It's a rumor, and not even a verifiable one at this point. This is not to be confused with those artist mockups of a PSP2 that surfaced about 2 weeks ago.

Below is a picture which, right now is believed to be a Sony Ericcson cell phone with PSP capabilities.

http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2008/02/sony-ericsson-psphone-big.jpg

Here are some translations of the text boxes, but not the article itself.

Top box: Between both keyboards there is a 3 inches screen with the same resolution of the PSP (480x272 pixels) which guarantees a good gaming experience. Good as well for movies.

Lower right box: PSP functionalities were replicated in this architecture, making possible that all PSP games can be played. It won't have UMD slot, but it'll have M2 cards instead

Left box: Slide on one side and you'll find a joypad with analog stick for PSP controls. Slide to the other side and a number keyboard will show up enjoying the ergonomy of Sony Ericsson

The article itself claims that it's source hints at a second half 2008 release, llikely November.

BTW, since I'm trying to distinguish this rumor from those PSP2 concept shots, I'll post those as well.

As already stated, the below pics are renders from a PSP fan of what a PSP2 SHOULD look like. These are not from Sony or anyone affiliated with them.

Just to state, sony has killed the rumor that they're making another PSP iteration.

Considering that the PSP slim has skype capabilities, it doesn't make alot of sense for Sony to extend the PSP into their cellphone lines when they can do the same things for free with no effort.

As a business, you should always deny or "no comment" on future hardware. If you admit it, you risk cannibalizing your current sales. There will be another PSP iteration, and if you don't believe that, I don't know what to say. The current PSP will not be Sony's last portable.

I think you misunderstood this rumored product. It's not a PSP with a phone built in. It's a cell phone with limited PSP capabilities. It can't load UMD media, as such, it would likely be highly dependent on the Playstation Store for games. With Amazon going to digitial downloads for games, and the movie industry also going towards digital downloads, a UMD-less PSP could function.

A PSP cell phone, regardless of which part is dominant, is going to happen at some point. Howard Stringer let it slip when he said that the PSP's main competitor now is the iPhone. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it will be a success. The original PSP, when asked the same question, they said the main competitor was the iPod. My PSP STILL can't even make a simple playlist.

Edit: Also, Skype has nothing on a cell phone. Cell phones have broader reception, while Skype requires a wireless hotspot.

I agree pretty much with this, but Stringer's an utter goofball if he thinks that the PSP competes in any way with the iPod yet. It may in a few iterations. I don't know if I'd say if it competes with the iPhone simply because they're really nonexclusive markets. I own both, as an example, and use them for totally different purposes. My iPhone, I use for web-browsing, as a phone (duh! :p), and for watching video. My PSP, I use for gaming. (This is largely due to the fact that I find the video codecs for iPhone much easier to manage). Their crossover is in video but PSPs video market is not really concurrent with iPhones.

Just observations.

If the audio quality is better than the iPhone, I'm getting one. Every person I've ever talked to who has one has sounded like utter rubbish. Apple, get it right, phone FIRST, pretty toy SECOND.

Mine has audio quality equal to any MP3 player that I've owned...

*shrug* But maybe mine's just weird.

There's something woefully wrong with the audio quality of all the newer iPods (which is why I'm so reluctant to replace mine, even though it's broken).
