View Full Version : Wearing a wig for normal everyday life?

Does anyone wear a wig just for normal everyday fashion?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea because I used to bleach, dye, relax, straighten and do all sorts of stuff to my hair and usually I ended up almost bald several times :(

Im tired of losing all my hair!

I have always wanted shoulder length snow white hair or totally pink hair (i used to have a totally pink mohawk!)
but I'm embarrassed to wear a colorful wig in public. I feel as though people are looking at me and knowing it's a wig and not my own bleached hair. I would get a weave but I actually cant afford one right now.
for some reason when i had my own crazy colored hair I felt confident...but I feel less confident if its a wig. (i cant figure out why!)

So does anyone else wear brightly colored wigs or natural wigs for the normal everyday?

Personally, I don't. My wigs are usually heavily styled and very expensive. Therefore, I wanna use them only when I need to. I'm not sure, but I think that the fibre damages in use because it's plastic.

But in your case, I would deffinetly go for it. If you want to have a bright pink hair, go ahed. Or you should start with not so bright colors untill you are comfortable wearing a wig in public.

But if I had a loott of wigs, (which I don't cause they are expensiveee D:) I would LOVE to wear a wig everyday <3 Wigs are just lots of fun.

I do sometimes. I can't change my hair, and I get bored with things quite easy, and want to change it up. So wigs are great for that.

People do this all the time in East Asian countries (Japan, China, Korea, etcetc)

There are special fashion wigs for everyday use; you should look for those. I don't know the specifics, but the fibres are different and flow much more naturally than cosplay wigs.

I don't do it, but that's just because I'm too tired to do anything to myself except basic toiletries in the morning. xD

If you have the right wigs and are happy to use them all the time in public, I have a friend who met me at the train station only last month and she was in a fairly ordinary looking wig.

And I absolutely couldn't tell. It looked fab on her. Maybe because it was a wig she wore for a costume we did one year and I was used to it. But nevertheless, if it looks alright then go for it.

Personally I'm not a fan of the wearing of brightly coloured full wigs in public. They just look too costume-y.
Fashion wigs designed for everyday use are fine in by books though.
If you want the super bright colours, extensions are neat! I wear synthetic dreads and I blend blues and pinks in with my naturally brown hair for interest. You can make your own weaves for clipping in, too, if you can't find extensions.

I usually don't like taking my wigs, even normal-looking ones, out in public when it's not a con/Halloween. I kind of get this feeling like I'm hiding something that there's nothign wrong with, and in the event my wig might come off or someone notices it's a wig, well, there's the embarassment of how awful I look with my hair pinned up and the "I'm wearing a wig, yet I have nothing wrong with my hair so I'm weird" idea. Kind of hard to explain. But yeah. I don't like wearing my wigs outside of cons. I MIGHT occasionally stick them on when it's so hot and humid in the summer that my hair can't be tamed with anything, but only long enough to give my hair a break from the stickiness and go back to semi-normal(Dunno how it works when a wig makes your head even hotter, but it does...). And in those cases, I never really went out.

Occasionally I'll wear either my long blond wig that I use for Belarus or my short blond wig that I use for Liechtenstein out somewhere. It's a nice change from my usual medium brown curly hair. Plus, I'm usually too lazy to style my own hair, and it's stuck up in a ponytail most of the time. It's just easier for me to put it up into a wig cap and stick on a prestyled wig.

I'm glad to see i'm not the only one who wonders this type of thing! ,i'm a hair color junkie myself and miraculously i have stopped dying my hair for almost 2 months-to this day i still havent dyed it...phew!-, however i've seen tons of potential characters to cosplay and i get that itch to get my hair JUST like them lol its horrible!! I'd suggest to PiercedPikachu, its up to you really :) if you dont mind wearing your wig out in public for fun/new look go for it! it'll be something to look foward to when youre dressing up !

I have a ton of wigs, and a lot of them are considerably normal and natural looking. So sometimes I'll wear them out places, especially if I'm having a bad hair day or something. XD I think it's kind of fun!

My natural hair is horrible and years of dying and bleaching have trashed it and made it even worse.
I am very keen to start wearing a wig (nothing too loud) daily but my biggest irrational fear is that some chav will pull the wig off my head and I'll lose it (not sure if you have chavs in America, they're like horrid kids (or even adults) who insult, scream abuse at, spit at or sometimes even attack people they don't know, for no reason - and my town is crawling with them).
Also, I worry that people at work will all keep asking why I am wearing a wig and that I'll get totally sick of going into how I hate my hair and so on and so forth.
I'm still pretty tempted to do it though.

I really want to dye my hair pink, but I know its just going to be a billion dollars for something that would fade, so I have thought about buying a wig from Cosworx or something and wearing it XD!
I think its a cool idea if you can pull it off making it look like your real hair ! XD

I would wear a wig for everyday life, but I started itching a lot after 10 minutes of wearing it.

It's funny, but I feel a lot more comfortable wearing not-as-normally coloured wigs on my campus' grounds. it's probably because I'm going to a rather liberal college where people are pretty open-minded. I've gone on campus with somewhat light blue short hair. There were stares, but I've seen people with bright pink hair walk around without batting an eye.

I'm in the same boat as you (the OP). I currently have a half-shaved head of purple hair. XD

Anyway, I totally wear my wigs out in public. :) A lot of people are actually surprised to hear the wigs aren't my real hair. ^^;; In cases like ours, wigs are a good alternative to always changing your real hair... Real hair requires patience and caution... wigs don't. :D

I've thought about it, but I'd rather not bother having to explain to people who already have seen me with my 'normal' hair why my hair is suddenly short/long/pink XD; Even if I go to a super liberal college where plenty of people have whacky hair... People are people. And our 'campus' is really just the downtown area, which is crawling with businessmen, tourists, hobos, etc. I don't feel like dealing with it (also, it's windy, and I don't wanna detangle my wigs every day lmao).

The thing about colored wigs is, no matter how good the wig is, you can ALWAYS tell whether colored hair is bleached and colored or a wig. Bleached and colored hair is more thin/flat and will have more of a gradient to it, whereas wigs will usually be thicker, evenly colored, and (more often than not) less matte. So really, it's not even possible to have a really convincing 'is that a wig or dyed hair?' color wig. For normal colored hair, it's a lot easier to fool people, because normal, untreated hair is evenly toned/colored, without spots of lighter/bleached color.

In the case of Pierced Pikachu, I would use at first natural looking wigs with some kind of gradient or effect....japanese wigs are the best of those.

And after, go for the most colored ones.

In my everyday life...I prefer to make highlights of colours in my hair than use a wig..I cant find quality wigs in my country and after 10 minutes, my wigs tend to bother me so much >w<.
Of course the highlights fade after one month an I have to dye them again, or make a new ones....but later, my hair needs to be dyed in one tone so it doesn't look like bleacher had fall in my head leaving stripes here and there.
And obviously, takes a large ammount of care the hair after all of this.

So I don't recommend to dye your hair if you have long hair and you love it.(I forgot I had to be Tiffa Lockhart for a cosplay...and I had to wait almost two entire years to have my hair of the minimun length required to pull it off and still, I need hair extensions)

But for a special time, party or if you get bored of your hair, a wig can be really useful.
Is just like contact lenses of color.
Sometimes you just want to be different and go crazy for a little. XD

If I had more simple wigs I would probably wear them out more. Most of the ones I have are heavily styled or expensive. I would freak if the were messed up from casual wear. XD

Once in awhile I'll go out wearing my light blonde wig I use for Russia or a black wig that's for my OC of Slovakia. My parents don't allow me to color or cut my hair without their consent so wearing wigs out and about give me some of that freedom.

PiercedPikachu, what site did you get those pictures from? Those wigs look cool :)

If you're going to wear wigs for everyday though, I would suggest:

1: If you get a capless wig like the ones in the pictures appear to be, wear a headband, decoration or something to cover up the lack of visable scalp :P Also styles with bangs look less 'wiggy' and conceal your hairline better.

2: Or, look for something with a skin part or dot. (though these can look fake as hell in some wigs) However personally I would shell out a little more money for a monofilament or maybe even a reasonably priced lace front (if such a thing exists.)

3: If you're going to wear a wig in a bright colour like pink, get a sharpie and colour the roots in a darker colour like black. This would help a capless synthetic look a little more natural perhaps.

4: Last but not least, watch out for SHINYNESS! This is the curse of synthetic wigs and is the number one giveaway sign that you're wearing one! I've noticed even the more expensive 'designer' wigs can still be too shiny depending what brand it is.
Also, naturally if you had bleached and dyed your hair pink, it would be pretty dull and unhealthy, so having shiny pink hair would look strange.

I'm glad someone put this thread up, as I'm considering getting back into wearing wigs so I can stop dying my hair for a bit :)

Absolutely true. A way around this is if you either dyed a human hair wig a bright colour yourself - even then some human wigs look 'wiggy' due to their construction, and there's always the chance of completely ruining the wig with a bad bleach job...

There's a girl in my class who wears wigs daily. She doesn't want to fry her hair like you mentioned. In fact, it's not uncommon for black women to wear wigs daily because of the fact that perms do such horrible damage to hair, and you are limited with what you can do.

I'd wear wigs daily but all I have is one. xD

I haven't yet, but I'd like to. I have very long hair naturally and don't want to cut it, but I had a ton of fun running around in a messy, short-haired wig at Supercon. (my first con ever!) I've never had short hair before and it was pretty fun. (And a lot of people thought it was my real hair, so apparently I looked convincing!) So now I think when winter rolls around, (because it's too hot to wear a wig in the summer down here) I might wear my black scruffy wig out. ^_^

What i usually do in public is wear the wig with a hat: Like, a beanie on my head or something. That way, it looks a little more real. You know, since they don't see how it poofs up from your hair, and they can't see roots.

yup ive heard about the annoying chavs ugh!!! such uncivilized jerks! :miffed:
you should do what I do; get ahold of these weave clips: http://sewmee.com/wordpress-mu/wp-content/uploads/254/mwefts3.jpg
they are pressure sensitive little combs and have a little silicone wrap on it so that once you snap it shut it stays put....sew them around the perimeter of the inside of the wig and maybe even on the inside of the wefts of the wig....this will allow you to snap it onto your hair at the roots to allow no slippage...then put it on and clip the various areas down to your hair...
and if someone were to tug on it it would be just like tugging your real hair cuz it actually clips tight enough so that it basically IS tugging your real hair *lols* :D

you can get them at drlocks.com, ikickshins.net or at local hair stores

If for casual wear - I don't mind people wearing wigs that are super colorful. One of my biology TA usually has a pink and purple hair. And she's really awesome. But this, of course, she dyes her blond hair. So it looks natural and functional.

If you're working professionally (ie. doctor, accountant), then I would stick to wearing wigs that are more Natural (blond, browns, etc. ) if you are planning to wear wigs daily.

So - it all depends on the occasion and quality of the wig. Some wigs look super natural while others, in an instant, looks SUPER fake (rainbow fro, for example).

Dying your hair isn't that expensive, and there are ways to make it fade slower, like washing it with cold water, and washing it less often. :) Garnier Fructis makes a wonderful bleaching kit that is only about $8. It sounds bad because of the price, but it works wonders. I can't find any pictures of it, but it comes with everything you need. It has a picture of a blonde boy on the front. Another good kit is RAW, but that one costs $12 and does not come with as much. If after you bleach it if it has some orange in it, you can get toner or a purple based shampoo and conditioner to get rid of the orange. If you don't care (the pink will be a different shade where the orange is) then that's less money you have to pay. The dye itself, is usually around $12.00 or a little less online, at Hot Topic, or Newbury Comics. So all together, cheapest but good quality, we're looking at... $20. Over time if it fades you can just pay the $12.00 again to put it right over the other pink and it'll come out bright again. If you just want it to stay pink. Not too bad. Of course there is SPLAT, which is also inexpensive and you can get at drug stores, but I'm a bit of a dye snob. >.<

i wear my more natural-colored wigs out every now and then. (usually blacks, browns and blondes, but i've worn a red wig out pretty often, and my TYL mukuro wig out once) P: not everyday, but sometimes i just feel like wearing one of my wigs rather than to style my own hair-- which is bleached and colored anyway lol.

my hair is short (and usually spiked), so when i have to look girly (usually in a dress or some elegant type of clothing) for any events or public holidays back home i wear this long black wig i got for a scrapped cosplay. XD my mom adores it since she wishes i was more girly HAHAHA.

I wear wigs in public every now and then (:
Once, I even went to work with one, and when I did a Macbeth play in the morning with a wig on, I wore it for the rest of the day at school.
I get bored of my hair rapidly.
Right now, it's brown that has blonde bits in it (The result of being forced to dye it back to black after bleaching it blonde)
A down side is comfort-wise. A lot of people find wigs uncomfortable to wear and I know some of my friends find that they give them headaches.
You should get used to wearing them first occasionally and then if you like, wear them out in public (:
If someone stares, they're probably just wondering how you got your hair so nice :D

I have yet to wear mine out just for daily use, though I've been super tempted to on days that my hair just doesn't feel like being nice to me and looks horrible. It's easier to put on a wig than fuss with my hair, but I don't have many natural colored or toned down looking wigs. Most of them are white XD.

I think it's a cool idea. I want to buy wigs for each semester I am in school and wear them hahaha. You should find a local wig shop, try some on and see what suits you before ordering them online only to find out you don't like them.

Also, wearing wigs for everyday use is nothing to be ashamed about at all.

I don't mind getting strange looks ;^^ as long as I think I look cute or neat I like being different. (:

I guess it matters how confident you are, I've also NEVER done anything drastic with my hair --just got bangs and it is a HUGE deal to me-- I've always had dirty blond hair that's all one length.

So wearing a bright wig is really fun to me x)

I do occationally. The best alternative is a half-wig. These are really easy to find in stores that cater black women. My hair tangles easily and is neither straight or curly. If I don't have time to properly heat set my hair, and I don't feel like wadding it up on my head, a half wig is great. Just put a headband over the spot where it attaches (the front 2-4" of your natural hair shows) and it'll look perfectly natural. As long as it's close to your natural colour at least.

I also wear full wigs every so often. Never colourful ones though. I usually just wear the styles that my own wispy think hair would never be able to manage.

I'd like to wear wigs since my natural hair is nothing special (it's dark brown, and most drastic thing I've done to mines was cutting some bangs xP). I haven't done so yet, but I'm definitely gonna give it a try.

I used to have hot pink hair and in order to have a normal job I bought a nice wig from a local wig store and only wore it wile at work.

I have heard that wearing a wig makes your hair fall out... but... lots of women wear wigs on a daily basis and still have beautiful hair so I'm not sure.

I love in AZ so wearing a wig for a whole day can get hot and I have to clean it a lot. Besides that... there isn't much of a problem.

Unfortunately, unless you got some really quality wigs it'd be blatantly obvious you were wearing a wig and it might just look weird. But I totally support it! Just try to find a more natural one with better fibers or human hair. :3

I've worn wigs and wigs with extensions out to club nights before but I've never done it on a daily basis. I'd only ever do it if it wasn't blatantly obvious (lack of scalp, too shiny etc) To the OP I think that the wig you bought looks great and I wouldn't be any the wiser judging from the photos you posted. My hair has been dyed A LOT as I've been dying it for 10 years now. It's currently an uncharacteristically normalish (reddy brown) colour as I made the mistake of dying it black and cutting most of it off which I absolutely hated!! It's now in that horrid half way stage where I'm trying to grow it back again but whatever I do it still looks hurrendous so yeah I'm tempted to wear some of my wigs. I'm thinking of trying to get it red and putting extensions in though.

If you need to wear a wig try to make sure if it is synthetic to get Kanekalon fibers... they're much more natural looking than that "just stepped out of a dollhouse" plastic cheaper plastic fiber.

The best I've experienced to take care of your hair under the wig is every now and then if you get the chance when in the bathroom if your scalp needs to breathe, let it. That's usually the main issue I've heard of with people losing their hair, your scalps skin needs to breathe too...

I would totally wear a wig everyday if it looked natural enough on me. I was thinking about buying a Korean wig, since all their wigs look very realistic, but the ordering process is a mess. Not sure if I wanna get lost in translation. t_t

I was thinking about wearing my red wig tomorrow to celebrate our 3rd anniversary of our marriage since cosplay brought me & my husband together.

US does have chavs, none to tons depending on the area, usually called something else.. like assholes. If you wear a wig and solid color hat while your out near those areas, it looks more natural.

I know this is an old topic but I'm curious if they have colorful lace/lace front wigs. I've only ever seen them in natural colors

I think I'm going to go down this route. I can't dye my hair, but I really dislike the natural colour, so I'm looking at at least trying a wig to see how it goes :3

I totally would wear wigs a majority of the time, but I'd feel too weird wearing them out in public & not in cosplay. It's either wear the whole thing or none at all with me. :c

I wear them sometimes when I don't feel like straightening my hair. =D Though the itchy head thing can become a problem, I still enjoy a little difference now and again.

I've actually been considering this! I've relaxed my hair so much that it's actually pretty thin at this point, getting a wig would save me from premature baldness! I just need to find one that isn't too shiny so I can get used to the feeling before getting a human hair one.

I wear my wigs all the time. Color and style never matters.
I have thin hair, and I've thought about just shaving my hair and wearing
wigs all the time.

I sometimes wear my blonde wig from my Mello cosplay when I'm sick of my own hair, or when I do not want to be recognized. With that wig, and sun glasses, it seriously does not look like me ^^

I have multiple gyaru style wigs that i wear on a daily basis. I have very short hair so it's not to much of a hassle to get on :)

A problem that I have is that mine sometimes look crazy shiny inharsh daylight but look perfectly natural indoors. What do I do or where can I get a wig that doesn't do that?

Genetics kinda screw me on the hair thing. Its pretty damn thin (and I'm only 22). So i keep my hair to a buzz. But when in public, chilling with friends, I wear wigs. Unnatural ones at it too, lol. Kinda started from a casual Marluxia cosplay I wore once or twice out and it kinda stuck. I personally love it.

Here's some pics:

Being all pink and everything and unnatural looking, I'm always being asked if this is my real hair, lol. Which is all the better for me.

I wear my pink (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2930171/)or my short blond wig (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2999062/)in public alot. I'm sick of my brown hair & will never dye it again. A few times I went to the mall wearing my pink wig. I even got my drivers lic. pic with my blond wig. Some girls that work at a Sally's salon shop thought it was cool. Other people I get the usual comment "Is that your real hair?" if I'm wearing my red or pink wigs. When I went to lowes wearing my red wig with the hat this old lady asked me about it. I explained it to her & she said that it was a great idea. Then her husband jokes saying maybe he should get a wig. He's completly bald. LOL

I wear my wigs out in public....even to the nightclubs :)
I'm not afraid of what people will say to me because most of the time I get a positive response. Most of my wigs are short, easy to manage and in an everyday style....even though the color is pure white or bright blue or something.
Honestly we all have our bad hair days and sometimes a hat just doesn't cut it.

I don't wear my brightly colored ones or extremely long ones outside conventions, but I have worn my shirt black wig or short grey-blue wig to NYC for the heck of it, when going out with friends. I don't know why I do it, I just like a dramatic look every now and then.

Lol, changing my original post a bit; I do have one wig I LOVE to wear out, but to date it only seems like I wear it out on trips out with my boyfriend (and we're long-distance, so shopping trips or days out are in a completely different city for me, also fun as hell). I freaking LOVE my Aoi wig. http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2700648/
The colour, and the style, is just so awesome, looks great on me, and I get endless compliments. I thought about getting my own hair done like that, but I don't have hair with enough volume/thickness to look right with exactly that 'do. So more wigs for me. XD

this is a pretty common practice for a lot of japanese cosplayers. They style their actual hair to look like the characters then wear a wig for work etc.

There are a couple women who come into the store where I work who wear wigs every day. It can be due to hair loss from any cause but they wear them. I would wear one if I wouldn't get way too hot. My newest one is a nice lace-front, so I'd totally wear it.

I don't do it because I think it'd just seem a little strange to me (not saying that people who wear them for everyday life are strange) and not to mention that they're a total pain to put on and wig-induced headaches.

My wigs usually look nicer than my real hair though.

I only have the Miku wig, I wouldn't wear it in public unless I'm cosplaying. But sometimes I do wear pink hair extensions to match up my pink outfits. xD
