View Full Version : Super Mario Galaxy

*I'm a huge Super Mario fan, but I'm gonna try to remain impartial as I write this.

I picked up Super Mario Galaxy earlier today for the Wii, and I wanted to start a thread with my first impressions and for what will likely be a large discussion the game.

My most primal impression is that this is easily the most fleshed out Wii game yet. By that, I mean everything about it is Wii- not just the controls. The graphics, the content, it all screams Wii. Granted, there have been great games on the Wii, like Zelda: TP and Super Paper Mario, but their controls were generally tacked out. Metroid Prime 3 would be an exception, but the game is a pretty steady traditional sequel, which I think voids it from having the same Wii-feel of Galaxy.

For those that haven't played or seen videos of the game, I'll elaborate. The graphics are top-notch. They're not just top-notch in that they're the best the Wii can do as opposed to the standards of other next-gen games, but they're top notch in that this is how a Mario game (and similar games of the platforming genre) should look like. It's so vibrant, so fun, and so generally well designed with an extensive color pallet. Yes, the pipes, the Goombas, and the pirahna plants are there, but the bees, the awesome 2-D settings, and the general display of the universe is really well done. It's not going to make you awe at the cosmic scope as much as Hubble telescope pictures would with the real universe, but it's pretty darn nice.

Controls, as aforementioned, are great. You mainly use three buttons and the joystick but with a lot emphasis on the remote. The remote is used for pointing and collecting star-bites, which are used for various purposes. I won't mention much else about controls, except that they're minimalist and pretty intuitive.

The gameplay is where the game obviously shines. There's a bunch of throw-backs to Super Mario 64 but not enough to nauseate you. The majority of the game is compromised of new elements and a mixture of 2-D and 3-D spherical gameplay. Also, like SM64, the game is non-linear: you're allowed to go around, picking and choosing what you want to do in whatever order, without necessitating you to do a level you might not find fun (although they really expand the planets so nothing feels overdone or too dry).

The other aspect I wanted to mention was music. It's simple but great. A lot of it is casually mixed, such as the music for invincibility, but the level music is brand new and very appealing. It's great mixture to the other aesthically pleasing elements of the game.

I think that about sums up my few hours with the gameplay. I've been really satisfied so far, especially since the game doesn't scream "Easy" at you (there's no generous spread of 1-Up's like in the New Super Mario Brothers). I came in with high expectations and have been happifully not let down. And with 1/12 of the game done for the night, I'm expecting the game to expand even more.

That being long-windingly said, what's everyone out there thinking of the game?

Not the first person to make this analogy but:

Mario 64 : Mario 1
Mario Galaxy : Mario 3

It's great. Get it

Yup. Here's hoping we get the Super Mario World part of the analogy, eventually, as well. For now, this game far suffices.

GOTY. Period.

My thoughts exactly. This is the great Mario game everyone envisioned when the Wii was first announced. I will spare everyone my thoughts on the game as they are on my Blog. (http://chison-mn.blogspot.com/)

Just got 50 stars in, and I'm still floored. Each time you think this game is figured out, they throw in a new twist for you, something else you have to do. Some would label this a pointless collect-a-thon, but it actually far surpasses anything Rare was able to do, keeping the game in the realm of reality while still trying innovative new things. As much as I love Ocarina of Time (my favorite game ever) we may very well have a new champion.

All I know is that gaming will never...

........EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVERRRR....

....Be the same......Uh-gain.

(Hey, my favorite wrestler just came back to WWE. I had to pay tribute in SOME way.)

I love that you worked in a Jericho reference .

I'm still only about 15 stars in (I was juggling Phoenix Wright 3 and Contra 4 a few days ago), and I love this game. My favorite stage thus far is the one where Mario is guiding the ball through the golf course-like level. Please tell me there's another level like that later in the game.

I LOVE the comets. Some of that most fun I've in a video game ever come from the comets.

I LOATHE the spring-suit. That's all. It sucks. It just does- it has maybe ONE good use the entire game. Bring back Tanooki, you brought in the Fire Flower (even though that's mad classic and deserves to be in every Mario game).

There certainly is. It's even more fun than the golf course, IMO. A lot harder too.

(I also wanna give props to the Y2J references. ~Break the walls down, break down the bricks of Mushroom Kingdom, baby I'm your Goomba, ain't you my Mario~)

A Cosplayer named Starwind824 agrees. i'm playing the game with my younger sister as we speak. The fact that she hasn't play a traditional Mario game since 64 and she's already bagged 10 stars by herself tonight. Bioshock was gonna take the CHris cake this year, but I can't now with Mario being this damn good. Amazing game is amazing, and as close as perfect as it gets. And yes my sister is of age and single, and no I'm not hooking her up with any of you.

GOTY without a doubt.

I'm at 88 starts (avoiding the last area *BOWSER* to gather more stars) and that last world gets friggin' hard >>;

The only thing I don't like about the game is you lose all your lives you gain during 1 sitting. Maybe that's just a glitch in the game we got, but it drives me nuts when I try to play a hard level XD;

On the bright side, they really give one-ups out like candy. When you start up the game, you get five from Peach, got the one behind the kitchen, one in the crate on the garage... once you can fly, got one under the bedroom, one on the spire of the observatory... And all of them respawn whenever you enter a dome and exit, heh. Then 50 star bits is cake to get... >.>

I just finished the 60 stars Bowser fight.
Verry weird ending though...

I've been trying to hold off beating Bowser to collect 120 stars. But then I realized you NEED to beat him in order to unlock the rest of the stars.

On the lives issue- I'm glad lives don't accumulate. The New SMB's was too easy because of it IMO. To paraphrase what a friend of mine said, "It's great that you're given the option of making the game hard or easier [those free Peach 1-Up's, etc] for yourself".

I recently got all 120 stars. =) Some of the stars can be so annoying... (the timed coin ones) but not too frustrating that I'd get pissed or something.

Since I beat the game, I've been replaying as Luigi. He's tougher to control but it's still pretty fun to play through it again as him. I just hate it when I accidentally go over an edge that isn't a planetoid thing because I forget that he doesn't stop abruptly.

Beat it with 82 stars last night. Wow. Wow. Fucking epic. Definitely going to keep going and complete it 100% as much as I can.
