View Full Version : Looking for a giant wrench

Does anyone know where I can get a giant wrench? Preferably something steampunk looking.
I've seen the 19 inch thing that's on a bunch of different websites. I want something bigger, like three or four feet long, but light enough where it wouldn't be a problem carrying it around all day (probably slung over the back on some kind of strap).

You're just not going to find a wrench that big for sale. I would have to be commissioned and made from foam, wood or cardboard.

Ok, I figured there might not be anything like that available, but it didn't hurt to ask.
I'm a total newb when it comes to making things like this. What kind of foam to you mean? As as for cardboard, are there any good tutorials out there for making basic shapes so that they are fairly sturdy?

Most cons wouldn't allow a real wrench of any signifigant size. It counts as "live steel". And if you clonked someone with it by mistake, you wouldn't be able to forgive yourself.
All the standard techniques for making large swords apply here. It's just the same idea with a different shape.
You can make a mold from a metal wrench of the desired shape and size and cast a perfect replica in lightweight foam and/or rubber. But I expect this is overkill for your needs, as it isn't cheap.

By foam they either mean foam board (like you make posters on) or insulation pink foam.
Card board is actually incredibly stable if you layer several pieces of it in alternating directions (alternate the way the lines are going) and glue them together. Then you can use something like poster board or some other light paper board to run around the edges and hide the catacomb effect.
