Well my sister and I had to leave as soon as the masq was over so we didn't get to stick around for the awards.
Now we're wondering who won what ^_^;;

This isn't Xio. It's Kisa at her computer, because i'm too lazy to log out and re-log in.

Anyway. CNA was what I expected. Generally Overpriced and boring, but I had fun with people. The Tea-Party was fun... Tim Hortons was fun. The Masq. was amusing for various reasons Mostly those being not IN the Masq.
Heard the Sekino girl won Best of Show, which made me happy, because she had an amazing skit and deserved it. Didn't care/hear about anything else tho.
Had more fun just taking random pictures and doing funny things with people then anything the con could provide.
Not that I had to pay tho, so. It's all good I suppose.

In terms of stuff to do at the con, it sucked. Nothing to do but watch anime and buy stuff in the dealers room.

But everything else rocked. Meeting new people, the masquerade, Friday night dinner, and seeing those certain friends you only see at cons.

okay..........I'm reallllllllllly! really TIRED! >< I really like the masq. stage, it looks more professional than before ( it was kinda crappy compare with other cons in US....LoL) anyway, it was great, but I dunno, I'm not as excited as last year ...I have no idea why ^^|||| and I'm really happy that I'm the only Sakura (from Sakura Taisen) in the con ^^||| and there were tonz of Naruto cosplayers :p for the photos.....well, I don't have my camera with me..so..yup, I'm only gettin' mine from Maki ^^ and last...I feel so embarrassing about my acts in the masq. award ceramony, I look soooooooo dumb..LoL, okay...enough of that ^^ hope everyone have fun there :D

Cole-were you in the masq yourself? If so, what level were you? (I'll see if I can remember who won those awards in that category...)

But if you were just a spectator, I (and the rest of my group-"Prince Diamond, Avery (me) and Black Lady") won one of the awards: "Best in Novice". How that happened, I know not, but--who cares. ;) Yay!
XD I knew it was you when you came on the stage. I starting blithering to my friend and the new people that I met whom let us come in line and sit with them that it was you. They sorta just stared at me o_o;

teehee, but you where awsome ^_^ too bad i didn't get to talk to you though, rae wanted to go to most of the events and stuff so not much time to talk to people for me @_@ but oh well, i still had fun.

Yeah, i had fun ^_^ so tired though.. the masq was awsome. I wont have my pictures uploading untill thursday though, since i have to finish my one roll of film off tomorow (at my sisters surprise bday party~) before I can take them. Its just so much easier. Even though I have a few on my digi cam too, i might get those up tomorow.

I tried to find you after the masq but my dad was waiting for me for an hour x_x (eh I told him to come to early oops..) I wish I could have stayed for the anime all night and the awards. Oh well, maybe next year.

Kenney: I personally thought it was fantastic. There were tons of cosplayers (especially Paine, The Fushigi Yugi group, etc..) and the masquerade, besides the lack of humorous skits, was incredible becase it was held in the John Basset theatre. I loved the Anime All Night/Karaoke. And those random comments like:

Read or Die: After the agent performs flips and superhuman acrobatics "I CAN DO THAT!"

And...

ExDrivers: After they rescue the family from the out of control car on the highway and save the day "When I grow up, I wanna be an ExDriver!"

Hahaha.... That was me. Hahahaha.

Barks: Way to go Kenney! You are the life of this party. Also, I found this con to be very enjoyable too. There were several events to keep me up and at'em, my last chance to enjoy seeing the masquerade MCed by Gord himself along with the Anime All Night run by the A.E.U.G (God, am I going to miss you guys), and most importantly, the numerous people who cosplayed (or didn't) whom I had fun with. Only problem is... The reprecussions in being zombified after the con. But hey, I've always had that problem. Who hasn't?

One thing that also annoyed/disappopinted me is that you have to miss the whole bleeping masq if you want to partcipate IN it---esp if you are near the end of the show (like us). I think I got to see a total of 4 performances in the whole masq.

I guess I've grown accustomed to the screens set up in the masq greenrooms at AN and TT...so even though you are waiting for your turn in the masq, you can still see what's going on via the screen...

Definitely an idea for next year's CN.

Ah! The joys  of FAN RUN cons as opposed to corporate ones!

oh my god! how can I forget! yes the ninjas! actually, to tell the truth, I like this yr's CN masq VERY VERY MUCH! it's quite high tech! ^^

actually if Maki didn't mention about how the stage is sooooooo slippery, I wouldn't know why the ninjas are there, i was wearing boots and they keep me safe enough on stage....and when i was watching the masq. after ourz done, i mean, there'r tons of ppl who are almost fallin' off the stage, really, **big claps for ALL the ninjas** if you guys aren't there, I know therez gonna be atleast 2~3 ppl will fall of the stage during/after their performance! thankz to all of you!

Kisa again, because I'm a brat and still lazy....

But yeah. We were COLD! Stupid "shorts and big socks are cute!" mentatlity... but it's good to know we're appreciated. ^_^

If only people would remember next year that Running AT US is not fun.
I swear, me, Xio and Julie were about to cry every now and then when someone would decide to take a running jump at the stairs.... That is so not the most fun job in the world. The only job that would have been worse, would have been Neo (poor Guy...) and the girl who threw herself under the Trigun-stage-jumping-guy... That was... um. Unexpected. So, if anyone ended up being GRABBED at some point while going down the stage... Blame one-too-many freakouts.

Also.... WORSE CROWD EVER!! I'd have been ashamed to be associated with some of the heckling that went on. I hope the random-asses who think they're funny... get stabbed in the face. Because, I think THAT would be funnier.

(btw, this is actually xio now! :p)

yes! i was so cold! o_O;; then we went outside and it was even colder, so i had to borrow someone's hoodie. yay for nice boys who lend you sweaters. (except now i want to keep it coz it's fuzzy :P)

haha i was the ninja who got scolded for talking >D i'm such a bad ninja! :P but it's kind of hard to act like you're supposed to be invisible when you have nothing to hide behind :P (it's just weird how the steps went off the side of the stage instead of behind a curtain ^^;;)

(maki: *whispers* kisa and me were at the top of the steps. but don't tell anyone you saw us! we're invisible and stuff! >_>;;; *hides*)

but yeah. i have to agree with kisa, worst audience i've ever seen here! ok, so it's not like the horror stories i hear about random cons in the states with people getting boo-ed offstage, but we're supposed to have a reputation for being *nicer* up here in canada! :P if you were in the audience (which most of you on this board weren't, so i'm not offending anyone here) ...some heckling is funny, and everyone can tell you i'm not any good at keeping my mouth shut *100%* of the time, (even when i'm supposed to be invisible ;P) but for the love of god, learn to shut up sometimes! ...please? the mass amount of incoherent meaningless shouting just got painfully bad after a certain point. poor gord. -_-

um.. anyway, CNA was pretty much what i was expecting it to be... an excuse to wear more costumes and hang out with my friends, with a couple of extra events thrown in, like coffee and masquerade staffing and sunday dinner. i dont' expect much from CNA, and in fact, i tend to expect it to completely suck, so pretty much everything stupid that happens amuses me as much as it annoys me, in that "haha i was right" or "wow, it actually CAN get even stupider" sort of way ;) but if i go to hang out with my friends i'll be satisfied either way. and i met a few more nice people this year so that's even better.

now i'm just crashing and waiting for pics... :P

*goes to bed X_X*

what?! u get scolded?! actually you know what, i was still scared when i was on the stage, i dunno if u remembred, i went to the wrong way, coz we have 4 ppl for our skit and i was the 3 person so i couldn't see how did the last group left the stage because the two other girls blocked my view. I was really scared when someone was telling me i was in the wrong way. and I was still in the panic after performing on stage. was it you that said sth to me when i climbed down the stairs?! it was really comforting words and I feel much better after i hear it. you say it low so shouldn't affect anyone anyways, and the good was way over the harm it did, y did u get scold?! I feel bad for u ~>_<~

(even if u aren't the one who said to me, still, a big hug to Xio ^^)

I was in the crowd. And yes it sucked for the most part.
I don't know whether Balcony was as bad as downstairs or worse, but p there.. NO ONE would shut up. Me and Scoti were sitting there groaning and just waiting for them to leave Gord be and just get the hell on with it. The Tifa behind me kept rudely commenting on the costumes on stage to the point where I was ready to smack her 'accidentally' in the face with my Bo as I got up. Its not like hers was a work of art, or she had the guts to go up there.

Skit wise it was pretty good, there were alot of really cute skits and awesome costumes. I'm glad the 'She' cosplayer won best in show because hers was great.

I could see the two on the stairs were Kisa and Xiola from the balcony.. though it was mostly ebcause I recognized Xiolas hair xD. I'm surprised you two didnt get ran over.

On the con in general.. meh.
I got pictures taken, took alot of pictures, met some people and hung out with old friends. That was about it, I'd say the day that went by fastest was Sunday for some reason and I was almost sad to go because there were so many people I had been talking too I wanted to say goodbye to.

So.. It may be crappy in some areas, but you'll see me there next year . bluh.

Oh! Haha. I forgot to post my con report.....

Much like others here, for me it's just and excuse to hang out and see friends and costumers/cosplayers. As long as I'm there helping make the masquerade an enjoyable experience for people it will be worth it.

Not much more about the con really excites me. I only went up into the dealers room once to see some dealer friends of mine and to cast about for something to buy. (I only bought one thing and it was a gift for someone else).

As usual I really enjoyed seeing what people presented at the masquerade. There were some fantastic walk ons this year. :) I'm glad that people are feeling less shy about walk ons.

As usual my main complaint about CNA is that there are no Workmanship awards and less awards given in general.

There are many people I hope compete their costumes again at AN and other cons.

It was great seeing everyone come out. Thanks for supporting the masquerade. :)

Finally back home... I'll have a much detailed con report... but for all intents and purposes... wow... good fun.

Although I really didn't get to see any anime (outside of 'Boys Over Flowers') this year has to be probably up there in my top fun times at a convention...

The dealers room once again came through with great deals... the masq would have been better for me if I was actually in it :waaaah: but dems da breaks... It was nice meeting many from these boards from the first time. Others I saw, but no time to introduce myself mostly. Anyways, as I said before great time... I had some problems with the event, but these spring from some people's attitudes and some volunteers who have sticks up their ass.

Kia: I have your books, I'll probably be down by you on Thurs.
That is all for now... I'm trying to capture what I taped.... be back later!

I would like to reinforce the kudos to the ninjas.

They did a magnificent job ... and when you think that they either don't get to see the masquerade, or do so at their peril (Kisa, Xiola, et al), they probably do the most to make the show come of fas well as it does.

I'd also like to say thanks to the storm troopers and the gang from the 501st Battlegroup for a boffo opening to the show! I didn't get a chance to thank them after the masquerade, but I did talk to them personally on Sunday and they were amazed at the huge response you guys gave them.

It was also fun to meet new people and put names/faces to old ones (and thanks for the kiss Christine!! ;) I wore the lipstick like a badge pf honour!). I had great fun chatting with everybody I did. You guys are great!

... except for the handful of bottom feeders who ruined many of the presentations in the last part of the masquerade. If you know who these people are (and aren't ashamed to be seen with such classless ignorami in public), please reinforce to them the idea that the costuemrs pay just as much as they do for the privilige of entertaining them with their art for just a few minutes. :fuming:

I could rant at length on these idiots ... but I won't.

All in all, I had fun meeting many of you and will miss doing my small part to entertain you next year.

Maybe I'll come and just hang out with you all! :D

Gordon

PS. On the subject of tapes ... If CTV, or Canadian Idol, or anybody like that, came up and confiscated a tape threateneing legal action, I'd hand it over no questions asked. This is just a hobby guys!

And if there is a tape (and I'm not saying there is) or if there were tapes in the audience (and I'm not saying that there were more than half a dozen or so that I know about) I'm sure there will be one for circulation somehow (not that I'm saying there is).

;)

but yeah... power crisis... canadian idol... all of it - corporations are stupid...! and well, you can't really expect much more from them. but i wouldn't be at all surprised if the crap we went through with the theatre this year will just end up making the masq suck even more next year - because i'd be shocked if we ever got the theatre again after this so it might just go back to ghetto-city next year. fun. but i really have no idea. ~_~

Oh yes, the tape didn't work last yr *sigh* but actually heehe, not much ppl know about it, the tape was only one line ^^ we planned to use our original voice at the begining ^^ that line is only to say "Ichigo vs. Nakoruru" just like what you hear when u ar playing video games ^^

Nya...just posting to thank the wonderful ninjas. *glomps Kisa again* I didn't feel brave, though, I felt silly. =P Hence my reply of "Someone shoot me. Now." to your comment. XP

Also...it was nice seeing ye back stage before going up, Louise. ^_^ *hugs* Too bad I didn't get to actually hug you at this con. Legolas looked spiffy. ^_^V

eee....someone told me there was a lot of heckling and audience stuff when Heki-chan and I went up there, but I was so nervous and scared that I didn't hear a thing! x_X; Or maybe I was too distracted by Mr. Neo Stage Ninja dude. Bwah. Can someone tell me what Gord said following SMA's walk-on (or maybe Gord can tell me himself? ^_^ wish i could've talked to you this year, Gord)? I couldn't make it out through the theatre walls...T_T

Sharon & Co., I liked your skit, though I actually had no idea what was going on. That poor rabbit endured so much abuse. =P

Chobrat + Scoti, you were impressive as always. ^_^ Ooh, the weaponry...*_*

It was nice to meet you, Kaiju, though I was a little nervous at the time and not terribly friendly/talkative T_T I'd just had a serious issue with the carpet tape on my bootcovers. (on that note, even though he's not on the cosplay.com board, thanks once again to Dave for running over the carpet tape *_* lifesaver, yo!)

My guess is that they didn't want people to think that Canadian Idol ahd endorsed us or supported us in any way during the filming.

Though I think that if they were so perturbed about that, they should of moved their freaking set elsewhere for the masquerade.

I acctually would assume that they didn't want people making money off selling things with the Canadian Idol logo on them.

Oh, I get it...so there were Canadian Idol signs or something on the stage? Hm, okay I guess that makes sense but it's annoying that the participants themselves can't even get a tape...I mean couldn't you sign something saying you won't sell copies..?

No you can't. They don't want to risk having us, (not described very flatteringly I might add), linked to thier show in any way. I belive a fine of $10,000. was mentioned regarding anyone who is found to have tapes. There is more but I can't print it here.

um. they tried to cover it with carpets. without TAPE because that would wreck their paint job, incurring yet another fine... >_>

and well, un-taped carpets with all those people running around like crazy on stage? you do the math - that's an even *bigger* liability and did not go over well. basically i'd like to think people's safety is more important than having video tapes, and i hope anyone here would agree.

it's not really anything anyone had control over.

Well that's a major pain :(

I was in the masquerade, and even though there were a dozen or so groups after me I had to leave, so all I really saw were two or three groups from backstage. I was told there was no official tape, but I was holding out hope that something somewhere got through...

At least now I have an actual answer :)

As far as tapes of the masquerade go (and I'm not saying there IS one ;) ) ...

We had every intention of having an "official" tape and it was this that was confiscated at about entry #21 or #26 or something. If we'd known that this was going to happen we'd have told everybody beforehand. So, we're still waiting to hear what the verdict is.

The reason I was asking for people to e-mail me about independent copies in the audience (and I'm not saying there WERE ... but just in case ;) ) was so that we might get a number of copies and make a rough edit of the tapes into one copy...

... That is, if there WERE tapes ... and I'm not saying there are. ;)

*giggles* so true ^^
I mean, I believe OUR preparation for the show is far more then those of C.I. All they do is dance, sing...etc...how long does that take to practice? If you are good you really dont' even need much practice and stuff, but us we spent time to practise skits, need time to go cosplay shopping + the time we took to do the sewing, props (just for the skit - though I personally is just writting things out but I know a few dozen ppl who actually need to spend time to do their Masq. props good for u guys :bigtu: our preparation often starts at least a month or two b4 the show, and our competition has far more variety in it!)

All I really wanna say is, I don't understand why C.I. has power over us, I mean, they too are only rentting the area, it's not like they own it....I know it is hard to set up and stuff, but that's their problem.....|||

Lots of foolishness.

The first thing that needs to be known is, what happened during the meeting where Hobbystar/CNAnime rented the theatre. Was CTV present during that meeting, and was the issue of the logo discussed?

If it turns out CTV was aware of the upcoming show, then an implicit contract existed, that CTV knew the logo would appear on the show unless they took steps to cover it correctly or remove it. Remember, copyrights exist only so long as they are defended, and it is the responsibility of the holder to defend them. Failure to do so surrenders the right.

On the issue of carpet. Both the hotel and CTV have experience running theatres, and at no time could it be argued that they didn't know how to correctly cover a stage floor. Since neither of them did this, (and CTV even expressed the opinion that damage to the stage from tape was *more of a problem* than exposure of the logo) we can say that the loose carpet was not a viable attempt to protect copyright.

Cessation of taping. Only the owners of the property could ask that taping be stopped. Since CTV is not an owner, that point is moot. (Note: hotel security is not a representative of the hotel, no more than a janitor would be). CTV had no authority on this point.

Removal of the tapes. Theft. CTV is not an officer of the law, had not been deputized, nor were they at any time an officer of the court (bailiff). They had no right to remove materials or goods from anybodies possession at any time.

10,000 fine. Threat with intent to coerce action. This type of thing has a handy legal label, blackmail. CTV cannot issue fines or expect revenues from them, only the law can do that. (both in the body of law, ie: a fine for parking, or the action of the law, ie: a judge issues a fine for breaking of a law.) The fact that this was mentioned is grounds for a lot of court action on its own, not withstanding anything else.

What it boils down to is the fact that CTV knew we would be using the theatre, knew we would be taping, and took no action until after the show had begun, and then removed items not belonging to them, including material not even related to their grievance (the two cameras at stage height could have no view of the logo at any time). They had ample opportunity to correctly cover the logo, or inform us they did not want it to appear in the final product (it would have been time consuming, but not difficult, to remove the logo digitally during the editing phase).

And this doesn't even cover the loss of revenue and irrecoverable expenses incurred by Hobbystar/CNAnime due to CTV's actions.

do you want to pay for a lawyer and deal with all of the crap that would happen because of it?
Cause, being a poor university Student, I can't. I neither have the Time or the Money.
And 99% of the people who came out, can't either.

([from xiola:] *agrees* none of us HERE, can do anything. if you want to volunteer next year and be the one to argue endlessly with people who claim authority and won't let you do anything, while a screaming crowd of con attendants is being ushered into the theatre 5 minutes before the masquerade is due to start, then by all means, sign up! ^_~)

CN Anime is always a lot of fun as long as you have a friend or a group of friends to hang out with, because there are always times during the day where there is nothing of interest going on.

I had a lot of fun overall and enjoyed seeing Fred Gallagher, and being in the masquerade.

As for the carpet, I must admit that as slippery as the stage was (I almost fell down the stairs trying to get off Im very thankful for the stage ninjas and the hand railings) Im glad that they removed the carpet because that can be more dangerous to walk/dance/run on than a slippery stage.

Im also saddened that there wont be an official tape, but this is my third time competing in the masquerade and Im use to there not being a tape. In fact I was overjoyed that we were able to get in to see at least some of the other performers even though it was the last half of the masquerade. (We were #44)

There were a lot of great costumes this year and I wish I could have seen more of the performances congratulations to all of the winners. Oh for those of you who dont know who won or not, the Anime Caf has a list of the winners on their site.

(kisa:) can we stab them in the face? >_<

(xio:) *agrees but tries to be the nice nonviolent person she's supposed to be 9_9* i thinks we should go back to having the masq in the tiniest conference room possible next year! because they obviously aren't going to give us the theatre again and then there would be less idiots screaming and interupting the show constantly! :D

you obviously didn't see how much crappier it was LAST year. just be happy you got in at all! what do you want from us?? the SKYDOME? this is an anime con. since when is the city willing to rent us cool places? either that, or do you want to pay 100$ for your already-overpriced con ticket? we got a friggin theatre for f's sake! last year we had a *conference room with no stage*.

a) it's very customary at many many cons to line up AT LEAST AN HOUR EARLY if you want seats at ALL. that's a fact of life at cons. cons do not usually get larger venues than the confines of their hotel will allow. this is not some professional event type thing where ten billion people pay $50 and everyone is getting paid for it

b) if you wnat to bitch about something, blame the people on the balcony who were leaving huge gaps between their seats. there were plenty of those.

c) the friday night anime also got a theatre... if you want bigger theatres, you HAVE TO go across town. that's why it was across town! because it was one of the only places they could rent feasibly that they wouldn't have to worry as much about space. -_-

... *glowers and goes off to make dinner* i don't hate things, really, i don't. just... yeah. T_T

Changing the subject slightly here *cough*, what's everyone's opinions on the hotels? Where did everyone stay? I stayed in the Strathcona and it was about as mediocre as I expected.
Strathcona was pretty funny. The beds in our room were extremely tiny, but when I finally got some sleep it was extremely comfortable. I love the advertising of the hotel... saying that N64 would be in each room... to play it costs like $7 bucks... If only I remembered to bring my DreamCast! Plus calls from the hotel cost .75cents... event LOCAL calls! Thats crazy!
Other than that there isn't that much to say... it was basically a shower and a storage room. Thats it.
How was the DBZ party? I shrugged off the invite during Anime All Night because I was waiting for someone... but seeing how that night turned out, I knida wish I checked it out!

You have to make sacrifices if you want to get a seat, thats how it goes. Look at the sched and make a judgement call. What do you want to see more? Can someone save you a place in line?

Really, Justin? I thought the beds were AWFUL. I could barely sleep the first night, and I left in pain (which lasted a good few days after I got home). Could be because I'm an old fogey (hahha), ;), but I'll vote on the "bad bed" thing instead.

Nah... take my opinions with a grain of salt. I also find the floor comfortable... soft beds = no sleep in my situation.

I agree that you should have come, because Anime All Night on Sat was pretty boring.

I didn't find 'Colourful' nor 'X Racer' interesting what-so-ever! And after waiting forever to get use of the pool table, I was kindly told to not play pool because it disturbs people from watching the anime. So rather than pluck my eyes out to watch the show, I went to sleep.

Saturday didn't have the same type of energy that Friday had, which went on till 6:30am!

Regarding the tape confiscation incident.

1) Target security was hired and acting on behalf of CTV to protect thier interests, (namely, stage, props, and all), and was therefore for all intents agents of CTV.

2) They are quite serious about said legal actions and have been keeping an eye on the "situation". i.e. called the videographer for an interview and other things I'm not going to post here but you are free to ask me about in person anytime.

3) John regrets not being able to provide quality tapes of the masquerade for the contestants and masq fans. Due to this experience he regrettably has decided not to film any further masquerades at CNA/SFX. He will still be present at Anime North, Toronto Trek, and many other local conventions however.

I understand and respect his decision, but I can't say that I'm not dissappointed. The whole situation reeks of crappiness. I wish CTV let there feelings known prior to the event to avoid the frustration of both John and the cosplayers.

yah, I am a little disappointed too, but it is all CTV's fault. All I wanna say is, I hope someday CTV will regret this decision. Anime is growing very rapidly in N.America. It's the same in Utada Hikaru's situation - they might think little of Anime now, but they dunno how strong this Anime Craze is hitting N. America one after another and they will regret today's decision of not wanting to be involved at all!!

*I am just wondering, does that means no more offical tapes for masq. from now??*
