View Full Version : Bow - Any Ideas?

Hi everyone! I wanted to cosplay as Kagome from Inuyasha for a future convention and I just needed some advice. You see, my brother already has a fake bow and some arrows that our dad gave him as a present some years ago. I asked him if can use it, but he said he didn't want me paint it or change it in any way.

Here's how his bow looks like:

I was thinking of maybe covering it with something red, put some white cloth in the middle, take out the feathers, and probably paint the string black. Doing that wouldn't damage it, since it's just being covered with something red that can be taken off and I don't think he would mind too much if I painted the string black.

The only problem that I'm having, is what can I cover it with? Also, how can I make the arrows look like Kagome's without changing anything, just covering it. I was thinking of using fabric, but you can see through the fabric a bit so that won't work.

Mind you, I'm a newbie at prop making, so this may sound like a reeeally stupid question...bare with me lol X3

(In this picture, the bow looks brown, but it's supposed to be a maroon red)

If you're planning on having this at a convention, you're probably going to be required to switch the string out for elastic if you want to even have arrows to pose with. Conventions don't allow props that can shoot things, even bows. (nerf guns arent even allowed at cons unless there are NO darts or the gun has been dismantled to the point it can no longer shoot)

As for the bow....is it really long enough? indian bows are much smaller then those used in feudal japan...

I was thinking of that...but in the anime, the bow would change size from episode to episode, so it's pretty hard to guess what size it is, and this is just an idea - I can go for another alternative. Also, I was thinking of changing the string as well, but like you said, I was weary that they wouldn't let me have it there at the con D: You think they let it pass, I mean I'm not gonna go nuts and shoot people with arrows or anything X3

You could have the bow and now arrows. Im sure thatd suffice. As for the bow, just buy some sort of cloth and you can tacky glue the cloth together (cloth on cloth, and not on the bow) and it should work. if you ditch the arrows...that 1) fixed the arrow problem and 2) lessens your chance of getting in trouble. =3 but if you wanna pose with it. you could try and attach an arrow to it with tape so it doesnt come off (like duct tape!) and that could solve things...

sorry just rambled there XD

Lol, that's a good idea XDD Yeah, maybe I'll just make some arrows out of cardboard or something, it'll be less dangerous and people won't probably whine XDD Also what do you suggest to make the bow look a tad bit longer? o01101011 is right, the bow is a bit short...any other ideas for making it longer? Thanks for the help btw x3

uhm..you could try stuffing something under the fabric and just extending it =3 paper mache! it wont hurt the bow because you can dunk it in water and it'll fall off. but you'd have to re-do the string prolly...

or why not just make you own bow outta peper mache or something?

If you have 30$ or so to spend, you might want to try checking out a hunting store in your area and see if they've got something along the lines of this:
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_104463_450001000_450000000_450001000_450-1-0

And then you would be able to modify it if you should choose.

If that's not an option- if you wanted to change the colour of your brother's bow, I'd try wrapping it with a thin strip of fabric or matte ribbon. You could also try making craft foam sheaths for each end (with a small slit to let the string through) and paint the foam the correct colour. Then, you could use the white wrapped handle in the middle as a means of holding the sheaths on and together.

Instead of paint on the string, if he's worried about damage, you could use coloured beeswax (or beeswax with charcoal or graphite in with it) and it would not harm the string, but preserve it ^_^.

As for arrows, I'd recommend buying cheapies or making your own fakes instead of modifying the ones he's got. Again, this relies on having a hunting/camping/outdoor store in your area.

Two options I figure:
Buy a few cheap arrows (cheapest I can find in my area are 5$ Canadian a pop from Canadian Tire, an outdoor/home improvement store) , paint them to match with acrylics, remove the tips and glue them to the bottom of your quiver (so you don't need to worry about them being fireable/con security gettin' ticked).
OR
Buy some wood dowel from a hardware store (3/8th of an inch is about right for arrows- here in Canada, I found a 75" length of it for 2.27$ at home depot, which you could cut into about four shafts) and stain in the colour you need. Then buy a bag of white fletching from a hunting store (5-25$ depending on if they're plastic, synthetic or feather) or you could probably buy some feathers from a craft store and trim them too, if you wanted, and glue them on. You wouldn't need tips (for safety and con rules sake) but you could make some outta foam if you really wanted to.

Sorry for the wickedly long post, but I hope that helps! If you have any questions, fire away!

I posted a reply to this earlier, but apparently the forums ate it ^_^;;

If there is a hunting store near where you live, you may be able to buy your own cheapie bow to alter yourself, they carry them for about 25-30$ at Bass Pro Shop here in Canada.

If not, you can wrap your bow with fabric strips or a matte ribbon to change its colour without damaging it. You could also make foam sheaths and paint them the colour you need and attach them to the bow, using the white wrapping at the grip to fix them to the bow.

If you are going to change the bowstring’s colour, if you use coloured beeswax or charcoal or graphite mixed with beeswax it won’t damage the string, as opposed to paint or sharpie which wouldn’t be great on it.

You’re probably better off buying or making your own arrows instead of trying to mod the ones you have. Again, if there is a hunting/outdoors/camping store near where you live you can buy them (I found some for about 5-6$ a pop at Canadian Tire). To make them con safe, I’d remove the tips (if they’re sold with tips, many aren’t) and glue them to the bottom of your quiver so that there is no risk of them being shot. Or, you can make your own fake ones out of wooden dowel (which you can find at a hardware store, I found a 75in. length of 3/8in. width dowel for 2.29$ at Home Depot, 75in. would make about 4 arrow shafts) which you could stain to the right colour and fletching (5-25$ depending on if you get plastic, synthetic or feather fletch, again, at a hunting store, like Bass Pro Shop) or you could probably just buy craft feathers and cut them into the right shape before gluing them on. Again, you could glue the “arrows” into the bottom of the quiver so they’re not considered a threat (though if you don't cut a nock into the top of the shaft, there'd be no way to shoot them anyway ^_~ so you could probably make foam heads and they'd still be safe).

Sorry for the long post, but hopefully that gives you some options- if you have any questions, let me know!
