View Full Version : How do I break in pleather boots?

Would i use the same methods as leather? Or would that ruin the boot?

I know that i could try walking in them, but that really isnt working that well, and i have to nurse my feet back to health for a few days before i can do it again.

Also, what kind of gel inserts should i get. I deffinatly are getting some because my shoes are sooo hard XD

i think the best thing really is to wear them. Even if you have to take breaks in between. Try wearing band-aids or wrapping your feel so you don't get blisters. Or if you have a friend who can wear them you could ask them to break 'em in for you?

I donít know about the material wise, but I can help with the breaking in process. With hiking boots, it is important to wear two layers of socks- one thick wooly one, and one thin one. The purpose in the hiking world is to absorb sweat (thick) and lessen the friction on your feet (thin).

What you can try doing is either buy the thinner socks from a camping store and wear those underneath your usual socks (I donít think thick wool would fit in tight pleather boots, but you can try). The socks arenít just your usual pair but smaller, they are made with a mix of materials and woven in a different way to make them more comfortable. If you are on a budget, Iíve heard (but havenít tried) of wearing pantyhose as the Ďbase layerí; you could try that if you have a spare pair.

Prevention! If you still get blisters, then mole skin is your friend. You can buy them at probably any convenient store in the first aid isle, and just follow the directions. For some people, their feet are shaped in certain areas that guarantee a blister, no matter what they try. If you have some problem areas you can put the mole skin on at the beginning of the day and help prevent them (if they start to peel off because they are in a high friction area of your foot, just slap a piece of duct tape to keep it on, it shouldnít hurt at all when you take it off)

Sorry if any of this confuses you, but basicaly, wear two socks and use mole skin where needed :)

what I have picked up over the years and lots of experts reccommend is that you really can' break in boots. That is a myth, your feet just kinda get more used to them. Example I have a pair of character shoes, had them for 3 years and they still arent broken in. If a pair of shoes are really hard to walk in and are uncomfortable, they will always be uncomfortable, jut maybe slightly less over time. And do you really wanna have to wear a shoe around and be in discomfort? I don't but my feet are really sensitive and odd, I find I always get shoes that are only slightly uncomfortable if that. But the way to "break in" a shoe is to flex it around and bend it back and forth, that way it will not be as stiff

Oh yes, if your shoes are too tight you can use hot water to soften them and help you stretch them. I've also set glossy black boots in the sun to do this as well.

My Catwoman boots I bought from Cosworx were pre-stretched using the sun as I really didn't want to run the risk of softening any glue too quickly by using hot water. I know now it would have been a faster better solution ;) But it was good to be cautious with my firt tryout of the technique as some glues do soften under heat.

I stretched a pair of mules (poly satin and beads over a vinyl lining) by pouring just boiled water from the kettle onto the shoes shaking them and stretching the stitching line by hand (rubber gloves protected my hands- I also just clipped some of the stitching but not the fabric to help). Once the water had cooled to just bareable I put my feet in and walked around a bit (outside).

The warning is to make sure you do not put your feet/hands in when the water is too hot! It can be deceptive as the outside will cool faster than the inside and water will accumulate in any foam interlining.

Both boots and shoes are now very comfortable to wear as the only issue was the width. If I had've bought a size larger they would have eventually stretched widthways but then my feet would slide around too much. And I used to have to do that with school shoes which resulted in some major problems with blistering.

Dr. Scholl's has a specific gel insert made just for boots and the like. They also have a separate one for shoes with heels higher than 2 inches. I just bought both to be safe :D

Thanks everyone! Im gunna look at my boots to see what kind of stitchig/glue they have and I might try praying water on them and walking around with my thickest pair of socks on. Do you think tht should help some? Im going to a photoshoot Aug. 15th and that should stretch them out pretty good XD

cotton socks are not that great.. as a person training for a half marathon I suggest getting a pair of duo dry socks (they are a cotton base but with other crap as well that help wick away moisture and I have yet to get a blister, but in regular ole socks, blister galore..

they are relatively cheap and you can eaither get them at running stores of your neighborhood Target....

its probably got a synthetic mixed into it. Like maybe a spandex or something. I think those are what they usually use in the moisture wicking fabrics

i have some socks that keep my feet really dry. I dunno what they are tho, but that should work right?
