View Full Version : Visual Kei Makeup? ^_^

Hey, I noticed on the boards that there are always a ton of questions about visual kei makeup, especially concerning whiteface, blending eyes, and facial manipulation.

I have taken cosmetology in school, specializing in hair and makeup -- and should have taken state board test so I could get my license (but didn't.)

Makeup for VK bands have always stirred controversy with different methods of different cosplayers, but as someone who works w/a VK band, I have a very good idea of how VK bands work when it comes to makeup -- especially stage makeup.

Products
Quality of makeup is a very important thing -- if you buy really ridiculously cheap makeup, you might not end up with the smooth complexion that you were aiming for.

Silver Ash uses MAC product makeup for all of their costume makeup, and Dir en grey seems to favor Shiseido. Every visual rock band I've come across has so far favored a mixture of cream-based foundations, liquid foundations, and powdered for a matte finish.

White Face
White face is always quite tricky being that the consistancy of makeup isn't always smooth -- which is why you need an assortment of brushes and sponges for the perfect finish. Cream base makeup can help with this tremendously. For white face, which Silver Ash does occasionally use, they use MAC cream makeup in Luna (white).

This product is an incredible product and blends very well, spreading over skin wonderfully. Set with powder, it doesn't run or drip, even in the sweatiest of conditions. (I.E. A 2 hour concert.)

Tip: Use an astringent and moisturizer before applying the makeup.

Facial Structure Manipulation
With different foundations in lighter and darker tones than the actual color you're going for, you should be able to alter your jawline, chin, nose, and cheekbones drastically with foundations. To make areas on your face recede, use a darker color and bring out highlights on your face with the lighter, blending well with a sponge.

In Drain Away, Kyo, Die, and Kaoru sport hollowed cheeks by using this method -- as well as accentuation with dark blush/bronzer.

Tip: Putting a white eyeshadow directly under your eyebrow will bring out your eyes more.

More tips to come...

*grin* I'm planning to major in cosmetology! I'm not sure if I can really make a career out of it, but it's certainly more interesting and driving than my other major choices. Two years of experimentation and interest that has only gotten better (worse?) for me.

Eh. Watch me end up working as a typist or clerk, or something after graduating with a BA in cosmetology. x_X;; Just like how my sister majored in fashion design, graduated, and ended up being the financial aid manager at her university. @_@

Back on topic...

Thanks for the facial structure manipulation tips, ne! I've been wondering how I could get rid of my puffy cheeks of doom. ^^

you cant major in cosmetology...
what you do is, you just go to a cosmetology school, get 2000 hours, and then you pass the state board exam and VOILA you have your license. XD

I am very fond of their concealers, foundations, blushes, etc.
I think it's one of the best product lines in the world. The quality of their makeup is incredible, and the best makeup artists love it.

And their brushes are to DIE for. Let's not get started on the brushes!!!

They have a whole spectrum of different colors, shades, and it's just such a great line. I love MAC.

Second runner up would definitely be Lancome, but for those of you on a cheap budget, I recommend Maybelline, Almay, and Max Factor. (However, Cover Girl makes a foundation that's great for you j-rock cosplayers!)

*blinks* There isn't a similar field for it in college though? o_O; I recall my sister telling me I could major in it, or something similar to it... or maybe she's delusional too. x_x

Thankies for your info.
Your info is very helpful.
Hmm I almost forgot that Shiseido
offers white make up products and I'm
using their products like lotion and stuff but no foundation stuff.
I've never thought MAC offers white make up.
I have some of my friends recommending getting all your Visual Kei make up needs at Sephora.

Thanks for the tips. I use only make up that is not tested on animals. Think about the poor cute animals. like Body Shop has make up not tested on animals, it`s expencive but it`s better than to kill animals.

You can major in cosmetology. Here's one program, for example.

hi......i was wondering if anyone one of you know of any mascara that actually curls lashes. i am thinking of getting one, so i hope you guys can give me some feedback on this. i have a friend who told me that the mascara that curls lashes only work for caucasians. i myself am asian.

or do you guys think that using an eyelash curler is still the best way to go??

use an eyelash curle, ALWAYS use an eyelash curler -- caucasian, asian, black, hispanic, whatever. ALWAYS the eyelash curler.

is there any way to hide your eyebrows really well without plucking or shaving or waxing them off? and if not, how to you pencil in a realistic looking eyebrow? i see really real looking eyebrows all the time that are penciled in on jrockers, i dunno how they do it.

Yes, there are a few ways to hide your eyes brows without removing them.

Soaping:
Is one way, and it's easy.
All you do is wet a bar of soap and rub it across your eyebrows in the direction the hair grows, making them lay flat against your skin, and then let them dry. After they are dry cover them in foundation then powder.

For thicker Eyebrows you can use:

Derma Wax
Another way to remove eyebrows is with Derma wax. (Available from most makeup stores.) You smear it on your eyebrows then powder it heavily. If you have really heavy eyebrows then you repeat the procedure. Once your eyebrows have "vanished" you then put foundation on then powder.

By the by, Derma wax is what morticians use to make people look good for funerals.

Nose and Scar Wax

Another way that I found to do it (though maybe a bit messier to remove) is using "nose and scar wax". (I got a 1oz "tin" for 4.50$CDN - enough to make lil devil horns for about 4-6 people) Its the same stuff you can use to make little devil horns, scars, alien forehead ridges (I had some fun making the 'vampire' forehead ridges a la Buffy).
Basically you take a small amount, smear it over your brow, sealant, and then can draw on new brows. It's ~Flesh tone~ which means while it blends well.. you still need make up over top to match your own skin tone. It is also totally reuseable - though you probably wouldn't want to if it had your hair in it.. ew.

Reason I say messier, is because removing it... it might still stick in your hair. I know with the horns it stuck in my hairline a bit... though a bit of moisturizer and care.. and it came out damage-free.

Nose Putty

Powder your eyebrow area first, then apply a super thin layer of nose putty. Layer an equally thin layer of spirit gum. Wait til it dries then powder. Apply makeup over.

Ohmy, thank you for the tips!

Uhm, I noticed you posted something about Dir en grey's Drain Away style makeup...

Could you give me any tips? :3
I'm trying to cosplay as Kyo from the Drain Away PV, and I want to make myself look like Kyo as much as I can.
So not only do I need to style my makeup like his, but I need to use the makeup to my advantage to make it look like I have Kyo's facial structure...

I have a few pictures of what I look like...
