To early to discuss? I don't think so, the manga has been out for a while.
It should be more known now that it's an anime.

Anyone got any future plans?

For me maybe someday, I don't have anyone planned but I still want to see others take on this series :P

I'd love to cosplay out of this series in the future, the designs are all so awesome~ Maybe I'll end up doing a Shinigami-sama next year.

I've been following the anime as each episode is subbed, and it's pretty good so far. The art is really quite amazing and the voice actors are doing a really great job. (I especially like Soul and Death the Kid). The series has a really great style, and I'll definitely be buying the manga when it released later this year/early 2009 (by Yen Press). Although, my only problems with it are the plot and the fan-service. I'm really hoping that the plot is going to deliver substance (BONES studio's work should not go to waste!), and not just another formulaic shonen series. Some of the fan service is not to my liking (aka Witch Blair), but it IS shonen afterall.
The only character I'm not terribly fond of right now is Black Star. He gets a bit too obnoxious sometimes...and his hair freaks me out a bit.;)

The designs of the characters are really great, and would be great to cosplay from. There was one character in the opening wearing all black, with a black hood, blond hair, devil tail, and dotted tattoos who really caught my eye. I'd bet the manga fans would know who she/he is.

I know exactly what you mean, it does kind of fit into the typical shonen Genre but I really think the characters are interesting and unique. It's kinda rare to have a strong female main character too.
There is alot of fan service, but I don't mind it. And I have a lot of faith in BONES I think they will do the series justice.

The black hood person you were talking about is Medusa, she's one of the bad guys. She's pretty kick ass, I like her powers. The manga is just a little different then the anime so far, but it's still good. It's not drawn all to well in the beginning but it definitely gets better. The style reminds me a lot like King of Bandit Jing, which makes me happy xDD

So far I am planning on either Maka, Death Scythe (Maka's dad), or Dr. Franken Stein.

My decision could change, however, as the series continues... ^_^

Soul Eater! The wacky art and character design was what attracted me to this series. I have only read up to book 2 but basically my friend has gave me too many spoilers so even though I have yet to know Medusa, but I think I already liked her. My friend just made her sounded like the most awesome bad guy in SoulEater. Dx And I really pity poor Stein because he got 'bullied' by Medusa, plus he is my next favorite character after Death. But then Death is just plain love! I just loved his crazy obsession with perfection and symmetry. I have already done a ghetto Death cosplay, but next time round I am going to make his skateboard! I hope I don't crash into anybody....:schitzo:

Lol, for those of you who haven't read the manga, you'll be suprised at the lack of fanservice in the anime.

I already have a Maka cosplay that just needs a few adjustments (New wig, proper boots, better skirt) along with a scythe, but I plan on remaking the scythe as soon as I get a new job.

I'm also planning on doing a Blair cosplay :D

I plan to go as Medusa to Otakon 2008. My best friend is going as Stein. Making that head crank/gear is going to be... interesting to say the least.

My only problem would be finding something to create Medusa's arm markings that washes off easily and won't cause me to break out in some horrible rash.

Well, I just started getting into this series and I really like it's designs. (You can't not love the cute cartoony skulls everywhere.)

As for cosplay I'm taking Maka into consideration and may start making it in the next few months. It's a cute outfit and I've been wanting to make something with a scythe prop for awhile now, so it's perfect for that! I also may make a Dr.Franken Stein for my boyfriend, as he tends to enjoy cosplaying villians and pulls off the mad scientist look rather well. (yeah, I've kinda gotten him hooked on the series too...)

I love soul eater, though I've only been following it as the episodes come out on veoh. I love the art and just the characters in general. They're really involved, right down to their little quirks (i.e. Death the Kid's symmetry thing, Soul wanting to always be cool, Death Sycth wanting to be loved by all, etc.). Nothing like a good quirky characters. This year, for Conneticon, I was thinking of going as someone from D.Gray man, but I might want to go ask Maka and get my friend to go as Soul.

You know what would also be fun? Going as Blaire. ;3 Ah, I hope to do all of those characters at some point.

Augh, the manga/show are SO good :D. I gotta cosplayz from it.

I'm doing Soul (first up for AnimeNEXT), and then somewhere down the line, Black * Star, and probably even Death the Kid, just because they all fit me in different ways and I like them all so much. I've got a bunch of reference pics for Soul's jacket and his shirt (which I've only seen a few times in the manga so far). I think wearing his jacket will be hooot, so I'll need something to wear underneath to cool (hah, get it?) off and still be canon.

Ok after long deliberation I've chosen to do a Mifune costume from otakon, from soul eater. I haven't decide on which version to do yet, I could do anime, first manga apprentice or second manga apprentice, im leaning towards first manga and a splash of the anime. Mainly for the anime part I want to use the sword carrier which seems much more practical. Basically swords in a like box instead of just taped together, which is asking to fail. But since I think it easy im gona make in addition an Angela the witch he protects doll to accompany me it should be super cute, unless I fail. Anyone think either version is cooler then the other basicly either green pants, with a white dress shirt and brown trench coat or white long sleeve shirt with jeans and the same jacket or the small white one from vol 11 cover?

Also anyone going to Otakon want to do a photo shoot for Soul Eater or know of one already being planned?

I was thinking of doing a medusa costume and I know she has a tattoo on her arm os a snake type thing. I have a friend who does amazing henna work, and I think that would be better than using make up for it. What do you guys think?

Also, Chrona.... I'm not quite sure how to even begin going about that. I'm almost done with my Maka costume, the only problem is finding that darn sweater vest. Everything else I know exactly where to get it from.

yeah that is tricky, from what I can gather I believe the top half is very tight fitting or body forming but the lower half with alot slack, id think like sweat pants but with more slack around the knee to ankle area with note to the butt tail lol the hood is a little tricky sticking out in the back instead of the top like a normal hood

Today I embark upon my journey to start my Medusa costume. I'm thinking for her pants, to just buy UFO's. They have that puffy effect and I can tuck away the strings and remove the UFO label on them. The pants are what's confusing me. I'm not sure how to start that at all.

I'm new to cosplay but this year I'm heading for AnimeNEXT, Otakon and Anime Festival. So after a couple of weeks of thought and stuff I decided to go for cosplaying as Death the Kid (for Otakon and Anime Festival). At first I was thinking of going as Dr. Stein but I'm 4'10'' so I would look kind of silly~ XD

But yeah, I kind of have an idea where to start but my two concerns are:
1.) The hair: I have short, black hair so I don't know if I should just do the white stripes and call it a day or buy a wig.
2.) That skull tie thing: I have no idea how I am going to make it. Any tips on that one?

1)As an expert bleacher (my hair has undergone it many times) I can say with confidence that bleaching your hair is a big change, and if it's done wrong it'll muss up your hair quite a bit. You might want to think about that before jumping in. black hair bleaches completely white, so unless you're willing to stick with that style I'd suggest against it. You could dye it back black, but that's a whole big mess too. Black dye gets EVERYWHERE.

2) I think you could do it with clay and velcro or a piece of string. You need baking clay, form the face and bake it. You can just use white clay and then use a marker to draw on the nose and eyes, but you can make indentations for them to color in. With the velcro, you can glue one piece on to the back of the clay and sew or glue the other piece onto the shirt where you would want it to be. With the string, you can form a loop in the top of the clay before you bake it and make a necklace out of it, just tie the sting tight so it ends up being more of a choker than a necklace, and after, you can wear it around any time, like an actual necklace. :3

My Blair hat is pretty much done now:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g196/MPL_AX/Hat003-1.jpg

It was actually very ridiculously easy to make. If anyone who is thinking about cosplaying Blair is interested I got the hat base from this shop:
http://www.lynchs.com/item--Witch-Hat-Cobweb-Witch-Hat--2123.html

You will have to reshape it (It comes flat and the brim is sorta wonky), cut off all the junk, stuff it (it won't stand on its own), and then make the white band for it. Very simple though.

Hi there everyone :) Thought since I saw some people pondering a way to get the stripes in Kid's hair I'd share my method. I taped of the stripes with painters tape and then colored them in with a silver paint pen. It actually work pretty well, and the stripes didn't end up all crusty like with spray paint. It took a little while, but compared to sharpie-ing an entire wig? It was nothing. And in contrast to the black, the silver actually looks white. Sadly, I don't have a working camera so I couldn't take a picture. Bleh. Technology. I hate it.

I'm liking the series already. I'm thinking of cosplay as Death the kid. I have a suit jacket that looks similiar to his, but it's like a long coat with splits. What I need is white strips. I'm wondering as to what kind of white strips can I use that won't damage the fabric.

Haha, the method I thought of was similar, except I'm taking the time to color the entire wig XD; I did it for my Eureka wig and it wasn't so bad. But I'm going to buy a white wig and use masking tape to place over where I want the stripes to be, then color the rest with black Sharpies.

Wow, your hat looks quite impressive! I really appreciate you sharing this information. I was pondering on exactly how to start making hers. I was going to use a top hat as my base but I think this one maybe more appropriate. May I ask how large the hat is? Is it really over-sized or head appropriate?

Lovely work!

Lovely work!

It is the pefect size for Blair. I have a photobucket link to me wearing it before I made the white band. I would post it here but apparently everytime I post a link on this forum it puts my post into limbo and it doesn't show up for a day or two. (Probably to cut down on spam which I appreciate)

Also if you would like to see the shoes I am going to wear I can share that as well. I'll send you a pm with the info. :) All the boots will basically need are boot covers.

I would think the fake arrow approach would work:
Example (http://www.dressingupboxonline.co.uk/images/products/1gj005_sm.jpg).
Then you can just attach the screw to each end instead of the arrow. I know I made one of these for my cousin and we used a coat hanger I straightened, so that should work too. Then you can just paint the wire the color of your hair or wig and hide it in there. That's probably how I would tackle it.

A little update on my Soul :D -

I've got one of his shirts down (he has like four by my count, I'll be doing his In Utero regular shirt, and the picture of him on the cover for chapter 12: http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/TYBF/?action=view&current=121.jpg).

Anyways, I'm doing a short-sleeve version of his In Utero:http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/aa288/TYBF/?action=view&current=DSC03087.jpg

Next up is jacket, but while that gets done, I had a question for you guys: his hair (quick reference: http://rkzx.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/largeanimepaperscans_soul-eater_yangen306071__thisres__172408.jpg). I'll be using a white New Punk style wig (http://www.voguewigs.com/wb-new-punk.html?productid=wb-new-punk&channelid=FROOG) and spike it up with whatever I can (rubber cement, y/y?). But before I order the wig, do you guys have any suggestions for a possible alternative? I wanna weigh my options before I order it ;D.

My friend went to a thrift store and has found a long black dress coat for the base. (She was lucky and found a womens coat but you may have to go to the men's section and get a trench coat there). She is going to alter and style the coat from there. I suggest doing the same unless you want to sew it from scratch. If you want to do it from scratch I'm sure there is probably a pattern you could use. :D

Alright, so my official decided costume for my Connecticon is going to be the Kishin. One problem though. I have to wrap my face with scarves. Anyone have a suggestion of what kind of material I can use that won't suffocate me or make me super hot to the point where I pass out, because Connecticon is in august and it's going to be hot. Plus, how to I get them to not unravel. Here is a reference picture.

I kind of need advice how to go about the entire costume. :\ HALP?

There's gauze but that might be too light. It may work if enough is layered.

Probably something lightweight and somewhat see through would work for the ones around the face. (they'll look less see through combined with the others)

There's silk but that can be way too expensive.. but I know there's other lightweight, see-through types of fabric. They will probably be the easiest to breathe through.
I think Linen is supposed to be lightweight as well.
Rayon may also be.
I'm sure there are other types if you look.

Just go to a fabric store and get a few yards of fabric for the scarves; it appears that they extend outward from the mask so you'd need a couple long ones anyway.

Also, wrap them loosely around you're face so there is some space between the scarves and your mouth. (for airflow)

As for not unraveling, you could sew specific spots that will be hidden. Small single stitches, with thread the same color of the fabric, could work just to hold it in place with the rest of the fabric.

There might be glues you could use but I'd be afraid of getting a glue that interferes with breathing. You could also instead glue down in a couple spots that might be hidden but there might also be a problem of strange gathering of fabric or the fabric looking a different color. If you use a glue, it might be best to use an archival glue like Yes Glue. It won't discolor over years like other glues.

You could make it slips over and have a single piece that pull the fabric tighter to your face.

The Rayon may be my best bet. As for gluing/sewing, I'm wearing it for three days so sewing it will only make it more difficult to get on my head the next day. Dx Thanks for your help though, that was really very helpful fabric wise.

Anyways, I'm also looking for suggestions on the wig some kinda punky wig though ya?

You probably want to start with a wig that is already somewhat spikey. I suggest one of these.

http://amphigory.com/wigs_punky.html
http://amphigory.com/wigs_s_new_punk.html

But keep in mind that the fibers in most pre-spiked wigs tends to be stiff and crinkly to help hold the shape. If that bothers you (it bothers me.), then you should look into getting a regular wig and then spiking it on your own. Like these:

http://www.cosworx.com/product.php?productid=26258&cat=2487&page=1
http://cgi.ebay.com/White-Natural-Flip-Cosplay-Short-Wigs-2B-01_W0QQitemZ120273663277QQihZ002QQcategoryZ60188QQ tcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Either way, styling the wig would be necessary. None of the wigs I've found would look like Soul's hair straight from the box. If you need advise on the styling, feel free to PM or IM me about it.

Thanks guys, for all the compliments! I'll try not to sweat the heels, then. (:crylaugh:?)

Kasy_C.: All the white parts are white pleather or leather-textured vinyl. I found it in the back of Joann Fabric, near the home decor fabric. Y'know... craft foam would have worked perfectly well and I wouldn't have needed to finished the edges. -_- But pleather comes in huge rolls, though (55 inches wide!) and it only cost $10 a yard. For 10 inches, I didn't even bother with the coupon. =O You can tell your friend that hot glue works like a charm on pleather. It was a (nearly) no-sew project for me! All the edges, like on the belts, were folded back and glued down. The "metal" parts are Paperclay, sanded like crazy.

A friend told me Kid's guns are personalized replicas of a very popular gun... ah, the ones Nicolas Cage had in Face Off. xD They definitely have an Airsoft model of it, but gutted Airsofts are now banned from Otakon, blah blah blah. You could probably use it for a mold, if you're up to the job. That way, you can get two perfectly symmetrical guns <3 /rant

What you can do is when you're molding the clay, find something in the shape of a small triangle or use a small object to press the section of the clay down where the design should be. I think that would look better, honestly.

Also, you should try sanding it to make it smooth. It just looks a little rough to me.

In my brain, there are two ways to do this well.

1. Get a white wig and dye every part except the stripes black. (Very time consuming.)
2. Get a black wig and white extensions and sew the extensions into the wig to get the stripes.

Which options sounds better to you? I can help you find a wig accordingly.

Miyabi-
06-24-2008, 11:03 PM
Number one is not only time consuming but dying a white wig black can be kind of hard since sometimes it can show up with a slight greenish tinge to it (and it fades after a while). I learned this when coloring my Hatsuharu wig. ^_^

Number two would be the better and less time consuming option. However you'd have to weave the hair through the top of the wig since Kidd's stripes are right there on top.
There's a thread for this in the wig section where a few of us have been tossing ideas around!

After cutting it to the proper length, I gelled down the one side with a very thin coat of Elmer's clear school glue (I use this for practicaly all my wig styling. You can also buy specific "hair glue" but I'm cheap!) I measured and taped off the stripes and painted them in with acrylic paint. It really doesn't look nearly as bad as it sounds like it would! I'll post pictures when I finish it.

Thanks everyone for the help!
But seeing as its not me thats going to be styling it (or at least I think so; I'll probably have to help him anyways), probably the most easy and maybe cheap way to do the stripes is the best since neither he nor I have any wig styling experience.

So I have decided that my Blair costume isn't going to make it in time for AX this year which was a very depressing realization for me.

I only lack about 3 pieces but I realized I hit my sewing "wall" so to speak in that I don't have the sewing skill needed to finish off the costume. It is pretty frustrating since all that I need to figure out is my boot cover (I have to make my boots thigh high), the skirt (has to have wire sewn in and figure out how to attach to the top of the skirt), and the finishing touches to the sleeveless sleeves.

But no matter how many times I stare at it or read a sewing book I can't figure it out on my own and currently all my friends who sew are just to busy to help me out.

I'm frustrated over it because they seem like such simple things and I have at least 40 hours to work on it (with out pulling all nighters) before the convention but I just can't seem to make it all come together.

I'm going to take a step back I guess and try to get some sewing lessons in over the summer so I can understand some of the concepts. I'll post my progress on them as it happens but at least I have plenty of time now to make it perfect.

*disappointed in herself though*

I'm throwing together a Maka cosplay for AnimeFest in August/September, and am trying to convince my friend to cosplay Blair. Ours will both be kind of ghetto cosplays, as there will be no (or minimal) sewing involved. But I found a leather trench coat and a shirt with a sweater vest already attached at Goodwill (and the sleeves of the shirt are actually long enough that I can fold the cuffs over the arms of the coat).

Does anyone know where I can find a cheap skirt, though? Searches on google bring up full costumes or $40 skirts, which is not what I'm looking for.

I would go with a twist. To do that, I think you just twist each piece first, then twist the two pieces together.

Uhm sorry to sound lame but... how would I go about keeping the twists in place?

Well, I'll sound equally as lame (or lamer) because I have no idea. I'd think a lot of hairspray and and heat would do the trick, but most of my ideas are only half-cooked theories. Sorry. ;_;

Hey, I didn't know until today that you were doing Medusa! I'll look forward to it.

Why don't you wrap extensions around the longer front strips? That's what I am doing. I kept the hair I cut off from the back of my wig and am sewing it together to create a weft that I will them tie around the front and attach it. It doesn't look like her hair is braided to me though...it looks like it is twisted...and I could figure a way to twist it and still have it sit correctly without it being a separate piece. A possibility?

I think if you buy an extension of the same color twist it and then attach it that would look good and be pretty simple.

I've been super ambitious on my costume this week! Almost done (ecept the guns, but that's another story...)

Here's my wig so far: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1586450/ I may need to do another coat on the stripes and I can't get it to curl out in the back. The glue/paint combination made the wig really stiff, but I guess that's for the better. If the hair moved around and got messy it would totaly mess up the stripes!

For the flip in the back, you could add extensions just to the back bottom.

There aren't too many good pictures of him really. I find you're better off watching the anime and taking screen shots. Or search deviant art. You may be able to find a decent reference there too. I wouldn't rely on photobucket though. I never found anything there that was good. Again, screen shots would be your best bet. It's the actual thing, so no fan art additives. Hope that helps.

I feel your pain with the wig. D: I'm making my own medusa wig but I have this feeling I'm going to screw up. I've never cut a wig before in my life. This would only be the second costume I'm putting together. The first one, I didn't have to do too much to the wig except separate it into sections. *does the panic dance* I have this overwhelming feeling that I'm going to screw up.

Ha ha... yes I have noticed there are very few pictures of him. Thanks for the advice, I think I will screen shot the anime for him.

I do hope your wig turns out well. And yes The only time I had to mess with a wig was for my Sauske Cosplay and that required me cutting up a curly geisha wig and try and make it straight... Hey, everyone =D

I'm going to do my best for Maka. It's ok if I don't have her coat right? =( and her scythe?...Since Tybalt will be my scythe =D Will I still be recognizable? =(

I want to attempt doing the boots correctly even though I have such a short time before Otakon but how can I do the boots?
Cause I also have another cosplay that would need same boots just diff styling of white and I'm sure I can do a Maka on Friday so I want to be able to change it easy and fast(use double sided tape? D= Don't think it's gonna be too durable =\) for the next day of the other cosplay.
I'm not keen on bringing two pairs of boots. It might be too much luggage. If I have to, I'll bring two pairs.

But yeah, how can I do the pattern on the boots? Using what material, I mean?

And will I get stoned if I'm not able to bring accurate boots and wear school schools instead? =(

I'll do my best to do the coat also but if I can't, does she wear gloves with her outfit sans coat?

If the rest of the costume is good enough, I'm sure it would be recognizable without the coat so try your hardest! :O

For the boots, you could make the white parts out of craft foam and use elastic to fit it temporarily onto the boots. But yeah, definitely try for boots because I don't think school shoes would look nearly as nice (or accurate).

I'll be working on Death the Kid soon ^^ I'm kind of wondering if whether acrylic paint would be best for his stripes, or if anyone else has found a cleaner-looking method for it. I was also wondering if anyone else has tried the sharpie-dye method and just dyed it black and leaving the stripes white from the original color of the wig. I would like to see someone try dying a white wig or using wefts for the stripes. I, personaly, couldn't figure out how to get that to work, but I wonder how it would look. My fear was, that no matter how well you dyed it, the hair would still move. The slightest breaze would entirely mess up the line of the stripes! The acrylic with glue does make the wig look kinda' plasticy, but that hair is not going anywhere!

I'm doing Maka too, but I haven't gotten to that part yet. D= I do have plans though. I think the best way is to make the blade out of papier-mache. (The whole thing is ginormous, so it's almost fated to be heavy or nearing heavy...) I came across thin, thin sheets of foam board sandwiched between posterboard a long time ago. I think it was for science projects or science fair display boards, etc. Those would be perfect if it's still around. The paper covering made it ideal for papier-mache. If you want to keep it light, a long, thin PVC pipe is better for the handle. Those are bendy when 5 or 6 feet long, so watch out. Then again, the weight and feel of wood is pretty nice. -_- i already bought two dowel rods.

Hmmm, I didn't think about when the wig would move out of place. And sharpie-dye doesn't take to hairspray very well (even GOT2B ><;;; ) so it'd be difficult to style extensively anyways.... I guess we'll just have to wait until someone does it. O: Very true ^^ I guess I'll just use acrylic then, hahahaha. Thanks for replying :3

And for Maka's scythe --- I think if you bought wonderflex or used the styrene method, those would be pretty lightweight and easy to work with. I haven't tried making weapons with those, personally, but from what I've seen by my friends their weapons aren't heavy at all :D There's quite a few tutorials on how to make different kinds of weapons using them in the props section. (That's all I know about weapons, sorry ;0; )

Well, it wouldn't dye the wig. It would be putting paint on it. If water got on it (rain, sweat, etc.), it could easily ruin the paint job (though you could never use the wig for another costume anyway).

I'm actually still going to stick up for the acrylic here! All the Kid wigs I've seen so far (including mine) are black wigs with the stripes painted on and, if you do it right, it doesn't look that bad. I definatly wouldn't suggest attepting to dye a whole wig with paint 'cus that would just look nasty! I'd like to see one done the other way around (white wig dyed black except the stripes) but I've never dyed a wig before to know how hard that would be.

Who would have thought one hair style would cause so much debate? I think the character designers just like to challange us!

Hey guys, running in here again to get your opinions on something:

I'm making a wearable-Scythe arm for my Soul for Otakon. I've got a really good plastic base to mold things around, but as far as the actual Scythe-shape goes, do you think cardboard would look decent, or should I go with something more elaborate/expensive, such clay?

I figure I could also use the plastic base I have, give the ship via cardboard, and add a paper-clay upper laying, in order to make it easy to paint with.

Thoughts?

You could try Crayola Model Magic. It's easy to mold and dries light and slightly springy. It's what I used for the top of my Donald wand:

And apparently there is now an official Death the Kid ring:

Another Death the Kid.

I did read the thread and some others, and I have a question about hair gel/mousse? Can you use it with wigs? Also, could I colour a white wig with with one of those large permanent makers, and then use mousse in it? I wouldn't want the hair REALLY stiff, but like another poster said- If the hair blows about and the symmetry of the bangs gets messed up- That's bad. So I'd want it slightly stiff.

Like Nozomi said, Crayola Model Magic. I use it all the time. It can be sanded down so you can get it really smooth which is ideal for Kid.

I wouldn't use mousse on a wig. I've never had a problem with my Aquanet hairspray. If I ever needed anything super stiff (like my Black Star spike), I use urethane glue to hold it. ^^; It's a bad practice but hey, it works for me, and I don't plan on using this wig for anything else. But, yes, you could dye a wig with permanent marker. It's called the "sharpie" method.

Yeah that's pretty much, sorry, it's a little hard to describe ;P. It's basically a plastic cylinder that fits snugly over my arm, but it's circular so I can mold any shape over it pretty easily. Then it's the cardboard attached (glue of some kind, probably Gorilla Glue) on the cylinder, which will form the prism-esque shape of the scythe. From there, I don't know if I should leave the cardboard alone, or go ahead and add a small thin layer of paper clay to the outer-cardboard layer, because I've found that acrylic paint comes off looking pretty nicely on the clay and might give it a harder, stronger, and more polished finish than cardboard alone.

Ah okay. Thank you. 8D We don't have sharpies here (as far as I know). I meant more like, is it okay to use the hairspray on the sharpie'd wig? Also on that note, would it be okay to wash the wig? Because permanent markers smell really bad. Or would just hanging it outside to air work?

I really like how the white-wig-coloured-in style looks. But has anyone seen that image of the uh, voice actor of Kid with a girl cosplaying as Kid? It looks like she painted the white stripes? - and it doesn't look bad.

So many questions about Death the Kid wigs! I described how I did mine a few pages back, but I've also heard lots of other ideas that may work even better. I've never dyed with marker or used hair spray on a wig, so I'm not much help there... If you do decide to paint it, I could offer a few tips. I still can't get the back to flip up right!

As for the skull accessories, I used Model Magic for the collar one (I friggen' love that stuff!) and Crayola air dry clay and wire for the rings. The air dry clay is similar to Model Magic, but it has a different consistancy. It's heavyer weight but easyer to sculpt little details into. Here they are: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/1603694/

Ah, alright. I understand now. That should work. But instead of paper clay, you could use poster board or something like that to get the smooth look.

TybaltFlux
07-09-2008, 12:53 AM
That's a really good idea. I had a big fear that by applying such a thin layer of paper clay, as adding a lot would become expensive, I'd risk it cracking and coming off easily. The poster-board would probably give it that same look, if not better.

Paint-wise, what would you recommend for posterboard?

Ah okay.

Well, the thing about the sharpie dye method (well, with my experience .___.;; ) is that when you hairspray and heavily style it, the sharpie comes off a little when it's still wet with hairspray D: but after it dries it's perfectly fine. It doesn't rub off with hairgel as well(well, when I did it atleast - and I was doing a lot a lot a lot of spikes), so as long as you leave it alone and don't rub it you should have no problems. Yes, after you finish dyeing it you need to rinse out the excess dye from the wig. ^^ The color sticks onto the fibers, but sometimes you have to go over some areas to touch up the wig, and then wash it again.

There's a canada option here for currency: http://www.crayolastore.com/international.asp So I guess they'd ship there as well. :D

@Kasy_C and Moon Flow: Thanks. :DD
I think I'll try the white paint (acrylics yeah?) approach first (even though the sharpie method is so so so shiny!), and if I phail at it, I'll try the sharpie method. Thanks for help! ...I'm going to get addicted to this, right? Dx

@jeffypoo: Spray paint in GOD. D: But I only say that because I like the way certain ones smell~ I'm not huffer, they just have a nice scent. >>;; AND they get the job done most of the time. A few sprays, some well placed masking tape and you can have a really realistic looking gun.

@m-AYA: It looks nice thus far. I haven't even bought my wig yet and Connecticon is next month. ._. How do you think you're going to do the twist in the front, because I can't seem to figure it out. I've been experimenting with an old wig I had from a year or two ago.

@opium roses; i'm either going to use a snippet of the hair i cut from the wig to do an independant twist in the front over the hair, or do as cold kittn suggested and purchase extensions. thank god i still have some of my dye left. XD

@cold kittn; thank you! and honestly, for that god-forsaken hat, i might suggest making the shape from paper mache and covering it with something? it doesn't really seem like something you could plausibly sew.

@Opium Roses- Medusa's pants remind me of the pants I wore as Deidara which were actually little boys sweatpants! They were large, so they fit around my waist and were baggy enough, but fell mid calf instead of at the ankles. If this doesn't work for you, you could just find any pants with elastic at the ankles, pull the bottom of the legs up past your knees and let the rest bag over.

@Jeffypoo- I started off looking for toy guns, then found out that even those are outlawed at Otakon! You may want to check con rules before you put too much money into them! I actually did see some cheap ones similar to his at a costume store.

I think it would be really hard to get the stripes right on your own hair. I considered that too, but in the end, a wig just seemed easyer. I used a wig that I already had from another costume that needed a lot cut of off it. Short black wigs arn't too hard to find though.

I'd say go with foamcore. From what I've seen, insulation foam breaks really easily.

No wooden blade for me! ^.^ I think foam should be much lighter, and I have to carry this thing around for four days. XD

I was thinking about following this tutorial to make the scythe:

Anyone know what the best glue/adhesive to use on pleather is? Hot glue worked, but the parts can still be pulled apart relatively easily, so I'm wondering if super glue would be more permanent.

isn't medusa's first outfit all one piece? o_o

also: starting on little!medusa today--i've decided to put off the school nurse costume. as for the white accents on her outfit, i'm probably going to go with white vinyl sewed on, but i'd like it to have that 'puff' to it that hers does. any idea how i could pull that off? i'm choosing vinyl to give it a raised look on it's own, though, so it's fine if it'd be a little too difficult.

and a quick question: for the snakes on her back, should i stuff them with batting or try and stiffen them into tube shapes with interfacing?

Or am I completely missing something here? I'm thinking about adding it detachable later on

I suggested to my friend to use bias tape on his Stein. I would have done it myself if I had time, lol. I serged the top though :O

I'm also doing a medusa, and i was tossing around the same idea. I think I'm going to attach it, I'm pretty sure it's there all the time. You see it in her first appearance on the broom too, when she and Chrona are first introduced.

I think its just the fact that you don't see a lot of full body shots often in the manga XD that's probably why I keep thinking it's not there lol

Yea, that probably doesn't help. xD I'm just going to make a tiny one and let it go from there.

Say, any of the Maka cosplayers tried knitting her sweater vest? Or were they able to find pre-made ones? Or did they just end up sewing them? Just curious. I've been debating asking my friend to help me knit it....but I can already see that ending badly. X3

So just wondering what others have done!

Hey, guys. I don't know who has what, but I have nice sized references for the most of the main characters for anyone who wants or needs them. I've attached five; the rest are here:

Enjoy.

Aa! Thanks a bunch D: I was having such a hard time with reference pictures xD

A quick question (probally have been asked before). With shoes for Soul. What shoe would make a good base? Since, I like using shoe covers.

Thanks a ton~ D:

@sakurahime; i'd probably just custom-paint a pair of black converses, but they wouldn't have the same big, goofy look to them as soul's do. :/

Okay guys, I'm trying to find a good Maka sweater, but I'm having a hard time. There are two I found on eBay that might work, so I need your opinions on which one is better.

1st: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=110274480690

2nd: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=350083561890

I know the first one's not a sweater, but I still think it should work.

If any of you have other suggestions, that'll work too. XD

The second one's cut is closer to Maka's, but the first one has the right color... I think neither one is that good. Have you checked you local Goodwill? You'd be surprised the stuff you can find.

But, if you had to go with one of them, the first one would work better.

I've been to Goodwill a few times already, it's actually where I found my boots and trenchcoat. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything close to Maka's sweater.

It's surprisingly hard to find sleeveless yellow v-neck sweaters that are pullover. ;_;

EDIT: I think this one would work great, if only it were v-neck:

Hey Everyone new member but ive followed this thread for awhile, sometimes by force, and i just wanted to say that ill be trying my best to put up a Mifune costume if i dont get to sidetracked helping my gf with her Maka(luminae). I had noticed that a few people had questions about Kidd's guns and how to work Soul in Scythe form and i believe that i may be able to help

First off to my best knowledge Kidd's guns are Baretta M9s and you can get them fairly cheap as Airsoft guns from internet stores such as this http://shortyusa.com/ the one i found that is perfect is http://www.shortyusa.com/cart/viewitem.html?II=63&UID=1217313159-70.15.100.11&OldLoc=/cart/listcategory.html&RID=1&NL=&CA=1&kiosk=&Show=

And second is that for the blade of Soul foam core actually works really well (i just helped assemble one...ITS HUGE) and everything holds together rock solid

Ok! So I decided to go as Liz, my little sister is going to be Patty (yay Thompson sisters!) and my boyfriend is going as Death the Kid.
My brother already finished his Shinigami-sama cosplay, so we want to finish this for a photoshoot. :3

That would work well if the neck line was different. Have you tried looking for a regular yellow sweater? One you could just cut the sleeves off of?

Wow, while searching eBay for a regular V-neck sweater, I found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/NWT-SEXY-ANN-TAYLOR-LOFT-WHITE-V-NECK-SWEATER-SZ-L_W0QQitemZ320279509607QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item320 279509607). Think that would work?

I know im new but if you have the coat buttoned you actually dont see the top of the sweater all you see is the little triangle above the skirt

I'm planning on doing death scythe and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what color his eyes are. Some people tell me blue but I see them more of a teal/green color...

I think they are the same color as Maka's that teal/green color I mean he is Her father so it makes sense
