View Full Version : When you dye your hair...

I chemically relax my hair (i.e. straighten it) at a salon about once or twice a year. It's been many months since last I did so, but my hair is still somewhat dry and in need of a trim.
To match my character cosplay for AX this July, I plan to dye my hair a few shades lighter than my dark brown hair using that gentle stuff that washes out in 6-12 shampoos. And the day before AX, I plan to straighten my hair. I am worried that doing this will damage my hair, but then again it's the stuff that washes out in 6-12 shampoos...What do you guys think?

To straighten I'd go with ironing to minimize damage.

generally those dyes that wash out in 6 to 12 shampoos really don't lighten hair all that much. If you're trying to go blonde or a really light brown you'd probably have to bleach it blonde. Use a toner to help get it to a shade you're happy with. Or if you just want a lighter brown than you have now, maybe bleach it blonde then dye it whatever shade brown you want. As for relaxing hair, you might want to talk to the people who have relaxed your hair in the past they might be able to recommend what you can do and how soon you can do it.

Yeah bleach it.. .I just went through a dye earlier tonight outta curio and the result.. well.. it wasn't that great, to say the least.
My dark brown hair is now mid-reddish brown.

Unless you hair is a really dark brown almost black you should be fine using a temporary die, but you will have to go about 4 or 5 shades lighter than what you want. My best friend does it all the time for stuff, however she has nearly black hair and we have to go in the blonde range just to make it a medium brown color.
Just a word to the wise, do not have your hair straightened after you dye it with temporary die! Straighten first then wait a week or so and then dye. This will minimize the damage that will be done to your hair. I did it the other way around before and that is a bad, bad thing to do!
