View Full Version : Shinigami Wings

I'm currently working on a new costume from World Ends with You. And I'm planning on cosplaying a Shinigami. However I am curious, as to what material would be better to create the wings: http://www.noticiasdot.com/publicaciones/galerias/esquare-enix/2008/The-World-Ends%20With-You/The-World-Ends%20With-You-wallpapers/imgpages/image013.html
Would it be best to use foamies or foam-board, foam board seems more sturdier but foamies seem a bit more flexible and could put up with a glomp (though I'm not really thinking I will be glomped in this costume) none the less just wondering if anyone thinks which is better, feel free to list pros and cons of both and if which one would be better to use.
Or... Should I use something else entirely??

if your looking for a more con-friendly material, foamies is the way to go. it'll definetely hold up against glomps and the common bumps and shoves you get from people.
however, foamboard would give you a better prop. its more professional. it can be thicker or thinner, and allow for more dimension. i've never seen black foam board so you'd have to paint it. shaping it and molding it will be fun ;P but over all, it'll look way better than foamies.
so its either con-friendly and good looking, or professional looking but a bit less safe.
in my opinion, i would use foamboard. i dont usually get glomped so i usually use the more professional stuff.
ps. thanks for your help on the 'rin headphones' thread. i could not for the life of me remember what foamboard was called! :)

Yeah the other issue with foamies is that if I make them large enough they'll flop over.
As for foamboard- I'm not really sure what you mean by molding it. o_o Foam board is kind of like posterboard that's foamy with a plastic-y surface.
They do make it in black though we have some here. X3

I second fhe foamboard idea. The other thing you need to worry about though is,if the foam itself is not black, is painting and covering the edges where you cut. Any ideas as for covering the raw edges?

^^; As I said, the foamboard IS black.
As for the raw edges... I'm not really certain. I could always go around and fill the edges with hotgluing and flatten the glue out... But I really don't know that too is an issue.

Since the costume is your avatar,I will take your word for it.

DBZ Freak: The wings are photoshopped there. But the foam-board I got today is black foam. X3
SoZettaSlow: It's alright. ^^ Yeah I ended up picking up the foam board today and going to use the good ol exacter knife.

Foamboard would probably be a good option, but I would be more tempeted to make a wire base the cover it with pleather, but that is only because I think the wings would look better with a leather look. But, black foamboard would be very good. As for the raw edges I would probably smoothe them a little by running the exacto knife along the sides at an angle then I would apply a few layers of mod-podge so it could be sanded down it needed.

Yeah the leather idea is good but I have less than two weeks to get this costume done. So yeah ^^; But if I do it again I'll probably do the wings much better.
Thank you though, I'll definitely do that with the mod-podge.

just get some craft foam (foamies) and glue a few layers together.. they will be sturdy and still able to take a beating. glue it with any sort of fabric glue.

Already bought the foam board. Besides even if I were to use the foamies the wings are going to be rather large, so even if I do them layered there's the fact that they still might not work and the fact they will look layered something I want to avoid.
