View Full Version : Moments of Video Game stupidity

Ever done something so stupid you think less of yourself?

Myself, I've:

Resident Evil DS: JUST found out about training mode, after unlocking almost everything, bought it when it was new.

Final Fantasy VII: Used Aeris and Yuffie to fight that boss when getting Vincent. Problem? They were underleveled and I forgot to put materia on them, so it was pretty much a Cloud solo.

Resident Evil 3: Honestly thought I could take on Nemesis with no healing items, yellow caution health, but plenty of shotgun shells, durrr.

Dragon Quest VIII: Taught Yangus clubs, and the hero boomerangs. After about ten hours I just restarted my game. God clubs and boomerangs suck.

Super Mario Bros 3: I did the ultimate fail once, I died on the first goomba.

Simpsons: Hit and Run: I swear to God, I beat the entire game not knowing that you could hold the B Button to run.

I would have to say anytime I kill myself in an FPS game.

Oh! taking on the Magimaster in FF 6 without casting Life 3, since I had no idea what it did at the time XD

Making the wrong jump in any Mario game and dying...those are the worst...

Ninja Gaiden NES: trying to exploit the "get purposely hit, ascend slightly higher to reach that normally out of reach platform" and realizing "Crap, I was THAT low on health?!?" Doo-doody-doo, Doo-doody-doo-doo, DOO DOO DOO!

Super Puzzle Fighter 2: Actually losing to Dan with my Morrigan. Damn you red activator gem god! Why hath thou forsaken me!

Final Fantasy 4: Trying to take advantage of the "Reflect spells off of my own party" trick and realizing - 1. the reflect spell has diminished or 2. Meteo does not reflect back off of you. Stupid! Stupid!

Final Fantasy 9: Trying to remember to give a Kupo nut to the moogle in the bell cavern after every letter delivery without skipping over a letter delivery-Kupo nut receiving oppurtunity and I am incapable of returning to the bell cavern to give new Kupo nut to said moogle. Drives me Kupo NUTS!

Resident Evil (Any, first time play): What? I need to pick up 2 items in this room? But I don't have any extra spaces left. (Hoofs back to storage room) Ok, dump off extra ammo. (Back to room) Ok, Got these items and.. eh? Crap another item?!? Ugh... (back to storage room).

Breath of Fire 3 or 4: Trying to be an EXP whore and powering up lava monsters to the point they can give 65,000+ pts. per monster, but then they regenerate all depleted health the next turn and they can kill you in one hit. Dwoops!

Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre: Trying over and over again to get the stats/soldiers/alignment/element you want without FAQs with the intro questions. How can "Sharing the vision" of "Terror" and makes you more loyal?

Super Mario Bros 3: I did the ultimate fail once, I died on the first goomba.

LOL, aww.

I can think of one other thing to top that (and we've all done it, as much as we've all probably been KO'd on a Gomba every once in a while): the infamous, odd positioning of a a straight piece in Tetris.

I think one of my personal most often repeated dumb things is looking at another screen instead of mine in an assortment of multiplayer games, namely Mario Kart. It's really dumb, especially if you're not even playing similar characters or similar carts, and by the time you realize it, you're cart's been going the opposite way for an entire lap.

The Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker- I didn't figure out you jumped automatically when you reach a ledge until I was a good two hours into the game. T.T

Final Fantasy- Screw Jessie! I'm haulin' butt out of here before the reactor blows!

Final Fantasy X- Yunalesca will be a breeze! I don't need to save!

Final Fantasy XII- Chaos will be a breeze! I don't need to save!

Parasite Eve- I ran STRAIGHT into the ultimate being during the little chase at the end of the game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne- I beat my head against the wall battling Metatron for... three weeks? Maybe a little more. I would fight, die, go grind some, fuse new demons, die, grind some more, and EVENTUALLY! I beat him. I made a beeline for the final dungeon, the Tower of Kagatsuchi. The first battle, they got the drop on me, and Berith fired off a death spell.
Hit.
Dead.
No save.

Haha, reading your guys' reminded me of a few:

I've also done the "casting spell on self after reflect has worn off" or using a spell that isn't reflected. Whoops.

Final Fantasy 6: #1 Leaving poor Shadow behind to die because I was so terrified of dying on that darn island after fighting so many things without saving. D:

#2 Having the Healing Rod equipped and constantly forgetting to use it on my characters instead of healing the enemy.

#3 Walking around for a good 5 minutes wondering why the heck I wasn't running into any monsters, then realizing I had the Moogle Charm on--which stops random encounters.

Final Fantasy 8: Walking around for a good 5 minutes wondering why the heck I wasn't running into any monsters, then realizing I had the No Encounters GF ability on. That gets me every time, I swear. (._.'')

Various: Sometimes in games you're meant to be defeated. You'll work your butt off at trying to win, but the monster/boss/enemy is meant to defeat you. So after a very long many-items-used battle you finally lose just to realize you were meant to. And then the second part of this is when you think "Oh, I'm meant to die here, right?" and you're... not meant to. And you die. And it's game over. And it's like, "Oh crap, I haven't saved in 30 mins."

I shouldn't even admit this...but...I got mad at Soul Calibur 2's conquest mode and punched the glass TV screen, and I broke my hand. Of course, I was a bit younger then, and a bit more naive. I had to go to the doctor the next day to get X-rays and get it wrapped up. It was very awkward to explain it to him. I felt like an IDIOT. Anyways, that's my moment of stupidity. :bigcry:

I remember playing SMB2 as a kid -- I was on the last boss and was so excited I was winning, I kept inching closer and closer to the TV... until I hit the NES' reset button with my knee right as I was about to beat the game.

Speaking of destroying stuff, when I get really angry when Im playing something like...say...Soul Calibur 3 (at times the easiest game, other times its F%#@% HARD!!) I bit my PS2 controller...it left teeth marks on it..

Oh, I pulled the 'it's such an obvious move but I didn't think of it' with Twilight Princess, too - I could beat down the wooden bars with my sword.

I broke my only PS2 controller while after I got killed by Chaos on FF XII. I just started slamming the controller into the floor. Hilarity ensued as I tired to take it apart and fix but just ended up making it MUCH worse. XD

Final Fantasy X: (this is when it first came out) Not knowing about the sphere grid (or what it does), until half way through the game. No worries I Love Tidus, I did the SAME thing. -__- Sucked so hard to have to start over again. Other than that, just missing moves, pushing the wrong direction in Shenmue when a button combo pops up, and then getting nailed by one of the thugs or something lol. Can't say that I've broken a controller out of frustration, BUT I have taken apart an old xbox controller to see how it works. Never did get it work again....XD

I hafta agree with u there. I love FFX but I hated the sphere grid.

SMB3 - when obtaining the Hammer Bros suit, a Piranha Plant shot a fireball at me. I ducked down to take cover in the Hammer Bros' suit shell. The fireball hit the shell but I still took damage. FAILED

gh2- playing through misirlou on expert a few times beating them all when playing.then trying jordan on expert twice only losing once then thunderhorse on expert but couldn't on the count of the buttons screwing up and the strumbar breaking on me.later that night i did the realife rocker thing and broke my guitar in rage by bashing off of my basement cement filled floor.an hour after that my roommate told me he was ready to fix it like he said he would but my guitar was already broken beyond repair...i ended up having to use my ps2 controller (which i am now good at) the whole two months through until i got GHIII:LOR...all that timing had made me want to bash my head off of concrete when i figured i could have had all of it not happen.

final fantasy tactics-the very first time i played the original game i began on the first battle (ramza wearing his purple armor) i tried to get my menu working when it was my turn to act.i was sitting there in frustration for about 30 mins not knowing after all that time spent i was supposed to press "X" a few times then "O"....

i too did the stupid thing of not knowing "reflect" was off but instead i casted ultima twice with the soul of themasa relic on cyan...i felt like a complete insipid fool because not only did i get game over it was the tower in the world of ruin i was in fighting magic master but at the same time i realized i had not saved since the second time fighting "ultros"..

(this next one happened a few hours ago) i was playing ff6 on my gba then decided to stop playing it.i put it in my pocket and walked around for about 10 minutes.when i wanted to play ff6 again i went looking for my gba but couldn't find it.i got mad at my sisters and accused them of stealing it,after arguments i was grounded and told to go to my room to think about what i had done.and so i did.apon deciding to sleep for the night i touched my right leg thinking someone was touching my.i reach into my pocket to find my gba.....man i'm a retard some times....i stayed awake after that so i could type my misfortunes here and see if someone was more "unrealizing" than i.

hm...one of the moments I am ashamed to admit is when I played for hours (over 4) in star ocean 2. I hadn't saved and was doing great. I was heading out of a dungeon after defeated a boss and thought "goodness I haven't saved for awhile, I'll do it as soon as I get out of here" I walked out of the dungeon to go onto the world map and the game froze... it was one of those moments where you just kinda freeze too....and stare at the tv...in disbelief and shock....waiting ...and waiting...and hoping...sooo sad...but I learned..

In the final boss in Kingdom Hearts II, there's a part where you're being blasted by a million red bolts a second and I'm cursing because I can't deflect a single one, leaving me either dead or with very VERY low hit points after the barrage. It wasn't until my nephew asked me to beat the boss again that I realised you're supposed to hit the triangle AND the x button to get both Riku AND Sora to deflect the hits. All this time, I was doing it wrong and failing at life. :P

This happened while my father and I were playing SSBM:

It was a team battle and we both used Pikachu. We were on Fox's stage(the huge spaceship). Anyway, we both already had tendencies to mix up our Pikachu on the screen but usually we figured it out after we realized that we couldn't attack or move right.
Well this time, I got mixed up and noticed that I couldn't get Pikachu to stop walking toward the edge of the stage. I tried to guide him back when I quickly realized I was watching the wrong Pikachu. I glancing arond the screen for my Pikachu only to find him falling off the opposite end of the stage. Turns out both of us had been watching the wrong Pikachu and inadvertently led ourselves over the edge that wew weren't watching.
Needless to say, we both lost a life for that one.

I was playing Halo 3 on legendary and beat the flood...and turned off my system before it saved...so i had to do it all over again :(

on stuntman, it took me 4 months of playing to figure out what the action button was. I looked it up in the game cotroller area, and i still pressed the wrong button for another 15 minutes.

Breaking the Arcade's drumstick while playing DrumMania was really fun. I was trying not to break in and eventually I just said "FUCK IT" smash the thing over the bar and kept playing with a scrap of a drumstick.

I've had a bunch of facepalm moments in games, definitely RPGs, but I'm really going to have to mention a World of Warcraft tale.

My priest had been my first character and I was starting to Pvp more frequently in Warsong Gulch. I would use my Fade ability (which drops some hate/aggro from monsters) and run between the buildings thinking the Horde couldn't see me because the graphic showed me fading out and I would wait for the cooldown to do it again.

GG me.

Mario Kart DD - Repeatedly missing the bridge on the DK course. My steering's terrible with racing games.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - The sign told me to blow out the candles. This being my first DS game (on my brand new DS), I took the GameBoy option - swung my sword, rolled into them, did just about everything before I gave up and looked up a walkthrough.

"Blow into the microphone."

A huge facepalm followed.

...I'm guilty for that one -_____-;; I spent like a week swinging my freaking sword at it, thinking maybe it was multiple spin attacks or something.
Finally figured it out after reading it somewhere online... definitive facepalm moment.

The problem is that I'm a hardcore gamer with low brain-power. I love gaming, but I always get lost or don't know what I'm doing. When I'm tired, I skim over some details, so there are a lot of 'WHAT DO I DO NOW?!? I'm stuuuuuuck!!'s and 'I lost?!? But... I-I... didn't save!! T__T's.

Another memorable moment in Phantom Hourglass was while I was revisiting the Phantom Temple. I was at the second floor of teh acshun, I think, the floor with that first rotating Phantom.
On the top left corner, after bombing a wall, I found this little hole. I was lost, didn't know how else to get a key to keep going, and figured that I should roll in it, and claim a key or something - made perfect sense, figuring that that's why they implanted the rolling option.
I was stuck on it for like two weeks. -__-;;;
Then, after I got my walkthrough, it said to ignore it for now. Boy, did I feel stupid.

I remember playing FFVIII when you're in the zoo area i guess it is? Any way with the T-REX that pops up. I fell asleep and woke up fighting that. Oh boy!
I've done that too.

I've done a few stupid FFVIII things. One was when I was fighting Edea and I drew Alexander from her (I think that's the one you draw from her) but then I died. So I reset the game and didn't draw Alexander from her because I thought I already did.

Another stupid FFVIII thing I did was use the "No Encounter" ability for three discs. I got to Adel and was like, level 20. Totally had to start over because of that. Note to self: just because random battles are annoying does not mean they aren't necessary.

Spending a good hour chipping away and chipping away at Psycho Mantis in MGS. I actually managed to kill him.

It wasn't until my second time through the game that I realized the trick.

On Resistance: Fall of Man for the PS3 there was this one level where I had to fight off this giant spider thing. I didn't know it was coming since it was added only after playing the level on a harder difficulty. I back myself into a corner to try to kill the spider. Regular guns never work on it and I wound up wasting about 20 min. playing hide-and-seek before it finally killed me.

Next time around I happen to notice the tank that's conviently sitting right where I watched the spider appear from previously. Apparently I was supposed to use the tank from the start because it only took two shots to kill the spider.
