Hi again guys :)

As maybe you've heard in my other thread, I am going to be going to the Final Fantasy Ball this year, and my boyfriend is going as well, as Squall. He's planning on wearing it to AFO this year as well (if we all get into that Final Fantasy group we've been talking about) :) so he'd have some use for the gunblade (as I assume they're not really gonna let you bring that big honkin' thing into the ball, lol...) He was wondering if anyone could give him any tips on either how to make one, what materials you used, reference pics., etc.... Thanks a lot! He really needs your help ^.^

You should talk to Aaron....the creator of the Final Fantasy Ball at AWA8. He was Squall at the first FF ball. He also made MY gunblade that I bought from him (VERY expensive though....you dont even wanna know how much it cost me. ^^;; ). I kinda had to repaint it though (had a small accident with some black paint while touching up a small area on the handle ^^;; )

I went as Squall to Sakuracon 2003 and got soo many compliments on the gunblade. ^_^
Not to mention all the people that wanted to touch it. XD!!

i made mine out of insulation foam... i kinda cheated and made the pattern by enlarging the picture of the gunblade in the little book that comes with the game... XP

make sure you draw all the details on both sides of the foam when you get the basic shape cut out, otherwise you're sure to lose them... also put the chain in before you start painting and everything....

my BIGGEST mistake was trying to use spraypaint... arg, spraypaint melts foam ;_; so i like to call mine 'battle damaged' ._.;;

Hm, I'm still debating for the sword and gunblade I'm working on whether to go with wood or foam. I've gone online and found a few really good pictures of the gunblade and then I used the one from the game booklet when I'm sketching the gun to make sure I know all its complexities. If you can't afford one commissioned, I'd say go with wood or foam.

Yeah, he was thinking of using foam, but I just wouldn't know how to paint it..h cuz I know we couldn't use spray paint. And I don't know if wood would be too heavy. Thanks for the advice :) Squall your gunblade looks absolutely awesome!!! (How much did it cost you, if you don't mind saying, lol...) Well, talk to you all soon ^.^

If you really wanna know....<_<.....>_>.....$500 ^^;;;. Now you see how bad I wanted it. I really wanted (and still want) the actual metal official gunblade replica (http://members.aol.com/criticonx/gunbladereplica.jpg). But even if I managed to find one, it would probly cost thousands. So this was the next best thing. After I got it, it inspired me to make the costume when I found out about Sakuracon in Seattle. ^_^

Mine is made of wood (pine). It's not really heavy at all.

my friends hav been making gunblades galore at school during shop class LOL!^_^
there are several progress-photos here:
http://sma.adaelis.com/forum/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=fstudioofmasqueradeartsfrm13&Number=10133&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=4

they're eventually going to put in a working trigger/revolving-part^_^

ive never made any weaponry out of wood myself, as i dont hav the tools to cut it with, but ive used foam on several occassions^_^
its not Squall's, but its the same concept really...i made my bf's Seifer gunblade out of a toygun and foam

as for painting foam, it was mentioned before, DONT use anything oil based on it, u could however get the acrylic-spraypaint which isnt oil/gasoline based.
If u cant get that, then u can just paint it with acrylics, if you use a mini-roller, it should come out smooth-looking^_^

Wow! Thanks for the advice! Those ones that your classmates are making look super-awesome! That mustv'e taken them a long time! That is a really good idea to use a toy gun and go from there ^.^ How did you attatch the gun to the foam though? Thanks again, and talk to you all soon!

i used construction adhesive^_^
i used that stuff in shop class a couple years ago, and according to my teacher, its the most ideal for insulationfoam adhesion^_^
when it dries, that stuff is like a rock :O well we did make rockets and boats with it, LOL and they didnt blow up in our faces^0^

That Gunblade is looking nice. ^__^
From looking at the handle, it looks like they're going more by the the official replica (see pic I posted above) than the game version.

The only thing I dont really like is that it's in two pieces. I'd be worried about it breaking. Mine is one solid piece (except for the revolver magazine, trigger, hammer, etc... of course).

Anyway, it still looks really great! ^__^

Squall - yours is an amazing piece of work. It's just as impressive up close as it is in the photos ^_^

I was thinking about the design on the side of the gunblade. Does anyone have it so it's printable? I'm not very good at drawing or painting....is it imperative that I have the chain and the drawings on the side??

EDIT:

What about the rest of it? Is it important that the pieces are working?

Wow. I have no talent when it comes to stuff like that, so if I could get one of those wooden ones.... I just went as Squall for Halloween and everybody's jaw dropped when they saw me. They said I did everything perfect, except no Gunblade. Soooooo I need one. Then I will be at peace.

I do have a mini-tutorial on my website for a gunblade, with measurements, etc. It's still under construction, but it should be good for a start!
