View Full Version : PS2's Greatest of the Great?

01-07-2008, 09:00 AM
All the game consoles I own are Nintendo, but I'm thinking of getting a PS2 to in order to get Kingdom Hearts. (Saw it at my friend's house, I want it for the Disney characters!! >3<) But I'm not willing to spend $50+ for a gaming system for just two games.

So, as a PS2 owner, what games would I be practically OBLIGATED to own? I don't mean just 'good' games, I mean the undisputed cream of the cream of the crop. On the same level with the Gamecube's Super Smash Brothers Melee, The N64's Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and the NES's original Super Mario Brothers. KH is the only PS2 game I know of, so I need to be told the obvious great greats!

By the way, my favorite genres are action/adventure and platformer, but I play most genres.

So? What's the best the PS2 has to offer?

This is a little tough because I don't always play this genre. The Metal Gear series is a must because it is just cool like that. The Devil May Cry series seems like a good pic for you. I've never tried them but plan to: The Prince of Persia series.

Action/Adventure? Grand Theft Auto would be a safe bet, although they get a ted bit repetitive.

I agree with E.S., Metal Gear Solid 3 (you can play it without prior knowledge) and same with DMC3, though part of me still prefers DMC1 (DMC3 is a prequel so you don't need to know either 1 or the monstrosity known as 2). GTA isn't a bad choice, too. I can just see it not being for everyone.

Disgaea is a cult classic. Same with Okami. Tekken 5 is my favorite fighter on the system, and a pretty good fighter over all. There's a plethora of rhythm games, like DDR and Beatmania (again, not for everyone but if you're into it, why not). And I guess, just to beat the rush, there's also FFXII, but also Rogue Galaxy, Persona 3, and lots and lots and lots of RPG's on the system.

Off the top of my head:

-The Jak Series
-The Rachet and Clank Series
-Beyond Good and Evil
-Indigo Prophecy
-The Shin Megami Taisen Series
-Final Fantasy 10/12 (I didn't like 12, but it wasn't due to the gameplay)
-Dragon Quest 8
-Megaman X8 (It doesn't suck! YAY!)
-The Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Series (Just wait for 3. Best of the original trilogy, comes out in english with japanese dub in april)
-The Super Robot Wars series
-Devil May Cry 1 and 3 (not 2)
-Guitar Hero 1 and 2 (not 3)

etc etc etc, start with that. The PS2 had enough excellent titles to keep you busy for quite some time. Which is why the PS2 (and the PSP incidently) outsells the PS3.

Kingdom Hearts is my favourite series of all time. XD So, as a huge KH fan, these are the games I also enjoy:

Okami (as mentioned before). The graphics are gorgeous and the gameplay is really entertaining. There isn't a rigid storyline - there are things you have to do, yes, but you can wander all over the place if you get stuck. There are a lot of sidequests, like fishing, finding beads, and helping out citizens in need. Mind you, you pretty much get told exactly what to do storyline-wise. It's a really easy game.

Persona 3 (also as mentioned before). This one is a day-by-day dating sim/dungeon crawler cross. You play a Japanese high school student who goes to school, takes exams, and has friends/girlfriends. In addition to working on these relationships, you have to explore the tower known as Tartarus, and gain mastery over Personae while figuring out the mystery behind Port Island's construction. This game is really addictive, simply because of the day-to-day format in addition to the storyline.

I also enjoyed the first Devil May Cry, although I'm still jittery from Fatal Frame 2 and can't handle the background music. XD I can't give reviews on either, though, because it's been a while since I played them and on top of that, I haven't beat them.

Devil May Cry 1/3 (action game with some platformer/rpg elements)
Metal Gear Solid 2/3 (prefer 3 to 2, both are sneaking/shooter games with controls similar to Resident Evil 4, if you have that for the GC or Wii
Tekken 5 (fighting game)
Grand Theft Auto whatever (sandbox style, so not really any plot, just mayhem:))
God of War (similar to Devil May Cry)
Final Fantasy 10/12 (Japanese RPG games)
Ratchet and Clank (straight platformer)

If you've never had any form of a Playstation, you might want to pick up some PS1 games as well- especially the Final Fantasy, series since KH heavily features them.

there is one game that no PS2 library is not complete without: Katamari Damacy. While it has its camera flaws, its still an amazing game. Off the top of my head a list:

Kingdom Hearts II
Zone of the Enders(good underrated game.)
Soul Calibur II or III but be warned: III is not forgiving.
Final Fantasy X

Here is picks for PS2 games that are awesome!

Shadow of the Colosuss! <-- why no one has mentioned this game is still a mystery to me. But its a great game with an awesome mechanic to it.
Odin Sphere <-- Great Side Scrolling Beat them up RPG Game from Atlus.
GrimGrimoure <-- an NIS Game, and possibly one of my least favorites since its like a Starcraft kind of game, and I usually suck at those. The artwork is good though so its forgiving.
Disgaea Series <-- an NIS game that is basically IMHO BETTER than Final Fantasy Tactics.

ANY NIS TACTIC RPG <-- Need I say more?

Fighting games, I'd say Guilty Gear or KoF.

OH! And Suda51's Killer 7!

Viewtiful Joe
Virtua Fighter 4
Guilty Gear
Jak & Daxter
Ratchet & Clank
the MegaTen series (such as Nocturne, Persona, Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner)
Gitaroo Man
Space Channel 5
Destroy All Humans
Soul Calibur
Odin Sphere

That is, besides the obvious (and necessary) choices of Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid, and Okami.

ANY NIS TACTIC RPG <-- Need I say more?

I was going to say the exact same thing. Definitely check out those games.

I like the Devil May Cry series (if they still make the box set, try to find that), the God War games, Silent Hill games, Resident Evil games, Metal Gear Solid games, Final Fantasy (although I personally think they're going downhill, but if you like Kingdom Hearts you'll love these), the new Prince of Persia games, Viewtiful Joe, and Persona 3, just to name a few.

These are the only PS2 games I would give a 10/10:

-Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
-Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
-Kingdom Hearts II
-Shadow of the Collossus

These are games that come close:

-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (makes the others feel obsolete, it's your call whether or not you want to play them first or not)
-Final Fantasy XII
-Resident Evil 4 (if you haven't played it yet)
-Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter

There are other PS2 games worth checking out, but these define the system for me. They're worth looking into.

Since nobody has mentioned it yet I'm going to have to recommend God Hand.

The games I'd suggest would probably have to be:

Metal Gear Seris - if you get 2, you'll need to play 1 (for ps1) to understand some of the stuff thats going on, but with 3 as mentioned earlier, you don't need any prior knowledge of the other two, but it helps.

The Warriors - A great, yet not really well known game, its an action/adven. about a young gang in NYC during the late 1970's.

Any GTA game - GTA: San Andreas probably has the best gameplay but that depends on the players. I find that Vice City has the most enjoying story.

Downhill Domination - A mountain bike racing game where you have to go down these huge courses and you can attack the other riders with punches, kicks, sticks, etc. More of game to play with friends because its single gameplay starts losing its luster after the main career mode.

Final Fantasy "-" - pretty much the epitome of rpg to some. Anyone will do, and their all good regardless of which system its on.

Time Crisis"-" - It doesn't matter which one you get, TC3 has more gameplay then 2 but can be alot harder to those inexperienced then those who played earlier ones, TC2 is probably the way to go.

The legend of Dragoon - Its a PS1 game but it's an amazing rpg with a unique attack system not present in others. It has a nice stoy and pretty good non-mainstream following. A very Nice cult classic.

Thats all I got at the moment because I don't know what genre types you want but those are some games to look up and see if they fill your appetite.

I agree with the Shin Megami Tensei games- I have all the ones for PS2 and it's a really good series. Get them, you won't regret it.

I haven't seen anyone mention Suikoden! (Well... 4 kind of sucks because of the tedium at sea... but 3 and 5 are really good! You're not going to find #2 cheap though, which sucks because imo it's the best one.)

If you don't buy Star Ocean till the end of time... I don't know. XD It's another really good one. And when I use the word good with any of these games, it's because I don't want to go off on some fangirl tangent. It's one of those 60-100 hour games where you can just kill time making items to beat enemies to death with. =3 weapon + 1000 = <3

Castlevania for the PS2- Lament of Innocence is a little more meh, but Curse of Darkness is just... god. Go get it. If you like 3-D hack and slash. If you play Devil may cry you have no excuse. I'm looking at you!

Do not get the sequal to Brave Fencer Musashi, it sucks. Feel free to get Brave Fencer Musashi (PS1) because it is a game that will forever live on as a playstation achievement. *tears*

I saw someone mention Odin Sphere and I so agree. It's 2D and it was the game of choice for the year... can't remember which. That should SAY something. XD Beautiful game and it's just addicting.

ALL of the Breath of Fire games are good (well, some ppl dislike 4) but the only one on PS2 is 5. It's slightly dark, and you really have to ponder it to actually get how much so, but you can continue your save x amount of times to get items and new scenes you might have missed before. And there's an ant colony you raise to eventually do a dungeon with (I think) 100 floors for sweet items, what's not to love?!

Devil may cry, etc etc etc. I didn't see any bad suggestions on here. The Final Fantasy games are a little over rated imo but they're still pretty good, and you can even get 12 for $20 now. XD
