Hey peeps. So I am working on a fullmetal alchemist military costume. I have the pants finished...but I am really stumped on the coat. I am using a Civil War military costume pattern for the base of the jacket. I guess the main problem I am having is building the flap so that it is the right purportion to the rest of the coat and lay correctly and stuff like that. If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome.

I made my military outfit from a civil war pattern too. (Lt. Maria Ross (http://www.cosplay.com/gallery/65746/))

The only part I really needed to alter was the left side front for the flap. The left side comes over the front, the bottom part of the left side should hit the line going from the right breast to the bottom of the jacket.
If your pattern has patterns for both the North and South. Use the North pattern, the front pieces are larger and easier to work with.

My flap I made separately and attached it. It's interfaced so it lays right.

I made the left side bigger then it needed to be and then folded over the top diagonal to get the diagonal line from the collar to the bottom.

I left off the bottom trim of the pattern (if you look at their jackets it would fall just slightly by the belly button, it doesn't cover the waist that well and does raise when they lift their arms. The but cape wasitband fills in the rest)

The Collar and cuffs are not in the pattern but mocked up. I winged it on those.

The jacket was difficult, but the But cape proved harder for me (go figure). My but cape is a separate piece from the paints (mine folds over and secures by velcro, so I can adjust should I gain loose weight in my hips.

Depending on who your going as, Lower ranking officers (LT and below) wear black shirts under their jackets (Lt. Hawkeye wears a turtle neck). Higher ranking officers wear white dress shirts under their jackets (Mustang, Hughes, Armstrong).

Doing this allows you to take your jacket off when eating and if your at a really warm con it keeps you in costume.

Here is the tutorial posted by AVAAntares, a really awsome FMA cosplayer
Military uniform tutorial (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=125985)

If you need any help PM me, I can see what I can help you with.

The Military outfits are awsome, they have pockets and hold up well *if made correctly). I've worn mine to 4 con's and counting, out of my outfits it's my favorite (especially when you get to salute all the other military cosplayers)
