Hey everyone. :spinner:
I'm going to cosplay Link from The Legend of Zelda. I decided to make the Hylian Shield myself. It's going well, but I need help at some points.

-I chose wood as the material. I already know how to work with wood, but, just in case, is there something I should be aware of?

-I'm looking for something to paint the wood to make it look like steel. What could I use?

- What's best, spray paint or a brush?

Thanks.

Spray. You can get battered steel spray paint at most craft stores. Getting a battered look will turn up better in pictures, won't look so flat. Wood's good, but it'll be heavy. I'm going to be making a Link myself. I'm hoping to have his costume stage combat strong. Wood will be REALLY heavy after a few hours at a con. I'm thinking of making mine out of light weight sheet aluminum wrapped around a Styrofoam core. The foam will be light and a shock absorber, and the metal will be able to take a beating and give me the right sound, as well as a little weight to look convincing when I hold it.

Just make sure that no matter what material you use, PRIMER is your friend, and a few coats of a matte-finish sealer at the end will do amazing things. Nothing too shiny, remember that. In pictures it'll kill the effect. You want something that looks like it's been used, so a little weathering will keep the shield from looking washed out and flat in pictures.
