View Full Version : Vinyl...where do I buy it?

I've seen so many beautiful j-rock and anime costumes made with black and red vinyl, so it makes me wonder where people get it.

In my own search for vinyl, the only place I could find to buy it was the local fabric shop. The stuff I got was *okay*, but it was like the upholstery vinyl, so it had an annoying white felty lining. That made it quite thick, so it was more difficult to sew. Also, it was irritating to the skin and stood out if it was visible in any way.

The kind I really wanted was super-shiny, reptile/snake skin black vinyl. But I would be satisfied just to find shiny black vinyl with no lining!

Does anyone know where to get some nice vinyl? Is there an online site somewhere that sells the stuff that I just haven't found yet? Or just some site with a selection of unique fabrics?

Continue your search for vinyl in local fabric stores... much of it *is* upholstery vinyl, (which upsets me a bit... it's so hard to find good quality, shiny vinyl!) but you would be surprised what you find if you dig into what they have in stock.
I also would like to know where on the internet one can find shiny vinyl without lining...
If this helps, the super-shiny stuff is called PVC, (Poly Vinyl Chloride) if you need a specific name.

A site I always suggest looking to http://store.yahoo.com/velvet-fabric/fabricvinyl.html . I found it about a year ago and have been shouting the word ever since lol. I use them all the time. They have awesome quality Pleather, and PVC. And if you buy from them, they send you a letter with samples everytime a Vinyl goes on $2 a yard sale (and that's a good price o__O; *looks at 20 yards of silver pleather sitting in the corner*)

Otherwise keep looking in your local fabric shops. I've only managed to run into good quality stuff once or twice, but that's just my area.

Good luck with your costume!

:::Amazed::: They even have iron-able vinyl! (That cannot be done with pure vinyl or PVC; since it's rubber, it melts under the heat.)
Thank you so much! :::Immediately favorite places link:::

well, if you happen to live near l.a. you can always go downtown to the fashion district. they have like tons of fabric there. when i first went there i was like in fabric heaven. that is where i got my pvc to make my pants. they come in all colors and thickness. the kind i got was super thin(still hella hot). and they have others that is a little thicker, but not upholestry hard....

fashion district?

eep...no. I live very, very far from l.a. in a little old town called Milwaukee. V_V we have nothing like a 'fashion district.' Unless you count the mall?

I'd love to see this fabric heaven someday...

yeah...stretch PVC / garment vinyl is awesome! I haven't had that much luck at actual fabric stores around here for it, but I do like velvetfabrics myself as well. I also really liked the red and black vinyl I've bought from syfabrics on eBay (not that shiny, but a pleasure to sew...and paint! So far, have used it for Lida and Dogun and am using it for my Victor and Kanon...if not even more costumes...it's great, soft, comfortable stuff)

And, if you don't mind the prices, theatrehouse.com has got tons of insane stretch vinyl of many bizarre colors and designs.

Oh, how terrible! I know for certain there is no decent source in Milwaukee for anything useful as I searched relentlessly for 3 1/2 years when I was trapped there. That's how I found out about the good online shops....

OMG the L.A fashion district is godly. o_O;; I luvers it. Well, since you don't live near LA is there any area near you that sells wholesale clothes and such? Places that retailers go to, to get products for their stores? That's where fabric districts are usually located and you can find tons of stuff besides fabric like fringe and buttons. mmmm endless amounts of PVC and vinyl and fur. XD

I doubt there's anything like that in Milwaukee...but maybe Chicago, which I go to a couple times a month anyway.

I'd kinda like to investigate this possiblity of a fashion-district-type-thing in Chicago, but I really don't know who to ask about it. V_V

Are there any Chicagoeans around who have seen such a place??

Um, there really is no such place in Milwaukee...really. Unless it suddenly came into exsistance in about a year... ^_^*
I have to say that I'm not all that familiar with places in the Chicago area for vinyl by itself. I have a nice source for very reasonable vintage, decorative fabrics, but I've been getting all my pvc by the yard online. Of course, check out the Alley district for pre-made clothing you might mutilate.
Also, you might like to post down in the Chicagoland Cosplay Club member's forum regarding this. I think Ayaka might get a field trip going for fabric hunting sometime soon.

ooooh coloured vinyl!

Can somebody tell me wether the purple is light or dark? I need light purple vinyl for my Sarima costume.

ah...good idea about posting on the Chicagoland thingy. I didn't think about having anything to do with them because I feel like I live far from Chicago (despite going there all the time)...

Anyway, yes...I shall go posty on there.

Thanks! *hops away*
