns to use, then transfer that to the metal, foam, or what ever else your going to use for the automail.

I have made two full sets of automail, complete with transmuting blades. The first was made out of sheets of craft foam covered with adhesive vinyl; it looks like this (http://www.caninesinaction.com/anime/cosplay/images/fullmetal/lauraed.jpg). It was... okay, but it was not really durable, and started showing signs of wear after a few cons.

The second was made with Wonderflex, part of it bonded to craft foam for thickness, and looks like this: arm (http://www.caninesinaction.com/anime/cosplay/images/fullmetal/automail1.jpg) and hand (http://www.caninesinaction.com/anime/cosplay/images/fullmetal/automail3.jpg). It is extremely durable and much better looking. Plus, the fit and articulation of the fingers is such that the cosplayer can write or type on a computer keyboard without taking it off.

So, in short, I'd recommend Wonderflex. :D You can check out the massive Wonderflex thread in the Props & Accessories forum for details. It is easy to work with -- you can thermoform it by hand, using a heat gun to soften it -- and it is very resilient.

It does take some time, though; you're not going to finish the automail it in one night. You also have to coat the plastic in wood glue or another finisher to smooth it before painting. Leave yourself at least a couple of weeks to work on it.

At the moment I'm working on a massive tutorial for the FMA military uniforms, so I don't have time to write one up for the automail, but you're welcome to PM me if you have any questions. :) Good luck!
