Street Fighter III: Third Strike

For all intents and purposes, it's just about the perfect 2D fighter.

^negative. thats your opinion,if its perfect then why is there still a tier system?you get caught with ONE crouching forward with chun and its a WRAP. and yuns (even though i like him) combo stringsxxgenei-jin makes it TOO easy for folks to dominate your guard. (still love the game though,^_^)

p.s. that wasnt me tryin to start drama, but its just your opinion, not a fact.

my favorites are MvC2,CvS2,garou,SFA3,and shingoku basara cross (that shit is addicitve!masamune datte FTW!)

guilty gear is okay i guess...

The King of Fighters series, especially 97 through 99 for nostalgia's sake. I also really like Soul Calibur, and the Dead or Alive series is my guilty pleasure. I want to get more into Guilty Gear but haven't played it too seriously.

Personally, Rival Schools 2/Project justice. It's a series Capcom really needs to revive. When it came to 3D fighting, Capcom did far better with the Rival schools series then Street Fighter EX. Not to mention the series has some really fun character designs that shouldn't go to waste.

Pocket Fighter: It takes the cute look from the puzzle games, and puts them in a fighting game. It's cute. It's goofy. It's one you can't really be serious with. Also characters morphing into other characters Felicia = mega man, Chun Li = Jill. Not to mention they managed to make Akuma cute.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's Jojo. It's a fighting game. Nuff said.

i also enjoy the Soul Calibur series, and the KOF's as well.

My heart will always hold a soft spot for the Samurai Showdown and SFII: Champion's edition, since those two games were my first fighting games ever. Also the fact that SFII:CE introduced me to my all time favorite video game character ever and the first lady of fighting games, Chun Li. <3

Man, I didn't even think of Pocket Fighter. I love that game. I'm not a huge Street Fighter fan, but I enjoy that (okay it's not really SF) and Street Fighter Alpha 3 quite a bit.

Pocket Fighter really needs to come to a portable. :D

...And of course I failed to mention how much I like just about every fighter SNK ever put out, but hey.

Pocket Fighter is one of those absolute gem of a game that anybody should have in their library.

I picked up the anniversary set for Street fighter that came with 3rd Strike. Which I can see why many put it as one of Capcom's crowning jewel for Street Fighter games.

Another good series that goes under the radar is the Virtual Fighter series.

I also have the Samurai Showdown; Warrior's rage. It's not the strongest game from the SS series. But it's a nice step away from the main story line and jumps it twenty years. They need to do a new 3D Samurai Showdown game and make sure it doesn't suck. :D

I went through a dug up one of my friend's old livejournal post where they composed a list of his and some of his other friend's top ten fighting games.

10. Gundam Battle Assault 2 for the PS1
9. Samurai Shodown Tenkaichi
8. Street Fighter Zero 3 Double Upper
7. Jojo's Bizzare Adventure (DC)
6. Burn! Justice Academy! (aka Project Justice)
5. Garou: Mark of the Wolves
4. Virtua Fighter 5
3. King of Fighters '98
2. CAPCOM VS SNK (DC)
1. Soul Calibur... SPECIFICALLY THE DREAMCAST VERSION!

If it had been just his vote, He'd have had KOF's as #1. Soul Calibur beat out CvS by a two to one vote. they've got a nice info with each selection, but it's a big one and I didn't want to copy and paste the whole thing.

Fatal Fury Special and Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact.
Then there's the coolest thing to ever happen in arcade fighting games: Wavenet Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Play online versus people in other arcades! Too bad it never made it past Chicago location testing in the late 90s :(

How does smash bros not count?

It's more of a brawler with simpler moves and different mechanics. Due to all the differences it's very difficult to put it in the same genre as games like Street Fighter and Tekken, hence why I don't.

It's the same reason why I wouldn't consider games like Fight Night or Smackdown vs. Raw fighting games...there's just two many differences.

No one for Primal Rage? How about Killer Instinct? ;P

I'm actually a big fan of the Tekken series. Tag is possibly my favorite from the series, and in general it's my favorite 3D-fighting series.

I do enjoy CVS2, SF3A, SFII (for the classic appeal), and the MK series (for that same classic appeal) as well. Anyone get a chance to play Battle Fantasia? I got in a few rounds at a con this past summer and it was a lot of fun, despite not knowing exactly what I was doing (aside from the endless half-circles for every other move).

My favorite fighting game is ACTUALLY SPARRING IN REAL LIFE. I like fighting games, but doing the real thing is much more fun and challenging. You should be your favorite fighter, not any character from a video game. With a lot of practice and hard work, you can be MUCH better than any fighting game character.

Yeah I can feel you on that. GG is pretty up there with the best of them with graphics and reaction. Not to mention story...which is hard enough to find in fighting games sometimes. But for some reason I like the ability to change the way I fight with the Arcana's. Gives a bit of versatility.

With the health bar mode, right? Then Smash Bros plays even worse than it already does on full defaults. I just can't classify a game with all the complexity and depth of Final Fight as a "fighting game". It's just a multiplayer brawler. If you want to classify it as a fighting game, then sure, but it's a rather shallow one, and would suffer less criticism for its lack of depth if you just don't put it in the same genre as more sophisticated fighters.

Point taken...there are a lot of really cheap combos that need to be balanced out. Arcana Heart 2 is already on its way in Japan. So hopefully it will make it's way here as well and the game will be a bit more balanced.
