Hello,

BAAF reps at AnimeNext this year announced that the dates and location for 2004 are officially "to be determined". Previously they had stated on their website that it would be Labor day weekend back in the Mariott Marquis, but I'm not sure that this is the case anymore.

Praise the lord! The man (aka jerkholes at the Mariott) were keepin BaaF down in the MM....granted it was highly convient to get to....maybe they'll have a bigger area for the game room

I really hope it's a better location too. MM is great and all but that was to much.

Cant they have it some place where i dont have to walk up 7 phlights of stairs when they break down --;;

I doubt that since other places are expensive and I think they have a contract with Mariott til 2005. So we must suffer broken escaltors for 2 more years lol XD.

If we're lucky the money BAAF brought in for them will help them fix them by next year. lol

I think despite that they're having money problems.......

TheAnarCHris

Money problems? No way! BaaF attendance nearly doubled since last year without AX attached. This is an industry ran con, (ie CPM, ADV, TokyoPop,) so I doubt it's a money issue....unless ppl are just being cheap

Yes, BAAF is an industry run for-profit convention, but if you add up all the numbers you can see why they'd be in the hole. Renting space in Times Square is *not* cheap. And neither is flying over 10+ Japanese Guests. Heck the flights alone, assuming first-class, would cost $100K+!

BTW, ADV and Tokyopop were not involved in BAAF this year for political reasons, I suspect. I think the only Anime companies that sponsored the event were CPM & Raijin.

I knows, I was just naming companies as example.

Tokyopop was a main sponsor of this years BAAF... they were posted all over and they were right on your tickets and lanyard that was ginen to you when you signed in. They had plenty of sponsors so flying the guest shouldn't have been the money issue... probably the hotel and being in Times Square in the risky NY.. well no SOOO risky but you get the pick. Although the staff were volunteers there still had to be security guards on duty and BAAF does run all night so the equipment and such costs money too... I''m not an expert bu the companies like Mitshubishi (spelling) Tokyopop, ADV and Rajin can't be lacking in money... with TokyoPop coming out with new Manga every month and all the new anime's that ADV have been dubbing... and cars.. they sell really well. That give away raffle car in the dealer's room was nice. I don' think money was a BIG problem... if you know what I mean.

I ran into one of the former big wigs at BaaF yesterday at a comic shop. Seems like BaaF 2k4 aint happening unless they find a new sponser ;-;

I hope there is a BAAF 04, even with their problems this year NYC does deserve a con...

hikura
12-16-2003, 02:50 PM
I agree with KaineMazwell.NYC does deserve a good size con but it needs to be held in a place where it can be handled properly for such a event. While the marriot was good it isn't good enough for BAAF.Just to damn small.I mean you had the same problems for two years running.I know there would the cost "problem" but it would be easily handled due to the attendance.Plus this way if they had a larger space they could do everything properly.Perfect example of a con that learned from it's past is Animeboston. It learned it needed more space and worked on it.While yes it is still held in the same hotel as it was this year they rented additional space for itslef plus it is expanding in 2005 to a major convention center/sports arena. If BAAF has to be held away from midtown and what not it would be a good thing cause it would help the growth of the con.

Eriol

Plenty of other cons out there.
Find them here: http://www.anime-cons.com/

There are plenty of cons, except none centrally located in NYC.
NYC, being a major city, can't seem to hold a con together due to sheer cost. Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Boston can get cons, but NYC keeps faltering.

BAAF as an anime con is probably dead, if the sponsors all pulled out. BAAF will probably revert back to a film festival, if sponsors return.

AnimeNext is likey to become the premier NYC area con.

I didn't see it in this thread. Did Starwind edit his post? He does mention losing the sponsors, but I didn't see Mitsubishi.

Losing the major sponsor is generally a fatal blow.

Hey i can't complain that much i had my lil sisters with me two out of three of those day it was crazy but we managed. The time square area itself is VERY expensive so unles the want to call it Big New Jersey Anime Fest they are gonna be stuck with what they have.

It might have been another thread, but I've heard it from other sources as well.

For all intents and purposes, BAAF is dead. The major sponsors have pulled out and there is no date for 2004 anymore. (The DVD some people have was made before BAAF 2003, so the 2004 date on it and still listed in some convention lists is incorrect.) It's possible Central Park Media may pull it from the ashes and resurrect it, but right now that looks extremely unlikely.

As I've said before, BAAF attendees may want to look into other alternatives for 2004. The odds of there being another BAAF are very low...and getting lower and lower as the weeks and months pass by and there's still no indication of a new BAAF staff coming along to take over for those that were let go.

Ranma Saotome
12-27-2003, 11:31 AM

Question XD Where is the NJ Transit station? XD <---- only knows about NYC Metro XD

la_belle

heres the directions directly from the AnimeNext site from nyc to Secaucus

Take NJ Transit bus #124/129 out of the Port Authority (42nd st & 8th ave). The hotel is a 5 minute walk away from the Cove Court stop. The bus driver can usually drop you off closer if you ask. The bus ride is only about 20 minutes.

-or-

Take NJ Transit bus #190 out of the Port Authority (42nd st & 8th ave). The hotel is 1 mile away from the Secaucus Plaza stop. Call the hotel for a pick-up (201-348-6900).

Bus schedules for the #124/129 and #190 can be found at the NJ Transit website. Note: the #124/129 bus does not run on Sundays.

there ya go..i wonder how much the bus ride costs?

Anime Boston is definitely bigger. They had 4000+ attendees in their
first year last year. AnimeNext had 1500+ in 2003, but we're expecting
about 2500+ this year due to the nice summer dates and being close
to NYC.

Well question... How easy is it to get to the con hotel from the Secaucus train station?

And this has gone from BAAF thread to a Anime NEXT thread... ^_^

Eriol

There is a bus and car pick-up and drop-off point at the NJ Transit Secaucus Junction station. Unfortunately, we do not have bus schedules that stop there yet. That station appears near the hotel, since it talks about the Harmon Cove outlets.

Ranma Saotome
01-03-2004, 12:11 PM
Crap. I don't mind taking the bus out there, but the bus coming back to New York is crowded as hell. :/

Maybe the hotel will pickup from the station.

This saddens me deeply that BAAF may not make it back. It was a really awesome con for me. Memorriieeees.

But, such is destiny. A few cons have been kind of faltering. Shoujocon's also in somewhat of a rut, but that's not too surprising concidering how subject-specific that con is. I think that move to Rye was a big risk on their part. ::shrug::

So, Anime NEXT does seem to be the sprouting NY area convention. Hopefully they'll continue to grow and do well in the coming years.

Regardless, I'm praying for BAAF to pull through. ^_^

Nope, it wasn't that. The fact that it was trapped between 2 big cons is what caused the low attendance.

Absolutely not!
The shoujo genre, while smaller, does have a healthy following. Shoujocon 2003's date was not only between two major cons, but it was also the weekend when college orientation takes place.

you can go on friday and saturday to animenext, friday isnt a regents day and you can use sunday for studying

anyways..i posted this somewhere but i forgot where..so im just gonna say it again

the regents day are pretty much the same for the whole state and my old high school currently has it as

16 Wednesday Regents Exams
17 Thursday Regents Exams
21 Monday Regents Exam
22 Tuesday Regents Exam

heheh..earth science..i took that back in the 8th grade..that was like my best subject, though i forgot most of it..i suggest you invest in a regents review book or review here http://www.regentsprep.org/
