For as long as I can remember, AX, also known as Anime eXpo has been the grandfather of all conventions. To a cosplayer such as me, going there meant that you made it. This is it, no retreat, no return. This is where you show off your best. This is where you prove yourself at the biggest Japanese Animation convention in America. Boy was I so fucking wrong. Overall the con was great, but the cosplay itself was horrible.

Saturday:

Okay, I got there around 10:30AM. I registered and looked for Mickey so we could go up to the room. But he didn’t get there until 12PM. In the meantime, I ran into members of my anime club- NYO! Cosplay. Thanks Liam, for storing my stuff while I changed into my Ranma Saotome costume. And I went around taking pictures and collecting e-mail addresses. But dammit, I lost my stack of e-mail addys I collected! I was able to recover a few of them, which is a good thing.
During this day I ran into Oshii. And we were off in a party to find Mick. And we did find him! But we weren’t able to check into a room until 3PM. So we roamed around and took pictures. We went back early for a room check, but the damn hotel lost my luggage! During this I met Amy, Andre, and Jez! Hi guys! I was able to get my luggage back later and send it to the room.
At 3, I met my troupe and signed in for the cosplay contest. I went back and my luggage didn’t show up. Eventually it did around 5:30. I found my bag open and $100 missing! Goddammit!!!! >.< I drowned my sorrows at karaoke. Oh BTW, I met Anne (Ayaka) on the way. Hi! She’s just as adorable as Lain, and sexy as Faye Valentine! :) At the karaoke I met my boy Linwood. I got his stuff into the room, cuz I accidentally demagnetized the room key. During the karaoke, some idiot got up on stage and said “Women are monsters!” You tool! He tried to sing a j-pop song in a rock style. Oh well.
Later on, I ran into my club and we went out to eat. I also went to the InuYasha premiere at Planet Hollywood! Nothing like free beer and wings! I also met this cute cosplayer who remembered me from Shoujocon. When I got back to the room, we we’re up till 4 AM telling stories about life and other crazy shit we did.

Sunday:

Okay, this is it… I went dressed as Ranma again because my Protoman costume wasn’t ready. I was awoken at 7AM for a fitting, which I didn’t mind at all. I went out and had coffee and a donut. I brought Jez one because he was up all night. I also had a costuming panel with Widya Santoso of the COSP ML and with another girl. I was able to share and express my views of cosplay with others. If you don’t know by know, I’m a black cosplayer and I do stand out and try my best.
After that, I went around and collected my cosplayers to check in. In doing so I ran into others from my club (hi Carmen, Alicia!), as well as Darcy and Scott (lucky guy). Later on that day, I met 2 Spanish Ranma 1/2 cosplayers! I got my picture with them and went into about 2 or 3 cosplay rehearsals because they canceled the dress rehearsal. Damn bastards! I went into the Dealers Room and it was full of great stuff!
Bad news… The sewing machine broke. No Protoman, no j-rock costume. But it’s okay. Jez worked very on the costumes and I’m happy about that. I walked around with the boots on and I got more pictures done. I was called Proto-Ranma, Mega-Ranma, and all other kinds of funny names. Hey, I liked it! :)
At 6:15, I went to the cosplay with my troupe and got ready. And then, don’t you know people had the fucking nerve to complain and they changed the rules! Everything was being ran ass backwards! I mean I have been cosplaying for four years! It was almost as bad as BAAF! I was thinking, “Why did I even bother…” We did our cosplay skit and our timing was thrown off real bad! Another NYO! Cosplay group lost a minute off of theirs! And they should’ve won! All in all, NYO! got spanked by a bunch of clow cards. Heh. I am happy that Aeris and Anne won tho! Congrats ladies!
Later on, I tagged along with Anne and her peeps for dinner. Then I went to karaoke with them. I went back to my room and chilled out. I went back downstairs in my Protoman boots and got props from the Cosplay.com crew. I hung out there went back up to the room and went to sleep.

Monday:

Not much to say. I got up, dressed as Ranma, walked around and went home. We all checked out and went our separate ways.

My thoughts:

Personally, I felt that the con was too spread out… Four floors?! I must thank BAAF for being total assholes to AXNY. They won’t be back until 2004, and that’s a maybe. They’re also getting too big for themselves too. AX Tokyo?! Oh come on, the hell are you guys smoking! The cosplay was ran by a bunch dysfunctional people that got off the yellow short bus. I was expecting a bigger turnout, but then again this was on four floors and you couldn’t tell. And for the next 2 years, we have to deal with BAAF. I felt that the deck was stacked against us in cosplay, but we we’re in a big cosplay, nothing local. I’m hoping that Anime Next 2002 will be much better.

Wow, I never felt more looked for in my life!!! LOL. As you can see, I just registered for the site!!! I liked AXNY, got a bunch of cool stuff...though I admit my favorite part was doing 5 jumping jax dressed as Boogiepop Phantom yelling "I'm a Whore'. I did this as a dare for an artist in artsts alley...it was hysterical.

It's got a pretty good anime stint at I-CON go to iconsf.org...there's not much info up there now as the con isn't until April though...but there's some highlights to it...we always have dubbing workshops, cell painting workshops and costuming panels (rosiel was on the last one ^_^) and lots of other forums, the anime industry panel is one of my fave's...yoshi from viz and a bunch of the cpm guys along with michael simtemiklass were on it last year...the main dubbing workshop always gets a lot of voice actors / actress guests. Hmm...I could go on and on...

Ranma Saotome

Perhaps I should run a panel there...

Hello everyone,

Well, first of all, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the AXNY Masquerade. We had some really wonderful performances, and you all did a great job.

I would like to apologize for two things:

First of all, for our VTech staff. They were -very- new. In other words, they had never done a Masquerade before in their lives. We have a much more advanced Vtech staff at the AX (California) Masquerades. So, despite the fact that we gave them the CD & such, they did make mistakes in cues.

Secondly, I'd like to apologize for that woman who was -screaming- at the cosplayers at the meeting. To this day I have no idea what the name of that woman is, nor is she one of my staffers. She wasn't even a volunteer nor was she any kind of Anime Expo New York staff. When it was brought to my attention that she was screaming and people and going around me I made sure that she was calmed down by one of my staffers. I truly apologize that any of you had to put up with her and, as I said, I don't even know who she is. She came up to me a few times at the con, but I never caught her name, and I have no idea why she tried to take over the cosplayers.

Things that I won't apologize for are two of the issues that you mentioned in this thread: the timing of skits and the microphones on the stage.

This was clearly a situtation where the contestants hadn't read the Masquerade Rules http://www.axny.org/masq_rules.html

First of all, if your skit was way over 2 minutes we cut it to two minutes. Rule 3 under the Participation Rules states:
"Your skit and music must be 2 minutes exactly, or under. We do allow a few extra seconds for the contestants to get on and off the stage. Please note there are no exceptions to the 2 minute rule. If your music and prerecorded routine is longer than 2 minutes 5 seconds, etc., we will trim to 2 minutes. The Masquerade would go on forever if we gave everyone more time, so please be sure to follow this rule. If the skit goes beyond the 2-minute mark, lights and music will be turned off and contestants removed from the stage. "

Secondly, there were not supposed to be Microphones on the stage. One of the major reasons we had so many Vtech screw ups was because a few people who hadn't read the rules demanded that we have microphones on the stage which caused delays and general confusion. That was a last-minute inclusion and it really screwed up how we were doing Vtech.

Rule 2 on Presentation requirements clearly states:
"All music and/or speech must be prerecorded, there will be no microphone on stage (no exceptions)."

These are the exact same rules we use for Anime Expo http://www.anime-expo.org/masq_rules.html and the same rules we have been using since Anime Expo 1999. The reason why Anime Expo California ran smoothly is due to the fact that our cosplayers at AX California followed these rules to the letter and pre-recorded their music and speech and made sure that all skits were under two minutes.

We worked very hard to bring you a Masquerade, and this one had 53 entries (the same as at Anime Expo 2002) plus it was filmed by CNN, -and- we gave out some amazing prizes. We started early (7:59 pm!) and we ended early (by 10:30 pm). Every single person under the age of 13 in the Masquerade received a subscription to Play magazine. And we did this with a staff of West Coast people who had to come all the way out to NY and work our butts off to make the event possible.

Not to mention that every cosplayer actually got to sit in the audience and see the entire Masquerade (except perhaps a couple of skits before and after your own) and you were not stuck in some back room or hallway. We also made sure water was available, and tried to keep everyone comfortable.

Before you complain about a Masquerade, take into account the positive aspects as well as all the work that the staffers went through to make the event even possible for you. It's my understanding that this is the first time the New York has -ever- had this type of event. Considering that there were only 2 major Vtech issues with skits, that's pretty darn good. We were extremely happy that we only had 1 technical issue at AX2002. Remember, the event is about having -fun-. You got to go on stage, you got to show off your costume, you made the audience smile, or laugh, or clap. Not everyone can win a prize, but you can take with you the lessons from this Masquerade and create a costume that can win next time if that's what you really want to do.

I'd like to give a shout out to my staffers, the other AXNY staffers, all the cosplayers, the Masquerade winners, and to the judges. Everyone did a fantastic job.

I have to admit that AXNY didn't turn out that I thought it would -- then again, I was still in my stage of OTAKON-ness. I guess that I wasn't thinking straight when I was comparing Otakon and AXNY.

AXNY made its debut and to me, that was pretty good. Overall, it was good. There weren't as many cosplayers as there were at Otakon but then, people tried. I think the convention could've been better if there were more people who actually participated in the cosplaying. Then again, I didn't even get to see most of the cosplayers -- 4 floors was really too much. There was too much space between everyone that people didn't really get to enjoy the full potential of the anime convention.

Did I mention that the video rooms were insanely cold -- or is it just me? Anyway, I have one more thing to complain about...before I stop. THE LINES! MAKE IT STOP! EVERYTHING -- I MEAN, EVERYTHING -- there was always a line! Sure it was 4 floors but damn! The lines were insanely long, half the people that were at the half end of the masquerade hall didn't even get to see the cosplayer's faces. All we saw was a few people in pretty stuff and that's it. Okay...I'm done. Thank you for listening to my ramblings.

AngelJibrille

Unfortunately, none of the things you just mentioned can I fix ^_^;; Those were not my departments. I suggest that you post about lines & such over in the AXNY board in the Gripes section, that way the people in charge of that stuff could take care of it. The URL is: http://forums.axny.org/

As for the cosplayers, we were actively going out and trying to recruit people, we were very very lucky to get the 53 groups we had. We were going to be happy if we only had 35 groups ^_^;; It's because a lot of the cosplayers told us they couldn't stay past 6:00 pm, etc., for the Masquerade. If we were to do this again, I wonder if it might be better to have a daytime Masquerade?

There's no way you can stop the lines. People line up early so they can get in first, so the lines form ^_^;

Me? I wait elsewhere until the event is starting. I don't care about sitting in the back. But I hate waiting in line.

Marisa-san - That woman in the black dress WASN'T staff?! oO;;; No, I guess I'm confused, you must mean someone else . . . but she's the only person I remember yelling.

AngelJibrille
09-05-2002, 05:07 PM
Yes! That's who I'm talking about. She showed up at the Masquerade desk a few times (and I was -really- busy trying to finish the Masquerade script at the time, so I really didn't talk to her) and then she showed up at the Masquerade. At first she was very helpful, but then she started screaming at people at the meeting (screaming! I hope everyone noticed that I never scream at anyone O_o ! I was horrified.) Sometimes she was even screaming over me when I was talking on the microphone. Plus I told her to let everyone in for the meeting, but she was having you guys all come in, in order? I was totally baffled, which was why I finally came out and told everyone to just come in. I was irked that the meeting started late because as most of you can tell I'm a nutcase about starting things on time ^_^;;

It really upset me and I have -no idea- who she is. She wasn't one of my staffers at all and I found out later that she wasn't even a volunteer (as I had assumed) nor was she any kind of Anime Expo or BAAF staff in any way, shape, or form. After my husband (Casey, he was the guy with the light brown hair & glasses that helped you all backstage) told her to quit it, she apparently disappeared. I never saw her again for the duration of the Masquerade nor the convention. I just want to make sure that everyone knows that her methods (especially the screaming at people when there was a microphone 2 feet away!) completely contradicted the way I run a Masquerade (ask any contestant from AX2000 or AX2002) and I want to apologize that we didn't get her to quiet down earlier. All I know is that I've received several complaints about "the screaming lady" and apparently she was even giving out false information that contradicted the Masquerade rules and procedures.

If anyone knows this person or can give me information on what the heck was going on I would appreciate it. Some Masquerade contestants have even written me to tell me that she told them that SHE was in charge of the Masquerade. O_o ! I want to make sure this situation doesn't happen again. My e-mail is costume@anime-expo.org

Take care and, again, my apologies for her actions.

Hey people. I had second doubts about going to AXNY. It would be my first time to an anime convention and I wasn't expecting much out of it. Since this might be the first and last time Anime Expo will be held in NY, I thought I'd check it out. I heard about the Masquerade on Sunday, so I registered for Sunday's session. WOW, never thought people would put so much time and effort making costumes like that. I was impressed; I couldn't stop taking pictures. I also want to point out that many of the female cosplayers were cute. Thanks for making an hour train ride, $25 admission fee, and 12 hour wait, worth it.

Marisa - Holy freakin' . . . wow. Though I wouldn't really have complained about her anyway, she was nice to me, lol. I'd definitely recognize her if I saw her again, but didn't get a name either, unfortunately. I don't actually remember seeing a badge on her at all, for that matter. oO;;; How amazingly surreal. Anyway, I still think that the masq went well, from my POV . . .

Blah.... I just want to ramble a bit. AXNY was my second convention, and it was a LOT of fun. ^^ Though the amout of cosplayers was a bit dissapointing [there was no Yuki or Van to glomp-tackle when I was in my Shuichi and Merle costumes ;.;] but the quality of the costumes most definately made up for the shortage. ^^

The Masquarade.... oh dear. I felt that many aspects weren't as... spiffed up as they should have been, and the scary screaming lady didn't help. On the issue of miscrophones, I was VERY disturbed- when my friend and I went to sign up as a group, we were NOT given any information on the recording. Many of those around me were in the same dillema as myself. I AM partially at fault for not completely absorbing the rules, but I think it should have been brought to my attention again when we signed up. He asked for my music, but said nothing about the pre-recording; it threw me off. But Marisa, I think you did a wonderful job of trying to control the roudy cosplayers and organizing all of that. Thank you very much. ^^

But all in all, the con was a lot of fun, though I think they should re-plan a few things if there is ever another AXNY. 4 floors? methinks not. Also, they could have improved the line control of the dealer room... it was so out of control. I was in PAIN because I was so cramped- people were everywhere! I could have drowned in bodies!! It caused a lot of trouble around the booths themselves- I got knocked into some merchandice and yelled at by the vendor.

Despite the many little troubles, I hope you all had as much fun as I did. ^^

Oshi

Y'know... even if that 'screaming lady' wasn't staff... I think she did a good job controlling and organizing the cosplayers... *shrug*
But that's just me. I'm used to people yelling and screaming to get people to do stuff... *coughmyparentscough*

AngelJibrille
09-06-2002, 02:07 PM
I just think it could have been done without the screaming O_o. But that really wasn't as bad as some people telling me that she said she was the Masquerade Coordinator and had given them conflicting information. That meant I had to spend time undoing what had been done O_o. *sigh* Oh well, I have a few months off to relax before AX2003 stuff starts stressing me out again :)

take care,
misa

Yes, I'm the jerk who said "Women are monsters" at the karaoke contest; and looking back, it obviously wasn't the right line to quote from Vandread (since that was the series the song I did was from). If I had taken more time to think about it, I probably would have quoted something a little nicer, such as "Boy meets girl" (the title of the first episode). And as far as being refered to as a kid, I take a little bit of offense myself. I'm 25!

Just wanted to set the record straight,

So you're the one who called my cell phone last night. ^^; Dood, in the audience, the women wanted to hang you by your manhood... LITERALLY! :D

Obviously, it was bad choice of a quote. You see, it's the first line in the first episode of Vandread as part of a piece of propaganda reflecting the war between the men of Tarak and the women of Mejale.
But judging by the response I got, not many people in the audience had seen the series. Hopefully, I can redeem myself at Anime Boston. I've got a performance planned for friday's karaoke that got a huge ovation at otakon.

Later,

Steve "Carrot" Gilder

P.S. to Ranma: When I called you last night, there were some other things I wanted to discuss with you.

AX Tokyo? My only fear is that the people running that show is going to screw up royaly in front of the Japanese and make us Americans look like jack asses. To the folks who's going to run AX Tokyo, remember you'll be representing us back in the states. Don't make us look bad!:skidude2:

Good enough for me sailor-moon. Engrish I'd hate to be a doomsayer but... AX Tokyo = dead in the water. That's like recycling an anime series, dubbing it and selling it back to Japan. Just like what Saban did with MMPR when it first came out.

LionBoogy
12-26-2002, 03:37 AM
We've been working on AX Tokyo for the past 3 years with fellow Japanese Guests of Honor. In fact, THEY are the ones who wanted it done there and wanted us Americans to show them how we do things differently, simply because it's different. This has been openly discussed at some panels: NDK, AXNY, AX2001-2002. The bulk of the staff and organizers are mostly Japanese and will be working alongside many of the same fine folks who staff Otakon, Anime Expo, NDK, Anime Boston, Worldcon, Comiket, and others. Many of us have been staffing all kinds of cons for over 10 years.

I'm sorry if we don't meet your expectations. I guess those of us who have more worldly initiatives are not insane enough.

On a further note...

"...I'd hate to be a doomsayer but... AX Tokyo = dead in the water. That's like recycling an anime series, dubbing it and selling it back to Japan."

Apart from regular staff, I'll take that quote as a personal attack.

Everyone, let's play PITY RANMA, VERNACULARIST EXTRODANAIRE.
I dunno, maybe if you were a less of an antagonist, the NYO ml would still have its core members.
Seriously, learn to control yourself.

Ranma Saotome
12-27-2002, 12:19 AM
So you're bringing this here. Sure, why don't we bring all of my personal business to this board. I never asked for any pity you toad. I am who I am and if you don't like it, you know what you can do. And if the core members of NYO acxted like they had some intelligence, then it would not have fallen apart.

<-- Done

Pool Cue Ronin
12-27-2002, 12:44 AM
Um, it was YOU who closed the mailing list because you were acting like a damn cry-baby. Putting the blame on the other members for something YOU started is childish, to say the least.

Ranma Saotome
12-27-2002, 01:54 AM
Actually no. I closed it because we had all those chaotic fights and no one was doing a goddamn thing about it. All I di dwas try to restore peace. and as usual, instead of letting me rest, I had to come in and settle things. Next time don't be so fucking stupid and get your facts straight.

Ranma Saotome
12-27-2002, 01:54 AM
Oh BTW... Remember, this ain't F.Net, so act like you have some kind of home training.

That said, this is the last I will discuss NYO outside of the ML and messageboard. If you continue on, don't expect me to rebuttle any of your asinine ramblings.

Pool Cue Ronin
12-27-2002, 01:05 PM
I don't see how being a member of F.Net makes anything different in your case.
Fine, I'll just PM the rest to you then.

Looks like Ranma and I have something in common;)

as for LionBoggy's "I'm sorry if we don't meet your expectations. "

I'm assuming that statement is directed towards me although it was not explicitly stated. I wanna get something straight. I never said anything about anybody not meeting my expectations. I just said I'm afraid the sh!t is going to hit the fan and we're all going look bad. Now don't get me wrong, I don't want AX Tokyo to go bad....I'm just saying I got some bad vibes that's all.

The logistics of running a con in the states is hard enough but add to the fact that you're going to pull something off in a foreign country where not even half of your staffers are going to be speaking the same language wow @_@ That's a job I'll pass up on. But if you think you guys have what it takes to do it then all i've got to say is you got bigger balls then I do. And yah good luck.

Ranma Saotome
12-29-2002, 01:34 AM
What engrish said is basically what I said, but more to the point. I won't go into what bothered me with AXNY, cuz that will start more problems.

Pool Cue Ronin
12-29-2002, 01:37 AM
I don't think they're charging head first into foreign territory without knowing the language, tho.
