View Full Version : Besides any FFs or KH, What is Your Favorite Squaresoft/SquareEnix Game?

I thought this would be a rather interesting discussion since just about everyone's favorite game by Squaresoft or SquarEnix would most likely be any of the Final Fantasys or Kingdom Hearts games. But besides those popular series' what is everyones favorite video game by SquareSoft or SquarEnix? There are plenty of them.

Mine will always be Parasite Eve and Paraiste Eve 2 . Arguably one of the most under rated Squaresoft games ever imo.

Super Mario RPG. It doesn't even need the not-counting-FF/KH disclaimer, it's just a really great game, IMO better than anything else produced by Square or Enix. Though I am willing to take into account Chronotrigger as a worthy opponent to SMRPG.

Third place goes to Bust-a-Groove.

Currently:

Dragon Quest Monster - Joker

Oldie:

Either Chrono Trigger or Parasite Eve

Hm. Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger are tops on my list.

Other awesome games include Chrono Cross, Xenogears, The Bouncer.

One Enix game that was made of awesome is Mischief Makers, Enix published the title in Japan, but the game still rocks.

I loved Parasite Eve...and I admit that I loved Einhander.

Star Ocean 3 or Parasite Eve (original).

Threads of Fate/Dew Prism (Squaresoft)
I think it got lost in the sea of FF7 hype, but I still love the game... in fact, playing the demo in a Best Buy when I was a wee lass is what brought me to ask for a PS1 for my birthday... Ah... My first personal video game...

I really like how the two characters were completely different and had different stories, but they intertwined. And then Rod with his buddy Johnny Wolf... *hearts*
It was obvious the creators thought it would do better... The ending screams for a sequel.

The main character is like a base for Sora xD.

Xenogears, my favorite JRPG of all-time.

Brave Fencer Mushashi. The first one, not that abortion of a remake they did a few years ago.

Radiata Stories. X3 I really need to buy it. . .I loved the fact that I could just stalk people for days on end and never worry about the storyline. Kicking people was also fun. The storyline was really cool, too - appealed to my secret fantasy nerd. ^^

I'm going to cheat and expand greatly on my selection range, because, well... Too many to choose from.

Current SquareEnix: Subarashiki Kono Sekai/It's a Wonderful World/World Ends with You (Too many damn LONG names for it).
Runner up: Project Sylpheed.

Mid-gen Square: Einhander
Mid-gen Enix: Mischief Makers

Classic Square: Chrono Trigger.
Classic Enix: Star Ocean.

Well, the obvious answer is Chrono Trigger, but for me, it's not besides any KHs, FFs, or RPGs, period. It's easily my favorite RPG of all time, as no game had a better mix of story, characters, music, gameplay, and visual design, and I don't think one ever will again. Fact of the matter is, Chrono Trigger is what RPGs should be all about.

Now, are we discussing games made by Square or Merely published by them? Grandia III was published by Square, but made by Game Arts, for example...not that I'd include it. Great game, but the characters ruined it. But I definitely want to say Xenogears, which had some really great Judeo-Christian myth featured in the game, something I've always been a sucker for. Also, if we're considering Enix to be part of Square-Enix after the merger (something many Square fans forget), I'll say Dragon Quest VIII as well, as it's probably my favorite turn-based RPG on the PS2.

My favorites actually aren't FF or KH. My favorite Squaresoft game is Chrono Trigger.

Other ones I like are Parasite Eve, Super Mario RPG, Xenogears, Threads of Fate, and Front Mission. My all-time favorite is Chrono Trigger, though.

Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve 1, Chrono Trigger, and Radical Dreamers.

I liked Chrono Cross the best. The music was mind-blowing, the graphics were wonderful for the time, and the plot was beautiful. I just wished the world map had been larger.

I would have to say Secret/Legend/Sword of Mana. I adore the Mana series, but it's going waaaay downhill now with Children, Heroes and Dawn of Mana.....ESPECIALLY Dawn. That game made me so angry. But I will forever love the old school Mana games.

Chrono Trigger and Cross are also my faves, as well as Xenogears.

My favorite ENIX game is Star Ocean 2. I am still a bit dissappointed by SquareEnix's Star Ocean 3. I don't know if Square had anything to do with the game I doubt it but they merged after the game release. Anyone else hear about the fourth one that is alleged?

SO4 is a definite, and probably a ps3 exclusive. There's been a number of screenshots released so far btw.

I have to say that I loathe Kingdom Hearts and find Final Fantasy games extremely hit-or-miss.

-Dragon Quest/Warrior I, II, III, VII and VIII.
-Both Parasite Eves.
-Chrono Cross.
-Bushido Blade 1 and 2.
-Grandia 3.

Methinks I'll have to check out Valkyrie Profile.

I never really got into the Final Fantasy series (outside of 1), I've given 7, 10, 11 and 12 a play, and thought them all rubbish, and I've played a few of the dragon quest games, but I have yet to be truly impressed by anything Squeenix.

Bushido Blade! I've forgotten about those games. That fighting game still rocked hard. I just hated the girl in the second one with the gun. Such an annoying pain.

Do go for Valkyrie Profile. I've never played anything quite like it.

DragonQuest is just awesome. Chrono Trigger is up there for me, as well as the Mana series. I have good memories of Bushido Blade and regret that I seem to have lost my copy of it. I've been meaning to check out StarOcean as well.......

Oh man, there is not enough Dragon Quest love in this thread. Then again, there's not enough DQ love outside of Japan in general.

Dragon Quest as a whole is definitely my favorite RPG series ever. I'm currently in love with IV, as the DS remake came out right before I left Japan for winter break. I'm also playing a few of the spinoff games on the side, like Monsters Caravan Heart, Monsters Joker, and Slime Mori Mori. Just because it was my first, VII is probably my favorite, but I also really love VIII as it brought so many new fans into the series.

Also, Rad Racer.

The Bouncer!

The main character is like a base for Sora xD.

That's what I've been saying since I first saw the concept art for Sora! Why don't more people notice that?

For me, it'd be Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and Bushido Blade. I would've loved to have seen another Einhander, also.

I missed the talk about The Bouncer, but man, I really liked that game. I enjoyed going through and powering up the characters.

Toting along the DQ love, I adore Rocket Slime :3

YES. I finally beat Rocket Slime a few months ago after putting it off for unknown reasons. It had a really fun ending and credits sequence. I found the original GBA version (since Rocket Slime is really Slime Mori Mori 2) in a used game shop right before I came home and it's just more of the same cuteness.

How about Rad Racer

Totally called it two posts above yours. XD It was my first Square game!

I loved The Bouncer. Not really my favorite though. I actually had more fun with Ehrgeiz (probably spelled that wrong). But The Bouncer was pretty cool. :)

Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games ever. Secret of Mana is right up there.

I wish SquareEnix would slow down on remaking/porting all the old Final Fantasy games eight million ways and making all these FFVII spin offs and bring back some of their older games to modern consoles. Seriously. I would love to play Chrono Trigger again, but the load times on the PlayStation version make it annoying.
