View Full Version : regarding a chicago area cosplay group

Okay I was having trouble keeping track of multiple subjects in the same thread . . . ^^;;; So humor me, how about we talk about starting a group, putting up a website, here?

I agree with you, Yui, it would be silly to recreate what's going on at cosplay.com already. There is a section for local cosplay groups to have their own forum, and I think we should request one, and also talk with Admin about how he'd like to do things in terms of how we'd be affiliated with cosplay.com. I think we should give him at least a day or two to recover from con-going though!

Kylash, you do good stuff, if you want to do the site, I for one would be happy with that. ^^ And Yui, if there are ever any space issues I have room on my space too.

Uh, guess we need a name, huh? Any suggestions? :3

I wouldn't mind doing a local cosplay club, but not a cosplay group. There's too much diversity and too much variation of skill levels for us to have like a working costumers group.

But a cosplay club would be very very keen. Maybe we could get together every week or something.

Ayaka

I never thought of it as being something that we'd try to cosplay the same series, do skits, that sort of thing; nothing that formal. Just something that could be a touchstone for people in the area, so that if they're forming groups maybe they could find other interested parties, when they need support they can get some, do shopping trips so when you're going "a or b" you have someone to ask. But mostly so that we just have a chance to be around other cosplayers outside of the chaos of cons. (I love cons, of course, but it seems like everyone's running around too much to be social as much as we'd like.)

I'm a bit sleepy, so I'm not gonna be super-coherent tonight (lost my keys tonight, I'm still kinda traumatized ><). But I was thinking of even using something like the word "affiliation" in the name. I definitely want to try to keep this clear of the ugliness that can go on; I think keeping it reasonably informal is the best way to try to do that.

kylash327
05-26-2003, 12:22 AM
Well I used to be part of a local Star Wars group thingie and they used their site to post updates on gatherings and a list of members with links to their sites and such, basically a databse for people to find others around here and find out where we are meeting, also a way for us to keep organized, just a small simple page that keeps everyone in the know.

kylash327
05-26-2003, 12:24 AM
Midwest Cosplay Affiliation? Group? League? lol

Yui
05-26-2003, 01:55 AM
oh no, you call us a league and then we have to go bowling or something ^_^*

Um, I'm way tired and worked too much today and cursed the IKEA gods and am even less coherant. Um, but -- an informal club is more what I was thinking too. (Eep, I'm not volunteering for skits or anything now.) Informal enough to be stressless, but official enough to sound serious when requesting clearance to run amuk at HotR and such. Not that we'll be running amuk, of course.

Ayaka
05-26-2003, 02:06 AM
DANGIT, there goes my idea to call it the League of Extraordinary (Midwestern) Cosplayers . . . >< Heheh ^_~ And, aww, I wanted to run amok! ("Amok amok amok . . . *BAM*" <-- wow that was an obscure reference, you can tell it's late.) The IKEA gods are as vengeful as the CTA gods . . . *nods in sympathy*

RikkuX

Hmmm...a name...
The Midwestern Cosplayer ....
Gathering
Allience
Guild
Society
Wing
Fellowship (er...sounds more like we're hobbits or something...)
Partnership
Hookup

...though I'm just playing with some words here.

I understand the whole lets be informal thing, and thats a good idea - though 'club' seems wayyy too informal. However r there going to be offices?

kylash327
05-26-2003, 08:09 AM
Well from my experience, Alliance is use for all the Star Wars things, because it sounds really political and grand. Society is well...doesnt fit us. Are there some type of japanese things or words like these? Something that would fit better... Midwestern Cosplay Dynasty? hahahaa, ok I'm shutting up...

RikkuX
05-26-2003, 08:41 AM
well.....
madoi is Japanese for 'small gathering'
shinwa is 'fellowship'
ouchou is dynasty

kylash327
05-26-2003, 10:56 AM
I personally like Midwestern Cosplay Guild, sounds like a group but not something too snooty or uptight, but then it still sounds dorky, but I think no matter what its called it will sound dorky ^_^; Unless its like the Royal Order of Midwestern Cosplayers, hahaha

RyanW
05-26-2003, 11:52 AM
Okay, okay. How about the Chicago Cosplay Club. CCC for short? Maybe C to the third?

The URL could be ChicagoCosplayers.com

Other ideas:

"The midwestern association of the league of cosplayers guild members alliance."

Or MALCGMA!

It's perfect!!!!

Oh God, better yet! If we call it "The Illinois Holy Church of Cosplaying Christians" then we're sure to get a ton of money from George Bush!

EDIT: ANother thing, even though we're not all from Chicago, we're probably going to be having any meetings or gatherings in the area, and our major con is in the area. Plus I think Chicago sounds nicer than Midwestern, and I might be wrong, but I think the furthest away anyone is is like Wisconsin or something. Is there anyone outside the Illinois border states?

RikkuX
05-26-2003, 12:36 PM
I agree, i dont like the sound of 'Midwestern'...my new ideas:
Chicago Cosplayer Company or the Collection of Chicago Cosplayers

kylash327
05-26-2003, 01:42 PM
Chicagoland Cosplayers?

Pink Bunnie
05-26-2003, 02:14 PM
Maybe if we took Ryan's and kylash's suggestions and made them one? Chicagoland Cosplay Club The phonetics of that one just sound better with having the consequtive c's. Rollz off the tongue better and is easy to remember.

S.N.A.C.C.
Seven Nation of Army of Chicagoland Cosplayers

I've been hearing that song way to often on the radio.

Chicagoland Cosplay Club sounds good! ^_^

Ayaka
05-26-2003, 02:44 PM
*kicks Q101 in the head for spawning that last one* lol.

I like Chicagoland Cosplay Club. It's good to have names you can shorten, so like Ryan said we could call it C^3 (C cubed), ChicagoCos, or something for short. Plus having "-land" in there includes pretty much everyone. I think my vote would be for Pink Bunnie's suggestion.

RikkuX
05-26-2003, 02:56 PM
^_^ I like ChicagoCos

Yui
05-26-2003, 03:27 PM
C-3 huh? Okay, good to have the land in there. Cuz I was just thinking something simple like Cosplay Chicago, but throwing the land in there includes everyone more.

Menchi
05-26-2003, 04:57 PM
i like it ^^ c^3 so short an sweet too. i woudl love to be part of a thing like tht if ya would accept me ^^;?

Ayaka
05-26-2003, 05:03 PM
It's not the sort of thing that you have to get accepted into, it'd be for anyone in the area. ^^

Okay, seems like we're relatively settled on the name? ^^ So . . . we need a URL. Yui, would it be a subdomain on your space? Cause then I can set up one of those invisible router type thingies . . . I'm willing to pay for the URL. www.chicagolandcosplay.com ? Or some other variation? (None of them are taken.)

Uh and after that we need to talk about what sections we need on the site. Kylash, you up for doing the design for us?

kylash327
05-26-2003, 05:12 PM
Sure thing! chicagolandcosplay.com sounds great.

RikkuX
05-26-2003, 05:37 PM
Yay! We have a name! And soon a site ^_^ Genki!

RyanW
05-26-2003, 09:13 PM
Awesome, now all we need is a geocities account to host it on, MWA HA HA!!

I can see it now.

A few 'reflecting pond' javascripts, a few laughing skulls, some animated torches. Yellow text on a black background.

We're two steps from the ultimate Dragonball Z page!!!

Just worked this out a bit with Ayaka and wanted to post it here to see what you all think, this is just the basica idea for the top header and navigation bar, it would have glowing rollovers ect...

I don't think it will be like that, Ryan, heheh. ^^;

Uh, btw, I went ahead and registered the domain name - www.chicagolandcosplay.com. ^^ I couldn't help myself, I just went for it. So at the very least, we won't be hosted at geocities. ;P

BTW, would the especially interested parties be willing to/ have time to have a little AIM chat about all of this sometime this week? It seems like it might be a better way to have a discussion. Just a suggestion. ^^

Yui
05-27-2003, 01:24 AM
kylash, I sent you the ftp info in a pm just now. Do with the space as you wish.

And yeah, AIM chat is fine with me. Any evening this week works for me.

It might take a few days or hours for the domain to start working, but once it does, here it is, give me feedback on the design and such if youd like, there will be more content once we start getting things planned and such, enjoy!

Yui
05-27-2003, 08:14 PM
Hey, the domain name is working already. Yea. Looks nice -and- doesn't take any time to load at all (even on this oldold clunky modem.) Like the little Rock ad, tho...this makes it seem much more official now.
Okay...so not that much to look at yet, but cool to exist. ^_^

Ayaka
05-27-2003, 08:18 PM
Yeah we need . . . err . . . content. lol. I didn't want to just write the stuff up though, wanted to talk to other people about it first. That's why I'd like to do the chat.

Uh, we haven't figured out how to have people join yet, I think we're probably going to have you just email Kylash so he can put it straight up; we were thinking a thumbnail pic and whatever name you want to go by, with a link to your cosplay.com profile.

kylash327
05-27-2003, 08:28 PM
Yeah, I just went through this thread and grabbed a few people who posted and threw them up there to start with. If you dont see yourself up there or you want a diferent icon, email me at Kylash_327@yahoo.com and lets get this baby rollin.

Yui
05-27-2003, 08:40 PM
Oh, do ya think we should all have actual photos of ourselves up as the icons (even though most of ya already do)?
& If we're linking directly to our cp.com profiles, can those who are not yet members here access those? Maybe we should suggest joining cp.com first for optimum usage.

I'd like to join too! I'm really into cosplaying now. I guess when you start out with such a kick ass character like Roger Smith....its bound to go to your head. .... Woo hoo!

Sure they cna still join, they just wont have a link to their profile since they dont ahve one. Ayaka and I are trying to figure out a way to have people join themselves and upload their own icons...so hold off a bit on sending them to me, sorry about that.

Damn, 5 AM!! What school are you from? I thought Mather was the only school that started at 7:10 in the morning. Cause I use to wake up on 5:00 o'clock in the morning just to go to school (I'm slow getting ready to school, that's why).

That I can explain since I used to do it in my junior year of high school.

5:30 - Wake up, take a shower
5:50 - get a quick bite to eat
6:00 - get dress
6:20 - check the weather
6:30 - leave from home
6:45 to 6:50 - arrive at school (by foot)
6:50 - get school breakfast
7:00 - go to my locker
7:10 - get to class
7:10 to 7:45 - SLEEP DURING CLASS!
7:55 to 7:59 - get to other class
7:59 to 8:44: SLEEP DURING CLASS, AGAIN!
8:48 to 9:33: try to stay awake for class for the whole day...

RyanW

I believe she was inferring to the possibility of being insane enough to want to see the world prior to noon, rather than the logistics of doing so.

Anyway, holy shit! You guys are fast! I took a few days off to do some work, and here the whole site is up!

It's running pretty slow right now, I'd suggest compressingthe graphics, or maybe working on something simpler. I like the links though, the layout is cool. I think we should definately have profile pages, and info on possible events was looking good. I, of course, want a link to limebarb.com, but that's just for fun.

Sounds good.

er...yeah well i get up at about 5:30 to eat and get ready so the bus can pick me up at 6 (i only live 15 min away from my school, but i'm the 1st one on) to get me to school at 7 so i can get to my dance class at 7:17...its 0 hour, so i WONT be doing this next year...

yeah, i hate telling ppl i have to go to sleep at 9-9:30 just so that i can function the next morning - it sucks being a night and morning person....but its not so bad

How do i function? - caffiene...and they wonder why i'm addicted to it... ^_^ i love Starbucks

That's very close sound like me in my junior year, but my first class was Geometry *sp*. In that class, there's only like 10 to 15 (plus teacher) in the class!.... Who the hell want to start school at 7:10 in the morning. When I needed to wake up at that time, I usually go to sleep at 10:30, and set my alarm at 5:30. And I did this without caffine!...

......ANYWAY... Are we still up for that AIM chat tonight?....

The Member page we have up right now is temporary, Ziggy is maybe gonna make us a script so that it's automated (but he's a busy guy). Like I've said, I'm going to be out of town this weekend, may have no net access. But I'm going to try to have a draft for the about page up tonight so that you guys can give opinions.

BTW, the link button in Kylash and my sigs - go ahead and grab it and use it to link to the site. That's what they're for. ^^

PetitCharat - Uh, we really haven't decided yet what membership requirements there are, if any. If you're working on a costume of your own or you've commissioned one in the past, then yes, you can join.

RikkuX
05-29-2003, 04:33 PM
Hm...Requirements? Well if we do decide on requirements, one ought to be seriousness - you have to be seriously dedicated to cosplay (otherwise, why bother even joining the club?) or at least take it seriously.

kylash327
05-29-2003, 05:30 PM
Kinda hard to measure seriousness ^_^; Might have to have a 1 costume or In Progress costume limit or something...

Troppy
05-30-2003, 04:29 PM
Mm, what a pretty website! Troppy will certainly join...

are there going to be actual profile pages eventually, or is everything going to be linked up to cosplay.com? o_0 We should eventually do a little more independent info pages if we're going to hold events like House on the Rock in the name of C^3 as opposed to cosplay.com...

...argh, that sounded bratty...you know what I mean, right? ^^; for the sake of professionalism, and all...

Menchi
05-30-2003, 05:43 PM
weee i hope i can get this one costume finished in time so i woudl have a new costme for some kinda meeting ^^;;; otherwise i can go in something old from before...

Ayaka
05-30-2003, 11:24 PM
I don't think we can measure seriousness. I think the only way to do that is to say, you must really have started on a costume, or have worn commissioned costumes to cons before. Though, I really can't imagine why a non-cosplayer would want to be in a cosplay group. They wouldn't get much out of it. *personally annoys the heck out of normals with endless cosplay talk*

I would like to have independent profiles at some point. But they're not going to be as extensive as the ones here. There's really nothing to be gained by duplicating Admin's work here on our own site; but a slightly expanded profile is probably in the future.

Troppy
05-30-2003, 11:28 PM
it's more of...I feel bad just linking everything back to this site. It's like...if you're just gonna link patrons back to cosplay.com features, I begin to question the purpose of the site's existance. Is it basically just so we have an organizational name to drop at HotR, etc? o_0

kylash327
05-31-2003, 01:26 AM
I linked them back here because everyone has a profile here and all of their pictures are here, its kind of pointless to make a copy of that for the C3 site. The sites purpose is to post meetings and information as well as members, not to be a completely independant entity.

RikkuX
05-31-2003, 02:52 PM
I dont really care what you guys do as far as profile pages. Maybe we can make new ones once we've had some photo shoots. *Shrug*

Ayaka
06-01-2003, 10:39 PM
Like I said, the current setup may be only temporary. Kylash put this site together for us EXTREMELY fast, with wonderful results; let's not dump too much more work on him right away! We can't hope to duplicate the site here; we don't have the time, the money, the bandwidth, etc. A slightly expanded profile page, with location, website links, that sort of thing, may be in the future for the site; but it would be pointless to even try to make something as extensive as what's already here at cosplay.com.

Certainly we will have pics from our gatherings and photo shoots on the site, and maybe each member can have one full-length image in their profile at some point.

Yes, didn't get a chance to post about that last night, Admin has set up a forum for us. ^^ So we're going to use that for discussion from now on.
