I've seen a vast number of tutorials explaining how to make headset replicas from various different materials.

But are there any tutorials that allow you to modify an existing and functional pair so that they will still work as headphones?

I guess I'm just reluctant to buy a headset to then demolish it, if that makes sense.

I have been playing with a few ideas. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2IQcsmee7o. This video will show you how to make them with instructions that include headphones, so no outside work :) I'm a huge Vocaloid fan so I love answering the questions ^-^

if u build a base over the headphone itll still work, tho im gonna tell u know that u actually dont want to use real headphones at a con cause u cant hear. even the ones made from non working headphones cant be heard from easily. Its much easier if you do it out of a headband n foam.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm making Magnet headphones, but the base headphones I'm buying are 8.99, and, whilst they would be perfect, it's a bit of a waste of money if I'm going to have to cut the wire, and make them unusable. Is there any way I could avoid cutting the wire so that I can still use them, but somehow manage to conceal to wire so that you can't see it?

What character are you doing? If its like Miku or luka you could prob hide the wires in the wig however it's a little tougher to do if it's kaito or Len or rin. Id still recommend not using a pair of headphones but if u have already bought them then ya........

One day, I would love to make a functional pair of Magnet headphones--not for cosplay, but just to have. Just rock out on the bus or something. XD

Don't bother hiding the wire. People will be more awe-inspired that way.

And you don't need to change headphones to listen to music.

I've made a pair using some old airplane headphones, and what I did was remove the foam covers on the earpieces, then I crocheted some new covers. I sewed the butterfly wings onto the new covers, and wrapped up the wire under one of them. The way I wrapped it made it possible for me to pull the wire out to the length I needed to listen to my ipod comfortably on the bus :)
