Oh...hello. This is a thread for organizing all those interested in the proposed plan to invade House on the Rock in Springgreen (?) Wisconsin at some future date for a mass cosplay photoshoot. (Just breaking it off the picnic thread, which was a totally different idea ^_-)

What's "the Rock"? I keep on hearing about it, and I don't know what the hell it is......

I just said what it was, silly. I guess you don't read Neil Gaiman, huh?
Here's the official website:
http://houseontherock.com/

It's basically everything in the world in one place. A full-size giant squid attacking a whale. The horseman of the Apocalypse. Guns, armor, caskets, animated minatures, models of all kinds, artcars, artglass, the largest carousel in the world, creepy industrial sculptures and catwalks, thousands of dead animals, hundreds of self-playing instruments. I'm probably missing like half of it cuz your brain starts overloading mid-way through. The displays in the restrooms alone are worth sneaking in to the other gender's. Why, they even have the old Gauntlet arcades in one of their cafeterias. And that's just all the stuff that got added later. The actual House is the gorgeously twisting, bizarre, Asian-inspired structure that was built by hand by this one crazy guy.

oh wow I went there once before...we got pulled over for speeding on the way, lol. It's a really creepy place...in a cool way, but creepy. I suppose a photoshoot would work, although Chicago would be so much better for me... >.o

a visit to HOTR would be cool though...reliving my scared-to-death-of-the-place childhood. XD

Yeah, we all still wanna do at least one regular, *free* weekend picnic/photoshoot in the Chicago area sometime this summer....that's why I wanted to separate the two ideas...because the HotR is going to require much more planning. With getting group rates, perhaps special photo clearance, maybe even setting up at their inn overnight...hehe, it's going to turn into a mini-con at this rate.

& yeah, Troppy, that's totally it, though...it is creepy, in a cool way. ^_- But the photo op possibilites are endless. (I totally imagine seeing Yuna summoning that sea creature XD that'd rock) Hopefully we can figure out a time when it isn't too crowded with normal tourists in the way.

Dude, I would soooo drive out there for that.

How many hours is it from Chicago?

About 3.5 hours

DAMN!.... I wish I could go to HOTR. But, I HAVE NO CAR! And even if I do have a car, I don't like driving alone to Wisconsin....

Heheh, wha, is Wisconsin scary? ^_^ well actually...it is O_O

Don't despair...we can probably organize car pools...or a bus...or something. I don't drive either, you know. Anyway, there's no rush on this, so we can really plan this to allow as many people to come as possible.

Well Kazecon is sometime in October i think, in Chicago, would we wanna somehow do it in tandem with that or after or before?

Yui

Well lemme quote myself so nobody misses it. The upcoming official Chicago area cons are:
Kazecon = October 10-12
Reactor = October 24-26

The Chicago cosplay picnic is likely to be this summer (hopefully the weekend after Otakon, that's my vote ^_-) but, again, I'm not sure how much planning HotR's gonna take, so it probably wouldn't be before that weekend anyway. And it shouldn't probably be connected with Reactor since Halloween is already mucking up that time frame.

But...having it aligned somehow with Kazecon sounds like a very interesting idea. We will probably get more out-of-the-area cosplayers to take an extra day or two maybe after the con weekend that way than we could hope for having the two events separate. Actually, if someone would like to present the proposal to the Kazecon people, they may be able to help connect the two somehow (it could only help promote their first-year con and distinguish it from all the other cons out there.)

Okay, I'm just making some notes to think about when contacting the HotR people...it's not necessarily coherant, I just don't want to forget anything.

We have to stress that the photoshoot is entirely not-for-profit. and also let them know that while we're ameteurs, we will behave in a mature and professional way and respect all of their displays and any rules they set out for us. I think it might also help explain our position if we directed them to the photo exhibitions here on the site (particularily the ones not connected with a con.) Also, if we go on a weekday (which it would be if it were to follow Kaze directly), especially in the off-season, they might be more willing to accomodate us as we would be filling their hotels and such.

Yeah, that's all I can think of for now. I just didn't want them to misunderstand/get freaked out about us all of a sudden showing up.

Right, might wanan mention we're part of a local anime club or something, or cosplay.com, so we dont sound like a bunch of kids :p

I would definitely love to come to this. After Kaze con is a good idea in my opinion. I'm in the north suburbs, and (although I cringe to admit it) I have a minivan, so I can help with carpool if anyone needs it.

You know what, the funny thing is my memories of House on the Rock are really cheezy, like I remember it being a gift shop-centered funhouse type place, with walkways...... it's funny how badly twisted your memory can get after 20 some years. :\

I'd love to go to house on the rock, but I don't know what the grounds are like. Are they receptive to having a bunch of people in unwieldly costumes roaming in or around their property? Whoever wants to organize this, give them a call and find out what their policies are, and if it's feasible, I'd love to go.

Ahaha I didn't see this thread at first. o_O It has been a loooooooooong day. >< So Yui, you wanna be "in charge" of the HotR outing? (I'll lend a hand of course. ^^)

You know, I think you're memory is serving you pretty well. ^_-
Yeah, it's really a ridiculously touristy funhouse place, with walkways...but I mean, it's like the holy land as far as tourist attractions go.
And yes, let's all be agreed as to how we're presenting our request before storming their info line. Because we are a weird crowd, even for them, and I just don't want them to reject us due to misunderstanding.

"in charge" huh? I think I've dug my own grave on this one. ^_-*
Um, well unless there's anyone else who wants to rise to the occasion, I guess I could. I'm not a very good leader tho. X_x

I don't see anyone volunteering, Yui . . . lol. Err, I'll be your event co-chair or something, heheh. I've never been to the place though, I admit, just seen lots of pics. Always thought about heading up but haven't had a chance to . . .

Okay, for those who haven't been there before, it's not like a museum where you just quickly run off to the section you want. It's like you're led through a particular course in orer (you can technically backtrack, but there's basically only one real path...I think it goes on seriously for 2-3 miles or something, up and down ramps all over the place)...um, do you guys think we should try to make this officially a 2-day deal? Like maybe the first day wear an easier to move costume to scout out what you really want to do the second time through? Tho I'm thinking it'd probably be advisable to spend at least one night at one of their hotels regardless of whether we actually hit the House the second day or not.

Troppy

no offense but I'm really not huge on a 2-day endeavor...especially if we're doing this in October. With all the money I'll be spending on Kazecon and AnimeReactor, I'd have to book a hotel up there and just couldn't afford it; and the distance makes commuting basically a serious SERIOUS chore. If it can be done in one day, I'd be much more content...

Yeah, I haven't overlooked the costs either. (I'm actually being tricked into considering AX Tokyo in January...not sure how this is going to pan out, but I'm all of a sudden a little more wary of fundage as well.)
...But it is quite a trip. At about 4 hours one-way for me, I know I can't get around at least spending one night there before turning back around. The second day would kinda be just an optional thing, for anyone who felt they still needed it. I kinda was thinking one actual day there taking pictures would be sufficient, but I didn't want anyone to feel rushed or overwhelmed.
Additionally, is anyone feeling that October this year is getting too over-booked? I did like the idea of the Kazecon tie-in, but I don't want to bring the idea up to the Kaze people before we were a little more definite.

Ayaka

Yeah . . . err. *is sleepy* I think October is getting a bit intense. I'm not sure about my opinion on one day versus staying overnight . . . certainly it would kinda suck to make the trip up there and back in the same day, though I have the cost concern as well . . .

Well, let's see what the Rock season schedule is like. I'm now thinking this might be better to connect with ACen next year (due to its established reputation and attendance) or have when there isn't any other con going down at all. I think I'd rather have a few picnics/photoshoots or just fun lil meetings first before we take on this big project. So let's get some experience planning activities before we drive everyone off to their financial doom...
