I am in the planning stages for my Hayate Yagami [from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's and StrikerS]. This is the most complicated costume I have ever done, and I was hoping for some advice on how to create some of the more complicated pieces.

This is her [full body images]:

Some closer images

I have no idea how to make her armor >m<. I was thinking using a thick wooden dowel for the body of the staff, with a carved wood topper [my neighbor is handy with a jigsaw] and then sanding and painting the whole thing, but would that be too heavy? Her wings,....I want them to be flexible enough to move and not get damaged if they get hit or bump something, so I was thinking a wire frame attached through strategically placed slits in the jacket and attaching to some sort of harness underneath. In the pictures the wings don't really look all that feathery, so I don't really want to make them with feathers... maybe something like coated craft foam?? I don't know... And the book, I am really tempted to make a couple of pages with the interior design, but it would require some stamp work I think.. I kinda want to make a part of it hollow, like those stow-away books, so I can put my cell in it so I don't have to worry about a bag or trying to make pockets.

Any and All ideas are VERY welcome! >w<

Thanks in advance!

If you can find sheets large enough, I would say craft foam for the armor, but you'd have to probably buy those large rolls of foam to get pieces big enough.

Wood shaping could work for the staff. You can use glue or something like that for small detailing.

For the book, you can go to a 2ndhand store or a used book store and find a heavy, cheap book to your liking. With the right kind of paper and clever use of MS Word and/or Photoshop, you can probably make a few pages of gibberish or whatever for the inside, and as for cutting a hole in it, you'd have to probably glue the cut-through rest of the pages in place around the sides and to the back cover in order to keep your stuff securely in place inside of it. (Otherwise, your stuff may spill out if your book flips open)

Thanks for the advice! Craft foam sounds like it would work well and I never even thought of using photoshop to do the writing! >w<
