Pretty self-explanatory folks. What parts in video games have you play that you found creepy, unsettling, or just plain scared the bejesus out of you.

I remember my earliest moment of this. It was an old NES game called Whomp 'EM where you played a native american kid with a spear. There was this level called the Ice Ritual level. The level starts up and music for it is rather scary sounding; well as scary as an 8-bit sound system can get.
Anyways, you're going down the level and suddenly you have these GIANT eyeballs staring at you.
Not to mention, you have disembodied hands trying to attack you. As a kid, I was creeped out by this level and had to have friend beat it for me.

Another one was for the awesome game, Castlevania: symphony of the night. Now, the whole gothic vampire atmosphere was great in it
though there was always one area that just unnerved me. The cathedral. Something about the music that created that weird, ominous feeling.

Anyways, there's this one room in that portion of castle that still bugs me to this day. The confession room. You go into it and suddenly
the music is replaced with this droning church bell sound. There’s a confession booth at the end of it. Depending on what chair you sit,
something weird will happen.
If you sit in the confessors chair, the ghost of a priest will walk in and will either attack you with spears or drop wine for you.
If you sit in the priest's chair, the ghost of a crying woman will walk in and sit down. If you stand up out of the chair, she'll cross herself, bow, and disappear. I always wondered, what was it she was confessing. Was she a lost soul doomed to wander Dracula’s castle?

Just little details like that make the game that more memorable.

Sorry that took so long. I have others but I am rather interesting in hearing your stories.

Wasn't there a thread like this before? Hmm...

Anyways, being a fan of Silent Hill there have been many creepy/unsettling parts (too many to list) but even though SH4 wasn't the best the room with Eileen's giant head creeped me out... until I found out you can make her go cross eyed. XD

Silent Hill 3 when you walked into a silent room full of headless mannequins except for one. Then when you walked out it you heard a shriek and it was sooo scary! (I had the volume way up in the middle of the night in the basement!) I worked up enough courage to go back in the room and the head had exploded and there was blood everywhere. So scary!

Yeah hemlock_spider, the Eileen head in SH4 was pretty damn scary too. I didn't like that one bit! I love Silent Hill. ^_^

As much as Silent Hill is maligned for its craptacular combat, I will say that there's no better series in survival horror when it comes to creating a horror atmosphere.

That being said, my favorite would have to be Resident Evil 4 and the part where you first face the Regenerators. It's just incredible, how you hear their breathing, and when they see you, there's this quick, low piano chord. Even when you know they're coming, it scares the crap out of me. It's even worse when they're Iron Maidens and you pull out your rifle at them..."Oh God...where's the leeches where's the leeches where's the leaches **** I'm a shish-kabob".

Creepiest one for me that I can think of at the moment is in Silent Hill 1. When in the elementary school and going into that one room with the cat in the locker making that noise...then open the locker to see nothing but blood....X_X;.

No way guys... Haunting Ground. That one creepy homonculous bitch with the glass shard/hot poker chasing you around whipping her head around like Valtiel from SH laughing like a freak on acid... then a short silence....
...
...
...
..........
Followed by a hiss that would shrivel any man's privates. Can't be watched without making scratch marks in a table.

The only other one I can think of that tightens ones rectum is the part in Silent Hill 3 where the creepy voice talks you through the haunted house. I wish I knew what the guy was saying as I ran away from the red light... I'm too busy running away from said red light to pay attention!

Paradius is more funny than creepy, but the huge gogo girl waddling back and forth with her legs is a bit unsettling to me...

Also, I creeped out my girlfriend when I showed her a clip of Klonoa 2 during the snowboard race with the music "Stepping Wind" in the background (too lazy to leave youtube link). It's beyond cute and it will creepily get you to sing the words with it if you watch it too many times.

Oh yeah, the first time also when I walked into that mannequin room scared the crap out of me as well cause I didn't see it coming (plus the volume was loud as usual). XDDD

Also in SH2 the part with Pyramid Head and the mannequins... o_o; 'Nuff said.

* Most levels of Abuse when nothing seems to happen for a while, until an unexpected trigger point occurs.

* First time I played the level "343 Guilty Spark" in Halo: Combat Evolved.

* First time getting hit in the face with an alien during the "Core" level in Crysis.

Eternal Darkness was a pretty creepy game. What with the sanity meter, and the odd things happening when you ran out. Very good game, but VERY creepy parts to it.

And pretty much any Silent Hill game. I'm a big wuss when it comes to Silent Hill games, but I still love them.

Oh man! I forgot about that! The sounds and music surrounding Regenerators is so frickin scary! I agree, the low piano chord is terrifying, especially when you're turning a corner down a hall, and that's all there is, just one Regenerator making it's way toward you. I did not want to defrost those bastards! lol

lol I know, I thought something probably wouldn't happen just because that's how Silent Hill likes to mess with you, and you start to leave and think you're safe when it screams, oh man! So scary!

Yeah, lol anything involving Pyramid Head is usually indescribable.

Actually she made me very frustrated and creeped out at the same time. Just because it felt like she was everywhere. The part that creeped me out the most with her was when I ran into the two rooms looking almost identical. I found her in one room but she left me alone, went in the other room, checked the closet (lol i'm a moron), and she scared the hell out of me jumping out.

...I was also creeped out the one time she actually killed me. That was some messed up stuff coming out of speakers >_>;.

I really need to play silent hill sometime, all and these other games sound cool.

Well I'm in project zero series (1, 2 and 3)
Can't play it its so damn scary.
The most unsettling parts...
- is hearing the music change to whatever-ghosts theme, and the controller slowly vibrating getting faster as the ghost gets closer to you = especially if you can't see it.
- probably the fact that each ghost has a theme music, you soon know "oh crud its the broken neck" >< that's if you don't hear them first. The blind ghost "my eyes! I can't see!"
- I'm so lucky, I always get the "can't see ghost, turn around = right in front of you" moments.

Project zero 3, it gets more unsettling when scary stuff begin to happen in the 'awake' world. Its supposed to be your home! Safe from ghosts and horrid curses gah.
Literally things slowly start to happen that you either miss, or catch with the corner of your eye.
example: walk past a room, feet behind the curtain which dissappear in a second. You're reaction "did I just see feet. Was that feet?!"

Other then that, thief, if its not zombies, its ghosts or hammer haunts chanting in their ghostly-screaming voices "Flames around you, flames, nothing but flames, burning your flesh" or "join us, join us, join us now!"
oO that does not help the brave level when trying to sneak past them.

First scary moment: dropped in the abandond mine, walk up to strange coloured dead body. Dead body jumps up. Attacks you. I scream.
Second scary moment: walk up to dead body of some random person. 'dead' random person jumps up. Attacks. I fall off chair.
Third scary moment: Follow a person, blackjack him. He doesn't faint. Me=OO ... he turns around = skull face. I quit game.

And... thief 3: The Cradle mission.
I mean it used to be asylum and then an orphanage @_@' and now its abandoned... for good reason.

And then there are the fan missions, some of those can be just as scary *cries*
but come on, thats why I like em heheheh.
Nothing like a good scare in the middle of the night.

The part in Fatal Frame II where you are walking through a courtyard, when suddenly you hear a scream and a ghost falls from the roof of of the building. Wasn't expecting that one. XD Then the broken mass of limbs that the body becomes on impact starts to slither towards you...

Ok, I got another one for you and comes from the most least likely game people would expect.

Earthbound for the Snes. Specifically the final fight with Giygas. This is gonna be a long post but please bear with me.

Now a lot of people like to dismiss Earthbound as a kid’s game due to the simple graphics and style but for the 3 people that played it, you would discover that there’s quite a deep storyline in it.

Anyways, spoilers for those who haven’t beaten Earthbound.

To sum it up, Giygas is the big bad of game. An alien who became so powerful that it destroyed his mind and body. As one of his lackeys would call him, “An Almighty Idiot.”
The only way you can even face him is to have the brains of you and your party members transplanted into the bodies of robots and sent into the past to stop him. You come across an area that’s just barren, void of life, save for monsters of course, and the music really reflects that.

You go into a cave and walk along something that resembles organs until you come to the Devil Machine, a machine that holds Giygas. You fight it and it’s your pretty standard boss fight, complete with cheesy RPG battle music. Well, midway through the fight, the music switches to hard rock and things don’t stop getting weird from there.

You then face off against Giygas’ true form, which to be honest, is rather unsettling to see in the middle of night. A swirling vortex that resembles a face screaming in agony. The music nothing more then a static noise.

Then as the battle goes along, the vortex swirls and music switches to something that I can best describe as “Music that you would hear if a clown murdered you in your sleep” During the fight, Giygas will start saying random phrases like, “I’m so happy, It’s wrong, it feels good, Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness.” More on the source of Giygas’ speech later. Soon, the image of Giygas starts to swirl and resemble the outline of a fetus. As you gradually defeat him, the screen will start to go crazy, the music becomes what I best can describe as a choir of voices and static. Some claim you can hear a voice saying “Let me out! Let me out!” Then, the screen goes fuzzy as if your tv is broken before going black.
Still think it’s a kid’s game?

Still need proof. Here are a couple links to said fight.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gbG_gzgyJI Giygas fight pt1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcaErqaoWek Giyas fight pt2

Some interesting trivia: the creator of the Earthbound series, Shigesato Itoi, got the inspiration for Giygas’ speech from a rather traumatic childhood memory. When he was young, he mistakenly walked into an adult movie theater and caught glimpse of a rape scene.

On a side note, there was a dummied out fight in Mother 3 (earthbound) that you can access through hacking. Let’s just say, it rivals that of the Giygas fight in terms of creepiness/unsettling.

RE:2, when the licker jumps through the interrogation window. That was the first time I literally jumped while playing a game.

Condemmed. Another one of those, o, this game puts health and items into lockers...just got done fighting a bunch of creeps, so hopefully there's some health in here...to open and find a screaming psychotic women jumping in my face. I think I pooped a lil then...

There is a room in Fatal Frame/Project Zero 3 on one of the upper floors of the mansion with a closet door that is always closed, and you can never interact with it. Until one time when you walk past it, the door is open, upon going inside, you find a chest, with an item in it. As soon as you take the item, the door slams shut, and dozens of these toddler sized white handprints fade onto the walls, and you hear the EXTREMELY loud sound of a bunch of children screaming and crying, and the door won't open! Eventually the screams, as well as the handprints fade, and the door unlocks. Nearly shat myself. Scariest. Moment. Ever.

HA you guys are going to love this. I remember playing ECCO the dolphin on the Sega Genesis. The game doesnt have a whole lot of music going on and its kinda dark. That can be creepy right??? Well after swimming around for a while I ran into the first alien and that controller of mine flew all the way across that room. I've yet to beat that game....... After all of the horror games I've gone through i'm just not interested in Ecco.. LAWL!!

There is one part of Mass Effect that I found quite unsettling, just because it was presented so well. Since it's such a new game, I'll spoiler tag it.

When you go into Saren's lab on Virmire and find out that his ship, Sovereign, is actually a living Reaper. It's threats are chilling. I've never gotten such an impression of invincible doom from an enemy in any other video game.

Clock Tower One- when a corpse comes crashing though the ceiling, and the power goes out. That you meet the scissorman. One terrifying little SNES game all-in-all.

Final Fantasy VII- When you're trapped in the Shinra tower, and your party wakes up to discover that the doors are unlocked and all the guards have been killed. Than you see the blood trail. The music didn't help. ;_;

Silent Hill One- When you're going through the school I think the first time, and you hear some rattling coming out of a locker. You open it, a Cat jumps out and runs away.

Come back later, and you hear rattling coming from the same locker, you open it up, but there's nothing in there but a pool of blood. you walk away from it and start to head out of the room.

Than a dismembered corpse SLAMS out of locker behind you and falls on the floor.

My heart skipped a beat.

Well the first time i ever was scared by anything was from DOOM 2. The Archviles scared the living hell out of me and honestly, couldnt play the game for awhile after i saw one. The laugh they make is actually a little girls laugh slowed down. Also when they die, the recorded the same little girl saying "why". This level is a maze filled with them and only them and the music adds to the freakyness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0jMK0dyMaA .

Vandal Hearts 2 - After finding out the warden of a mine prison has been raping and sacrificing the young male prisoners in satanic rituals, and has been using this one guy who lost his soul, so he can't do anything, as a sex toy. I kinda double taked. Not to mention he looks like Hitler.

Splatterhouse 2 - Chopping up hanging skinned fetus' with a chainsaw when you are 7 years old is fun.

In Fatal Frame (Project Zero) 1, you're in the Cherry Atrium and heading towards the mansion again. Miku is about halfway up the stairs and all of the sudden Crawling Girl comes out from under the porch. She appeared really suddenly, stayed around just long enough to see her move in a slow and creepy way, and then disappeared just as quickly as she came. That was one of two times in the game that I actually screamed out loud.
(The other time I screamed was when my friend screamed at something, it's a bit of a longish story but it was hilarous)

Fatal Frame 2 really hasn't been too scary yet. I am only on chapter four, though, so it's bound to get better. There was one part where I wasn't scared, but panicked. You're in the Kurosawa (I think) house looking for Mayu and you suddenly come into a room (right before the courtyard type stairs) and One Touch Kill comes out. I don't remember the actual name for the ghost, that's just what my friends and I call him. You basically have to just run around him to get away and hope that he doesn't touch you. My friend was with me when I played through that part and we got sick of getting the ugly game over so we tried it with a cheat code and he STILL killed us with one touch. I actually refused to go into that room for about an hour. XD

Back to Fatal Frame 1...
When you leave it on pause for too long, bloody red handprints appear all ove the screen. It scared the hell out of me the first time I saw it, before I knew that it was just a screensaver.

There is a room in Fatal Frame/Project Zero 3 on one of the upper floors of the mansion with a closet door that is always closed, and you can never interact with it. Until one time when you walk past it, the door is open, upon going inside, you find a chest, with an item in it. Eternal Darkness with the flash of Alex in the tub, I told my friend to examine the tub and it flashed and she freaked and slapped me. Condemned was always creepy since your vision was a bit limited, but in the subway with person behind you pushes you down the stairs was surprising. Actually the very first person who ran past your light at the beginning creeped me out. I thought those prisoner guys with the claws in Resident Evil 4 were worse than the regenerators mainly the one that inevitably busts out the chain in the jail.

OH! Forgot one from Silent Hill 3...

You're in the Hospital and there's a room you go into with a mirror that covers an entire wall. All of the sudden blood starts coming out of the walls on the other side of the mirror and begins to cover the mirror-Heather. Eventually it reaches a sink in the corner of the room and goes through the sink and on to your side of the mirror! The door was locked so all you can do is watch the Heather on the other side of the mirror die untill the door finally opend. Oh, and did I mention that the blood does damage to you when it touches you? Because it does.

resident evil remake- when you first enter the outside cabin near the mansion and that thing comes around the corner and bashes you. it freaked me out so bad. i also hated the shark part. i think it swallowed me whole once.

fatal frame one- i hated the women with no eyes. she was the most annoying ghost in that game, but she was always so hard for me since she moved pretty fast.

Uh.... yeah... What IS that ghost doing to her?!?

Tugging on her dress, asking 'Why do you kill?'

Scares the hell out of me for this: First time I played it, I was 9 months pregnant...and the game FORCES you to play it in the dark. Up the contrast, you can't see jack. So yeah, I'm playing this around 10 pm. My husband is making cracks about it since I had just gotten through the broken back/skittering backwards woman and was a bit more than unnerved. Got to the twin doll fight and he got quiet for a bit...so I moved on...now, I hate dolls. I -REALLY- hate. dolls. First time one tugged on the girl's dress..I cringed and ran the character into another room..then the little bastards went through the wall! Right when that happened, my then belly-growing daughter kicked at the moment the doll tugged on the dress. Heart attack, yes!

I hate dolls.

Fatal Frame 2 really hasn't been too scary yet. I am only on chapter four, though, so it's bound to get better. There was one part where I wasn't scared, but panicked. They're all good.

Clock Tower 3 was a bit unsettling simply because "O god I hope he/she/it doesn't find me, an then AHAAA, aaaaaaahhh *cries*. The hiding places were sometimes sucky.

All the Silent Hills have creepy scenes of course

But everyone has to agree they all jumped when the Dobreman zombie dog jumped through the glass in the Mansion hallway in Resident Evil :O

Metal Gear Solid, where you fight the Psychi guy in the Gas mask & spandex, you thought the game crashed but it was just yknow, haha, an of course the part where he "controls" your controller, everyone must admit they had to go online to find out that you had to put the controller into the second port so he wouldn't predict your movements

Now that was unsettling, that the game designers mind F'd you so good in that game.

I'm with allthatsgeek on the closet in Fatal Frame 3. You can't get out, that's what makes it so horrible. You're locked in there and you don't know what's going to happen. In fact, all the Fatal Frame games have scared me so bad that I can't play them anymore. It's pretty pathetic.

All in all video games are a lot less scary than other things that have happened to me, but those Fatal Frame dealies... I just can't hang. My fiance just bought Haunting Ground for me, for some reason... yeah, looking forward to that.

There were two moments in Okami of all games that spooked me. The first was when you're exploring the sunken ship looking for the Fox Rods and there's a section that if you linger too long, a very large ghost face of a past enemy will appear right in front of the screen and injure Ammy. >.<

The other part was more like "Aw wtf?! HEY!" When you're fighting the Ninetails demon and you try to do a Celestial Brush move, then suddenly another paint brush appears and starts screwing around on your canvas. After the first time, I realised what was happening and more got mad than scared. :P

I agree. When I first saw them I freaked out. It's stressful. It's easier without the "you're-gunna-die" music.

I hate the leeches ;-;

As for any other games...
F.E.A.R has always gotten me. Everything in that game x_x; And I HATE the watchers.
Fatal Frame is another big one for me. What can I say? I'm horrible with suspenseful creepy games.

YES! F.E.A.R either had all the lights flicker, made you go into a room and once you turned the little girl would be standing in the window behind you, looking at you...once you turned the corner, she was gone, but the blood form her victims stayed in place, oooohh i need to play that game again. 0.0

She's the one that starts to skitter at you with the broken back, yes? Her scream was the thing that set up the unnerving for the twins for me. D:

Yes. That and she just...falls...right in your face. And then after you've taken a pic or two she just disappears and then she lets out a loud shreak and falls again!

Scariest ghost in the game, in my opinion...

Final Fantasy Ten. That part where Yuna turns to Tidus and says something along the lines of

I AM SAD YOU ARE SAD I LIKE TO LAUGH.
HAH. HAH. HAH. HAH.

and Tidus receives her criticism by saying

HAH. HAH. HAH. HAH.

Maybe I'll go with a classic and say Naked Raiden.

Though what tops it all is when I was up late one night and a dating sim commercial popped on TV. Well, it was really a strip Mahjong game. But the girls were really, really dissonent and overall dtoic.
However, what was disturbing was that my friend Rocket turned to me and said SHE'S 14 and I was all WHAT
so we rewound and sure enough, on of the character was honestly 14 years old.
In a Strip Mahjong Porn game.
EXCUSE ME?

Having just opened up the Orange Box myself, I have to agree, Scary Headcrabs are scary. Especially the poisonous ones. Usually I just stand there and keep swinging my crowbar until one flies at me. BUT THEN I MISS, ARGH. And then my HP is down to 1 and my HEV is beeping "OH GOD YOU'RE DYING, HERE'S SOME ANTITOXIN" at me.

Honestly, Ravenholm (apparently it's been called Resident Half Life)- that whole town is creepy. You enter it and there's a lower torso hanging from a tree, lovely! And everywhere there are sawblades to throw around (which is satisfying to do, though). And those faster Headcrab zombies, oh geeze. Stop moving so fast so I can shoot you!

I have to say, the laughing scene in Luca in FFX. Now that was creepy.

You win this thread. XDDDDDDDDDDD

I dunno for myself personally.....the little I've seen of my fiance's Haunting Ground is admittedly creepy. Especially that maid Daniella that's totally psychotic and sadistic.

Back when FF7 first came out and I played it the first time. Jenova creeped me out, especially that dang music they'd always play in the background. It just made the apprehension level I felt so much higher.

Going back and playing it now, it's not so scary, but when I first played Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and got to the Shadow Temple, the music scared me. Nowadays, though, it's just mildly unsettling.

I've generally avoided games that freak me out, but I can relate the story of a friend. This friend (let's call him "J") used to get freaked out all the time by the Redeads/Gibdos from the Zelda games.

The way he tells the story, J was first playing Ocarina of Time, and happened upon his first Redead. The area was kind of gloomy with little light, so he thought he was looking at a lost townsperson. He ran up to the "townsperson", and this is what happened:

J: "Excuse me, could you tell me where I -"
Redead: "AAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!" *freezes Link and jumps on him*
J: "OHGODWHATSITDOINGGETITOFFOFME!!!!!" *almost dies before he can run away*

In recent years he's been less jumpy, but the scene in Majora's Mask where you run into the music box house and find a hypnotised/mummified man in the basement didn't help. In fact the whole Ikana Canyon chapter didn't sit too well with him.

Going back and playing it now, it's not so scary, but when I first played Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and got to the Shadow Temple, the music scared me. Nowadays, though, it's just mildly unsettling.

*second'd*

When I was young and foolish and more of a wuss, I was so afraid to go in the Shadow Temple for fear of what horrors I might see that I always just stopped playing when I finished the Water Temple.

There's a couple;

-In Halo 3 when the Flood attacks the earth and you listen to a solider that is screaming about how his commander and friends where taken over by said Flood. *shivers*

-Bioshock when I first started playing it, I did not want to get out of the Bioshpere in the begining ;-; Damn Spider Splicers.

-The death of Adam the Clown in Dead Rising, the laughter was seriously unerving. The undead trying to eat you for three days in a mall, no problem, having a clown laugh while he's being cut apart from his own chainsaws...UGH.

XD

Yeah I think there was, but it's very old by now.

Anyway what comes to mind for me first is the long hallway in the Nightmare Shopping Mall in Silent Hill 3 after the scene in the elevator where Heather says "Not even a kid could believe in this" and then you have to encounter four of those double-head dogs (which is the scariest SH3 monster after the Closers imo). Not only the encounter with the dogs in that hallway, but also the musice and noises it makes in the back round. I found it so unsettling because the noises sounded so realistic it all just seem to blend in with reality which got me thinking (and still does from time to time) "What was that noise outside!?" very scary :lost: :schitzo: !

Other parts that freaked me out in Silent Hill 3 was in the Hilltop building with the mannequins and one of the heads falls off and the cooked dog in the nightmare shopping mall  !

As for the Resident Evil series, the part in Resident Evil 2 with the Licker jumping out of the glass window in the RPD freaks me out. Any parts with the Super Lickers near the end of RE2 scare me lol. Also the Hunters freak me out in RE1.

Not necessarily. http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=102316

The burning barn chapter of Condemned is one of the creepiest scenarios I have ever played. No flashlight, no taser, just a burning 2x4 and a bunch of angry bad guys.

Seconding Roi's nomination of the final battle from EarthBound. I love how that game doesn't really take itself seriously until you hit that point...and then delivers one of the scariest RPG final battles ever.

I'm also afraid of those damn ReDeads from Ocarina of Time. Not so much with the Gibdos...because at least with those you can't see their faces. I still refuse to replay that game again because I'm scared of the Shadow Temple and the well.

I don't play Fatal Frame myself, but I have a friend who claims he played through the first one in one night because he was too terrified to put it down. :toothy:

ummm can i say a whole video game as my moment? XD F.E.A.R. scared me sh*tless.....like literally. While playing on a huge screen with surround sound at 3 in the morning by myself in an empty house in the dark on hard for that matter...well yea i guess i was asking for that XDD the part where your climbing down the ladder, u turn around and there she is! u scurry down the ladder only to find another unkillable thing so u climb back up thinking that ur between two undefeatable beings only to realize that they disintegrete into a thick bloody mist in front of you ......yea lets just say that people arent scared of little girls with hair covering their face for nothing

that game scared me to when that little girl would come out of nowhere. and those guys that jumped all over the place and where invisible scared me so bad the 1st time i seen them
