Sorry.. I know..many yuna threads...but I've searched..no solutions!

1) What should the diameter of Yuna's staff approximately be? I just want an idea. And how tall in length?

2) what type of material should be used for summoner yuna's sleeves and top, that don't wrinkle too much and such?

3) For wedding Yuna...how do you put up her hairstyle? I'm horrible with updoes and I want to be as accurate as possible.

4) For the beads attached to her obi...did you guys just buy the beads from a store or something...? how do u get the accurate stuff?

5) what type of fabric should be used for yuna's obi?

6) Approximately how thick should each pleat be? A measurement would be nice :D

i made my staff according to my own height so it looked correctly proportioned ^_^

you can use stretch cotton for the top =3 i used swimsuit material stuff for the sleeves o_O i'm so amazed it took the dye.

it IS possible to have that exact hairstyle even if your hair is really short o_o i got it done for homecoming but i got it done at a salon and it took forever @_@ it's much easier if you hair is longer because you can just put a small clip underneath and if you hair is long enough it'll cover the clip =3

mine are actually fabric lol ^^; and then i have hand made beads on the bottom =D

i used satin ^^ for my obi. i think it's quite shiny in the pics from the sending so that's why i chose it.

4) For the two obi ties I've made as commissions, I made my own beads. The squat round ones and diamond-shaped ones were out of Sculpey, and the long ones were actually the cardboard tubes that are on the crosspieces of some coathangers (the ones you hang pants from and stuff).

5) With the obi I made, I used a beautiful raw silk from Hancock's. It comes on long rolls, not bolts, if you want to look for it. It's a bit pricey, but I had a coupon ^^ The downside to using this was how thin it was - I had to use much more lining and interfacing materials than I had previously imagined.

I also made my own beads, my boyfriend found me several screenshots that showed the details of the beads. I bought a pleated blue skirt for $1 at the salvation army instead of making one, so i cant help you there. my staff is about 4 1/2 feet long, i used a shower curtain rod, and the head is about a 1 foot wide. for the obi, i just used yellow cotton, it wasnt shiny but i liked the effect in the end, i hand painted and tied my obi. ok now for the hair-do info, i had my friend put my hair in a high ponytail and then we used bobby pins to pin down some pieces of hair to the top of my head to make that spiky look that hers has, just so you know, it isnt actually possible for Yuna's hair to do the style in the way it is supposed to be with it being as short as it is, i have my hair in the same style as Yuna's and its actually a little longer than hers and i had a hard time getting my hair to do that, oh well it still looked nice.

hey do you still have the screenshots for the detailed beads...?
^_^

i think my hair will be long enough by May to put it up in that hairstyle.

I was wondering too when I played the game, did she miraculously grow hair over night lol

Yep! It certainly is possible! You can see in the picture that her hair is just like Yuna's and Yuffieleonheart's hair is the exact length of Yuna's hair. *which is short* Tis definately possible.

you guys are awesome..answering all of my questions O_O

I now have a clearer idea on how to make this costume..

*sighs*

Another question...the flower around the obi...any suggestions on how to make it?

Out of foam perhaps?

Yuna
10-14-2003, 07:36 AM
I would use leather. First timeI made it it was out of foam and it would always rip when I put the string through it. Then I had it cut out of plastic with a layer of felt glued on top. That also didn't look that great; while it was sturdy, it would constatly scratch my arm and one time I bleed. My last one is made from leather. It's heavier them foam, but doesn't rip, but doesn't hurt. I honestly think that's what Yuna's is made out of in the game because leather has a natural curl to it, as does the ends of the petals on Yuna's.

... talk about a long winded response.

About the hair: Clip in exstension. You can find them at any wig store. Find one that matches your hair color and there ya go. You still have to do it up, but once you clip it in, your style will always hold up, no matter how long you wear it.

Yuna or anyone else who can help:
I have a couple questions too.
My last obi attached with a snap around my waist, while the bow was just sew to one end of the obi. It does not look great. Therefore, I am remaking it. How are you attaching yours--the obi itself to the waist, and the bow to the obi?
Second, I'm starting Wedding Yuna. I bought a pattern, but I'm not sure if it will work for the specifics of the costume. Did you use a certain pattern and just make adjustments?
thanks guys! Your advice really helps.

for wedding yuna i made my own pattern. i looked through some professional ones first tho and got some ideas on wat the shape should be, then took my measurements and made a scratch pattern, it was a little difficult, but in the end it was worth it.

My obi was tied on like a corset in the back. The obi bow is them tied onto the obi base... somehow. I don't know how it's done cause Adella does it and it's always tied on behind me so I can't see it @__@;

I don't remember what pattern that was used for my costume, it was 2 Vouge patterns that were modified, altered and merged into one. It was a feat among men. Your best bet would be to start with a base pattern that can get the gnereal shape, then alter where nessesary. I do that for like, 90% of my costumes.

Hmm, I'm currently working on a costume for that and I've not done it yet, but my mother's going to help me with floral wire that will keep the obi in place ... without all this starch I'm hearing SO MUCh about ... and without the satin ... and just plain yellow cloth. Wooh.

lainey
10-24-2003, 07:21 AM
well it's up to your preference and interpretation ^_^

floral wire...now that's a thought...!
*works at a florist* it's really bendable though and it can easily get squashed or whatever i think.

interfacing (iron on if you're lazy!) would be a good idea, to get a thicker material. it's cheap stuff and it'll make your bow nice and sturdy. makes sense.

that's what i believe anyhow, i'm going with some wire from home depot...

weeeee...so regular spray paint goes on fine...?

does it matter if it's acrylic or some special plastic type...?

i can't just use regular acrylic paint either eh?

Yuna
11-06-2003, 12:09 AM
I just used regular spray paint, but I'm sure acrylic would do just fin as well =3 If the paint doesn't hold well, put a layer of paint thinner over the tube, let it dry, then paint it =3

*is a little late*
just a quick sugestion for the obi...i went the interfacing route, but then i started experimenting with it, and if you use interfacing AND some fluffy fleece it will give it more body...more like the cgi model of her. it also makes it more stiff, but the downside is the fluff. denser=better. (i hope we're still talking about summoner yuna...)

this page they're 10-14 inches long and 9.50 per 1/4 pound. Feathers are pretty light you might get like 500 or so maybe more? I dunno how much exactly maybe if you email them and ask.

Trance - you can also use felt, too - it has a similar thickness, but is a lot more densely woven and strong. I used that in the one I made, and it helped a lot ^_^

You can get heavyweight interfacing--for yuna...i think iron-on interfacing would be easier to deal with :)

I've also read that some people used wire or cardboard to keep the obi up. For mine i just used doulbe layers of heavyweight interface :)

Hope this helped <3

Feathers are REALLY light. One pound of feathers seems like WAY too much. Usually when you see packs of feathers sold they are only 10g max.

However since you're after the long turkey feathers your best bet is to contact them directly to get a quantity quote.

For the obi and sleeves ... even though it looks nice ... regular fabric could work too ... but I found out that my obi was a little hmm "floppy" or "thick" after I finished with it. My sleeves however looked decent.

For the staff ... I'd say measure its proportions to yourself ... nothing bothers me more than an unproportioned weapon when I see a BEAUTIFUL cosplay that possibly cost A LOT of money to make.

For pictures of what I did, and how it looks decent you can see www.geocities.com/shainaindovino/FFX_Holloween.html ...

I'll probably have them uploaded to my domain soon, but for now, why not use geocities' bandwidth?

you know i changed my mind about the feathers:
http://www.featherplace.com/ic/fp/AGS.html

these seem like an alright size...
1/4 of a pound gets me 750 feathers O_O

i know Yaya used 600 feathers...but these feathers aren't selected...so i might have to toss some O_o plus...i want to be more accurate and have the two layers of feathers...

and i might still want a 1/4 of a pound for the turkey feathers...for the wings... that would be like 60 feathers O_o

and IF i have leftovers...

i was planning on giving some to heki and selling them on ebay :D

1) Yuna's staff should come up to about your chest, so proportion that to fit with your height. ^^ The staff head looks a bit larger than her head.

It's better to do it with craft foam. I personally prefer to paint the entire flower to get the right colors, than draw the design on with brown sharpie. Here's progress picture of the one I did for Kakashi101 if it helps

this is correct, but it can be difficult to mesure correctly; and often something that is correct on paper doesnt work in reality.
it should be aproximatly 3/4 of your height.
the materials used can alter the scale. mine is made mostly of unberella pieces and cardbord which made correct scaling difficult.

pelmet vyleen is excelent for the flower thing; its strong but flexable, can be a pain to paint and con come in a variety of colours. i made it in two sections, thw outer flower and inner circle, painted with acrylic and sewed them together

ok. this kind of pertains to FFX-2 Yuna, but I figured I'd post it here anyways.

I am currently working on a Black Mage Yuna. I know how to make the hairtail, but I've got an issue attaching it to my hair. I know some people who do it by putting on an elastic hairband, and ponytailing it on.

MY hair is cut REALLY short in the back.
so I have no idea how to pull off this sucker.

Anna
07-22-2007, 10:31 PM
When I did it I used a combo of elastic, and two very large hairclips. My hair was pretty short too, but it's also unbelievably thick (I have never had my hair cut without hearing that from the stylst XD ) so that might not work so well if your hair is thin.

Since it's Black Mage Yuna you COULD attach it to the hat. It's supposed to sag in the back anyways. It would really depend on the total weight of the tail.

But all-in-all people never seem too adamant on critiquing the exact placement of the tail. Just whether or not it's there, and not just sewn onto the shirt. (I've seen way too many songstresses who've done that one -_-; )

Well...unfortunately for me, my hair is exceedingly thin. Dx I'll try it...

The hat? I could do that, but I want to have the hairtail attachable to my head, because it'd be fun to wear around school and stuff...see the reactions I get...

Texas schools have bans against attachable hair pieces like that. *looked at your profile, and lives in good 'ole Tx. personally* and you could always just pin it on to a Hoodie. Other than that I can only suggest growing your hair out.

What I usually do with my rat tail o' doom is attach it to the back of the costume with safety pins. That way, it's attached to something much stronger and with a greater surface area, so the weight isn't all in one place. So in your case, I'd go with Anna's suggestion of attaching it to the hat, but also attaching it to the back of your costume, so the tail doesn't pull at your hat.

Oh, and for the wedding updo question -
I had something similar to Yuna's updo done for my prom (except it was curly instead of straight). I remember the whole trick was to use multiple pony tails, all placed around a center point where a normal high ponytail would be, and then extra hair from around the sides of these ponytails had been left out before, and were then used to cover up the hairbands, and pinned into place. Then, all you'd have to do is straighten the ponytails and use wax to spike them out.

(Although, I'd just go with Yuna's idea and buy a hair attachment. XD)

if you want, using felt for the flower on her obi won't pull out the fabric and rip, and you can fabric paint the design on. it worked well enough for me (for my first ever con-costume) so hopefully that's a less pricey option...

It's a cotton rope used to fill things out for sewing basically. It comes in a lot of diameters, and such, but will basically just look like a rope but made with a lot more fibers.

Also you might get a better answer than what I've said if you try asking what it is in the General costume help section, since it's more of a sewing notions question rather than a specific costume question.

Can someone help me on dyeing my armbands for Summoner Yuna?

How much dye/water should I use? Should I use a bucket, or a spray bottle?

Thanks!

You should be able to at least fill a LARGE spray-bottle twice with your mix. Make sure to practice on some scrap fabric first to make sure the color isn't too strong, though it should still be pretty bright when you're spraying.

Don't use 3d fabric paint, it gives this nasty shiny look and overall just does not fit well. I would suggest using regular acrylic paint and a fine paintbrush. Try using a pencil to trace the the entire design first!! Then keep that fine point paintbrush constantly clean and you should have a nice clean look.

I used 3d fabric paint, and I absolutely refuse to take it out. It looks bad D:

I don't know about acrylic paint, but I used nonpuffy, matte fabric paint. You can find it at michael's.

Does anyone know how to attach the pair of strings that wrap around Yuna's obi? I'm adamant against attaching them by glue.

Hello all!
I am getting ready to work on a songstress Yuna cosplay. The most perplexing question is how to attach the side skirt and how to make it.
It looks like kind of loose Us that have been gathered at the top and attached in tiers.
Anyone have good advice?
