I'm trying to put the finishing pieces on my Mello (from Death Note) cosplay before a con I'm going to on the 6th.
What I'm missing is a good rosary.
I'm kind of wanting to make my own,as I don't have a lot of money at the moment.

Does anyone have any good colour references of it? Or tips on how I could make it? Both are EXTREMELY appreciated.

(The only other things I need are gloves, and chocolate ((and possibly better boots, but oh well.)) but I think I have those covered.)

THANK YOU.

And in case you're wondering what a rosary is:

(That's not exactly what Mello's looks like,I think his is red XD)

...Also, I have no idea where I'd find a rosary, as (from what I can tell) they're a Christian thing, and I'm not religious. (or at least, not Christian)

Wow, finding decent screencaps/images of his rosary is hard. .__.

I'm not sure how to make one exactly, but the beads seem to be silver and red, the cross being silver/white. A craft store should have the beads in the colors you need - as for the cross, any store that sells jewelry should have some necklaces with cross pendants on them that you could take off. Or, maybe try making the cross out of air-dry clay, painting it, and make a hole through it so you could string it on the rosary?

O__O THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I have to make this by the 6th, so hopefully I'll have enough time to do that.

it's really easy to make your own. just get the right color beads that are two different sizes, some string (or whatever you want to use), and a cross pendant. you can easily figure out the pattern (i'm a terrible catholic. i don't use the rosary.) i know that for the main part of it, the smaller ones are in sets of ten followed by a large one.

note that if you ARE catholic, it's apparently a sin to wear a real rosary around your neck. yeah i didn't know that either.

Okay.

(XDD I'm not religious, so I wouldn't know that.)

XDD Awesome.

I could possibly ask my friend, but I really want to see if I can make one for myself. Plus my friend might not get me one XD.

In my area, all the larger Catholic churches have a shop attached where one may buy what can generally be referred to as "Catholic supplies". :D Various saint paraphernalia, candles, printed materials, that sort of thing. And rosaries, of course. Lots. The ones you get for free are generally....er. Not very nice-looking. Cheap. As one would expect, really. Better to make your own.

(on the rosaries-as-jewelry front, look at it this way: the rosary is a tool for prayer and meditation. Wearing a tool as a personal ornament looks both odd and silly to the devout. Compare it to a carpenter wearing a screwdriver as jewelry.)

I made my own rosary for my Mello costume, it just didn't feel too respectful using a religious symbol of worship as a prop. I can't say I have any awesome pictures of it, but I just strung up some beads, smaller ones for the bulk of the rosary, and there are some larger ones towards the back (really this only happened because I ran out of beads), and I found a package of various cross charms - which came in handy for the chain on his gun, and just clipped that to the front. I just used some medium gauge wire and made some loops, put the bead on one end of the loop (making sure there's a bit sticking out of the top of the bead) and then the other end of the loop to another loop and bead. Not exactly awesome directions, but I hope it helps a bit.

Its really not hard to figure out the construction, I'm not a jeweler by any means and I like to think my rosary looks pretty alright, and probably only cost me about 7 dollars to make. Hopefully its a bit of help.

But here are a few pictures:

okay so about the religious thing, it's sacrilege to wear one if it isn't for veneration. hehe my brother told me more!

so yeah...like i said. it's easy. it's cheap. and it gives you something to do when you're bored.

By looking at snapshots, I figured out the pattern is 6 small, silverish beads, and one red. Maybe late, but meh xD
