i did a search on the forums and i couldn't find any repeats of this post so here goes...

I'm just curious as to which last name works better for Tifa? I've always gone with Lockheart because this is the way they made it in the US version of FFVII. I've played it since I was nine years old so I'm used to this spelling. BUT I know that they put Lockhart in the Japanese version because of the way it sounds.

So my question is... which version do you prefer and why?

you know, I think I favor lockhart. It makes it sound somewhat foreign which I like. I didn't realize that they changed it like that though between the us and japanese version. interesting.

I stick to the names of the original FFVII as it was released in the US, since that is canon to me. Therefore, Tifa Lockheart is my preference, and Aeris will always be Aeris.

And Lockheart just makes more sense... because the last name was made from how Tifa has so much literally "locked" in her heart. Meh.

Tifa Kickass.

I try to not use her in my final party every time I play through but NO, she has to rock and make me keep using her.

haha I guess she's just magical like that. Tifa has to rock.

That's weird; in my manual it lists her name as "Lockhart", so I've always spelt it that way.
Although I live in the UK, that might be it. Either way I tend to favour Lockhart, and I don't know why. xD

I tend to favor "Lockheart" (not quite sure why but I just do) and the same goes with the spelling for "Aeris" (I dunno why but I never spell it as Aerith). :s

I have usually spelled it as "Lockheart." Just seems better that way.

I will agree with you ten fold on Aerith. Some reason that spelling actually bothers me.

Aerith just sounds so harsh. Aeris is the way I've always referred to her. It's even hard for me to comment on people who cosplay Aeris and I want to say "great Aeris!" and then I see that they put down Aerith as the title, so I correct myself...

Aeris is Aeris. I wish they had used this original spelling for the English versions of the spin-off games. Well, they used Aeris for Final Fantasy Tactics, at least... and on the official FF7 Squaresoft website (at least the US version) she's still listed as Aeris.

Plus I agree, Aeris sounds much nicer. It just fits her so much better, I think... though obviously I'm biased. lol

Though, back to Lockhart vs. Lockheart, apparently on the US FF7 website, she is listed as "Tifa Lockhart"... hmm. It seems that there wasn't a lot of consistency back then.

I wonder why they bothered to change any of the names to begin with. Were they really that worried that kids were too stupid to pronounce "Aerith" properly or wouldn't understand the pun of "Lockhart"?

For Aeris, it's just translation inconsistency. In Japanese, her name is written as "EARISU". But the problem with s in Japanese is that it doubles up as a th sound - depending on the Japanese person, they might lisp all of their s's or none at all. So in the US version, they translated it as "Aeris". Later on, they translated it as "Aerith". I know some people insist that it's supposed to be "Aerith" because it spells like "Earth", but I think "Aeris" could be just as probable considering it's a Latin word for "breath" (alluding to one of her limit breaks). But regardless, as far as I'm concerned, she was Aeris in the original FF7, so that's her name.

For Lockheart... I really don't know. Again, the Japanese language butchers the real name, and obviously "Lockhart" and "Lockheart" are spelled the same phonetically in katakana. Translation inconsistency, and nothing more, I assume.

hmmm. very interesting about Aeris/Aerith. Aerith can still sound like Aeris with a lisp kinda.

kuko-chan: I think the translation was the result of the name change. I don't think they intentionally changed it so people could understand it better. And I'm not quite sure that a pun was actually intended for Lockheart. True, it does explain Tifa's persona, but it would still work as Lockhart.
