What do you all think of cosplaying as one of your own original characters/costumes? Personally, i have nothing againts it, and i encourage it, and plan on crossplaying as an original drawing, i'll attach the pic later. What are your views?

I find it to be a great idea, really ^_^; No matter how extravagant it is. This is coming from someone who intends on writing creatively for a living, and loves making up her own characters...so...I don't really know what others will think of it. So far I've done two of my own character's outfits either because I wanted to or it would work really well for a specific event I've attended. However, if someone's the type who wants a lot of attention and pictures at cons..I'd say dressing as your original character wouldn't be the best idea, unless it was near Yaya's Fire Fairy quality.
Just my thoughts. And above all, dress as whatever character you like, your own ideas or others, because you like it!

There's a thread about this in the 'Other Costumes' forums.
I like it! It's wonderful seeing peoples own creations. It shows creativity and originality. I write original stories and would cosplay my characters in a heartbeat

http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6271 heres the thread about original costumes ^^
and heres one about original costumes to Otakon
I really do like original costume becaus ethey let you be as creative as you want. I dont like original designs tha are like a pair of jeans and a tshirt with kitty ears.. ^^;;; i dont thik thats putting in alot of effort. But right now Im working on an EGL outfit and its pretty complex, kinda gettin on my nerves now lol, and im helping my friends with an original kitty costume. I also think theyre great for proms lol My friend just did one of Evilchiis designs for her prom dress so hopefully i can get pics of it soon XD I wanna see it! lol
So have fun creating your own designs, but dont half-arse them ^.~

I've always wanted to cosplay as an original character. I think it's really creative and if worn to a con there's bound to be people that'll take pictures of you anyway ^_^.

I've done one at Otakon last year (a catgirl in a long, purple medieval dress) and Katsucon (catgirl in oriental emerald green dress w/ a Digi Charat fan) and recieved a lot of good compliments for the costume and originality. However, the downside is that you don't gain much attention, people don't recognize you and you don't get to have pictures taken UNLESS your costume is very eye catching and creative.
06-09-2003, 07:59 PM
I think original characters are awesome, I plan on doing a catgirl costume soon, the only downside is at Sugoicon (the ONLY local con around here), original characters don't qualify for contests.....but hey, prizes are not my main cosplay motivation anyway!
06-09-2003, 08:01 PM
^ thats a good point.. lol I think cons should have an original character contest too... well big cons! Thatd be soo fun
06-09-2003, 08:25 PM
>D But how could they possibly choose a winner if so many outfits would turn out so beautiful?
It would be neat though, to have a photoshoot at a con with JUST originals..it would be like a large fashion show or shoot, something around those lines, but still interesting since all the costumes would be so unique ^_^
06-09-2003, 08:38 PM
^ yeah I think were trying to do one at Otakon... its on one of the threads I linked >.<

I'd join if we had one next year.....-.- im swamped....hell i dunno if i could fit it in NEXT year..o.O; i have 6 for next year
06-09-2003, 11:49 PM
i've been one original character...at Otakon '02....i was Punk Lupin....got my picture taken a few times and some people even knew who i was!
06-23-2003, 03:09 AM
lol my friends sometimes cosplay in oringal costumes and say were from some fake made up manga... and people... act like they have read it. " oh ya iv read that manga you look just like her!"
06-23-2003, 06:52 AM
That's what I want to do (my own characters), I think it is great because you won't see any copies of yourself (Ex. I go to a con dressed as Cloud, and I see 3-4 other Clouds)
And also no one will have a better costume of the same character :P so you will get all the attention :P
06-23-2003, 07:06 AM
I really like the idea. I actually designed several characters but the female character I designed for myself has somewhat a complicated and sexy design. But someday..hopefully someday, i could cosplay as her...or maybe I'll end up cosplaying the bishie guy I made O_o;;
06-23-2003, 10:46 AM
Out of the three cosplay's I have ready for AX, 2 of them are original. ^_^ I have an original chobit and an original team rocket member.
There are sketches in my gallery of both, and pictures of Team Rocket in there too.
Anyway, I think it's funner. I'm soooooooo stressed out about making Dita, but with original costumes.... I can't mess up! Well, not really anyway. ^^;

06-23-2003, 01:55 PM
I hope to do a Kuro Neko Sama cat-boy similar to how Lindz did her cheetah costume. I really want to work on it but at the moment my modeling has just began and I would need a part time job to afford costume materials.
08-28-2003, 06:33 PM
There isnt a singel character in the world that I look like, thats why i love to do OCs most of them are from stories my friend has writen and I have brought the character to life for him, its also eaiser to make them because if you mess up, and the outfit turns out differntly then you expected, no one will notice!
08-28-2003, 06:55 PM
Oh that is why I love doing my own designs!!!
though at ACen this year I was wearing my design and I was mistaken for Nuriko in his blue outfit >.< the pic is in my gallery if anyone cares to see it.
08-29-2003, 09:10 AM
Yeah well, I would personally never crossplay or original character cosplay, but I would certainly love to design original characters for people who wish to cosplay as such! For instance I'm in the process of designing an original Sera Myu soldier for a friend of mine called Sailor Aurora.
09-01-2003, 11:22 AM
i do like at least one orginal character at the cons i go to.... at otakon i did a character from my book i wrote..... ( i has the big axe) hehe
09-02-2003, 07:19 PM
I think it's really fun to be out there cosplaying something orginal, and it's really cool to see other people do it. When you stop and think about it, we're all a little silly for doing this anyways, and these characters "Don't exists" so why should original cosplay be any different? I haven't done anything truely original yet, but I cosplayed a character from a friends as yet unreleased manga/stori.
09-07-2003, 08:23 PM
I've been thinking of going as an original character. She's a role playing character I've been playing for over 4 years. Personally I can't wait to cosplay as her and what a great way for a newbie to get into the swing of things.
09-11-2003, 08:16 PM
Originals are ok. I just think they have to be eye catching at least to one part. like mine...hmm well i didn't think it was really good but it was "Susumari" lol. I guess oh look wow...a girl in a pink curly wig with a white face and wearing black.
09-15-2003, 09:43 PM
There is nothing wrong with going as on original character in my book, just not for masquerades as things go. I'm going to be making quite a few original character costumes in the next year.
09-16-2003, 03:11 AM
Hooray for original characters! Love to see what people will come up with and how their minds work in putting the details on their own creations!
I'll be doing two original characters at Ani-Magic this year. Well, one my own original and the other an original by Merle-kun. Whee!
CatB: Oh goodness! I can't wait to see what your original designs will be!
09-24-2003, 11:11 PM
I posted on the other thread a long time ago, but here's my two cents here as well...he's my Original character costume. He's a Vampire. It's kinda funny, but the character exsists because of the costume. I saw the shirt and jacket in the Pyramid Collection catalog and was inspired. I've been working on his story for alittle over a year now...
I don't know if you notice it in the pictures, but my eyes are two different colors; the right is gold and the left is charcol grey. Yay for contacts!
*sighs* I kinda miss my hair being that long...*is currently saving up for a wig* these pictures were taken just before I had my hair cut.

I happen to be cosplaying my own character at AnimeNEXT...it's a basic costume, nothing real elaborate. A gothic chick in a black dress with pink skulls, fishnet, ankle-length belted boots, an ankh strung around her neck and pigtails, a dog collar (of course), and a black shirt with armbands and crap.
Oh yes, and fangs, and a pair of devil horns. ^^;; Maybe I can throw on my black wings just for the hell of it.

It's interesting, the difference between the Cosplay community and the older, more established SF/F Costuming community. In the latter, original costumes are just as popular if not more popular than recreation costumes. People come up with elaborate, cool ideas for groups and skits, and spend all year on their costumes. Original costuming is very well-respected there...whereas in the Cosplay world original costumes are not very common...and even when people do them, they're not usually shown on stage or have a lot of time and work put into them.
The advantage of coming up with your own design, of course, is that you can just look at all the fabrics and stuff you have lying around and think "What can I do with this?"...and if something doesn't work or you change your mind about how you want to make something, nobody can tell you it's not accurate. ^_^
I do mostly recreation, but I like to deviate from the 'official' design a bit and use my own creativity for embellishment and things like that. I find it more fun...of course it's easier if you're working on something that has lots of different-looking reference (like Morpheus (http://forums.cosplay.com/costume.php?action=detail&cosid=7562), so you can just pick and choose and make things up if necessary.

I love to cosplay original characters. I'm working on my Aiji Sasayaki costume right now, so all I have is a profile describing the costume, but I plan on pictures after I wear it to A-Kon 15 ^_^ I prefer original characters more than other, since I look nothing like any anime or video game character.
<--That's him right there ^_^
09-30-2003, 12:03 PM
heh i have only one right now but i'm trying to work on it, its in my gallery and costumes list, its my Unknown cosplay, but i want to figure out some more details to it, but till than its in the making, the weapons though i need to think about.
09-30-2003, 01:03 PM
I would love to cosplay an original character of mine someday; I have one in particular in mind that I'm sure I'll do if I can figure out how to make his horns.
I think there ought to be a masquerade somewhere (well, if there is I don't know about it ^^) for original character costumes. A character is a character; just because it's not "commercialized" doesn't make my character Mint any less a character than, say, Inuyasha. I love seeing original costumes!
09-30-2003, 01:17 PM
Personally, I have nothing against Original Cosplay as long as the character had a backstory (through Doujinshi or FanArt or FanFic etc), or lots of efforts had been put into creating it. For the later, that means NO throwing together what u have in your wardrobe in an hour and then calling it Original Cosplay.
I had tried to do a GL Original Cosplays before and am planning to do more. I also have my own Star Wars and LOTR Original Characters (which also falls under OC).
Here in Singapore, there is a little debates on Original Cosplay cause some of those who did OC just put together whatever in their wardrobe in an hour or 2 and call it OC. Some newbies are also doing OC and then calling it XYZ character from ABC Manga/Anime/Game and entered a contest in it. :\
09-30-2003, 01:21 PM
My character, Aiji, has 7-8 years of background, work, and story behind him..is that enough..?
10-04-2003, 12:02 AM
My vampire character has a full history (2000-ish years worth) and I'm currently working out what's happening to him in present day in a story I'm submitting to my school literary Magizine.
Although his costume was put together in a matter of minutes, it's because I was flipping through a catologue at the time. I managed to talk someone into buying the costume for me about 6 months later though. (check out my gallery if you'd like to see it)
10-04-2003, 01:11 AM
I plan to do my own characters... I have Strife Astral KH version lined up mostly & Lyn Drivak from Devil May Cry... There is others... but I haven't gotten around to 'em yet... Jerne may be a possible choice... Not sure... evil yaoi spirit...
10-04-2003, 08:32 AM
Oh! Original costumes! I love them! Whenever I design them, I always have cosplay in mind >:D Especially this one story of mine, it was spawned because I wanted a good reason to design a myriad of elaborate and weird costumes ^_^;;;; I will make them all XD [One day.. O_o;]
10-06-2003, 07:51 PM
Yeah, original costumes are pretty cool. Definetly something different then ones you see from a series or game. I have pics of me doing my on original costume in my photo album.
10-26-2003, 06:26 PM
Though I wonder if anyone looks, or if I just kill these threads...
10-26-2003, 07:14 PM
I put up a picture of an old cosplay I have -- my original character Koikuro's battle outfit. The picture is here (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=90813). In that gallery I have her formal outfit as well. I like to make original concepts on existing characters best though. ^^

Original Costumes ===> Gainax Boy and Gainax Girl
Seek them out and you will know the true power of Gainax. ^_^
11-01-2003, 10:49 PM
Original characters are cool =^^= I plan on cosplaying as a catgirl character of mine (I love the paw gloves that go up past my elbows :D). I have other pics that I've drawn in the past that would look cool as future costumes, too :D Cosplay just seems like more fun with original characters thrown into the mix.

How true... :)

Has anyone noticed opostition against original cosplayers?
As an original costumer some situations are getting quite confusing.
Are we aloud to compete in a regular competition..if so should we? At the same time people are threatinging to totally not allow originals at some cons all together. So where do we go?
Its so awkward sometimes and it would be nice for just a little acceptance with out people getting into such a huge ruccus about " thats not anime its not, you can't". People do not have to let us into a regular competition but it would be nice to have a bit of stage time for the originals..we worked hard too just as regular cosplayers have
