I'm getting back into cosplay and Japanese fashion, and one thing I've always wanted is a school satchel. Not a randoseru, but one of the over-the-shoulder ones.
The problem is, what I've found online is very expensive.

I've found this one at Blue Inc. - http://www.blueinc.co.uk/Product/44013_Satchel.aspx
It's inexpensive and the right sort of shape, but I've noticed that the satchels I see in anime and manga don't usually have the two pockets on the front.

Close enough or bothersome imperfection?

if it will bother you, don't get it. i'm searching through the sites i buy bags on to see if i can find any that match the ones you're referring to.

i'll edit my post if i find one :)

They usually sell those at conventions (~$25 I think)

All I can say is that the Japanese must either have no homework or tiny textbooks. My books would not even dream of fitting in one--I think my organic chemistry textbook is probably bigger than the bag itself O_O

But I digress--

I think this looks actually more like what you might be looking for:

A more expensive, but assuredly made of higher quality material so it will last longer and you'd be able to use it for things other than cosplay if you so chose.

This is a pretty nice place to get those :)

They sell a pretty good assortment of cute bags, skirts, cardigans and more

I would say go with the quality, although more pricey, one. You're bound to love it more and it'll be what you want. I know money is always an issue but if you're going to be using it a lot then I'd say go for it.
