Well, this is another game from Mistwalker for Microsoft's "Japan, Love Us Project." I've been excited about this game for a long time. In the US it's coming out next week on Feb. 12.

Last game, Blue Dragon got hammered in reviews, but ended up being a good game after playing through the first disc.

Reviews are coming in for Lost Odyssey, with a large range of scores.

GameSpy 2.5 out of 5
IGN 8.2 out of 10
IGN AU 8.0 / 10
GameTrailers 8.8 out of 10
GamesRadar 6.0 / 10

From people who have played the game and enjoy jRPGs, it seems to be a SNES like RPG in HD, which is totally my kind of game. Sometimes, it is obvious that alot of these more traditional niche games get the "I'd rather be playing Halo right now than reviewing this game" type of reviews.

The scores are WAY across the board. I think I'll wait for the NeoGAF reaction.

This is one of the games that falls into the category of What-did-we-not-bring-next-gen-systems-to-the-apartment-fold. That being said, I won't get to play this until the summer. I really want to play it, however, as it looks a notch above Blue Dragon as far as development goes.

I will. I liked blue Dragon, it just got too easy towards the end. The challenge never ramps up.

Number 1 reason why it's getting low scores right now = the reading. There's a lot of reading. Like way more than normal. I don't really mind as long as the stories are interesting.

But if they're not, I'll probably end up hating it.

Either way, DMC4 comes first.

Yeah, that was like Folklore for PS3 as well. It got a big range of reviews, but it had alot of reading. People who like the type of game it was really enjoyed, while others just hated it.

SNES and PS1 era games had tons of reading and I didn't mind it that much at all.

YES. I was beginning to think I was the only person interested in this game. Basically, if Sakaguchi and Itagaki didn't hate Sony so much, I wouldn't even have a 360. So games like Lost Odyssey and Ninja Gaiden II are far higher on my list than Devil May Cry 4, and I love me some DMC.
I also liked Blue Dragon quite a bit.

Yep, that's exactly where I stand with the 360 as well. I own it for almost exclusively for those two developers, plus Infinite Undiscovery. I'm an "Outer Rim" 360 owner (not for Gears and Halo). After I played Ninja Gaiden Sigma on PS3 and saw the trailers for LO, I decided I should get a 360 as well. I think Ninja Gaiden Sigma was purposely released for PS3 to get a few PS3 gamers to consider a 360 for NG2.

I dunno. I was impressed when I first saw the game at E3 last year, so I may pick it up. Plus, the team helping Mistwalker (Feelplus) is made up of former Sacnoth employees, who developed Koudelka and its spiritual sequel, the original Shadow Hearts.

Then again, thanks to my awesome Microsoft Retail Zone powerz, I might just wait until it shows up there. Won't cost me anything! (hugs Blue Dragon and Gears of War, which he got through the same way)

1up gave it an 8 and TeamXbox gave it a 8.3. Very good scores for the genre. Apparently it was exposed on Neogaf that the Gamespy guy didn't know how to play the game.

Perhaps the publisher forgot to pay its "advertising bill."

Gamespy has proven itself to be full of utterly immoral hacks time and time again. How anybody trusts their reviews anymore is beyond me...

I've played the game a few hours, and I'm loving it so far!!! These reviewers are becoming less and less credible in my book for this kind of game.

Compared to Mass Effect, the loading times and graphical glitches are not nearly as bad.

I want it so much...How is the VA? music? intro?

It's a wonderful game so far. I got a chance to watch a friend play it tonight and here's my first thoughts on it.

The Intro is wonderful. Although I have seen it online, it changed a bit to add combat and such which brings action to the first few minutes beautifully. The blend between the video sequences and the game play is almost flawless. Its turn based, which I really liked.

Walking through the first few minutes of the game reminded me of FF12 but better. The enviroments are lush and loading times are nice. However, this could be because it has alot more room for such things on XBOX 360.

Character designs are interesting. They remind me of Amano's work brought to life in 3D in a way that the FMVs couldn't fully do in the remakes of FF5 or FF6.

I wanna point out a cool FMV move they do. The split scene. Kinda like in a comic book, they will show one character, another character and then a wide shot of them looking at one another.

The names of items is going to be a hard win over for me. "Healing Medicine" and "Mana Herb" just don't seem to sit well for creative names. But I guess it would be hard coming from working on Final Fantasy to instantly come up with catchy names that are interesting. They may leave that for more important things like weapons. To be honest, I kinda like that idea. It makes names more important.

The music won't wow people I'm afraid. Its beautiful and I loved the opening music alot, but its not catchy and I found myself longing for the signature Final Fantasy music in the background. But it was different and soft. Perhaps more epic music and catchy tunes will grow on me throughout the game.

Some of the characters thus far are a bit on the down side, creation wise. One of the first characters, Gorgon or something along those lines, kinda looks like a pro-wrestler. But its interesting to see a lot more characters looking Asian in nature. The king looking like he could be atop a mountain in Tibet.

They have a cool system in battle mode you can use that reminds me alot of Legends of Dragoon with timing button pushes. Which I wanted to point out cause I can't wait to see how that overall is used.

Sorry my review may see a bit mixed up, but my thoughts overall for the game aren't organized right now, because overall I am excited to see Mistwalker making a game that looks so lovely with some of my favorite components for RPG games. (I'll 2nd the fact that it feels like a SNES game, with just a little more gloss and flare.)

Overall, I am excited to see how it all unfolds.

I'm Loving this game! The story is top notch so far, characters aren't bad, aside from the amnesia bit it's original and well put together. I'm usually not into strategy guides but mine's been way worth it so far. It'll be great not to miss a memory.

I'm really liking the game so far. I'm about 8 hours into the first disc so far, and will be playing more shortly. It's definitely nice to play a new game in a dying breed of games - turned based jRPGs with random battles.

The music doesn't make a huge presence in the game, but the soundtrack is nice none-the-less. I'm still not sure what people are saying about the loading times. It's not unbearable to me. The Unreal Engine 3 does not produce the cleanest looking graphics, but that's about my only complaint. UE3 was more amazing earlier this gen, but after games like Uncharted, my perspective changes.

I don't get the load times complaints either? Mass Effect was way worse and all they did was make fun of the elevator rides.

I can agree on the graphics bit too. I think it they're great for the most part, but it'd be nice to see FMV instead of the in-game models in cut scenes.

I'm on the second disc and it keeps adding to the system with each new character. There's a lot to take in. It's not complex or confusing but abundant. I'm hoping to see something of a "summons" sometime too. I've missed attacks like that. They made a limited use of them in Blue Dragon. Here's to wishing....

I might be the only one here...but I was hugely let down by this game.

While the atmosphere and soundtrack are amazing, the actual in game graphics are terrible...and I mean comparable to PS2 stuff. Also, it's like playing FFX/X2 again...I mean, it feels exactly like it. And 4 discs...I thought this was next-gen, not PS1.

I dunno, I played a few hours into it and traded it in today...couldn't get into it at all.

Your opinion is your opinion, but why do people complain about having to change discs?

Off-topic- Your Master Chief is badass.

I just think we should be beyond that point in the gaming age. It was more-so a general gripe about the 360 not having a next gen disc medium.

And thank you!

Not too far into it, but I'm liking it so far. Yeah, the gameplay is so very 1997, but the graphics, VA, music, and overall production values are keeping me interested.

The interesting thing I've heard from critics of this game is that people who loved FF10 are the ones hating this game the most vehemently. I find that interesting since their combat styles are near identical, save for the emphasis placed upon skill learning and defense in LO.

It's strange that way.

And who said the combat was like FF10(2)'s? It's not. Not at all. Not even close.

The combat isn't, but a lot of the moving around is. There's no overworld, for example.

FFX2 I can see in the "memories" bit, but I Loved FF10 and I'd put LO right up there with it.

I'm really liking this game so far. I have to find some more time to put into it though, because I'm not really that far along at all. I love the battle system. HURRAH for turnbased strategies!!! :bigtu:

This is Next-Gen. You forget, when you start to upgrade everything, you're going to need more room.

Exaggerating much?

No, the in-game content (more specifically the character design) looks terrible (in-game, not cut scenes). I expected a lot more, especially after seeing what's possible with games like Gears of War, DMC, and hell, even Halo, and it doesn't even run in natively in HD. Even in comparison to the RPG competition, both Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon look better than this game, but that can be attributed to the "cartoonish" style so it's probably a moot point and more-so an opinion.

This is Next-Gen. You forget, when you start to upgrade everything, you're going to need more room.

So wait, DVD's are next-gen now? Where have I been these past 8 years? I'm sure glad I didn't buy all that hype about BluRay...

Smart ass. <_<'

Just sayin'. Only so much a disc can hold. Had this of been on the PS3, they could just grab a dual-layered Blu-Ray disc and fit the entire game on one Blu-Ray Disc.

As for the graphics, I can't say awhole lot due to me not owning the game. But from seeing the images, the game looks up to date to me. ^^

Best thing about this game I'd say is that one of the characters looks like Kasumi Chan! X3

Why couldn't they have gotten the girl who did Alex from HL2? They look exactly the same...
