for me, a friend of mine started lisening to this pop style music, i thought to myself"ok, it sounds good, but i liek my rock better. i like my likin park, 311, etc." But after hearing DAI(do as infinity) i was like"wow, good music, catchy tunes." so while i would lisen to DAI at his house, from time to time, he got a another favorite. BoA, and Ayumi. There good, there video's are better than american video's. and its more techno in a way, which i like. So now i liek jpop/jrock. And thast my story. A friends influence. Whats yours?

*Pat pat* 's okay ^^ You're new here and it does get confusing sometimes, 'specially since it doesn't say costumes at the end of this forum title. ^__^

Seriously, why doesn't someone add the word COSTUMES to this forums title???? That would clear a lot of things up...

Its a fun thread, though...I do admit!

What got me into Japanese music was from my dear friends in 95-96. My echange students got me into a lot of various styles and types of music, that I kept getting into more and more different styles. ^_^ Ta daaa....

How I got in to J-rock...

I have been a die hard Final Fantasy fan since I was 11 years old.
So one day I found a picture of Squall and his model Gackt Camui when I was searching for Final Fantasy 8 pictures on kazaa. And I tought "Oh he was pretty, really pretty!!!" And since his name was there I began searching on the net for more pictures and information of him. Then I found out that he was a singer and now I LOVE him. He makes great music. This happend january this year (2003). That's my story on how I got into J-rock!

well it all started with anime soundtracks of course ;)
after i got hooked on konya-wa hurricane from the original BGC series i discovered an interview in an old newtype for the metal band show-ya since they did the closing theme for cleopatra DC. and from there i just kind of expanded, of course it helps to live near a japanese book store that sells/imports cds as well as a japanese video store that rents heyheyhey music champ.

i like do as infinities newer stuff(the more roock oriented) the older R&B stuff was just soso in my book.....but then again i am more into rock and metal and not as much into pop aside from a few jpop groups

I one day stumbled upon a Hamasaki Ayumi site and they had music samples. I listened to "Fly High" and was instantly hooked. I listened to more of her music and I got my friend hooked on her too. After some time she fell into J-rock and slowly pulled me in with Gackt. A Japanese neighbor of mine (older lady) has J-rock videos and offered to let me borrow any of them. Knowing my friend was currently obsessed with Malice Mizer I borrowed one of those (Merveilles) and we watched it. I had heard a couple of songs by them and thought they were "OK" but I'd never really seen them. After that concert I was like "Wow..." and fell in love with them. Then that slowly moved into Dir en Grey, which took time because they were a bit too extreme for me at the moment, but they just grew on me and I'm in love with them! ^_^ Now I'm trying to expand my J-rockness by listening to Baroque, X-Japan, hide, etc. etc...

^^... I saw a Sugizo (is that his name?? From Luna Sea..) fanart by one of the girls at estrigous (estrigious.com) and I thought I would look into the band.. I bought one of their singles CDs and liked it. (I think that was at Otakon 2000) I bought a live Glay CD at Katsucon (2001)
and then I got Dir en Grey's MACABRE CD for Christmas- and that hooked me. XD (now I am a raving fan of visual kei, ha ha ha!)

I started out by hearing "1/3" by Siam Shade when my friend brought a mixed J-rock/J-pop CD over. It was addicting, and after that she introduced me to "Fake" by Janne Da Arc. It was all downhill from there. ^^; I managed to get quite a few of my friends into the J-music scene, too. Some of them hate me for it, but that's just fine on this end.

anime got me into jpop blah blah blah Therefore, I was interested listening to Japanese bands and I was looking through this digimon messageboard i use to go to and there was a post about dir en grey's new look(kisou era) and... it scared me. O.o; Kaoru. Blame him. XD Well, on livejournal my friend posted about them and since I heard of them and I was bored, I did. I listened to embryo and was completely scared. :D Later on, I listened to cage and garden and wee... fell in love.

And they lived happily ever after. The end.

The funny thing is, embryo is now my favourite song.

Well, I know, I could go on forever about how pretty/hot JRock guys are... Including Miyavi, Kyo, Toshiya, Mana, Klaha, some other dude and then another one.... :p

I got into jpop kinda gradually... i got hooked on Ayumi Hamasaki first, when my sister downloaded a song of hers by accident in i think May 2000... i started liking her alot and looked into more jpop that summer (discovered hitomi, Luna Sea, some other singers & groups). Then when i got into anime more, and games more, all the worlds seemed to kinda collide, so i got more into jpop and jrock (not visual, cept for Malice Mizer, but more just plain rock, like B'z and newer L'arc), and now like Chobrat i'm the japanese music pusher among my friends :P Before i got into jpop i was more into hkpop like faye wong & sammi cheng, but i'm not so much in that area anymore (still a huge faye fan though).

Minakolabelle- *nodes* they are expensive. She likes Super dolfies, but they cost a LOT more than Excellent dolfie. (or is it the other way around?!) She hasn't started either, because cosplays are a little expensive, too. ^^;

Moogle Hiromi- lol, if you think about it, what visual kei artist isn't pretty? oh wait.. well... MUCC... lol.

Tainted Donut- *dies* I love that song! haven't even seen the anime yet... but it sounds soo nice. >o<

I got into J-rock, like..7-8 years ago. I had a friend who was a transfer student from Korea, and she was really big on J-rock. I was curious, and asked to listen to a cd. She let me listen to X-Japan, L'Arc~en~Ciel, and a few others, and I became completely hooked. Now I know too many bands, and need to find some more ~_~'

Summer 1999. I went to a HK site and downloaded tons of Namie Amuro and other C-pop stuff. I really liked the tunes, thought it was better than what was popular in the US. I was then hooked.

My girlfriend had just recently come back from Tokyo and had all these Malice Mizer posters, and the Gothic Lolita Bible, and all these beautiful costume photos from Yoyogi(?) Park with all the cosplayers... And being a gothic industrial DJ and all around grrrly glam boy, i fell inlove with the whole Scene (especially Mana-sama). I have been playing J rock on my radio show and will soon incorporate a cosplay j-rock night at the clubs... so much fun weeeee!

Oooooh... Um...

Probably when I first heard Ayumi Hamasaki's "Fly High" Euro-Power mix... Its so great, very energetic.

Then I started listening to Utada Hikaru, and then L'arc~en~Ciel (I LOVE L'ARC!!)

I need to broaden my horizen. But I'm really getting in to J-Music.

When I was first intending to go to A-Kon my friend told me about Duel Jewel, which was suppose to be playing there. She allowed me to listen to a couple of their songs and that's where it started.

I wasn't able to go to that A-Kon but I was able to go to the last one. But a month before A-Kon 16 I downloaded some D'espairsRay songs and got obsessed with Jrock! :jjacks:

It's all my best friend's fault. She always gets me into everything I'm interested in. One day she came into school and handed me a mixed cd of Plastic Tree songs and said, "I thought you'd like this band because you're just like the lead singer." So I listened to it, and it's all been downhill from there. Not that I'm complaining! I prefer jrock to just about any other kind of music out there.

*reads* I didn't know Gackt was their model for Squall... I mean, the resemblance is uncanny (of Gackts old pics anyway... I hear he's had some, um, work done since then) but that's interesting to know. Oh I went off subject... hehehe. My first taste of Japanese music... Ayumi Hamasaki in 9th grade (6 years ago... I'm so old...) Then it turned into Hikaru Utada, which turned to X Japan, then Malice Mizer, hide, Dir en Grey, Moi Dix Mois and more. So now I hardly ever listen to the pop I used to. Now it's all rock. :P

I always wanted to make a Dollfie... Maybe one that looks like Yoshiki (by the way Takara (I think) actually made a doll of him... I wanted it but he was 130 dollars I didn't have...) Or a Kozi dollfie (That would be kinda creepy but unique) But I came up with another idea that is in the process of becoming reality- Malice Mizer and X Japan teddy bears. The plan is to go to build a bear or something, get enough bears, take them all home and make clothes and wigs for them.
Now I hope nobody takes my teddy idea.... :sulk:

how i got in to jrock/jpop...

being japanese helps i guess, i've exposed to japanese culture all my life. my dad had Bubble Gum Crisis and even ended up buying the soundtrack when i was about 6 or 7. he made me a tape for me that i wore out a couple times. when i was about 9, i had stumbled accross an X Japan cd that my parents had bought when we still lived in japan. i listened to it and fell in love with it. since then i had tried to find more japanese music, but there wasn't really a good fan base here to get stuff especially when i was younger. in the last 4 or 5 years its been gradually easier to get music (bigger fan base, internet, having job, etc), so now i am finally able to enjoy more bands then before.

I have no idea what got me into Jpop/rock..I guess because it was just so great, and I'd never heard anything like it before.

Plus, the artists put the same amount of effort into their songs as they do their appearance. Very admirable.
