Surprised nobody posted this yet.

Tomonobu Itagaki, the creator of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, is leaving Tecmo, citing being unpaid for wages dating back several years.

Its unknown how much of Team Ninja will jump ship with him, and also unsure where he will go. My money's on Microsoft picking him up and giving him a studio.

Also, from what can be currently understood, Tecmo owns the IP rights to Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive.

Tecmo DOES own the rights to ninja gaiden and dead or alive. His leaving pretty much drives the nail in both those series.

But I'm actually quite surprised M$ hasn't jumped all over him in attempts to get him in mistwalker.

I'm not so sure that DOA and NG will be horrible in their next itineration. DOA has been the "boob" fighter for a while now. And considering how well Sigma turned out without his involvement, I'd be willing to bet Yosuke Hayashi, Itagaki's right-hand-man, would be the one taking over, provided he doesn't leave with Itagaki.

Should be noted too how Itagaki crapped on Sigma as recently (in his long list of what seems like statements designed to burn bridges) its entirely possibly the two had a falling-out.

I have very little hope for Tecmo post-Itagaki, unless Tecmo Bowl proves to be amazing. Easy money says that M$ would try to keep him in Japan, happy and paid, but if not, chances are we'll see his stuff on another system sooner or later, most likely Nintendo.

Or maybe Namco will hire him to "Save Tekken".

Doesn't MS own the rights to Ninja gaiden II? I'm hoping he will still be in charge of the DOA series.

Nope. DOA and Ninja Gaiden are both Tecmo properties, and consquently Itagaki will have no part in them.

MS is publishing NG2, but that doesn't mean MS owns the IP, especially considering there have been games like Sigma and Dragon Sword on other consoles.

I'd like to see Itagaki go to Nintendo, just so we can have the hilarity of him and Miyamoto working for the same company. Talk about "The Odd Couple". I can see the promo now. It writes itself!

Wow, I missed that news entirely. Interesting. I was sorta looking forward to Dead or Alive 5, but I guess that isn't possible now. D:

There'll be a DOA5, but Itagaki won't have anything to do with it.

And odds are it'll be multiplatform.

I wonder if that'd make it better or not!

Oh man......

Miyamoto: "Itagaki-san, I would like your help on the new Mario game..."

Itagaki "Is it called "Mario's a big %&%## ^&&$# %^%$ for %&#@#s"? Because that is what he is."

Miyamoto: "....Tell you what, you wanna go see where they make Pokemon games

Itagaki "PIKA PI!"

Why aren't I writing for Kotaku....

Damn. So much for Code Cronus and DOA 5. Development hell I guess? They just won't be the same without Itagaki. Tecmo better get on their knees and beg for him to return with a check waiting for him.

... because as low-brow as that was, it was high art compared to the writing at Kotaku.

I actually agree. The series has been a tad on the stagnant side, and perhaps some fresh blood could bring back some of the excitement.

A journalist friend and I were playing NG2 this past weekend and discussing the whole Itagaki situation. With Metal Gear dropping for the PS Triple this past week, the ideal of this being a HUGE publicity stunt in order to bring attention to MS/NG2 sounds plausable.

Then he linked me an article on how much Tecmo stock fell post Itagaki leaving, and yeah.....thinking it's real again.

As for Team Ninja blood to improve future releases, I hope whoever ends up in charge ends up knowing how to program a decent camera system for future Ninja Gaiden games. It's kinda terrible.

I'm a big Dead or Alive fan and hope that DOA 5 will still be released even though Itagaki resigned fom Tecmo. It's really too bad that he had to do that because Tecmo wouldn't pay him the money they promised him. Cheap bastards. I hope he gets the money he is owed by suing them.
I've been a fan of DOA since the first one came out on the Playstation. My best friend Tenkage-chan got me hooked on it. I am also interested in Ninja Gaiden because it features Hayabusa and Ayane. It looks awesome! Well hopefully all will still be well with these franchises even without Itagaki. The whole situation kinda makes me want to boycott them though:( Oh, well. Not much can be done.

I hope Itagaki got some work done on the new Tecmo Bowl before he left! He was the reason why that franchise was so awesome! *awaiting Tecmo Bowl Kickoff in the fall*

Well, apparently there's a rumor that 36 members of Team Ninja are leaving Tecmo with Itagaki.

Aaaaaaand now the labor leaders at Tecmo have come forward, and are suing the company.

Tecmo looks to be officially sunk, dead in the water. Depending on who gets the IP's, you could see a Ninja Gaiden or DoA game in short order, or never again.

It's over, Tecmo is finished.

Apparently all 300 employees at Tecmo are suing now.

That's too bad.. :lost: At least Ninja Gaiden 2 was a good sequel, although I wish Ryu had gotten a new costume rather than stick to the one he uses in NG1 and DOA..

I enjoyed Dead or Alive 4 but wished there were more costumes available, and even though Dead or Alive Extreme 2 looked good visually, playing the game was a big letdown.

Things will burn if I'm denied Tecmo Bowl for the DS. FOR REAL. Words cannot express how excited I am for that game.

Let's see, Tecmo doesn't have a hand in Fatal Frame IV, does it? I know Grasshopper is developing it, Suda51 is co-directing it, and Nintendo is publishing it, but is anyone from Tecmo working on it? I think the director is the guy who was responsible for the previous games, but I'm not certain.

Yeah, Tecmo is done. Sad thing too, but let's face it: outside of Itagaki's stuff, the company wasn't doing much. When business plummets (and it will) I can see the company liquidating and another company picking them up: Konami and Capcom would be good candidates for this.

I think the possibility of Namco taking a crack at buying the license as well.

Though it'd be interesting to see what would happen if either the tekken franchise developers, or the Virtual Fighter developers took a crack at the DOA series.

This either has the potential to revitalize the DOA series, or help bury it.

You and me both my friend, you and me both. Heh, if Namco picks up DoA, they'll most likely use the Tekken 5 & 6 engine mixed with the DoA engine (this'll be interesting to see) and the game play may not be that bad. We'll see though.

If Tecmo falls, I can totally see Square making a move for their franchises or at least Team Ninja. The president of Sqaure has gone on the record that they need to expand their presence in the gaming global community, and picking up Team Ninja would be a huge boost, especially if they could secure DOA and Ninja Gaiden. Namco/SEGA/Capcom needs to stay the hell away from DOA though, as they have their own series they need to worry about.

In other news, my journalists friend has been sending emails to every contact he has in the Tecmo America branch, and receiving a steady amount of "No Comments", which has me kinda worried a little more about Tecmo Bowl DS.
