I'm doing an Anbu cosplay and I wanted to rip the scarf up for a more rugged look but I don't know how to go about it without it looking more sloppy then the look I'm going for. Does anyone have any idea how to properly do this so it looks right.

I'm going for something like Cloud Strifes scarf in KH:

I.. believe this can be achieved by burning it over a stovetop range, but as I've never done it before myself and anything with fire is not a chance you want to take, I definitely would not do it unless someone who knows better can recommend it XD;

I made a ripped scarf for my Kamikirimusi costume. I took a wire brush to the ends to fray them and a seam ripper to rip holes into it. I then took some black fabric paint and dry brushed it onto the scarf so it looked like it was burnt.

If it was a cotton fabric, burning the ends would be effective, but you'd end up with a bad smell on the scarf that would probably last a while.
