I'm gone for two days, and this is what I miss.

It had previously been reported that the Degeneration trailer at Comic-Con was just a 30-second teaser showing a bunch of zombies invading an airport. This, however, is much more than that.

Regarding the story, here is a brief synopsis taken from IGN:

The "Umbrella Incident" that took place in Raccoon City ended with a missile attack ordered by the government intended to wipe out the deadly zombie virus. Following this catastrophe, the Umbrella Corporation's stock plummeted. This serious blow to the business giant resulted in its complete dissolution. Seven years later, at an airport somewhere in the United States, on an ordinary autumn afternoon, a zombie is unleashed. Now, in an airport beginning to fill with the undead, the horrific disaster is about to repeat itself... Claire Redfield, now a member of an NGO supporting victims of bioterrorism and medical disasters, happens to be in the airport while Leon S. Kennedy comes to the site on a mission to take care of the incident.

Perhaps the best news of all, however, is the fact that Paul Mercier and Alyson Court are returning to reprise their roles as Leon and Claire, respectively.

Finally, here are some screencaps from the trailer:

While it seems awesome, something about it just doesn't seem right. Its almost like the total opposite of the live action movies, but its not any better.

Its hard to explain.

Maybe it's the cg? It's sadly rather lacking when compared to something like, say, Advent Children. It actually looks like they just took a cg cutscene from one of the games and turned it into a full-length movie, really.

This whole thing is news to me.

I love RE but I have to agree, something is lacking. It seemed more action oriented then horror oriented. And I agree about the cg lacking. What's the game play going to be like, I know it won't be like the old REs, capcom has given up on REs being true REs. Will it be like RE4 and 5? I get the feeling it's going to be like dead aim or umbrella chronicles.

I was hoping it wasn't just me who thought the CGI was lacking. The way the characters' faces are designed and the way they move just makes the movie look somewhat dated already. Then again, it could also be the fact that the trailer I saw was a cam version.

Sadly, the survival horror genre is one of those genres that never clicked with me during the PSX's time. While I played most of the Resident Evils, RE4 being the most thoroughly played, none of them impacted me to any real extent. However, I'm really looking forward to this movie. Who knows, maybe it'll rekindle an interest in trying the RE franchise again.

This.

While I'm expecting this thing to be wayyy better than any of the live action RE flicks, I dunno. The game VAs are pretty....terrible to be honest, and the CGI, while it doesnt look god awful, for something that's supposed to be blu-ray, it doesnt even look AC good and that's movies like what, nearly 3 years old from the Japanese release? Kinda worried.

It's a movie, not a game.

ha ha. it's just funny now. I'll still watch it but I give up too.

(I was kinda hoping the gameplay would save it)

The same animation team that did FF VII: AC are doing RE:D. However, I share the same sentiment about the visuals - the people still move like robots and the animation can't hold a candle to Pixar's stuff.

IGN has finally posted their coverage of the Degeneration panel at Comic-Con.

Here are the most interesting details:

-Degeneration will be considered canon (most people assumed it would be, but now we have an official confirmation)

-Wesker may make an appearance in some form (Kobayashi just said we'd have to wait and watch the movie to find out if he would be in it or not as opposed to an outright "yes" or "no")

-when asked if other characters such as Ada, Ashley, and even Tofu (really?) would be in the film, Kobayashi flatly replied, "no"

-the movie will have no connection to RE5

-any possible sequels depend on how well this one does, but they're up for doing more

Didn't look at the article since I was at the panel, but to elaborate on the bullet points...

Well, he said flat out no to "Tofu". When asked about Wesker, he said "please wait for the film's release". Obviously, non-denial leaning towards he's in it. When asked about Ada, he gave a lengthy response about how she was featured in Resident Evil 4 quite a bit already, and that this story in Degeneration was about the reunion of Claire and Leon, not Ada. When they asked about pairings for Leon, he pretty much confirmed Leon is a player who likes to be with different girls, and stated his "bond of trust" with Claire would elevate to the next level in the film. Also, some character named Angela will have a significant role in the film, and that somebody you saw in the latest trailer is directly linked to the T-virus outbreak going on. The game will have no apparent direct link to Resident Evil 5, but both teams are communicating with each other just to make sure things are covered and in line with the overall series plot.

Thanks for the clarifications.

Why is it fans always have to ask about "pairings" of characters at these panels? *facepalm* They asked the same thing about Dante in regards to Trish and Lady in Devil May Cry 4.

I imagine Angela is the blonde chick in the S.R.T. uniform. I suppose she could also be the little girl Claire is seen with, but I'm betting on the former.

And I think it's pretty obvious who the "somebody" linked to the T-Virus outbreak in the trailer is. Capcom isn't exactly subtle.

Yea, it was funny somebody stuck in a "pairing" question. It was a guy who was annoyed at Kobayashi's explanation about Claire and Leon's involvement (how they're going to the "next" level with their bond), as well as Claire's wink at Leon in that one scene - he basically was like "Hey, I thought Ada was Leon's girl, so what's up with that and what Leon told Ashley in RE 4?". That was seriously the best answer ever, though, to piss off shippers.

I'm actually anticipating this quite a bit--as for the CG, I'm actually glad it's not up to Advent Children's level, first because it won't so god-awfully long to release and second, maybe I was just slow, but 90% of Advent Children happened faster than my eyes could track.

Another thing is, it's Resident Evil and I was under the impression that part of the reason people loved the series was because it was far from perfect.

I'm glad they got the original VAs back too, because they are Claire and Leon, and anyone else would have a different take on the characters, and with all the re-casting that goes on in anime these days, it's good to see they're getting a chance to reprise the roles.

Surprised to hear it isn't a direct tie-in with 5, but also relieved that they're putting it in line enough with the games that it will be considered canon--more of that needs to happen with these adaptations IMHO.

And I'm sorry but 'pairing' questions in RE make me laugh--the only canon pairing in any of the games ever is (was) Claire/Steve, and we all know how that ended up.

IGN has posted a video interview with Degeneration's producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, and director, Makoto Kamiya. There isn't really much information regarding the story or characters in the movie. It's more about how they went about making it and Kamiya's input as director. I thought it was pretty interesting. Definitely worth a watch.

Also, the extras for the dvd and BluRay release of the movie have been unveiled:

We've got early Blu-ray specs and extra features to share which include a nod to Resident Evil 5 on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. In addition to a 1.78:1 1080p video transfer and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, expect the following:
Interactive Picture-in-Picture (Blu-ray exclusive)
Trivia Track
The Making of Resident Evil: Degeneration
Character Profiles
Voice Bloopers
Leon Interview
Resident Evil: Degeneration Trailer Collection
Resident Evil: Degeneration Tokyo Game Show Trailer
Resident Evil 5 Video Game Trailer

In all likelihood, the "Leon Interview" is just an interview with Paul Mercier, Leon's voice actor, but I'm really hoping it's actually an interview with Mercier in character as Leon. Now that would be awesome (and hilarious).

Interviewer: So, Claire or Ada?
Leon: Why choose?
