I was looking at a couple of American band's sites that I like and I noticed a lot of them seem to do tours in Japan which made me wonder if there were any good J-punk bands out there and as I know as much about Japaness music as fish do sky diving I thought I would ask here. So if you have any sugestions......

Well, I don't know if they're widely popular or not, but I have this Japanese band on this compilation called "A Punk Tribute to Weezer". It was put out by Cleopatra records. The Japanese band on it is called Monkey Pirates. They cover Weezer's song "Island in the Sun" and pull if off pretty well.

Hope this helps.

Jpunk deffinately has it's highs and lows. On the one hand, there are the bands that scream utter nonsense like ROTTEN BANANAS ggrrrrgrrrrgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr again and again, and then there are the moderately decent ones ^^. Ones to check out would be The Blue Hearts, Polysics, Envy, Shaka Labbits, MCM, and B-Dash.

well that kind of depends...which American/English punk bands do you like? I think one of the most popular Japanese Punk band is Shonen Knife.

Don't Forget "Spread Beaver"...I think they qualify, ne?

I have to agree that it really depends on taste...I personally can't think of any J-punk bands that sound anything like the Clash or any old-school punk, if that's what you're looking for.

I have a compilation CD that has a group called Flat Bowl Earth. Don't know what the hell they are saying but they get hype and it does have that worlds-gonna-end-but-let's-dance-anyway feel. Anybody ever heard of them?

so all the J-Punk bands sound like new school punk? seems nobody like old school anymore....then again it would be kinda weird hearing Japanese punk....odd indeed.

Well, Judy and Mary sounds kinda vaguely like the Ramones, but female and Japanese.

But, I have to say, the UK and the USA have produced the BEST punk rock ever. EVER.

BLACK FLAG RULES!

Would Yellow Machinegun count? It's an all girl Japanese group. They're supposed to be underground punk, so I hear.
