I just came across these dolls in Target and I love the line of Dolls and was wondering has anyone else has a hankering to cosplay these characters?

www.monsterhigh.com

They currently have mini webisodes, I do not know if this doesn't count as a cartoon series.

I am. My friend and I want to do Draculaura and Cleo (me as Cleo). We're trying to rope people into it so we can get a whole group!

Oh mannn I'm glad other people are thinking of cosplaying this! I'm trying to get a group together myself, so far we have Ghoulia, Draculaura and Lagoona.

Group for which con?

I want to do a Frankie.

Also, here is a neat link I found while surfing around for pictures of Frankie...

It's so nice not be alone in my nerdiness. XD I'd love to do Clawdeen's Dawn of the Dance outfit, or maybe Cleo or Lagoona. X3 Who knows, with the new book coming out this spring, we actually be, y'know... Recognized. XD

The more I look at Clawdeen's DotD outfit, the more I wanna make it. T_T But that would mean another bout with my old enemy... airbrush tanning. D:

I think I'm going to do Draculaura sometime over the summer<3

I'm thinking of either Lagoona, Draculaura, or Frankie... Draculaura would be easy to make, Frankie's personality is most like mine, and Lagoona is really cute. And I also hate the unnatural skin tone factor, but paint should work once I get the technique right...

Any suggestions???

I'm doing Draculaura right now! Ironic since I usually hate pink. A friend of mine is going to be Clawdeen. The only thing I'm stressing over is Draculaura's hair. Everything else is relatively simple (vest, skirt with yoke, petticoat, leggings, umbrella), but that wig is going to give me hell.

Dude! I wish I saw this thread earlier! I reallyreallyreally want to cosplay Lagoona! (Some of my character design weaknesses are curly hair and blue skin so I'm doubly smitten... if she had an eyepatch I think my head would explode!)

When I got my new-year bonus the first thing I bought was a Lagoona doll, for "cosplay research" lol.

I've got the makeup and webbing all figured out (so much love for blue! (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2832550/)), but I've been agonizing over the wig for a good nine months now.

If any of you are going to Anime Weekend Atlanta this year, a couple of friends and I shall attempt to put together a Dead Tired group (The name of the line of dolls in pajamas, so, basically pajama-wear, haha) and we're trying to get every character! So far we have myself as Draculaura, a Ghoulia, and a Lagoona. So yeah, if any of you are going to that particular con, we should totally do this! :>

Also, to the cosplayer wondering about how to do Draculaura's wig- Did you figure out a way? For myself, I was thinking of buying the Innocent wig from Amphigory, straightening the pigtails and styling them to be all bouncy like hers are, and then buying a few strands of the pink Manic Panic hair strips to put into it. It's going to be quite expensive, so that's why I'm asking if you figured out an easier way!

Were you talking to me? even if you weren't I'm going to give my two cents on it xD

I'm going to combine two wigs into one: a long black one as the base (I may need to get extensions to add body to the back once I separate the locks for the tails) and cut up a pink wig of the same style/length to sew the wefts into the black. Cut bangs into the base, add the wefts, then stub the pigtails and create them on their own before attaching to the wig. I've been getting loads of advice from someone with a lot of experience with difficult/elaborate wigs, so hopefully I can keep turning to her when/if I hit roadblocks.

Here's a long, black wig that already has pigtails parting in back (http://shop.cosplay.com/cct01-black-twin-tail-wig.html), to save you the trouble of the wefting. :) Sounds like you have a great plan, can't wait to see your Draculaura. ^_^

^ I looked at that one, but I'm not liking it 100%. Mainly because it's tails are up on the head rather than at the base of the neck (like Draculaura's), but also because it's so thin in terms of tail fullness and I don't think I'd wanna mess with them. I think if I just start from scratch I can get it to sorta the way I want. Thanks though! :)

Just popping in here to subscribe to this thread. :) I love the Monster High dolls, and considered a Ghoulia costume for Dragon*Con this year (the only con I'm attending this summer). But... I already have 3 costumes I have to finish by then. So I'll live vicariously through all of you instead. ;)

Yeah, the pigtails are too high, but I still think that taking them out and putting them in again lower would be a lot easier than having to back-part a normal wig. ^^;; Plus, there aren't really any wigs out there that are going to be thick enough for this without adding a bunch of wefting... Most wigs will look that thin or worse if pulled into tails :(

Stormraven24
05-27-2011, 04:11 PM
^ That does bring up a question: is the wig just style with the hair pulled up, or is it fixed so the tails are gonna stay no matter what? If the latter, then I'd just as soon get a plain wig and add in no-sew wefts like Katie Bair's tutorials just to fill it out in the back, then sew in the pink wefts myself and style from there.

If it's not obvious, it's been quite a while since I bought a wig xD

You could also go with clip-on pigtail extensions... then they'd be easily movable. There are a couple here: http://www.cosplayanimewigs.com/kaexwi.html One is curly but looks like it has more volume? Maybe you could straighten that one if you want longer/fuller tails.

Of course, those are solid black too, so you'd still need to weft in the pink. >_<

I LOVE MONSTER HIGH!!!! I've liked the dolls since they came out, but the other night my friend got me into it more and now I'm so obsessed! I want to do every Cleo outfit, haha!!

^The pigtails are totally moveable/adjustable! I bought this wig as a base for a Sailor Moon wig~ The pigtails are just held apart with ribbon, so it's up to you to position/style them~ and also, it may not look it, but it was superrrrrrr thick! I would most definitely recommend getting that wig, because even if you have to add thickness anyways, it's already thicker than most wigs out there! :D

Oh, and Emrys: maybe try using a wig that's meant for Nia from Gurren Lagann?? It's already pale blonde with the light blue streaks and curly! :DD

I have good news! The petticoat for Draculaura is almost done! I've just got one more line of stitches to do, then attach a closure to the back and she's done! Then I can start finalizing how I'm going to do the skirt. All I can say is thank god I'll be wearing pants underneath; I tried the petticoat on and it just barely covers my butt @_@

I just got Spectra yesterday, and looking at her outfit and her official art, I am pretty sure that she was designed to give stubborn cosplayers something to do. Silk, leather, tulle, and chains all at the same time? Plus the multicoloured hair that every girl in the series and some of the guys have already? Ow.

Oh, and the fact that her hands and feet are TRANSPARENT. Creative license, ahoy.

Briana-Sama
10-03-2011, 02:22 PM
Jisu, what you can do for her hair is get an orange wig and style it, and follow this tutorial (http://fav.me/d2hvz3e) for painting the stripes on :) That's immediately what I thought when I saw her xD -is contemplating doing her or Cleo as well-

But otherwise, I'm just about done with my Clawdeen outfit for KatsuCon this year :'D I'll have a Draculaura with me, and we're trying to convince other people to join us but no such luck so far xD I bought the jacket I need to alter today, along with the necklaces, shirt, and skirt. Will be working on the petticoat, ears, and shoes soon, and my wig is coming in with a group order from taobao~ :3

I've made a little bit of progress on my Cleo costume, but I still have a looong way to go! I finished some of the wrap fabric, but I think I might have to make some more. Here's a pic!
http://i43.tinypic.com/10x8t2h.jpg
You can see a bit of the process in the photo. I used painters tape to make the design on the fabric, numbered them all 1, 2 or 3 so I wouldn't get confused, peeled off all of the 1's, painted that area black with fabric paint, did the same thing with the 2's with turquoise paint, and then just peeled off the rest since my fabric was yellow! ^^ It took a while, but it was so fun to do! :D
I also was cutting up gold, sparkly ribbon today to use as the tinsely stuff for my wig. I'm excited! ^^

Stormraven24
01-12-2012, 03:23 PM

Gathering materials for a Lagoona cosplay right now and my sis is gonna be Draculara. There's so much detail work to do on these dolls that you don't even realize till you start planning out the costumes, and OMG the wigs! Not to mention that all the references are different. Stormraven24 - Yeah, ordering custom fabric can be expensive, but depending on how much fabric paint you need, and how time consuming the design is, it could be just as 'expensive' to paint it. But, if you have a lot of patience and Michael's/Joanns coupons, go for it!! hehe

Also before I decided on Operetta I was going to make Lagoona and i have a few pieces i want to sell. a blue body suit, platform flip flops, and a styled lagoona wig. if any one is interested message me, i will send u pics and we can discuss a fair price~ all are brand new and never worn. the body suit and shoes are basically the base, they still need things added to them. I would be happy to finish the flipflops for you and the wig is already styled beach wave platinum blonde hair with ice blue steaks in it

Hey all! I feel really bad about advertising in a forum, but I don't know where else to turn!

A couple friends and I are planning on making a high-end MH cosplay music video, and we have to make costumes for 13 people....the only problem with our plan, is that we dont have the money.
We have made a kickstarter to raise the money (hopefully!) Please give it a look and spread the word!

....why are you asking people to help fund your personal project? Why don't you just wait until you can save up the money?

Miyabi-

We just graduated college, I am getting married, one friend has a baby, etc etc. There are only two of us making the costumes and we just need some help..just like everyone else on kickstarter...we don't have the means to an end.

it's not a bad thing to ask for help when you need it :)

Do you already have the other people lined up for the project? It seems unfair that the three of you are handling all of the funding for it. :(
It might help with your funding if the costs are divided up amongst the other people who want to participate as well and give each of them a small personal goal to work towards in addition to your Kickstarter. (and then whatever you earn from your Kickstarter can be a nice bonus to the budget!)

Yeah, we got everybody, which we're excited about =) Sadly about 98% of our group is in high school and thus jobless lol. We're probably going to end up buying things bit by bit in the end and build it up slowly.

That's probably the best way to go about it! It's usually what I have to do when I want to do a big costume since I have bills and life-stuff too. (being an adult sucks..lol).
I also sign up on all kinds of fabric/craft stores email listings to get coupons to help out too! If you get everyone to sign up/sign up with multiple emails you can have multiple coupons!

I've been hankering to cosplay someone from Monster High for a while now, but there was always something I'd get hung up about with each character. I just discovered the newest character Catrine DeMew now though, and she's like everything I could ever possibly want in a Monster High character cosplay, so I'm 75% sure I'm going to be cosplaying her now! I do wish we could see her from the front, though, so I could figure out how the neckline of the dress is cut and what the sunglasses are supposed to look like...was she in any of the TV specials? (I don't have regular access to cable here at college so I haven't been able to watch most of them)

Not yet, she will show up in the Scaris special in the spring.

I know this is sort of an old thread, but what are peoples suggestions for the body paint? :o

And what about wigs? I am probably gonna do Frankie's normal outfit and was thinking of getting a malinda in silver and then wefting in a lot of black streaks- would that work?

Cleos the same idea but blakc wig, blue/gold streaks

Have use two products for my Venus cosplay in makeup but, I recommend using the We Love Colour tights (http://www.welovecolors.com/Shop/LycraSolidColorMicroFiberTights.htm) to make arm covers. Body paints has it pros and con.
Dusty Green is the closest to her colour but a touch darker Pastel Mint is slightly brighter then her colour, I used Mint Green for Venus. http://www.welovecolors.com/Info/Colors.aspx

I loved how well PAX worked on my arm a bust/collar area but my hand/palms peel as I didn't'y have a handler (it clings to nylon straps and rips >_< ). The best water activated paint is Wolfe FX but again is dose rubs off onto my clothes unlike pax.

I recommend the tight for the arms and led (you can also do her stitching onto the tights as well ;) ) and paint the pace and neck in either Wolfe FX (https://www.wolfefx.com/index.php/product-lines/hydrocolor-make-up) or a Creme (http://www.mehron.com/StarBlend_Cake_Makeup_p/110.htm) base.

The nice thing about the creme is that you can pre mix the colour before hand to match your tights. With Wolfe FX you have to mix as you go it you don't have an exact colour. My Venus cosplay I mixed Mint into White the shade to get pale green out of my Wolfe FX shades.

Nice to meet you to!

I just ordered the base for my frankie wig today and my sister and I are scratching ehads on what to use as the base for her scaris Cleo wig- we were thinking a luthien or a slightly straightened claudia because we want a little wave + that length

Ani_BEE
01-21-2014, 10:39 AM
I'd go with a claudia as there are less layers in the wig then the Luthien.

From personal experience the more layer of wefts you add in the more likely the wig will tangle. ;) The second time I wore Venus I chopped 6" off the bottom. lol

even though i hate feeling psammish, an update is in order:

- my wig thus far has -drum roll- one black streak.
haven't had much time to work on it /dies

- got my blue plaid and its almost perfect except i've been having to hand paint on the red stripes, so far 2/4 peices have been done D:

- my tights came and sadly are too blue for my liking but are the correct tonality, so I'm gonna try and dye them the proper shade of green.

Oh, I got super into Monster High when it first came out (saw the music vid on TV, looked it up and watched all the webisodes), loved all the outfits, and felt kinda weird about it cause I'm in college...glad to know there are other people who love it, too!

If I had a group I might attempt a cosplay, but I don't know anyone else into it and its not something I'd want to cosplay alone. So I shall live vicariously through all of you! I did see two elementary-age girls cosplaying as Frankie and Draculaura, and it was the cutest thing ever.

I have a weird urge to cosplay Honey Swamp - which is just way beyond my skill set at the moment so I'm posting here hoping someone else might be trying to work with her? I sort of just, want to stalk and clap. I bought the doll the other day and she's too gorgeous for words.

Alas, beautiful as she is, Honey is not on my list of the many monsters I owuldn't mind doing :c Really though for honey the hardest part is probably the wig, and after that the skirt which you oculd probably fabric paint :3

to be honest I'm not clever enough with wigs to even guess where to begin there outside of fusing a couple afro wigs

Ani_BEE
03-13-2014, 01:33 PM
Actually if i get the chance to do another MH cosplay I was going to do Honey Swamp. ;)

Arda has the perfect shade of wig for her in Ocean Green, and you can add Mint (AR008) highlights to it.

The only thing I can see being and issue if the ivy on her legs and arm. I was thinking of creating a cast of my one leg and one arm with this product so that a have a form to stretch the legging over to do the ivy in silicon and paint it to match.

Hey gals i have a couple questions on fabric and materials, and i forgot that if there is a spot that can help here may lie the answer. If no one can assist that's okie, i understand :) Huge thank you to any and all fabric suggestions and etc though. (^0^)

Alrighty so i'll be making this outfit of Clawdeen's 13 Wishes outfit and was a bit puzzled on what fabric i should use for the dress. I was almost thinking a stretch sateen because it is a form fitting dress, but at the same time it's a bit formal. As well as the fact i'll need to screen print or stencil my designs on, So really i wanted to get a second opinion/idea.

Also i had a question for the under-netting, now it could be my eye, but looking around Jo'Anns and Hancock's i couldn't really find any near it. I figured the gold i always paint if needed, but finding netting that's familiar to it is what i'm worried about not finding.

Here a few references pictures, once again Thank you sooo much for any help!!
